    I can't think of the name but our inspection guys at work use two types of aerosol sprays. One is translucent and the other is a very light pinkish color. It's to see any form of a crack or bad spot in the metal. I've seen other sprays like that to check heads before as well.

    • @LittleMikeStarCraft
      @LittleMikeStarCraft 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen people use white spray grease too; the white kind of pools up and makes white lightning bolt looking things in the cracks.

    I have watched all your videos on this topic, because, as you might have guessed, this is also my problem. DUH! My 95 AW4 tranny XJ makes this inconsistent, noise similar to yours, And after checking for loose Flex plate to torque converter bolts I did find some interesting things going on under there. While all the bolts were tight, the holes in the flex plate where the bolts pass through, were not exactly round or the size that I thought they should be. Meaning this plate that had was original to the XJ and trans (218K+ miles) probably should have been replaces when we put another good used engine in. Yeah, live and learn. I did remove the bolts and found 4 very closely matched grade 8 washers and put them in behind the bolts and re torqued them down. The noise changed, but it was still there. sometimes when its cold the noise isn't there some times its is and then as everything warms up, its always there. So frustrating! But after watching your video on replacing your number 6 piston and rings, I'm not sure anymore. What sucks is that the noise comes from the same general area. I'm still thinking that its the flex plate.
    So now I want to see the video of trans removal. I assume you will remove the trans and not the entire engine. Not sure what's worse. LOL Good luck with this issue. Love your stuff as its been helpful to me and my XJ exploits.
    Thank you!

    • @NickInTimeFilms

      Your issue sounds just like my issue, and this isn't piston slap so I think that leaves us with the flex plate

      Your one of the only guys I've seen who said it's depends in engine temp. My 98 xj cold start sounds great . A few minutes later after warming up a steady light knock starts and stays. Ive tightened the flexplate bolts and checked for cracks no luck. I even broke down and bought a cheap stethoscope and the knock can be heard at the bottom of the oil pan and the bottom of the bell housing. Further back on the transmission it can't be heard and closer to the front of the engine it can't be heard. It's most clear at the transmission but loudest on the oil pan 🤦‍♂️ I've been stumped on this for months lucky it hasn't got any worse . The damnest thing is it only knocks after it warms up

    How can you possibly have oil pan leaks so soon? Your engine was rebuilt a few years ago. I bet with all of the dirt and sandy stuff in there it wore out something in there. I would also recommend you put POR-15 all under you underside of your jeep to stop the rust and protect it from rusting your investment away,

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure my engine guy put a hole in the pan beating it up, never got around to filling it. Also looks like a P/S leak and maybe a little bit of coolant. This thing is a mess, really burning me out.

    • @johnpadilla480
      @johnpadilla480 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NickInTimeFilms Fix the leaks. I almost cried when i saw that LOL!. POR-15 the whole bottom including your axles, suspension. POR15 = Paint Over Rust. it dries super hard and stops the rust. I had no rust but my undercoat was eaten away because the previous owner got a power steering leak and ate the stock under coat away. i removed all of the undercoat down to bare metal, I did mine and after that I put POR -15 Rubberized undercoat on top of that 3 coats (8 cans = 180 bucks for that). it is really strong. It will also protect from the chemicals and salts that they put on roads in winter. You also need armor down there she look so naked.

    Why would your flex plate have anything to do with timing? I'm just curious about this..

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So behind the flex plate is the timing marks that the CPS reads to time the engine. The cylinder TDC marks are off so it isn't firing when it should and runs like crap

  • @dracosdiabolis1769
    @dracosdiabolis1769 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    maybe your flex plate is warped a little and that's causing the tink sound. so the cheap fix would be to replace it. as for a be all fix all. lol replace the trans with a 4L60. cause if that's a r34 trans. there hit or miss. eather really good or really bad. I think it was a r34.... anywho I hear what your saying. but there's nothing like Cruzin the hwy at 75 more or less mph at 2k - 2500 on the tack. lol

      @Nothingtoya 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He has the AW-4 transmission. They're actually a pretty good transmission with the majority of them still going with well over 200,000 miles on them. That's something that's rare to see out of a 4l60e.

      NickInTimeFilms I’m glad I could help you with these it took me 3 months and wayyy too many orders and flex plates to find the correct one for our renix Ecu, here they are I ordered the omix ADA flex plate for 87-90 Cherokee from jegs speed parts mostly because they where able to overnighted it to me , P/N 440-16913.11 on jegs website here is the link to it if it works here:
      www.jegs.com/i/Omix-ADA/440/16913.11/10002/-1
      Also in my months of calling and searching a buddy of mine who also has a 4.0 XJ and works at my local Jeep dealer informed me that almost all renix Jeep parts are discontinued from Chrysler’s parts catalog, and that whatever stock of renix parts Chrysler owned was all sold off to Omix ADA for further resale and reproduction therefore the only new “OEM” parts we can buy are Omix Ada reproductions which technically are now “oem” parts
      On another side note if you want to buy the flex plate directly from the “Chrysler stock pile” here is the website that sells all of of our OEM parts aswell:
      www.vintagejeepparts.com]
      And here is the part number and link to the flex plate directly from them (which I may note is most likely the same one you buy from jegs, just jegs buys if from them and ships it to you kinda like a middle man)
      P/N 33002675 (note use that original P/N with discretion as that part number on other parts sites will reference the wrong flex plate I.e the pioneer and atk flex plate which is not a correct replacement for us)
      Here is the link directly :)

      This is a hard problem to test for. I thought about the last bolt being an issue so I went to check it again but then I couldn't get it to make the noise at all so idk. Maybe your starter plunger isn't retracting far enough? I had to shim my starter once when my flexplate was going bad cause is would wobble enough for it to hit the starter, but I had no idea it was the flexplate until it kept doing noise no matter what. A bad flexplate can have starting issues as one of the symptoms cause the teeth have a had time catching the starter gears, anyways here's a video on a pretty good tip on changing a flexplate. I haven't tried this method, but it seems helpful.

      I just got my hands on a 98 XJ with same transmission. It has starting issues. At first I thought it was the battery going out but everything else sounds fine engages work good same with my light bar bright as heck. Then I read this reply you posted and went out and started the engine again. Turns out that knocking noise I thought maybe was piston slap turned out to be the flexplate. Pretty sure it's the flexplate. I put my hand on the bell housing cover on the transmission and I can feel something hitting on it

    Put it in my driveway. I would've had it out by now. How's that saying? If you don't like what you're doing, you might as well do it quickly.

      NickInTimeFilms agreed, 4 of my 5 Jeep’s in the past have been 5 speeds and I have my first auto now and I’ll tell you what. The Jeep life really is much easier with an auto especially for wheeling. The 5 Speed is fun but for this just stick with the auto if it’s there and not smoked IMO
