Merfolk needs more mono blue legendary creatures with more than 2 power. If Kopala was a 3/3 instead of a 2/2, it would probably be a good option to slot in the main. It essentially gives your merfolk Ward 2.
These are great lessons for newer players and reminders for experienced players. I did take away the importance of slowing down. Sometimes doing nothing can have a big impact especially when a lot of this deck can play at instant speed. This is true when we have the cards or we are just bluffing.

I actually caught another mistake at 4:01 where Trickster taps a Ragavan at Upkeep when it should be done at the combat step. This is particularly important because the opponent has the option to Dash in a Ragavan and dump their old one.
On the turn where the thoughtseize was played and the hexcatcher was on the battlefield and he vialed in the lord then the opponent played a lightning bolt he could’ve sacrificed the hexcatcher to itself because it was targeted by the bolt anyways to counter the thoughtseize
At 40 min, they should have played the other Vial. The opponent already knows they have it in hand b/c of Thoughtseize, so its not even bluffing something
Thanks you for this amazing content. It was very interesting to focus on mistakes compared to view just how we could win with merfolk😁. At some scenes i couldn't watch the screen like a horror movie😱. But i'm sure i made a lot of this mistakes myselfe😂. Thx and please more of them😉.
35:01 would it have been a better play to turn the Inspiring Vantage into an island instead of the Sunbaked Canyon since the Canyon does damage to them when they tap it for mana? When its an island, it stops the draw mechanic, but is 1 card more relevant than the 1 life per tap?
It sort of depends, the sunbaked canyon counts as an extra card. My general rule of thumb is that if the Burn opponent has a lot of mana, I prefer to seas the Sunbaked Canyon. If the opponent is clearly stuck on mana (like at 2) then I'll Seas the Inspiring Vantage to force the opponent to damage themselves. Also they dont want to sac the Horizon land if they are stuck on 2 lands.

Kopala would be still not a good option since its ability only affects spells not triggered abilities ie Fury.

45:00 the problem is even bigger when you play in upkeep, because if they have an answer they can use DRC to filter for their draw step.

At 38:45, since the hexcatcher is going to die to the lightning bolt, sac it to counter the thoughtsieze to keep your subtlety.

Why not counter the thoghtsieze with the hex catcher with bolt on the stack?

Counter spell is totally not a good choice in any modern merfolk deck.
I think it's fine. I just don't play it right now because I'm running 4x Cavern and 4x Mutavault.
