When I was a kid my friends and I took the adjustment pipe from my dad's weight bench and started using it as a blow gun. We used a Dremel to shape wooden bullets from a stick, that was a fun Sunday afternoon. Much to our surprise it could easily break skin, it was perhaps by God's grace that nobody lost an eye.

Dad was a "plumber" I had every type of Pipe available in the 70's! we made our First muzzle loading mortar with firecrackers, 1/2 copper, steel pachinko balls(big in 70's) with a two man fire team ammo lighter and charge and ball dropper mortar aimer? This was after we discovered Calcium Carbide and water, or hair spray, Or Starting fluid, carb cleaner, and on, and Cambel soup cans? thee or four no ends taped into tube, one on bottom with One end and old fashioned beer can openings(was still in use no pull tabs yet) on closed end for vent, very bottom can one end removed sm touch hole taped to vented can on tube.
Drop a tennis ball down soup can tube to vented stopper, less is more for fuel in firing chamber/can grab mom's Free book of Matches that came with Every Pack IGNITION!
get the fuel air right WOW GONE! over 6 lanes with medium and frontage roads never to see again. we are all still here "Thank You LORD!" just had lunch with one.
Most of our young life's everyone had Something to do With SPACE or aviation. Learned to ride minibikes in Rockwell Downey Parking lots with security kind of chasing us? then cars, stick and on.
I still enjoy DIY adult toys!

I'm 75 and live alone on a ranch in North Texas way out in the country and use a 30-inch blowgun for home defense.
I put my tongue into the hole and use it as a valve to release a rush of air as I hold my breath while pushing out HARD
I am VERY accurate up to about 80 feet.
I should tell you this though. My accuracy is trumped by the fact that my dart tips (as well as my crosbow bolts) are dipped into 12M sodium hydroxide (lye) and left to dry, then dipped in melted bee's wax (to prevent accidentally rubbing NaOH onto the mouthpiece) before use.
An intruder hit ANYWHERE will be ON FIRE for a good 5 hours, more, if water is used on the entry wound!

The blowgun is not my first choice for defense, hornet darts notwithstanding. I have made a few from 6d finishing nails, with wax-coated lye on the first half inch of the dart, and a pony bead around the shaft to keep the wax from rubbing the inside of the barrel. When the penetration hits the bead, it knocks it loose and the wax kind of shatters. I haven't made one in years. Shot a Doberman that was attacking my goats in the butt with one, and as far as I know that dog is still running. That said one of my Exacto knife blade broadhead darts in the face might not kill an intruder, but it would certainly give him an entirely different project to work on besides intruding. I have seen everything from nicotine sulphate cotton balls to snake venom laced toothpaste put on a blowgun dart, but as a rule I don't dope mine. I rely on good old fashioned cutting edges.

Back in the 80"s my buddy and I used to hunt with blowguns, rabbits, squirrel, and even a duck ! We purchased many before we found a "real" one, .38 caliber, it came with 24" rods of spring steal and actual "hippie beads" and hard plastic broadhead tips. You also had to assemble darts, but it was quick and easy to knock out a dozen and they worked FANTASTIC ! Dropped running jacks in their tracks. These are NOT TOYS

I bought several sections of pvc 1/2 inch to experiment with along with a 5 foot copper pipe. Made some homemade darts with nails an duct tape cones described on Backyard bowyers channel. It will punch holes in a steel peanut can. I cut a flip flop up to make mouth piece and dart holder. Works great.

I find the simplest way to teach people the best performance of the blow gun is, is to say tu or two. I'd almost disagree that it is from the diaphragm. Yes, there is an inhale and an exhale, but the "tu" comes from the same place that blowing a duck call or turkey diaphragm call comes from. It is not a large volume of air. It is a condensed version like a pellet gun does.

