    Composer: Franz Liszt
Franz Liszt is universally celebrated as one of the greatest-ever virtuoso performers on the modern piano. Contemporary accounts describe his seemingly superhuman technical abilities and equally striking charisma and stage presence. Yet Liszt was a formidable composer, and his expansion of pianistic possibilities was achieved as much through innovation in his own great piano works as through his astonishing performance on the instrument, if not more. Like many child virtuosos thrust early into busy concert careers (Liszt’s began at the age of nine) he retired early, weary of the spotlight, turning his back on the stage at the remarkably early age of 35. Since he lived to the likewise remarkable old age of 75, much more than the latter half of his life was devoted solely to composition, and having been a pianist of his calibre, the works he created for his own instrument were indeed groundbreaking.

      How could you possibly know?

    • @amerrylittlemonarch
      @amerrylittlemonarch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

@@stonefireice6058 This has to be one of the most ignorant comments I've ever read. Not only did Liszt's compositional genius completely outshine Chopin's, but he also influenced posterity to a far greater extent. Liszt directly foreshadowed Impressionism and the musical schools of the early 20th century with works such as the Bagatelle sans tonalité, Les Jeux D'Eaux À La Villa D'Este, Nuages gris, Csárdás Macabre, and the Three Apparitions (which were composed in the early 1830s!). Debussy idolized Liszt and openly adopted elements of his style (especially the aforementioned Jeux D'Eaux and Nuages gris). Liszt also influenced his contemporaries, most notably Wagner; in fact, he taught the latter about the art of orchestration. Liszt's harmonic innovations propelled him to the forefront of European Romanticism - Chopin never reached such a level, nor did he influence anyone to the extent Liszt did.
Liszt's symphonic poems had a major impact on the history of music - some of the most important composers of the 19th and 20th centuries modeled their orchestral styles after his, and the great Russian orchestrators (especially Rimsky-Korsakov) took after his compositional techniques.
Not to mention, Liszt's capacity to bring out novel effects from the piano to evoke orchestral instruments (consider S.137, S.139, S.140, S.141, S.126, S.464) eclipsed Chopin's.
"Liszt was first and foremost pianist, great performer and ladies charmer- 19century original of Liberache. He loved to entertain and never failed to play many variations of other composer’s music. The variations were always flowery and extensive. He actually opened all Parisian salons for Chopin, just playing his compositions."
This is perhaps the most misunderstood aspect of Liszt's art: he performed like a charlatan/entertainer for the public, but when he composed for the genuine betterment of music, forgetting the populist pandering, he was a true visionary. The man was way ahead of his own time.
"But he wasn’t a great composer in comparison with, agAin, Chopin. Outside of a few noted pieces, his own music was repetitive, with too much bravura, especially his Hungarian rhapsodies."
No, this is simply wrong. Liszt's melodies are just as beautiful, his harmonies more innovative, his counterpoint bolder, his orchestration more inspired, and his music more substantial. The "few noted pieces" you refer to are PLENTIFUL (almost his entire oeuvre). With a musical output of 700+ works, there are bound to be some that are less inspired. But Chopin wrote some terrible things, as well; for instance, his fugue is terrible (and yet he had the nerve to criticize Beethoven's counterpoint). Liszt's music isn't 'repetitive' at all. In fact, I'd argue that Chopin's is more so. In his waltzes, the variation is minimal and he repeats the same melody over and over again. The bravura in Liszt's opera fantasies only serve to enhance the music. Reminiscences de Don Juan, for example, uses octaves to convey the power of the final damnation scene from the original opera; Reminiscences de Norma's bravura helps enhance Liszt's inimitable skill of thematic transformation/combination.
The Hungarian Rhapsodies were composed to celebrate Liszt's native culture and are packed with interesting, fantastical melodies (his Romanian and Spanish Rhapsodies, as well!). They're anything but repetitive; and some of the greatest jewels of the piano repertoire can be found in them. Have you heard his Lieder? They are some of the most beautiful works a person can hear. Listen to Die Lorelei (you'll hear one of the most notable examples of a pre-Wagner tristan chord, though it doesn't function the same way as the one Wagner himself used).
I also recommend listening to all of the Années de Pèlerinage; true masterpieces are within. Liszt's music can be pensive, triumphant, potent, resplendent, aureate, powerful, subtle, and utterly vibrant at times. I urge you to reconsider your view of Liszt, for he is one of the most crucial figures in music history!
"He was very successful, but new his limits, and that’s why his friendship with Chopin wasn’t without envy. (Mozart and Salieri comes to mind)"
What? This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Liszt had no "limits"! He was, along with Wagner, the most forward-thinking composer of the 19th century, and his grand compositional scope ranged from folk music to sacred vocal works, and everything in between. If anyone in this case was limited, it was Chopin... not Liszt. And that was because he died so young (but, even then, Mozart lived 4 years less and still managed to achieve more!). Liszt didn't envy anyone, especially not Chopin; in fact, I'd say it was the opposite: Chopin dedicated his Op. 10 Études to Liszt, and after the latter performed them, Chopin wrote, "I should like to rob him of the way he plays my studies."
Liszt's music contains some of the most fascinating content one can hear - and I hope you soon realize this (insert Beethoven hearing insult here).
Also, the fact that you compare this to Mozart and Salieri is completely ridiculous. Not only is Amadeus a completely made-up, historically inaccurate Hollywood movie, but it's also completely detrimental to the reputations of both composers. I am really frustrated by the popular attempts by internet users to romanticize the lives of these brilliant men and use a film, of all things, as an analogical tool to compare them. Your attempt to apply this here is also really inappropriate, because it doesn't accurately reflect anything (unless one were to take the converse of your statement). Moreover, neither Liszt nor Chopin envied one another, and though they maintained a rather precarious relationship, Chopin, up until his death, referred to Liszt as 'my dear friend'; Liszt did the same when speaking of Chopin.
Please... take a deeper dive into the works of the great Franz Liszt, for he was one of the most interesting people who ever lived; unfortunately, however, his legacy to this day remains debated. In a sense, he is one of the most misinterpreted and misunderstood of the great composers. There are still a great many who consider him a mere charlatan and entertainer at the piano - a rather parochial view, in my opinion.

