I just want to thank you all SO much for the support on this!!! I was thinking of possibly remaking this to be much shorter. I feel like my videos have gotten better, and I do apologize for any rambling! Haha. But regardless, I am so flattered that you liked it and that this has helped you! I also added chapter markers recently to make it super easy to find the info you need ^_^

So while the "definitive" eddition on steam/ios/DS is good with the script and better translations, the added content is absolutely terrible. it doesn't play or feel ANYTHING like the rest of the game or the originally intended design. going up and down a mountain 55 times with unavoidable battles is a MASSIVE change from the original game and original intent. the added equipment was never intended as part of the game sdesign. you supposed to have to choose between auto haste/shell/protect and not be able to get them all. the 50% dmg boost from prism specs/sun specs was intended to be a one of, not something for the entire party. the dreamseeker weapon is pointless, rainbow sword maxes Cronos attack already, and 70% crit combined with Cronos base 25% makes the 90% of the dreamseeker literally pointless and the addition attack doesn't change his actual attack value at all.
mind you i absolutely love this game and love anyone who advocates it and tells people to play it and i do enjoy "most" of the updated script and everything the "newer" versions added. but the dimensional gates, the dream devourer and the lost sanctum are trash and should be ignored. they are so unbelievably different from the actual game with the only similarity being "time travel"
there are 0 pointless fetch quests in CT. but yet the lost sanctum is just a slew of 20 of those.
sorry for the rant but that extra content does more harm than good.

The most affordable physical copy you can buy is the PS1 version part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles collection. Which can go for between maybe $25-39 depending if it’s the green label or black label version. Plus the collection comes with Final Fantasy 4 which is a FANTASTIC game alone so you get two classic RPGs. Can’t go wrong with that at all.
The second is Nintendo DS version which is pretty good because unlike the PS1 version, it has NO load times. Plus it’s a fairly beautiful port IMO. And it’s on average $45-60 complete in box.
Obviously the most expensive (least affordable) version is the Super Nintendo version, the original. If you’re a big time retro game connoisseur (like me) you wanna own the SNES version and you’ll pay up to $100+ for just the cartridge alone depending on the condition. Don’t even get me started on a boxed copy and how much that goes for, but lucky me I own a complete boxed copy. 😊

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bingo, the PS1 version is affordable, and has 2 games that are excellent on 1 disc, while the others will make your wallet cry out in severe pain. I'm looking at DS copies on Ebay now, and I laugh heartily at the most recommended one on this video, when a copy of it will cost you a fortune. They are not $45-60 for a boxed copy, try $100+ now. And that's in a span of 4 MONTHS!

I remember going to a video game convention in 1995 at the Pasadena Convention Center shortly after this game was released. I found out about the convention from flyers that were at a local video game store. Admission as I remember was a little expensive but it advertised 50 dealers with new and used games plus merchandise. Every dealer had Chrono Trigger material and I have regretted I didn't buy some of what they had for sale. The dealers also had merchandise from many SNES games including items from Japan. I bought a box with trading card packs from Final Fantasy 5, which is my favorite game. Dealers also had trading cards from Japan for Chrono Trigger. I just wish I had bought some because I have never sent those cards again since- not even on eBay and I have searched. Dealers also had promotional posters for Chrono Trigger from Japan for $5. Looking back I should have bought 20 of those posters. There was also a set of Chrono Trigger figures made in Japan for sale but I didn't buy them either. I did buy a set of Super Mario World figures made in Japan and I still have those. Unfortunately there was only that one convention. I got a flyer for the next convention but it was cancelled because Nintendo stopped the show because a lot of the dealers were selling unauthorized merchandise like the Super Wild Card floppy disc game copier. This devise attached to the top of the Super Nintendo and allowed you to copy and play SNES games from floppy discs. I remember other convention attendees telling me that Nintendo will shut this thing down fast if they find out those pirate machines are being sold here. Dealers were also selling floppy discs of SNES games for $2 that could be played in the Super Wild Card device. Gamers liked the machine because they could Boy Chrono Trigger for $2 and play it instead of paying $69 for the game. I still wish I had bought those Chrono Trigger posters at that convention.

