I was in the pits for many Trans-Am, Can-Am, and a few Endurance races. I saw all of these cars run. Fantastic ! The 917’s never ceased to amaze me. Fun to see this.
What a beautiful era for auto racing... Of course, filled with many a tragedy. None the less... Such astounding machines, and strong wills of daring drivers. The cars, the men that stood dominate. A beautiful era for motorsport.
This upload made my day! Got my heart racing and gave me goosebumps. I was at Road America for a vintage event. It was an honor to hear these beautiful machines roar as the earth rumbled.
Hell yeah - only thing better would be to be at mighty RA while these bad boys were running for real, to hear a pack fly through the woods in anger....went to one of the early Brian Redman vintage weekends, RA, back in the late 90's (!) and saw many of these beauties, too, and you can still see the same cars today, yesterday, tomorrow... time does wait sometimes, ya know?
I hear ya, but IMSA today is super competitive, great racing, some of these same tracks....no fire-breathing Lola's or crazy Chaparrals , I get it, but in those days it wasn't uncommon for several laps separating 1st and 2nd, or even HOURS at the big ones.
Great video! I appreciate the walk around and you sharing your experiences. Big shoutout to Uncles and the influence they have on you. My favorite uncle threw me the keys to his 450SLC Mercedes Coupe when I was 18 years old and said, “Take it for a spin!” I will always be grateful for how he made me feel that day. Complete trust in me and made me feel like I mattered. I’m looking into to transitioning from my 370Z Nismo 6MT to a C8; Your video was very helpful. Love the way you spec’d your C8. Color combo is on point. First time I’ve been able to see what Carbon Flash looks like up close. Love the sparkle in the black.
John Wyer was a brilliant operator. Many years ago, I obtained and still have a copy of his book, Motor Racing Management originally published in 1956.. Not just a behind the scenes view at Aston Martin, .but a complete description of how to run a successful Motor Racing team. From the justification for taking part, aims and ambitions and achieving the result. All aspects of running a successful operation. Of all management text books I have read in my business career, this is the the least complex and the most informative.
They not just loooked fast, but they were really very, very fast, in other side, they killed many glorious drivers, but as we, petrol heads, know very well, racing, were and still are a dangerous sport, and in those days the safety of these amasing racing cars, doesn´t were the same as the today´s endurance sportcars.
@ 20:37 sec. it says the Wyer team won 7 of 9 races they entered. I believe they only entered 8 races out of ten total that season. The 2 races they did not enter were Targa Florio and Nurburgring which was left to the 908 Porsches to enter of which they won 1 of the 2.
The JW team did enter the Targa and Nurburgring races, but they used the 908/03, as they were better suited to those circuits due to handling better than the 917. Siffert and Redman won the Targa for JW so there's no question they were there.
The late 60s and 70s race cars are the most wicked looking cars of all eras, regardless of racing type. The drag racing cars had the just produced 426 Hemi or Boss 429. The Stock Cars were amazing looking. The Hemi and Boss were originally designed for NASCAR. Indy cars and the LeMans cars were the sexiest ever. The GT40 and Porsche 917 have never been surpassed aesthetically.
a lot of petty comments about the video quality; I'm just grateful to be able to see and hear legends like Denny Hulme again. He and Bruce McLaren both died doing what they loved, driving fast cars.
There's something special about this era and the ones before it that has been lost today. The cars back then and the technology behind them had way more porno appeal than todays cars that are sterile and built by nerds for drivers with 8yr old video gamer like reflexes
No, in my opinion it was the eighties with Rothmans Porsches and Group B rallying and four different types of engines in F1 (4, 6, 8 and 12 cylinders) in that decade.
Thank you so much. Racing was so much better then, now we are stuck with F1 dominated by vettel, Indy which is nascar with commercials ever three minutes, and I can’t say what I think of nascar. Sad, at least the cars are much safer. It is a shame that they seldom carry motorcycle racing here in the states.
American Flat Track is making a big comeback, super cool. MotoAmerica road racing, too. Both on NBCSN, along with IMSA - the best series in the world today, I say. Lots of friendly US drivers and riders. That's a big bonus.
Overall quite enjoyable--especially the Targa footage. Erratic re specs and racing chronology. And, IMO, unforgivable that Rodriquez and Siffert simply vanish from the commentary. Aside from McLaren's accident, no fatalities mentioned. (Siffert killed in F1, but Rodriquez died in a sports car race. I'm principally an F1 fan, but I imagine the 70s were similarly lethal for sports car drivers.)
sidx45 Late 60s also lethal... Ken Miles died in GT40 testing.. just testing! Crushing disintegration and fire were big problems resulting from pursuit of lightness. David Piper lost a leg doing stunt crashes for Steve’s movie. Jim Clark died in an F2 car, minor off course excursion into small trees obliterated the car. In the usa, Donny Scogmo was killed cutting a T-70 in half at the pit wall end at Road America in Wisconsin. I love the looks and sounds of the formula and sports cars of this era... fantastic... but not good for survivability like todays composites tubs...
ZebsFrend considering that I spent 8 years doing suspension and chassis engineering on race cars in the 70s before moving on to more fruitful engineering endeavors, I say you assessment of my comment is pure shit. Curious to me why there is more of the 1960s covered overall than complete coverage of anything in the 1970s...eh, oh well.

Can Am was terrific
Can am was great I had sex with your mom in the pits all the time. But we always did like that 917. I think she came on herself probably 917 Timex.
Great footage. Good to see and hear Bruce Maclaren. And Denny Hulme. Two NZ legends behind the wheel.
I count myself as very fortunate to have seen these cars and drivers in action. Legendary. Thanks for the video and the memories.

Steve McQueen racing in these races....whatta badass.
The press always focused on McQueen and all but ignored Peter Revson, who did 75% of the driving and was many seconds per lap faster.

Daytona with no chicane on the back, January 1970 - this must be the highest speed race footage on TH-cam, surely
Hardly.
Crazy racing with cars doing half their speed
I actually owned a Simca Deluxe. Such a comfortable car. The ride reminded me of a Rolls Royce.
I like how the tape ops get top billing in the credits.
This was really good but there was obviously a problem with interlacing in a lot of the tape transfers. It would be nice if that could be sorted out.
I think you have Sebring footage mixed in with the 1970 Daytona 24 hours. Some footage looks to be 917 racing on an old airstrip
