    I guess I'm one of the few that really liked the ending. They needed something that shifted the film in a big way otherwise I feel it could have had a letdown finish.

      +WrecklessEating I liked it but it was a drastic shift from the pace of the previous minutes. Both endings had merit but this is the only one we'll see.

      +genki831 I pretty sure the original ending was Michelle escaping the bunker from Howard, who didn't die. She gets in the car and drives down empty roads with no one to be seen. She climbs up a hill and sees Chicago destroyed, she then takes off the vest and gas mask before taking a deep breath.

      So basically, the ending I would have preferred.

      +genki831 exactly! That ending is so much more... devastating yet satisfying. That ending would have put The Cellar up there with Se7en and The Mist for the most emotionally dark and brilliant films ever made, but instead they made it a quick fix, forget it in a week, give the audience what they expected ending.

    I'm one of the people who were following this movie'd ARG, so the ending didn't seem nearly as left field as it did to others. I really enjoyed the Hitchcock levels of suspense in this film. I think most everyone would enjoy this movie.
    Get better soon, and as always thanks for making these videos.

    I think it definitely owes its financial gains and popularity to being tied in to the Cloverfield universe. Without the title or connections it would've possibly passed under the radar, but would've still been a solidly cast dark psychological thriller. I like the ending myself, as I felt the duality of threat helped crank the tension even higher (bad shit going on up above, bad shit going on down below in the bunker), and like Cloverfield the monster/alien threat is secondary to the human emotion and interaction. Saw it last night, and still can't get this movie out of my head. That to me is testament to how tight and scary the movie is. It's rare that a thriller movie can interlace with sci-fi, but they pulled this off well, and I think a small scale, low budget movie like this deserves its box office success. See it for the performances alone- John Goodman has raised the bar for creepy psychopaths everywhere!

    I liked this movie, but would've preferred if they'd cast some more doubt and suspicion on Emmett and drawn that out a bit longer---I only viewed him as sketchy up until the dinner scene. Also, I think the original ending that they'd written would've been better suited, though I realize that then they couldn't have directly linked it to "Cloverfield." ....unless they'd made sure all the props were no later than 2008, and rewrote the setting of the bunker to a NYC suburb where she could see the Manhattan catastrophe from afar after escaping to the surface....i.e.: Southern Westchester County/Northern Staten Island/Eastern Queens/Western Long Island/NorthEastern NJ.

    Next time you do a review of a modern movie spoil the shit out of it. I watch internet reviews of movies currently in theaters because I don't intend on seeing the film, like ever. So spoilers are much appreciated. I might decide to watch it when It's on Netflix or Hulu, but that just means I have a very low opinion of the movie in question. It also means I can't be arsed to pay $20 to see a movie that might be a piece of shit.

  • @genki831
    @genki831 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    *SPOILERS* I think the ending would have been better if she had either been killed by the threat outside or never confronted it at all and just drove off uncertain of whether the air was poison or not. The whole thing about what she heard on the radio and what she did about it made it seem like I the projectionist accidentally loaded up a different movie all of sudden.

    The ending wrapped everything up really well. While I would have probably liked the "Oh he was just nuts" approach....I did enjoy the ending.
    Maybe had they stopped at "Oh you gotta be kidding me" more people would like it?
    IDK i thought this was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

  • @LarryPokeTrainer

    This was a good movie. The acting is spectacular, and the performances of Goodman and Winstead are very nearly enough to carry the film on their own. The script is pretty great and the mystery is very intriguing. The music and sound design were impeccable. I loved how far they pushed the PG-13 rating. Seriously, with a few more minutes of footage added this could be a moderate R. But I'm in the camp that really disliked the ending. I think it derailed what was a really great, small, claustrophobic thriller and turned it into a big budget sci fi action movie. I wouldn't say the movie shit the bed with the ending, but it did pee it a little.

    It's pretty obvious that a lot of people who saw this, went into it expecting a Cloverfield sequel.
    So people coming out from this I expect to have ended up on two sides.
    I personally didn't care for Cloverfield and the title for this didn' help it.

    • @tylerskiss
      @tylerskiss 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ripoutyourprejudice I'm shocked that so many people who expected a Cloverfield sequel are not more upset with being so obviously deceived. I was not a big fan of Cloverfield (it did make for a great Rifftrax though), but I was interested in the screenplay The Cellar and I wanted to see it made into a feature, so to finally have it come out, but have them change the ending- the very thing that made the screenplay so rewarding... it's infuriating. And it's not even like they did it because it was really close to Cloverfield- the two films are completely different! What a waste of a good story.

    • @ripoutyourprejudice

      ripoutyourprejudice did they even film the original ending? I don't know, Cecil mentioned the film stalled and they had to take on the Cloverfield name and association just to complete the film. Most films are shot out of sequence, so they could have filmed the ending early on. I really hope they do...