On the script re-writes: One thing a lot of people fail to understand is that the biggest change in localization wasn't the process of the localization, it was that moving away from cartridge technology **allowed** for better & more complete scripts.
Japanese uses Kanji, which is a logographic script... or in other words 1 word == 1 character. While an absolute pain for humans to learn, the good thing about logographic scripts is they compress really, really well as data.
What this resulted in during the SNES era is it was literally impossible to translate some games and still fit the game into a marketable cartridge. CT was heavily cut down simply to be able to make the product available in English. And that was one of the lucky situations... other games never came over here during their original era at all because of the issue ( Trials of Mana ).
Something I always point out, because I find the intersection of culture/business/technology fasciniating... but also because it gives credit where it is due to Tom Woolsey... The man didn't just change things for the sake of changing them, he changed them so the games could have any possibility to be in English back in the 1990s.

I haven't played through Chrono Trigger since renting it from Blockbuster as a 14yro (didn't get much sleep that weekend). So, I started playing the PS version on a Vita and the DS ver on a 3DS XL but didn't know of the (content) differences aside from the obvious use of the 2nd screen w/ the DS ver. Thanks!
Another aspect to consider when playing on a handheld is the display quality. I love the Vita's OLED screen and the game looks so vibrant on it. In the 'Original' Screen mode, it is basically pixel perfect - using 4 display pixels per 1 game pixel albeit with black borders on all sides. You can maximize the display vertically with 'Custom' Screen mode and it's hard to notice any loss of sharpness.
However, the long blackouts between scenes are annoying which is weird because there is no spinning CD to wait for. E.g if you go in and out of Crono's house, the transition takes about 3-4s. Even longer on the PSP!
I definitely will play through the DS ver to experience the new stuff and not suffer through the long transitions. Fortunately, my 3DS (Hyrule Ed.) has IPS displays so the image looks good (but not as good as that OLED).
Now, if I really feel nostalgic, I play Chrono Trigger on the SNES mini.

Though, I got the "itch" to play after a few years and booted up the Steam version (bought it during launch and HATED it) and was enjoying it. Then realized...I was enjoying it. I'm SOOO glad they made it good now! My question for the people that had crashes are have they tried it since all the dev patches have come out? Or were they using mods a few years ago to make it better (which aren't needed anymore)?

I remember playing chrono trigger for the first time in January of 2003 when I was 13 years old via snes 9x emulation. I remember I downloaded a list of roms and as I was browsing through various title screens, this game really stood out. I remembered enjoying so much, that in 2006/2007 I believe I went to a local used game store and found a SNES copy for 27$. It was not in the best of the shape as the sticker was partially scratched up and the cartridge was yellowed, but I didn't care I just really wanted to play the physical cart. I made it my own tradition at that point to play chrono trigger every year in the month of december. I kept that tradition for at least 5 years.
after college when I moved away from my parents place to an apartment, got into a zelda craze and bought various zelda games I did not own, which lead me to buying a New 3DS in January 2005. So I Wouldn't just be buying Zelda games, I purchased the DS Copy of Chrono Trigger for around 17$ bucks. I couldn't remember if it was used or an unsold new copy. Chrono Trigger DS became the game I would play on vacations when I'm on a plane essentially. I think I finally finished my first DS playthrough of it during a Caribbean cruise I was on in December of 2018.
Overall out of the two copies of chrono trigger that I own, I prefer the SNES Version. Sure it lacks the cut scenes, and new unessential areas, but I felt the SNES version was my favorite simply because nostagia, and how the game felt overall. Another thing I noticed, which was not mentioned in this video, is that I feel, while they did great liberties with the music in this version, I personally feel the DS's sound quality is actually inferior to running a super nintendo through a television. The sound quality really was a big let down for me. When I played the DS version I used a decent set of ear buds, and the stock DS speaker, and just was not impressed with the audio quality.
It is still one of my favorite games over all time. I have not re-played chrono trigger since finishing up the DS version on my cruise, so I feel it is overdue for another play through. This time I will play the snes version again since I do not think i Played it since the early 2010s.

@18:30 I'm older and the original SNES version was the first version I played. It has a lot of nostalgia for me. Younger gamers or anyone that didn't play the SNES version first wouldn't understand. I actually had my original copy until a few years ago. I don't know what possessed me but I sold it. I had the cart and the manual. They were both in very good condition. I recently bought a new copy of just the cart. I wish I hadn't sold my original copy so I wouldn't have had to spend more money buying it back.
The only other version I've played is the PS1 version. I still have the copy I bought when it was new. That was part of my reasoning for selling my SNES copy. What that I had the PS1 version.

