    ** READ MY INTERVIEW WITH RED WING JAPAN: stridewise.com... **
    The Minnesota-based Red Wing Boot Company is one of the most popular and influential American boot brands out there. From 1905 to today, they make those classic work boots your dad and granddad wore, and much, much more.
    Today we’re looking at the Blacksmith, an important edition to the Red Wing pantheon. Does it stack up?
    FIRST GLANCE
    The Red Wing 3340 Blacksmith features a unique briar oil slick leather, which looks like a traditional brown in some lights, but delightfully red in others.
    At first glance, this boot looks an awful lot like the Wolverine 1000 Mile boot, which isn’t really a surprise as these two companies are pretty clearly competitors.
    ** SEE MY RED WING VS WOLVERINE COMPARISON: • FIGHT! Red Wing Vs. Wo... **
    The Blacksmith features a Vibram mini-lug sole, which combines a classic Commando sole and a flat sole. I like that it’s got a good grip but from the side looks nice and slim.
    The sole is attached with a 270-degree Goodyear welt. Other features include dull guilt hooks and eyelets, an unlined inside, and triple stitching along the vamp.
    Red Wing calls this really round toe a bump toe; it’s a little on the bulbous side but it does give you some wiggle room. Whether you like it or not really depends on your aesthetics.
    ** WATCH MY RED WING IRON RANGER REVIEW: • Red Wing Iron Rangers ... **
    LEATHER
    This boot features a Briar Oil Slick leather, which is produced at Red Wing’s tannery, SB Foot Tanning Co.
    Like I mentioned, the leather has a red tint - I love wearing these uniquely colored boots when the outfit is right, though they’re not dressy.
    The tanning process on this boot is interesting. It’s oil tanned (in white mineral oil, to be specific) but it’s also chrome tanned to finish. While it doesn’t necessarily have the lustre of some combination tanned leathers, it’s very hardy and won’t require a ton of conditioning.
    LEATHER CARE
    So while mink oil is really popular for making boots extremely waterproof, the downside is that it can definitely alter the color of your leather. I use neatsfoot oil instead, which doesn’t penetrate the leather as deeply and preserves color better. Just brush the boot down with a horsehair brush and apply the oil to condition.
    ** SEE MY GUIDE TO RED WING BOOT CARE: • Boot Oil vs Mink Oil -... **
    SOLE
    The Vibram 430 mini-lug sole is a medium traction, oil resistant, non-marking, and long-wearing rubber sole. It’s pretty slim for a commando sole, and pretty flexible, too. One downside is that they don’t have great shock absorption, since there’s no foam or urethane or anything like that in the sole.
    The midsole is cork, and the insole is leather. The steel shank provides some decent arch support and stability, which I like.
    Finally, there’s the 270-degree Goodyear welt. It’s slightly less waterproof and slimmer-looking than a full 360-degree welt.
    FIT & SIZING
    The Blacksmith is available in full and half sizes from 7 to 13 on Red Wing’s site and on Amazon. They only come in one width, though.
    Surprisingly, these boots took no time to break in (unlike other Red Wings I’ve owned).
    Decent arch support, and a snug but not too snug fit along the side of the foot - plus they’re nice and roomy in the toe box. Shock absorption isn’t amazing, but it’s fine.
    ** SEE MY FIRST PAIR OF BOOTS, MY 3-YEAR-OLD RED WING MOC TOES: • Review: Red Wing Moc T... **
    PRICE
    Generally between $280 and $300, though if you’re patient you can usually find them on sale.
    Pros
    * Awesome leather
    * Minimal leather care
    * Good grip
    * Decent arch support
    * Resoleable
    * Easy break in
    Cons
    * One width
    * A bit pricey for the average joe
    * Informal, wide toe
    * Leather not super lustrous
    * Mediocre shock absorption
    * Unlined

    I love that we’re getting away from the narrow dress boot look (still love all of mine but..). The work boot / hiking boot look with formal attire is such a good look and has made formal at work and our long commutes in much more comfortable. I like being able to present in the boardroom, hike 15 flights of stairs to the next meeting and navigate the tough terrains of the inner city in my way to the train tracks for my ride home; all within weather that goes from 70s and sunny to 40s and snow within hours.

    I have had these for a few months and highly recommend. I used saphir neutral oiled leather cream which is neatsfoot oil based and I think it looks good. I actually still get a pretty decent amount of luster with a good brushing and have only treated them with the saphir once and a small touch up. The leather seems to "heal" the light nicks and scratches from everyday wear after a firm brushing and relaxing overnight. The leather resembles that of a good football (american) in color and feel, and there is a nice pebbling on the upper and hind sections, smoother tighter grain leather on the toe which I feel is a nice subtle detail. For me there was not that bad of a break in, mostly felt rough around the collars. I did not size down, got the same as my sneaker/dress shoe size but I prefer to wear with merino wool socks and don't mind the extra roomy toe box. Even for the summer I try to find some thicker cotton socks if I choose to wear this style of boot, it really helps with the fit and comfort.

