Cool, I have one with the raised mound but it's dated 1913. It's in wonderful condition. I found it in my grandma's attic years ago. I'll save it for my son.
Using Nic-a-Date or similar acids to bring up a date is great for satisfying curiosity but not for increasing a coin's value. Nearly all dealers and collectors consider treated coins to be "damaged goods".
+OsakaRose Thanks for your kind response. There really isn't any other way to bring out the date on a worn nickel, unfortunately. My own thoughts are that you should go ahead anyway. Dateless nickels are considered to be fillers or culls; the damage done by Nic-a-Date can't reduce their value any further. My cautions were aimed at people who thought that using acid would somehow turn a worthless coin into a valuable one. But because you know Nic-a-Date is just for satisfying your curiosity, I'd say give it a try and let everyone here know what you found!
This is a great way to learn, i save all my change and pick up every coin i see on the ground, 2 years ago my wife and i did x mas shopping with one 2 gal jug it had $1,800 in coins lol and true.
You can also find Buffalo nickels if you go through boxes of nickels. I found about four rolls of them going through around 200 boxes of nickels. Most of them were either dateless or common dates
Interesting note about the nickle stuff. I"m in law enforcement and the state firearms forensics dept. uses a similar product to get serial numbers to show on firearms that have had numbers ground off.
Just a Question for ya. I have a Buffalo Nickel - Not Showing The Year by the neck, but the animal is also standing on "Table Like Stool" and no date there either..? So, no date on front and no "Five Cents" written by the feet either. Could it be worn down that much..? Thanks, M.
Yes, buffalo nickels are notorious for having the date and lettering worn off. They were circulated heavily for many decades, and the detail is raised up above the rim, making them wear much quicker.
This video was very informative 👍 @8:14 my no date nickel looks just like that. I can't make out the fourth leg. I want to clean it but I'm nervous about it. Did you use that solution all over the shiny nickels in the beginning of the video? New to this. Are there natural methods to remove the rust and corrosion? This is very exciting!
I have foundation 1955 s penny but on the back is some kind of metal. Like it was double struck? It doesn't reveal anything from the back due to the piece on top of it.
Technically the stuff used is not exactly an "acid" it is an acidic salt specifically Iron(III) chloride, which is a distinct vivid yellow. If you use Muriatic (hydrochloric) acid to de-rust steel or iron the acid bath turns that bright yellow... I have at this time accumulated several gallons of the stuff. your pipes are in little danger if you have the water running while you dump it, and leave it running for a minute or so afterwards.
if you have some old coins, i suggest becoming a member on cointalk.com it is a very informative site that has helped me multiple times. get an account, create a thread, make sure you got some good pics of reverse and the obverse. you will get responses from experts very soon
You've gained a new sub. I remember using the acid date indicator many years ago and it seemed to work pretty well. As you stated, don't do this to a coin that still has a visable date and always follow the instructions on the bottle. There can't be anything much worse than finding that you've destroyed a valuable coin by not following the instructions. If there's any doubt, leave the coin as it is and get some professional advice. It's ironic that you show a 1937 nickel in your video. I just happened to receive one in change from a convienence store the other day. It was in very good condition. It's hard to believe that it was still in circulation, but it's always a good idea to check your change because you never know what you'll come across, even today.
Sandra Pressley I have one Buffalo nickel 1928 then I have one With a hole in it. It was like that when my husband got it. We’ve had them in a lock box for 30-40 years
also for the 1913 nickels, look at the "Five Cents", Type one is farther away from the edge, rather than type 2, which has it's F in Five practically touching the edge.
much easier to just look at the line above "Five Cents" if there is a distinct line then its a type 2 but if its just ground without the line distinguishing between the denomination and the ground then its type 1. :)
Hi I have one of those nickel but in the rear part where your supposed to se the Buffalo it's like hollow like if for some reason it's missing the material
Guys used to remove that leg and try to pawn it off as a three legger, just so you know. There was also a coin that they would coat in gold to make it look like they were a gold coin that was simular. I dont remember what it was,a five cent piece that just said five but not cents,so guys would use them as five dollar gold coin pieces. That sounds correct.
I've tried a couple times and didn't work for me. Left a nasty brown discolored spot too. I'm sure it may work on some, but nothing corroded or too far gone.
I have a date less Buffalo Nickel , encased in plastic. The buffalo is standing on a small long ground base with all four legs.. Below the Indian head the date is not visible. I do not want to Date Lis to pull up the year . But , below were the date should be is a Mint faint mark. What could you suggest the direction I GO. Knowing it could be a 1913-1915 could be worth more as it is . No acid !! Thanks Frank Pennsylvannia
Hey JD love your channel. I've gotten into coin collecting and I'm saving up for a metal detector and wanna start doin that as well keep up the great video's.
your 1913 buffalo nickel, is a double stamped coin. Double die obverse.. Look around the chin, nose, everywhere around the coin on the front. Not sure if someone else brought that to your attention, but I'd double check it again.
