Finally sat down and watched 10 Cloverfield Lane. I think you could easily recut the movie to remove the action sequence at the end. Just have her get in the car, drive off, decide to go help the people in Houston, and show a brief flash of the weird skyline with possible alien spacecraft as the lightning flashes. Perfectly good, that.

In these same interviews he says stuff like "yeah, I get you didn't like the movie and that's fine" or "audiences didn't want to see my movie and that's fair".

Watching the "Me Him Her" review after the Max Landis allegations really makes it the most awkward of viewing, even by RLM standards. It feels meta, like Jay was on to Max from the start & his criticisms toward the film mirror that. And Mike really wants to give Max a chance and believe that these things aren't true (i.e. him cherry picking good things about the film). It's kind of fascinating & slightly less perverted than Plinkett's relationship with his painting of Black Baby Jesus.

• @MrChomiq
@MrChomiq 8 ปีที่แล้ว +40

+V1NCH3NZZ0 Yeah I liked that too. I mean, people saying that he's dickriding or whatever, simply because he didn't say "it was utter shit, stop making movies" are just full of it. He didn't like it, it showed. Jay also didn't like and still kept his bashing to a minimum. It's just that they know Landis and know that the guy is passionate about making movies. It wasn't a complete failure, guy made a movie, it wasn't some B schlock, but it wasn't great either. Like some are saying that they've backed off their criticism about American Ultra or Victor Frankenstein. Once again, they weren't terrible movies. They had interesting elements, but they weren't great either. It's not like Max Landis is A class Len Kabasinski, but he's no screenwriting genius.
Personally I'm missing the point this movie. Who's the target audience of this movie? Landis said he "knew Mike and Jay wouldn't like this movie". Who's suppose to like it? Which specific type of audience would enjoy it? It's like him going on about American Ultra, when he said "Unsurprised @redlettermedia didn't like American Ultra. They didn't like Chronicle, either. But they liked the Hobbit movies. So...eh?". He makes something that fails to deliver and immediately goes on defensive. He made "Me Him Her" in 2013, for three years it was sitting on a shelf. Then finally it gets released... straight to video. It's not like it's some sort a masterpiece.

• @WickedWicka
@WickedWicka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +28

+MrChomiq Funny enough, their criticisms against "Me Him Her" were similar to "American Ultra" in that it tried to mix several elements/ideas that simply don't work well together, in other words, can't have your cake and eat it too. It seems Landis is chasing different genres/tropes and repeating the same mistakes, but thinks he's clever/quirky because no one has ever done it before--except obviously it has been done.

• @NormalLee67
@NormalLee67 8 ปีที่แล้ว +66

+V1NCH3NZZ0 What bugged me the most (and I'm sure others) was how he softened blows he had previously delivered to Landis by saying he liked Victor Frankenstein and American Ultra, even though if you go back and watch those reviews he is much harsher on both of those movies than you would think if you had only watched this video.

You're so obviously trying to soften Jay's blows while reaching for SOMETHING positive about it that you can exaggerate. It's uncomfortable watching someone who's usually so blunt and upfront about his thoughts suddenly hold back, in order to not hurt someone's feelings.

There was an episode of the Metal Hurlant TV series (Heavy Metal magazine might be more familiar to others) that covered much of the same premise as 10 Cloverfield Lane. It involves a girl that wakes up in a bunker with a guy she recognizes as her neighbor... through the course of the episode they get closer and she starts to believe him... until she finds out he was kind of creeping on her and taking pictures and stuff previously... so then she escapes the bunker to find there really was a nuclear holocaust. I think that version of the story works a bit better because what you end up with is the reality of outside being devastation from nuclear war and basically death if you go out there VS stay in the bunker with legit creepy dude who kinda saved you but also wants to manipulate you at the same time. The TV series was Twilight-Zone-esque and a lot of hit or miss... but this episode entitled "Shelter Me" is worth a look if for no other reason to compare to 10 Cloverfield Lane.

what do you dislike about Chronicle? it was my favorite film of the year it came out. It seemed very unique and to do the found footage movie thing the right way.

• @skryreprototype1826
@skryreprototype1826 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

+unassumption To be perfectly fair, I didn't think the film was all bad. Just a significantly toned down version of Akira. Its cinematography (like most found footage films) made me feel a little nauseous, but I think Josh Trank did an alright job with the script he was given, but the script itself wasn't all that great.
Honestly, like you, I wouldn't be surprised if Max Landis had a helping hand in writing Chronicle, because everything he's churned out since then has been disgraceful.