I've been hearing about how good Chrono Trigger is for years and finally decided to pick it up a few weeks ago off Ebay. I went with the DS version and have been playing it on an original fat DS, and besides the low back light level on it, the game itself has been a completed joy! Its maybe Best looking game on the DS. I just went back to 65000000 B.C.for the 2nd time, things are getting real..

Complete copies of this game on Ebay go for between $100-$150, not worth it for a piece of plastic with circuitboards in it. The game isn't rare, but resellers have all but killed the market for this version. And the more people pay the inflated price, the higher it will go. You also have to look out for fakes for the DS version, plenty of those floating around. The Japanese version sells for a more sensible price, but unlike the PSP version of Final Fantasy 3, which plays in English on western PSP systems, this one does not.

Great video! I'm just starting Chrono Trigger on DS and nice to see that that version ranks as high as it does!
As I'm from Europe the game was never released here on the SNES. But when I played and absolutely loved Secret Of Mana I also Saw screenshots of their next game, Chrono Trigger and I was hyped! But it never came out... A few years later I had a few years I didn't play a lot. But when I started gaming again it was coming out here at last! I bought it on release, started playing it and loved it... But for some reason I had a few weeks I didn't play it and I was so lost when I vale back. So I quit... But now it's finally there! I'm going to finish Chrono Trigger!

If you do get the PSOne Classics. Change the resolution of your PS3 to 480P if you don’t plan on playing them on a CRT.
Also if possible Change the Screen size on your TV to 4:3 that way so you can get a pretty good original experience that isn’t stretched and the game will look sharp.

Luckily when I got back into gaming I still had a PS1 copy lying around which was not perfect, but a great experience nonetheless. I absolutely agree the DS port is the definitive version though: crisp pixel art, better script and the ability to play on the go. Oh yes please 👍🏼🥳

Aha, I'm just about to start playing Chrono Trigger on my DS. I obtained a copy just after Christmas and it currently occupies slot two in my game library, right after the first Phoenix Wright game, which I finally finished today. I put Chrono Trigger top of the list in case I'm having a bad day, it'll be the first thing I see when I boot up the DS, which I often do when in doubt of what to do next, and I'll hopefully have the sense to escape right into it. In the last year I have been pleasantly surprised by jumping into the Dragon Quest series of RPGs and subsequently found the fandom to be a very creative and vibrant group of people. Chrono Trigger has been on my horizon for some time now, what with it being in games review magazines for the SNES when I was growing up, and more recently, glowing praise from Game Grumps' Arin Hanson and Tim Rogers of Kotaku as well as various others

I played the heck out of Chrono Trigger on an emulator years ago. It is one of many games I would have loved to play on my SNES. Don't get me wrong... I loved playing games I had, but save-battery games were expensive back then!
When I happened upon the DS port used, I don't regret impulse buying it, because the resale value has gone up I got it for $36 and minus the poster it was complete in box in 2016). I love the extra features like the Bestiary and Ending Log. My only real nitpicks is that even though there is an option to disable to cut scenes we still can't see the original attract mode. While that isn't a major detriment, we don't hear the full version of the Chrono Trigger theme. The game has a music test where it is absent as well. Otherwise, it feels like the best version.
I personally liked the updated script, but not everyone will agree with that. I think it's because of 2 reasons: 1, the Ted Woolsey Script still has an emotional impact despite having to make it kid friendly. 2. The wacky aspects of the translation may have a bit of a camp-value to it now. It is evident where localized names remained.
Another nitpick is that although there is a Classic Mode, the battle screen is kind of unreadable. It's one of those aspects where the port development team had their heart in the right place, but executed it poorly. They probably wanted to prepare for the possibility of porting it outside of the DS after making that version but never saw it happen.
It is easily my favorite JRPG of all time because of its replay value, soundtrack, and character development, the list goes on!
A lot of JRPGs and RPGs in general are short. Games have elements to make it feel longer like level grinding. Since Chrono Trigger has done away with the Random Battle Syndrome most JRPGs have, it feels even shorter. New Game Plus makes it a lot shorter because you've already done the heavy lifting.
Thank you for your detailed comparison, I was curious about the other versions!

