2021 Lexus IS 350 F-Sport AWD Review: Sweet V6 Power & Noises but RWD is Lighter & Packaged Better

  • Lexus has "redesigned" the IS 350 for 2021, and even though it's a very heavy refresh of the IS that came out in 2014, the 2021 IS350 is still a great little sports sedan to drive. Offered with three engines, two transmissions, and two choices for drive wheels, Jake tested the 2021 IS350 F-Sport with available all-wheel drive. He'd pick rear-wheel drive, though, to save weight and add the Torsen LSD. Learn more about his thoughts and why he'd pick RWD! Which would you choose?

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Honestly hard to say without driving one... RWD with an open diff is not ideal (to me) so I'd push hard to find one with the limited slip. Adaptive suspension is nice but if you don't like the fixed-rate stuff, that is at least easier to replace through the aftermarket than the differential.

    Toyota's TNGA is supposed to be compatible with front, all and rear wheel drive, but would an IS based on that platform retain the double wishbone front suspension? Since everything using that platform has Macpherson struts up front I highly doubt it, and thats why newer isnt always better. I'm totally ok with Toyota/Lexus simply tweaking and improving the current IS (and formerly GS..RIP😞) platform, but this thing is due a major overhaul of the interior...a '23 IS looks much the same as a 2014 except for the larger infotainment screen which is now a touchscreen, and that doesnt cut it with the prices they want for all versions of the IS. Having said that, the interior still looks good, build quality is solid and most of the materials high quality...but needs about a half inch more shoulder room for driver and passenger.

    You are right on when you say it feels tight in there,it may be because of the way the seats hold you in ,also the center console is not utilitarian,there isn’t even a place to put a pair of sunglasses and the only change inside was straying away from the nice symmetry of vents they had to just taking a couple of round ones and sticking them in there because it was an easy swap out just for the sake of change btw the trunk looks odd as if something is sitting on top of it maybe because of the single back light bar,it’s a shame because they have something here if they could keep the price down.That hump the AWD has on the floor just says eff u to the consumer ie: we don’t give a shit

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rear light bar is awesome at night, really nice touch. We tend to not comment much on styling as everyone sees things differently and has different taste. The AWD floor hump was disappointing, but we'd buy the RWD model anyway so not a huge deal personally. Agreed on center console.

    • @jbm0866
      @jbm0866 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree on the general lack of storage in the interior, but not the rest. I think the round vents on the outer edges of the dash still have symmetry because of the round analog clock in the center. As for the trunk shape, I think it looks unique..and is a natural continuation of the body creases, but I will say it looks better with a low profile carbon fiber spoiler fitted to it. I sort of agree on the taillights, (didnt like it when I first saw pics) but once I saw them in person I think it looks really good. The front of the F-sport trim is simply stunning to behold and may be my favorite front of any current new car...the VW Arteon R-line is a close second, Mazda's current design language for the Mazda 3 turbo (my current daily driver) is in 3rd place.
      Edit- the hump is neccesary to accomodate the transfer case for the AWD, it doesnt exist in RWD models. The reason why it's in front of the gas pedal is because the IS was originally for the Japanese market (Altezza) which is right hand drive so the hump is in the passenger wheel well. It would be far too expensive to re-engineer everything to accomodate left hand driving countries. Along those same lines, cars built in Europe (outside the UK) and U.S. are designed for left hand drive and that sometimes results in some of the most used center stack buttons and knobs being too far away when converted to right hand drive. And I've also seen manual handbrakes on the left side of the center console which in some cases requires right hand drivers to reach over cups in the cupholders to engage it😂
