I just wanted to say thank you, I'm in the middle of changing out my head gasket and I wouldn't have been able to do it without this video. I came to this channel pretty late with Tommy already being gone by the time I subscribed, but I just want to let you know every time I grab a wrench I've said, "SOCKEEETS....CHECK"

Wow. I had no clue a HG was THIS simple on an XJ.... so glad I got one! No where near as complicated as a full engine rebuild. Don't have to mess with timing or anything!!!

About to finally take care of my slightly blown head gasket (came with it!) on my 04 Wrangler I bought and drive in Japan. Arigato gozaimashita for this video! Great visual and summary to help me understand that I do indeed need to drive it to another base with a hobby shop... not all military bases have hobby shops, which is BS! But now I'm glad I didn't start in the parking lot... also laughed my ass off watching this, so much appreciated!

Thanks for the video guys! Aside from a library loaned Chiltons (I'm as cheap as you, lol) to get all the torque specs your video and a bunch of tools were all I used to get an XJ with a badly blown head gasket back on the road. Now to replace those warn out CVs up front. For reference, the quote from a local shop was $1300 for parts and labor and I did it for $200. Would have been a bit less but we broke a temp sensor getting the wires disconnected and took the opportunity to replace a very warn bearing on the idler pulley. No Tommy, I'm not sending you the savings to blow on PBR.

I love the fact that you boiz are the Pabst Blues Brother of automobile engine service and repair! Back in the day, we would also be slugging down Pabst Blue Ribbon Lbr's whilst repairing our '68 Mustange Fastback or the '68 Mercury Comet 289 4BBL engines...oh yeah babbeee...anyway now I am not saying I can't still slam a few PBR pounders, and fix an engine or two, but my tastes have become a bit more refined....okay give me a bottle O' Jack, some PBR's, and a wrench, and I can still do damage control on most any BEAST out there probably though them years 91' and older..ha...Johnne in Seattle!

Stuck at home because of COVID-19. Been meaning to do this for a while but haven’t ever gotten around to it. I guess now that I have nothing else to do, this will be the best time to change out my leaking head gasket. I don’t think I could do it without watching this video. My head bolts are the 12-point bolts, though, and I’m afraid I might strip them because they are torqued down so tight. The ones in the vid are 6 point.

2 things i would do differently 1) instead of Teflon tape id use a thread sealant. Liquid or jell like. The tape can give the wrong torque on bolt what may seam to be right but the bolt has too much resistance. 2) sparkplugs, they are NGK in video. They work. But wrong temp rating. And these 4.0s just run champion or autolite better. I wouldn't put anything else in. Besides that great job! Loved it. Very good at focusing on key points of the process that most people question there first time doing a head gasket.

Great video but you really shouldn't use any type of sanding block or Emory cloth on the engine block. They used a very fine grit sandpaper and were careful, but they didn't stress enough the importance of keeping the block free from scoring.
Just lightly use a razor blade to clear off all debris, blow out any holes with compressed air, and make sure you have a good flat surface for the new head gasket. Surface doesn't have to look brand new. Otherwise, this video is spot on.
