cannot Thank You enough Brother being truly stoked with the yellow jacket, once i had found a supplier in the uk that is, shipping rendered it entirely unaffordable for just one.
those small straw targets, i could easily shoot through them in under a month the first summer back to throwing arrows, that's daily between three and six hundred arrows thrown each day by the way.
so yh cheaper is the quest.
i invested in a large english made straw target right at the end of last summer but the cost was ridiculous, immediately obvious we get what we pay for but still i brought it indoors thinking a good soaking would knock weeks off each time it rained here on our rainy island but funny how we sometimes get shown the right direction to go.
outdoors i can only manage ten yards but indoors i can just about get enough range for daily "torba" training/practice so that was i getting started on that nicely.
i ended up getting another idea, seeing strips of foam were cheap to buy at two by one foot and being a chippy i could buy the timber and the ratchet straps plus the foam for less than factory made with non adjustable banding straps, including a good stand for it in timber i made one for the indoor daily and bought a tarp for the straw boss now kept back outside in the garden.
of course the indoor target is waterproof but not the outside! 😂
did i mention how stoked i am with the stinger?
keeping it covered when not in use the straw boss i can see lasting right through the summer with ease, we really do get what we pay for, before i need a new full-time outdoor target.
for that when it comes, maybe there'll be a day or two with the stinger suspended outside (top tip that one, Thank You again Brother) otherwise it's gunna be another four foot square foam strip homemade replacing it, still have three ratchet straps left over from the initial purchase.
there's a pretty solid chance i'll have experimented with cardboard replacing the foam on the indoor two foot square by then so who knows it may yet get even cheaper.
or, saw a great idea just the other week with a target made out of a flexible builders mixing bucket, a hessian sack lid and whatever we reckon for filling her up inside, maybe i'll be making one of them who knows the cost seems uber minimal.
haven't priced the bucket yet but i can expect to pay nothing for the rest of it except maybe a roll of gaffer tape, betcha one of those spare ratchet straps will work to be fair if not i always have tape around the spot somewhere.
the hessian lid? those one ton gravel bags from the same builders merchants selling the cheapest buckets, odds are because they don't last that long in the trade before they start fraying and become unsafe for aggregates on site so they'll probably have a few they're happy to give away, otherwise paying for disposal these days if the merchant says no? well i'm the type to ask at the next cheapest for the bucket if i see a merchant is greedy.
probably end up with enough to fill it too i reckon.
it remains to be seen which has the easiest arrow pull, currently the indoor without accurate testing is about the same as the stinger but i don't know what difference cardboard would make and the builders bucket i saw is about the same too.
as i said i can see the more expensive large straw boss easily lasting through the summer the only real complaint is i've already left a couple field points and inserts in it.
no worries i have spares of course and the target face i have on there is nine black dots applied with a rattle can and paper cutout template, recently invested in a plastic bullseye centred in a cross and cicles so i am letting the centre one wear out for now but otherwise two of the outside ones are ringed with red with a couple of target pins on the closest edge so i can have a go at cutting them out once the straw boss is done and trashable.
almost can't wait to see if they're even recoverable or if the inserts are even still usable once i get them out.
zero worries on that score with either the stinger, the strips or the bucket if i make one of those of course.
the deciding factor will be the cost of the bucket versus timber costs for the top and bottom of course.
price of timber today i can see i making the bucket to be fair.
anyway, great vid Brother and Thank You for the series i got a proper decent, easily portable waterproof target and a top tip for making it last just that little longer Thank You.

Great video. I have an idea for "will it bow" what if you saved a bunch of wood shavings and saw dust from other projects, and mixed a bunch of it with wood glue to see if it will bow? It might be hard but I bet it's doable.
For what these targets cost, the entire target needs to be made out of the target foam. There's absolutely no excuse otherwise on the high dollar models.
If you put the high end foam through the whole target you would never be able to keep the cost down where it currently is.
I have the cheaper one, one thing not mentioned is the legs. The legs in the cheaper one are plastic. If you’re less than perfect or just mess up a shot and hit the legs it either a) cracks/shatters them and you loose stability or b) destroys the arrow or it gets so stuck it breaks pulling it out. Have never owned the more expensive one, but I’ve ruined maybe 3 arrows on the cheaper version and that adds up. Just ans FYI.
The thing I don’t like about small targets is it will cause you to confuse distance when you confront a real dear for a shot

It's easy to confuse distances without a rangefinder too.
As a gift the shooter buck is just so much more manageable to buy. And as a starter target its perfect. The tranformer is not somthing i like its small and for another 100 you can get a much more realistic and longer lasting target. In my opinion get the shooter buck if you are starting and then get a really nice one later
A glue backed piece of carpet, 2 feet wide and 12-14 feet long rolls into a nice animal torso size target. Secure the rolled carpet with spray on adhesive or 550 cord. Spray paint spots or curves rather than bullseyes. On the ground or from a limb, it takes arrows and gives them back easily.

I use old couch cushions......they work great
If you're shooting from a stand, the arrows would probably be easier to pull from the shorter target because of the angle at which they are sticking in it.

Considering that it's the target foam that makes it expensive, I don't think making the legs a little taller would add to the cost.
Paper targets are always cheaper or making a foam target yourself gos a long way .

Same here. The belly gave out. I think I went through 3 cores though, thousands of shots. Worth the money.
I would use smaller number 2 and has to do with plastic legs and how bad a shot I am on a few shots. Also, I would modify stand so I can use it at a tad higher level. Oh and for anyone not liking red eyes, one can change using a permeant marker. I would also have on hand similar color spray paint for end of sessions when red is showing.
to lubricate the arrow, we just snitch the one of those little soap from our hotel room.
If you twist the arrow on the pull out it wont have that much weight
Most smaller targets are supposed to scale real animals. Say 15 yards at the target equals 30 yards in the woods
I have a shooter and would highly recommend not shooting it with broad heads.