That is the way I shoot too. Puffed out cheeks like Dizzy Gillespi. If you try to do it all from the diaphragm, you can't keep your head still, so you can't hit the broad side of a barn. Got my first blowgun when I was about six. Had an uncle who made them from river cane and made thistle tufted darts. I never bought one of these commercial ones though. I make mine now out of 3/4-16 aluminum mill tube.

The power isn't just from the diaphragm, it also comes from your cheeks, hence the name blow gun. The harder you can blow the more power you get, especially with heavier darts. I've been using blow guns to hunt with since I was a little kid and when Cold Steel first released their blow gun to the market, it is the only blow gun I use.

First breath in using diaphragm, you'll look like you're pregnant, then block the air by placing your tongue on the palate on top of your mouth.
Then when you release you want at least 100 millibar of pressure so before releasing your tongue you'll go full muscle contraction of your lungs, increasing air pressure.
Then you release making a "Tuh!!" sound, the air pressure will make your cheeks swell

My dad used to start blowgun fights in the house with us kids. No, not darts! Balls of water based clay. It stung a little, but Mom was cool with it because it didn't leave any marks on the walls. Which was good, because for weeks after we'd find little bits of clay in odd corners we missed during the after-action cleanup. We should probably have been wearing safety glasses, but it was the 70's, so no.

I have the tim wells cobra pattern version. I figured out its best to charge up air in your cheeks then use your tongue to stop it like a valve. When you wanna shoot just pull your tounge back and it lets everything go with little movement. Using just your lungs jolts it everytime for me at least. Its also a way to get way more power out of it cause its compressing way more air in your cheeks and lungs. Only downside is it hurts your cheeks after a while.

When I was a kid in the 50s, “peashooters” were very common. Little more than a plastic straw from which you literally shot dried peas….. Great fun.
Naturally, only a quick step to an actual blowgun… Any sort of tubing will do… I used to make darts from wooden matchsticks into which you’d stick a needle using a pair of pliers. A bit of any kind of fluff tied around the other end to fill up the bore.
Later on, a piece of PVC tubing and highly-efficient darts made of steel wire with bore-sealing paper cones that were an exact fit…..

It’s not infinite screw . It does stop at one point and get tight so you’re using it incorrectly.

Those darts are 80gr. At a speed of 200fps you get a WHOPPING... 7ftlbs... For reference you usually get around 30ftlbs out of a 40lb recurve.

Inflate your lungs, pull in your belly as much as you can then release, you will see a much better result, if you engage your abdominal muscles to push your diaphragm up into your lungs.
Think of it like priming your lungs to shoot.

You have to practice to get good. I've killed Raccoons and birds. It takes a while to get it, but once you do, it's the most rewarding feeling to hunt with a blowgun.

True! Blowgun seems easy to shoot and easy to find the target, but then, you relize it's limits in distance as also, how difficult things turn, when you go for the real stuff like hunting! Thanks for encouraging me man, happy hunting and have fun!!@@r1sabotage

Illegal in UK. Damn it !

I don't think it's illegal to blow a paper cone with some hot glue in the inside end through a half-inch PVC tube with a half-inch to one-inch adapter on the end, though making a dart like that with a nail may be a bit too much.

@@yorkleroy5605 In the United Kingdom under the Criminal Justice Act 1988, and in Australia, the blowgun is categorized as an offensive weapon, and as such it is illegal to manufacture, sell or hire or offer for sale or hire, expose or have in one's possession for the purpose of sale or hire, or lend or give to any other person.

You are making this way to difficult! Say Thaa. . . . like you are spitting the word out with your tongue against the roof of your mouth. . .you will double your speed! 1/2 metal emt conduit, pvc fitting for the mouthpiece and wire nuts with 8d nails heated and pushed through the center and then a drop of super glue to secure the head of the nail. I kill Jackrabbits with them all of the time. . .8d nail. . .right through the eye!
BMX spokes will up your game with caulking tube nozzles for the driving cones available on ebay. . .absolutely deadly on rodents!