@@susana8929 Chopin didn't live long enough, as he died in 1849. Liszt lived until 1886, so his musical repertoire neatly spans from the very beginning of the Romantic era, when influence from the First Viennese School and Beethoven and Schubert were still very strongly present, to the end of it, seen in the advanced unconventional harmony used in some of his late work which almost reminds me of Bartók at times (i.e. the two Csárdás, Nuages Gris, Valse Oubliée, and Bagatelle sans tonalité). Not only that, he also had a strong influence on the French Impressionists which can be heard in the Anées de pèlerinage, especially Volume 3, Les Jeux d'Eaux à la Villa d'Este. Fun fact- he lived long enough to meet Debussy!
Another reason is that Chopin pretty much never composed for the orchestra. His piano concerti are fine, but he never composed any larger-scale works like symphonies or operas. Liszt wrote thirteen symphonic poems and actually invented that whole genre, as well as two other symphonies (the Dante and the Faust; which I associate with the symphonic poems anyway) and various miscellaneous orchestral pieces. He even wrote one and a half operas (I say half because the second, which he began writing as an adult, was never finished), "Don Sanche" and "Sardanapalo".
So, as much as I love Chopin (and Liszt also praised his work throughout his life), I think Liszt deserves that title more. I do wonder how things may have turned out different if Chopin had lived as long as his contemporary, though.

@johnny fox Exactly; I can never understand what lead someone to think in such a demeaning way. "No amount of practice will enable the non-gifted to reach such heights" he says, but I want to hear an example of any musician who made success through his "gift" as opposed to will and technique. I’m pretty sure Liszt didn’t sat on his ass the whole day instead of learning his way to the top just because some “superior being” though that he was worth of such greatness; super powers doesn’t exist, mate.

I knew I would never be up to his demands, so never again attempted any more Liszt. The young sure have a lot to learn. This collection was an eye-opener, amazing and so brilliantly performed.