    I love my Blacksmith 3345s! The Prairie Leather is awesome! I'm currently comparing them to the Chippewa Service Boot and the Blacksmith is blowing it out of the water... I also found the break in with these much better than the IRs. I used to have a pair of 1000 Mile and they simply do not match the quality of the Blacksmiths in my opinion. Great video as always Nick!

    3340s were my first pair of boots about eight years ago and they are still going strong. They are definitely not dress boots and the bulbous toes are important to note, but if you are looking for a heritage boot with a burlier and more casual workwear look then I think these are a great choice.

    Just got the Beckmans from Sierra Trading Post, $200 for factory seconds in the cigar featherstone color. I'd definitely prefer the blacksmiths but they dont have it as factory seconds and I can't see myself paying that much (paid $400 for my shell cordovans, and that was kinda a lot for me). It just sucks that maybe I would've skipped the Beckmans and just got the Blacksmiths if they made it in a size 6 ugh

    I have a pair of handmade hiking boots made by a company called Prospector (I believe no longer in business). They are almost 30 years old. Anyway, I have used mink oil on them and have cleaned them with saddle soap once per year since I bought them. I have never had a problem and they look fantastic. I will be replacing the commando sole for only the second time (the first sole I had on their was the best sole I ever had on a shoe/boot of any kind and lasted almost 20 years lol). I think one problem is people apply too much mink oil. I use a conservative amount but really work it into the leather. The process takes me a while and your hands get sore but I believe it is worth it. I only have three pair of boots, these a timberland and a cheaper wolverine. My Timberlands are the newest and they are 11years old. They were nubuck but I couldn't stand them so I saddlesoap cleaned them then mink oiled them up about ten years ago and now they look like oil tanned leather. Look great in my opinion. Anyway, I think mink oil is the best product to use most leather boots of a casual or working nature. I would definitely avoid using it on dress type boots or anything that is chromed leather.

    Thanks for the review, appreciated. Just a pointer on Chrome tanned leather versus Veg. In the crust state there's not a great deal of difference at all in the gloss level and if anything veg leather can have a little more shine on it.
    At the end of the day it's how it's finished that dictates the gloss level. A lot of chrome tanned leathers are finished using pigments, resins and lacquers which in general increase the gloss level.
    Both retannages when finished with oils or hot waxes with have a fairly matt natural look, especially if you're working on a buffed grain.

    The last similar pair I had were Sears, I think in the late 1980s. They had two hooks and I believe were shorter at the ankle. They also had cork/rubber type soles, for lack of a better description. My father who was born in 1912 called what I purchased "plow shoes." The boots in this video review look good but are above my budget. I wonder how farmers and blacksmiths could have afforded them in olden days, even with the price adjusted for the time.

    I think the break in process also depends what socks you wear. Never wear cotton socks because your foot will get wet then blister. Wear wool blend socks and it will keep your feet dry with some extra cushion.

    • @BeerNye

      Bingo. Wearing a newer pair of Beckmans now with wool socks- the break-in has been far less painful than what folks have said.

    If my 9013s don't last the rest of my life, I'll probably pick up a pair and replace the speed-hooks with eyelets for a similar look and feel. Wolverine looks nice from a distance, but Redwing is better built from better materials, and more leather.

    I actually bought a pair of the 3343s and a pair of the 3340s. I use the 3343s for work and the Briars for going out on the weekends. Love this boot. Shock absorption wasn't great so I bought them true to size and added a leather insert coupled with a cork insert. I broke them in first without any inserts. But they got a bit loose. Nothing crazy but I like a snug boot. And that toe box is extra roomy for sure. Once broken in to my foot print though, I put the leather and cork inserts in. They fit like a glove now and the shock absorption is way better too. Before the inserts the soles (although really durable and sleek looking) weren't really great for walking on gravel all day. Now they still aren't a lug sole but they are a lot better. Plus the weight factor really helps when walking around all day too. Love lug and crape soles. But man they can get heavy after a 12hr shift outdoors all day. The uppers are handling the beat down I put on em extremely well though. Plus they clean up and look great. Love these boots.

    so im considering ordering my first pair of "nice" boots and am obsessed with red wings (lil bit about me im a landscape and outdoor brand photographer) so I'm outside in rugged conditions a lot and im struggling with which boots to buy for my first pair, i know ill probably get multiple styles once i get into it but the blacksmiths have my heart style wise, it is the style i wear, albeit in much cheaper but im thinking for what i do the moc toes might be better if im standing a lot and moving about the wilderness quite a bit, so my question is, trust my gut and get the moc toes even though they are my second fave ( i also ride a motorcycle and feel they would probably look dope with one) or get the blacksmiths first so i can wear in the city more. the struggle is real

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is tough. Boots are big financial decisions! I'm an overthinker myself (hence the very long videos). I think go with the Blacksmiths, they will look perfectly fine and be perfectly functional for your uses until you get the moc toes.

    I don’t understand why you think a 270 degree welt “might be a tiny bit less water resistant” than a 360 degree one. I can’t imagine why that would be so. It might be true that a storm welt is more water resistant than an ordinary welt, and storm welts tend to be fitted 360 for aesthetic reasons, but otherwise with a standard welt I can’t see why there would be less water resistance. Have you explained this in a previous video or article that I can see?