What is the name of the liquid, you use to clean up the coin in order to see the date? Please, send me the name of the liquid, thank you very much in advance, best regards
Could you do a video/updated video on regular coins and how to find the imperfections, or how to find the ones that cost more than what they are worth? I *Really* loved this video, and would love to see more.
coinexplorer usually olive oil,it can still be hard to see the date but 9 times out of 10 you can still pick out the date. Different people have different results,I am wondering if a bit of catsup on the date area would so the same though I doubt it,I have tryed using it years ago as a kid and the coin I used it on was not in very good shape to begin with, the result was a pitted but shiny coin. When a coin Indian head or Nickle gets crusty, that part is usually the acids in the soul attacking the metal, therefore when you try cleaning it,those places end up pitted worse. I would be interested in that nickle acid stuff but I dont find many buffalo nickles with no date on them anyways. Two that I can think of,out of a dozen.
What a acid dated buffalo are worth it to treat and how to list it ..thanks for all ur vid's. Just going to get into digging for exercise and feel like it's a treasure hunt. Thanks x again .retired firefighter.
Just to chime in with a few helpful notes, a plastic lid from an old cool whip container, pringles can lid, etc can be very handy extraditing that thing to the sink. Uh, if that stuff is corrosive, GLOVES AND GLASSES!!! If that stuff is expensive, you can use a q tip and apply it. It would use up alot less of it to get the same job done. Probably 50% less or better. Definitely let that water run longer than you did if that stuff is concentrated! Nice coin platform!! Plenty of light, smooth hard surface. Your neighbors might get creeped out thinking you're watching them if they don't get a close look at ya! 😆😆😆😆 Overall good video. Very helpful. A closer shot with an electronic microscope doing comparison shots of the error and the business strike can get your message across better. 😊
Hello JD:) I have a question? I'm not into any kinds of business of whatsoever after I subscribed to your channel I went through my pile of variety coins and I found a buffalo nickel that match one of your 1937 3 legged buffalo. My nickel has a little d below & between five cents but the date was rubbed off completely. I'm positive my nickel may have been a 1937 as well:) I checked my nickel over and over with this video and for sure all the details and descriptions match my nickel:) What should I do:)?
If you think you have one, I would recommend having a local dealer look at it. Then send it into a reputable grading company such as PCGS to be authenticated and slabbed. If it's not genuine they will return it with an explanation.
Macro photo the nickel, send nickel in with photo copy and question written on photo. Mark points upon nickel photo that are ID capable and question them, "Hey will the scratches I marked upon the photo lower the value? Thanks". This may remove capability of switching coin. Include personal ID in photo original in order to proclaim "It's my Precioussesesss." Good luck. Other option is have it done at a coin show.
JD, nice video, my Dad got into penny & all sorts of coin collecting, last night I opened a proof set from 1963 D mint, the quarter has so much extra silver on the reverse it if a the nickel is about 4 grains under what both should weigh together, it's still in the placsit but I cut them where no air would get in, I like finding errors like the 1987 D that's has 3 of every letter & date & has no copper & is Not Zink, as any serious coin collector would, there is no telling what you will find in pocket change, also using a old metal detector I found a 1, 2.5,3, 5 & 10 dollar gold & 2 Morgans, the gold was in great shape, the 2 Morgans I still don't have the dates, but both have CC on the reverse, the glass jar kept the reverses away from the elements, how I don't know, also I found a half dollar 3 feet away that has asphalt on it, this is the OLD halves type, but why it would be so close to a small gold stash & covered in asphalt & with the prints of a grinding machine on both sides after socked in gas for 10 days, I made out two dates 2nd & last, 2nd is a 8, last is a 4, what a waste just the thought of it being a 1804 US hald, it makes me sick to not know how it got there unless it was stuck on a tractor when I had my garden made up & he had stuck to the tire from a job where they dug up a huge hoard in Jackson, TN a week be fore he did my Garden & it cound have got stuck to his tire as asphalt was being repreocessed, wow what if?
How much to subscribe? Oh my gosh I have nickel.that is a 2004 or 2005 the way the Buffalo is standing you can only see 3 Legs do you think it’s worth anything??? I amSandra Pressley
You have warned against using Nic-a-Date on silver but I do not know how much Ag is in Jefferson nickels. I wish to clean show and show possible one mint mark over another. Where do you get the acid from
I hace one Nickel from 1901 in good conditions. How much is this.
Barbara Harris 1$ max.
Where do you get the acid call Nick adot
where do u metal detect because i have no idea where to start
Hola, yo tengo muchas monedas de búfalos Americana, tengo 85 unidad de búfalos. Donde las puedo vender.
I have bags full of these things, I've checked quite a few and have no idea what I'm looking for lol.
What would it look like if you dipped the whole coin in nickadate?
does that distroy the nickle and the price with nick a date
Without a date they're only worth about a quarter each. So there's really nothing to lose by doing this.
I never knew about the date restoration using acid. I have used oil and tilt it the right way to see what date it was.
scott firman how did you do that and what oil did use?
coinexplorer usually olive oil,it can still be hard to see the date but 9 times out of 10 you can still pick out the date. Different people have different results,I am wondering if a bit of catsup on the date area would so the same though I doubt it,I have tryed using it years ago as a kid and the coin I used it on was not in very good shape to begin with, the result was a pitted but shiny coin. What metal detector do you use
Okay:) I trust your advice but what if PCGS replace my miracle nickel:(
Macro photo the nickel, send nickel in with photo copy and question written on photo.

You can use it on nickels. It works fine on Jefferson and V nickels. I would just avoid the part silver wartime nickels. All others are OK.
