Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Saturday! Today I'm renovating my rental kitchen from top to bottom. We painted the cabinets, changed the hardware, added new backsplash, created DIY floating shelves and the transformation is EPIC. My dad helps me transform this entire space from start to finish and I can't wait until you see what we were able to accomplish!!

Your dad using all those terms of endearment for you literally melted my heart. Love how smiley he was the entire time! You could feel that it wasn't a chore for him but an opportunity to spend time with his family. Your mom is such a sweetheart too and I love how you never fail to compliment her ❤️ what a sweet family.
(Also let me just say that I'm a huge fan of the bird light, no matter the room you use it in - but it looks incredible in this kitchen!)

I did not grow up with a dad like yours, and he is now passed, but watching this makes me so happy because I gave my daughter a dad like yours and I’m so happy that for sure her future holds many dad/daughter projects. It’s a wonderful relationship!
The reveal is amazing but what is even more special and so heart warming is your relationship with your dad! He is so supportive and so affectionate! And so crafty and talented! You are a perfect TH-cam duo and such a positive example!
Re: bird light - "Noah and I love it, that's all that matters" YES. It doesn't have to be my style, it's your home. Also I think it works better in your kitchen than in the living room, so A+ solution.
@Laura Brown I use these very shades and my mother-in-law's bedroom she liked black and white that's always been her colors and so I hung black curtains or drapes and then hung those white shades and tied them up a little bit just like she's done anyway my mother-in-law's bedroom came out beautiful and she was so surprised she had been on a trip and she did not know I was doing anything and I did another bedroom too her guest bedroom and it was the real light blues and greens and she had enough in the Attic that was perfect she had a painting one of her church members had given her that she put up there just because she changed some colors but all those things were like 20 years old so I didn't get rid of anything I just moved to move them into garbage bags and put them up in the attic and brought down the picture in the very very heavy cedar chest oh my gosh I did it by myself I wouldn't do that again for anything but I was much younger and you think you're invincible when you're young! Anyway my point was yes those look good and give it a farmhouse feel I think

Your dad loves the camera as much as you do...now we know where all your genius and warmth comes from. The kitchen is AMAZING ... I watch all your videos and I'm not into commenting but this one with your parents not only turnout great but it was very special.
This is absolutely one of the best makeovers you've done! The changes were ultimately manageable (no new cabinets, no rearranging of the layout, no changing of plumbing or wiring) but so beautiful!

Yes to a lamp in the kitchen. We put a floor lamp in our kitchen a few years ago and it makes the kitchen look so cozy, especially at night. We love it.

This video is all my favourite things about youtube design channels - upcycling existing pieces, amazing thrifted finds, re-use of existing pieces to give them and a space both new life (ily bird light) and a strong balance of taking on diy challenges while still delegating more intricate tasks to professionals. YAY
I just LOVE that door! What a find! I also like the tiles! The shelves look really pretty and I like that they’re not in your face (when at the sink) like the cabinets were. But I don’t like the idea of my clean dishes being open to the dust. 😬

Admittedly, “farm house” “boho” or “eclectic” are words that are never used to describe my design preferences…. But I really like your more timeless, yet somehow modern, take on it! Your decisions were very smartly thought out! Let’s say your style changes in the next few years, a few minor and inexpensive tweaks could change the look completely! Bravo!! 👏👏👏

I'll agree that it didn't quite fit some of the spaces you've done before, but that's just a matter of personal taste, which doesn't take away from the beauty of the light.

Agreed, the bird light is gorgeous! My only concern is that she not fry food in the kitchen often as it will be difficult to get oily film off the birds.

I love the bird light!! I have sensitive eyes, so I can’t tolerate exposed bulbs, but no one should hate on that beautiful, whimsical light.

I think it’s one of my favourite makeovers!! Your sis’s neutral bedroom remains my fave dream room, but damn I love your ideas and appreciate the tips. I think the bird cage light looks perfect in there!! And i have had to use unconventional lighting in kitchen rentals in the past (especially galley ones with no windows and blocked off from any natural light sources and basement apartment kitchens! I think it totally gives a warm touch to these spaces and has a vintage feel!) I think the relationship you have with your dad is so sweet and positive and encouraging. Sadly my family was all violence and trauma do this video really touched my heart and made me tear up. Never take that love and support for granted love 🥺🤗🙏🏽🥰♥️ it’s truly a privilege 🙏🏽

Overall. Love the kitchen. It's really lovely. I could never have a kitchen like that. I really cook a lot and would go crazy keeping all the pretty things in there clean from the everyday stuff that naturally gets in the atmosphere from cooking. That being said, it turned out beautiful and your family is great.
I was literally thinking the same thing. My partner and I do Indian cooking most of the time and I was like "I would end up patterning that lovely corner seating and that rug in "sambar splatter" very soon". Haha.

@@lindsey5196 lol lol. Turmeric does make our knees go weak. Lol. For me it's mostly the curries spattering all along the walls and the daily wipe down I need to do. Not to mention garlic and chillies coming off my hands onto anything I touch.
@@swet0909 literally same. I’m also Indian and it’s just the two of us for now but we cook a fair bit so the open shelving and all that white while pretty is laughable in an Indian household.
It’s not just Indian cooking. I live in California and love to cook Mexican. There is no way to have open shelving with a tiny little under-microwave vent and make carnitas or mole regularly. This is a show horse kitchen and I need a workhorse kitchen

The open shelves create more space in the kitchen and make it look lighter. However open shelving might not work fo many, too easy to get dusty. The bench looks way better. Love the bird's cage light. Nicely done.

Just Lovely Alexandra, I realised looking about my home and that of some of my friends (all old ladies/arty homemakers) that your aesthetic reaches towards that of the deep womanly homemaking where objects from the past, precious memorabilia, even humble things mixed with one's kids stuff on the fridge, and dried everlasting daisies from a picnic, and old photos, collected or self made paintings decorate the spaces. Your special skill is to make this aesthetic fresh and contemporary, and of course mostly you use new objects but still attempting the patina of a home long inhabited by several generations. It's all gorgeous and I am thrilled to watch your work here is Regional Australia, and am madly sending links to my grandchildren!

I love your floating shelves! A couple of questions: what thickness and width did you go with when choosing these pieces of wood? What kind of wood are they? Floating shelves are feeling complicated over here.

Love the soft Sage green colored cabinets. Much prettier than the stark dark green that so many are using. Tired of harsh forest green. Beautiful makeover. Does not look like the same kitchen at all! Nice parents, both mum and dad were lovely. Definitely see the family resemblance! 🎉

This level of eclectic would drive me nuts, but it’s definitely in line with your style. The door is the ultimate showstopper and ties the kitchen to the living room, THAT door is the character of the house. The tile is beautiful. I personally couldn’t live with open shelving, but it’s certainly a great styling opportunity. The door is stunning.
Question: the tile seems quite thick and the space between the wall and the stove quite narrow on camera. Did you measure if the thickness of the tile plus the binding material would fit or it’s not a close shave in reality and it’s only the camera deceiving my eyes?