    What's funny and sad is that the ties to Cloverfield don't actually fit with the original Cloverfield movie. The Cloverfield monster was pretty clearly an animal - everything about the incident says "animal encroaching on human territory". Then this comes along, and there's clearly an organized attack and mop-up, orchestrated by a technologically advanced force, and the beings involved have only the vaguest similarity to the Cloverfield creatures. The two don't fit together. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, given that it's produced by Captain Lens-flare Mystery-box Abrams :(

    Cecil, I had no problem with the ending as I believe it added more depth to the film. I'm sure some people will complain and will say that the producers 'cop out' because they wanted to make more money but if you look into the movie and listen to the subtle hints , you'll can see why the ending works.

    • @weedongding
      @weedongding 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Lamont Smith If they stayed with just making 'The Cellar', the original ending would have fit. However, since they decided to change it to fit the Cloverfield universe, the ending they went with fits perfectly. I would've been deeply disappointed if they didn't do that. I feel these guys who complain about not keeping the original ending, aren't thinking in terms of Cloverfield. Cloverfield was about monsters as well as characters, it's supposed to be a Cloverfield sequel so I want to see monsters too damn it!

  • @8BallScience
    @8BallScience 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I didn't know ot wasn't supposed to be a Cloverfield sequel, but here's the thing....... I didn't see Cloverfield! So no, its success is based on it being a good film, in my opinion at least.

  • @WordUnheard
    @WordUnheard 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    My only problem with this film is the name. Had they not named it 10 Cloverfield Lane, I would have not been expecting it to be linked to the actual movie Cloverfield. Thus, the ending would have taken me completely by surprise. As it was, I went in thinking that they were linked and kept expecting monsters and aliens. So, the ending was, in a way, spoiled for me.
    Aside from that, I loved the movie. John Goodman MADE this movie. The rest of the cast was great and the suspense was off the charts in certain scenes.
    The trailer did a fantastic job at keeping us in the dark from being able to figure out what this movie was about. More trailers should go this route. That said, had it not had Cloverfield in the title, I would have been in the dark from beginning to end. As it was, I was expecting creatures all throughout the film.

    Most of the scripts that I've seen shoved into existing franchises were the later Hellrazer movies, and those were, well, not great. It's hard to say, maybe it would have done well with a good marketing campaign as a standalone, but I get the feeling that it would have taken time to get a real audience. It would have definitely made back its money but to the levels it has? Maybe not. As usual a great review, thanks Cecil.

  • @petitio_principii
    @petitio_principii 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Besides nearly certainly increasing the return on investment, the tweak to shove it into the clovervield-verse also helps it be somewhat less of a remake of an episode of 2012' "metal hurlant chronicles," "shelter me," with Michelle Ryan. Not mentioning that as something against 10CL, it's a well-executed and entertaining movie, even if it's sort of an almost remake. It's almost a "deep impact"and "armageddon" kind of thing, both cool and different enough, although that episode was not as different as those movies were. The writer of the original comic story may be somewhat pissed, though, even with the tweak distancing it more from the original.

    THANK YOU!!!! Seriously, thank you for setting it straight. I feel like I'm wearing my fingertips thin writing in comment sections about how this isn't some super deep, "find the clues" Cloverfield sequel- it's just a film the tacked the name to. The screenplay was floating around Hollywood for years before it finally went into production and it had sweet fa to do with Cloverfield.
    I was excited that the screenplay, The Cellar, was finally made and I have no doubt that the film is good, but I refuse to see it on principle. I'm so sick of JJ Abrams' "secret box" campaigns, because he constantly makes films look like they will be so much more surprising than they ever really are.

    If you read a novel with multiple POVs, you'll often have a chapter near the beginning that seems completely unrelated to the story, but it's introducing this new POV character, giving background & characterization, and adding to the story even if it isn't obvious up front.
    That's what _10 Cloverfield Lane_ was to me. The problem is that now I'm invested in this character, and we need the next chapter(s) that continue her story in the broader plot of the movie series.
    Still, it was surprisingly good. I enjoyed it.

    John Goodman made the entire film. It was Oscar material. Other than that there were a lot of elements that just ruined the experience for me. The girl's character felt inconsistent, with bouts of ingenuity alternating with complete stupidity - I had a lot of difficulty sympathizing with her. The other guy's character was almost superfluous. The forced ending felt forced and I knew right then that the movie was not meant to be a Cloverfield prequel at all. Hating Abrams I automatically assumed it was him pushing for the cross-over. However, you have to agree that it all played like a stretched Outer Limits episode. The resolution at the end wasn't even a twist and it didn't balance the overall length of the film. Be honest, with a mediocre actor playing Goodman's character, would you have liked the movie at all?

  • @callanleigh1482

    without following the ARG very closely, this film has a lot of holes. As much as I loved it because I was immersed in it's back story, I found it very unfortunate that it was a little hard to follow without it. Original Cloverfield was the same way to me. I think the connections, as dubious as they were (tagruato, slusho, ect), were much easier to understand only having followed the ARG.

