I was familiar with Prince since 1978 when he started. My sister had his 2nd album and loved him. I liked his songs that I'd heard on the radio, but it was sometime in the fall of 1982 when I was in Record Den flipping through albums when they played this. The synth horn got my attention. Then came the bass with the synth horns. Then came the scream. I looked up at the speakers. I looked around like wtf? Then I went to the counter and said "Who is this"? The clerks said "Prince". I said "I Wanna Be Your Lover Prince". The clerks then said "yes". I said "Imma need that right now". That was the beginning of my Prince fandom that lasted till the end of his genius 38/39 year career!!!
I was in high school in Eden Prairie, MN during those early days. Prince lived in EP too!! About six blocks from my best friend. He had a smaller purple house. My mom was a bank teller and she waiting on him multiple times. He would bring two girls in with him, she said. Then I graduated and went to all the Minneapolis clubs and they always played him. I spent a lot of time at First Avenue! Love that place!
You mentioned hearing the song in the store and purchasing the album off that. That's incredible, that only happened to me once in 2003 or 2004, I was in Best buy and they were playing a new public enemy track, I asked the clerk did they have it and they have a display of it and another PE album that can out that same day, I got both of them. New whirl odor.
Prince was one of a kind!!! There will never be another like him!!! So much raw talent!! He composed, arranged and produced his own music!!! He knew his worth and worked hard to be recognized and valued for the work he created!!! He refused to be exploited and manipulated by greedy record executives and was determined to own his catalog of music, which he accomplished!!! He is the epitome of a true artist who accomplished what few could ever dream of!!! RIP Prince!!! You are greatly missed and will never be forgotten!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤

" On the 2 and 4, y'all stay in time ".....people was clapping off rhythm....Prince had to maintain the funk that was in the building at that particular time!!!!
🗣️There is none other like Prince (Rogers Nelson) I go all the way back to His soft and wet Album (70s) He will never be Duplicated and never Imitated ( ❣️RIP ) Your legacy and contribution of musical genius to our world will forever, stand unblemished, and never unbroken 🎧🎼🎹🎤🎸🎷🎺
Done at Much Music Studio in Toronto when Prince lived there. He’s even wearing a shirt from the Raptor’s - Toronto’s basketball team. He apparently watched many of their games in person.
"Somebody call the police" 'cause these white gals and boys just went crazy! So sweet to see everyone dancing, especially the dudes in the audience lol 💜🙏
Damn....I keep forgetting how good he was, I know it..I've witnessed it myself 6 times...But every time I see something like this it's like the first time. saw Maceo twice too:)
This soul brotha is the most gifted musical talent in the history of Homo sapiens. And you won’t see this level of musical greatest in your great grand-babies lifetime. PERIOD!!!
I don't know how this has no likes because I literally just had a laughing fit alone in my living room thinking about Prince being in heaven just going around being the Pied Piper of FUNK.
Thanks so much for sharing!! I majorly love this!! It sounds totally cool!! Prince sang it so magnificently!! Prince gave an incredible performance!! Prince looked so gorgeous & so cool!! Prince always knew how to get you moving!! Love it!! Prince truly is our one & only Master forever!! Prince reigns in our hearts forever!!
Even after all these years this is one song I never tire of, the basics of Funk for all to hear..... In my opinion (doesn't mean I'm right) he is still yet to be fully appreciated. If you listen beyond all the frills and whistles that modern music now introduces, his sense of timing and rhythm are second to none. Still a huge loss to all music fans and the industry alike.
Wow,,, I'm watching this wishing I was there but still can't help but shake the leg right in my spot. Prince always has that beat that makes you wanna move.
Same. Something about this performance in particular does that to me - I think it's the way he can go from putting on an imperious performance at the Superbowl to bringing so many diverse people together in a tiny, intimate setting like this. Imagine having been one of the people in this audience, sharing that moment with him...
Heard a song he sung back in the days and one one of the verses says”it’s true what you’ve heard about me I like other guys” does anyone remember the name of that song???
I think that Prince was under the influence during this performance because of his pain. If you watch his performance in "Motherless Child". He's not on game
thanks Walter . . I've had the audio of this version for some time and I think its the best version , but havent seen it before . . . I sure hope history is kind to this multi talented man . . a lot of his stuff has been removed from youtube . . . not a great idea , I reckon . . . . more live Prince, I say . . show exactly where the benchmark is , to aspiring artists.
Did you know that when 1999 was first released on CD this song was left off to facilitate a single disc? And boring synthesizer filler All The Critics Love You In New York was left on!
I've been blown away by Prince I didn't no damn princess cut it out that's disrespectful when you know I didn't put that Prince is a God greatness on display this song had me so hyped you Fred Wesley and the goddesses on the saxophone the bass guitar and I think there were two goddesses playing bass I'm high I want some good California green I'm I'm going to stop this comment because they really fucking around I'm starting it was supposed to start they putting me back so you know Prince the god he's a bad motherfuker and I can't say I'm missing him because actually he's still here listen to his music listen to his interviews listen to his teachings
Prince is a musical GENIUS. 4EVER

If there was another band scheduled to follow Prince, they have my deepest sympathies.

R.I.P. John Blackwell, doing an amazing job here as usual.
Of all the bad ass drummers in Prince's bands, I still maintain that Blackwell was the best
