@@rowanlyons5863 surface rust builds up on ships between overhauls. Especially on ships exposed to high seas. It is removed and repainted during a overhaul. Ships usually get overhauled every few years. Navy ships tend to show more because they usually experience worse conditions than civilian vessels. The classic example being search & rescue. Civilian vessels try avoid the storm, navel vessels often send up powering through to save people.