  • @ryderdrew
    @ryderdrew 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    SPOILER Warning: ok so here's my theory about the ending, I think the movie is either 8 years after cloverfield or the movie takes place during that event. See I'm betting on it takes place in the same world because what if the monster from cloverfield was dropped from the ship that the ground unit was dropped from, I mean think about we clearly know that the ship's aren't all the same size because of the way end when you see bigger ships in the distance. But I know for sure there's more that were missing in the movie like, what really happened to Howard's daughter, is this the same time period as the first cloverfield, what was the point of the attack, just stuff like that still bothers me.

  • @fodxp

    Nobody went into this movie to see an awesome tense suspenseful mystery thriller. They saw it because marketed said it was connected to the first Cloverfield movie. Had this been called "The Cellar," no one would have cared, no one would have seen it, and it would have made maybe a fraction of what it currently grossed. What proof? I wasn't interested in the characters fates and that made this a chore to sit through .
    My hat is off to them for making a film on such a low budget and i'm always glad when small budget horror/sci films do good at the box office but for me nothing resonated on a dramatic or character level , i simply didn't care what happened to any of them , unlike the original where i was actually invested in the characters fates .
    I didn't have a problem with the ending on a narrative level but it was way too derivative of another film from 2005 that i won't mention, it was just on a much smaller scale .
    There are some leaps of logic that made the film silly near the end , it was like a Friday the 13th film , i was shaking my head and giggling .
    It may be a stretch but i feel this film shares some Dna with a terrific little low budget sci fi film called The Signal from 2014, and i felt that movie was way more satisfying than this faux Cloverfield sequel .
    Winstead is so hot though, she was great in The Thing also

    See I heard that the ending as is was written before the director even came on board. From one article, I read: About two or so years ago, Damien Chazelle rewrote the Cellar script, turning it into a Cloverfield movie. He got the chance to direct his passion project, Whiplash (sooooooo good), and left this movie.

    Sometimes being absorbed by a franchise works. The one that sticks out to me the most was what sounded like a pretty descent action/suspense film called "Simon says" had the protagonist turned to John McLain added a little Sam Jackson at his best and bam. You have a die hard sequel that I have heard people call their favorite of the series.

    All i know is that i sit here all smug because I knew (hunch) from the outset that the monster was not the Cloverfield monster. The roaring in the trailer was clearly human, and I got into a shameful number of arguments with fanboys that youtube in mama's basement over what the monster was. Tons of starry-eyed cloverfans were all squee over seeing Clover again, and it was so obvious that Goodman was the one that was being teased as the monster.
    But. Good movie. True story.

    So even though JJ did some Studio in-brawling to get his hands on this one, it actually helped the movie get better name recognition in the long run

    I'd love to see a film where the female lead is a creepy psycho who is trying to chain an old man to a bed and re-live her father/daughter dynamic through force. But that would take some balls to make. I found too many things in this movie to be too convenient for it's own good. Why would this guy design a bunker where he couldn't reach the air reset switch? Makes no sense. Anyway, it reminded me a lot of The Divide from 2011. It could have been a lot better.. if they left it open ended toward the end and taken out the stupid aliens it would have been great, but as it is it's just another shitty zombie movie or something.

      That was a pretty terrible film. With Keanu's hilarious acting being the worst part. I found it more annoying that scary or intense.

    So I know the video is old, but still :D
    When my friends and I went to see this movie, we had no idea what Cloverfield is. I know that’s an outlier situation, but point is we went in blind.
    Never have we been so worried for the main character in a movie. The movie kept us constantly on edge and hoping she will be okay. The Cloverfield addition in the end didn’t feel out of place. It was more of “if the worst can happen, it will”, and it did. The final scene was amazing, and we were absolutely rooting for the character.
    So I can’t see why it would be a bad flick, but I really enjoyed this analysis video!

    After seeing this movie about a week ago I can agree that it was a really well made movie, even with the sudden shift to make it more appealing by slapping the Cloverfield name onto it. The original ending would have lead to a bit more information about John Goodman's character that the final cut didn't have, but it doesn't necessarily change the outcome of the movie. Cloverfield is most likely the reason this movie was so successful, despite it being loosely tied to the first movie; it wouldn't have done as well as The Cellar because sequels will usually sell more. The director seems to really like the idea of this being an origin story for Michele's character with more movies possibly on the way.

      Also Michelle is one of the best female characters I've seen. She is smart and resourceful. She fights back and wins against Howard and the ending thing(spoiler free).

    This movie would have been a 10/10 if it weren't for the ending and I vastly would have preferred the original.
    It's not that I had a problem with aliens showing up, that's fine. I was halfway expecting that monsters actually were killing off people, like maybe not all of the parasites from the Cloverfield monster were exterminated and they were causing a plague or something. What I didn't like was the sudden shift into fast-paced action and explosions. Plus the alien designs were just terrible, they looked like they were ripped straight out of Transformers.