Thank you so much for this! I like to make documentaries and so I like to attempt to have the best balance between presentation, convenience and relatability to my audience. You've made the choices on what to record pretty clear for me and I thank you for that. :)
Although one potential critique (even though it's not certain): The DS version likely does have a minor drawback when compared to the PS1 version (and especially PC), with its cartridge I'd suspect its FMV cutscenes are probably noticeably lower resolution if compared side-by-side. If you're not recording like I am it probably doesn't matter though since it has a smaller screen.

So glad I finally got the ds version but Frog not having old English speak weirded me out. There's tons of jrpgs on the ds that are also amazing but yes, nothing compares to Trigger. That being said whats your favorite party? I'm a huge fan of Nadia, Ayla, and Chrono. Nadia to start hasteing the ☆☆ speed tabbed group so you can spam ridiculous ammounts of final kick and all party members have healing ability. It's a good money maker two with twin charm so the ethers can keep flowing.

As someone who owns the still-working SNES and CT cartridge from my childhood + the PS1 version AND the DS version, I really didn't need to click on this video. Why, then? Because it's frickin' Chrono Trigger! There's honestly no better reason than that (and also to meet a fellow CT enthusiast). I think coming here was simply to choose which version I should replay again right now, because I have a personal tradition of playing CT on an annual basis. As if the first initials of my username weren't enough of a hint already, Chrono Trigger is indeed my favorite game of all time, too. (It's also apparent with the fact that I gave my cat the name Alfador.)
I will say that I personally don't consider the Woolsey script to be a drawback. It still retains that nostalgic charm for me, even with its many mistranslations, and also has some merits that the original Japanese script lacked. Primarily in the humor department. How Woolsey dealt with the censorships makes scenes like Toma's pub crawling and the prehistoric party way funnier, depending on who's in your party. Also, Magus lacks any real sense of humor in the other translations of the game to sound more like a generic JRPG villain, which breaks my heart a bit since he's always been a personal favorite of mine and makes me more inclined to replay SNES rather than the PS1 or DS versions.

I had never had a ds before, I heard great things about this game so I picked up a ds lite in excellent condition (girl who owned it before took great care of it) for around 70 nzd (around 50 usd) bundled together with about 6 or 7 other games, and I got the ds cartridge (Japanese version brand new) for 68nzd (50usd), it has English on it so no issues. Game looks great on the DS lite screens, the sprite work is super charming, using earphones and the music is fantastic, some of the best game music I've ever heard. DS lite has amazing battery life too. Playing Chrono Trigger for the first time and loving it, 20 hours in and the time has flown by. Story pacing is great, characters are so likeable, it's already one of my all time fave games and I expect to complete it in the next day or two. I think you are right, the DS version is most likely the best.

I played them because of availability at the time, and even now I prefer to play these versions. Granted I play them on my Ipad and reviewers seem to only look at them on mobiles, but that does not excuse the fact that I adapted to using touch controls and my fingers never got sore. Hello Katie, tkank you for the video. I am French, in our country we didn't have the chance to have this great game at the time of super nintendo (snes), it was only in Japan and in USA. But for DS we finally had this chance, we had our version. Actually there are fans who have made translations, and some even produce the ROM cartrige. And untill now I still haven't played to this game. I want to buy it now (for my birthday), and so I am looking for information about it, so I found your video to help me to choose a version. And it looks like the DS version would be the good one, even if I am mostly a snes gamer, but as I said, we never had official version for snes in France. So I may try the DS version, although it's quite expensive now, more than when you made this video I think. So tkanks again, you are very interesting and charming. Take care

Very late response but I loved your video.
Going to clarify this here. Akira Toriyama did not animate the Full Motion Video Cutscenes. Several animators were hired on board to use his designs and adapt them into animation for the cutscenes. A good majority of them came from Toei who worked on Toriyama’s other projects; Dragon Ball and Dr Slump, and so were already familiar with his artstyle.
Not the biggest deal in the world but I like giving credit where it’s due.

  • @CyberAngel573
    @CyberAngel573 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My list is slightly different
PS1: The SNES version with Anime cutscenes and 4-5 load times per battle is not worth it.
STEAM: I think it overall looks ugly. It plays well enough and has the fastest load times, but something is off about it.
ANDROID/IOS: Cheapest version and a lot of people have smart phones that can play it. Plus touch screen interface.
    SNES: A classic
DS: Best one to play. Has all of the bells and whistles. Looks great. Only downside is that the absence of Sony's sound chip can make some sound effects and songs sound a little off.
