    Great list.
Ken Norton (Jr.) was hurting people. I remember him being responsible for breaking a couple of legs. He and Willie McGinnest are 2 of the biggest thumpers this side of Ray Lewis.
I knew Bradie James was legit when Parcells showed up and made an assessment of what he had. He declared: "Bradie James gets it." Which was all I needed to hear.
"Eugene the hitting machine." - super props. I didn't know those stats.
Super-solid Breunig replaced the great Lee Roy Jordan in the middle, I believe.

Good list. Last I checked (a few years ago) Jordan still ranked 3rd among NFL LBs in career INTs. Though smallish he was extremely tough and hit very hard. That was bad news for opponents since he could fly sideline to sideline. I think he belongs in the HoF.
It's a shame that Norton ended up as more of a 49er than a Cowboy. I agree that Eugene The Hitting Machine likely makes some Pro Bowls if the team was better then.

@@thelogicalcowboy After my earlier post I thought "Oh crap! I forgot Jerry Tubbs!", despite him being on my All Time Cowboys practice squad, lol. The first Cowboys MLB definitely deserves a mention, and I just checked and saw some other posters beat me to the punch. I'd probably put him over James since he's a pure 4-3 MLB and maybe even Lockhart since Tubbs managed to make a Pro Bowl when Dallas was a struggling expansion team with a losing record. Tubbs had 17 INTs (15 with Dallas) while James had 2 and Lockhart had 6. On the other hand Tubbs had 4 sacks while James and Lockhart each had 16. So legitimate arguments can be made either way.

Love this list and whole heartedly agree on lee roy jordan. It's down right criminal he is not in the hall of fame already. Lb stats are hard to judge since team recorded their own stats for tackles and sacks for 60s and 70s but the one stats that was universal was int. His 32 int is practically better than most modern Era lbs and he did it at a time when offenses where not throwing like there are now back when he played.

I consider myself a huge Cowboys fan, but I grew up in the late 80's and into the 90's. A couple of the players listed from the 70's and 80's I never saw play, and they don't get much love in documentaries that I've seen from that time period. My dad also never mentioned them, usually only talking about guys like Staubach and Lilly. Needless to say, these lists have been very enlightening. Much appreciated.

So many great players on those teams in the twilight of the Landry Era are now all but forgotten. Eugene Lockhart was among the best of them. It's such a shame that he missed out on the glory years that were to come under Jimmy Johnson but he just didn't have the speed at Linebacker that Jimmy felt the team needed for that position (and he was right). Ken Norton Jr was an absolute force in the middle, part of that final excellent draft of 88 that saw the Landry front office finally get it right. If Landry couldn't go out with a winning record at least he could take some comfort from the fact that some major building blocks from 3 Super Bowls were found on his watch.

Yes, totally agree. Tho Landry struggled the last three years of his tenure, unbeknown to him, he actually partly set down the building blocks for what would become the second Dallas Cowboys dynasty of the early 90s with names like Michael Irvin, Ken Norton, Jr, Kevin Gogan (OL) and Bill Bates, among others. So we can all say, as Cowboys fans, Tom Landry, in a sense, partly helped build those Super Bowl teams that Jimmy Johnson built. Landry laid the foundation.

It seems that Jordan was a drop dead lock for #1, quite a bit better than any of the others. Second, I became a Cowboys fan early in Bob Breunig's career. I always really liked him, but have never really known how he compared to other guys. So it was great to hear about his career here.

How bad is our linebacker history that bradie James, Ken Norton, and Eugene Lockhart make the list? Ken Norton was great, but his tenure here wasn't long enough. Plus, he didn't play mlb that first super bowl. Eugene was cut for holding out and never heard from again. He benefited from more than average snaps. Why is Dat Nguyen not on the list?

Norton play at middle linebacker in 91, 93 is why I put him in the top 5. 91 and 93 were two of some of the greatest years in Cowboys history in terms of importance. Norton at Middle Linebacker was one of the reason for that. Keep in mind that the defense struggled in 93 until Norton resumed the starting position in week 4. Dat Nguyen was amazing, but he's not taking the place of Norton. No way. Lockhart is one of the greatest linebackers in history! His numbers prove it. I'm not going to go into his stats.
In 2008, Bradie James became only the second Cowboys defender (Eugene Lockhart - 222 in 1989) to reach 200 tackles in a season (202 tackles). James was the first player to lead the cowboys in tackles for more than three straight seasons, eventually reaching a total of six consecutive years, the longest streak in franchise history. James history is too stacked to leave him off.

A little late but hey 👋
    1. DeMarcus Ware was LB before DL and as a LB was not far behind Bruce Smith sacks leader.
    2. Chuck Howley
    3. Leroy Jordan
    4. Ken Norton Jr
    5. Bob Bruenig
    6. Sean Lee & Hollywood short careers . Lee over Henderson.
Lockhart , Coakley , Nguyen the rest.
Tubbs didn't seem to stand out to me much. Just looking at the stats. But Stats lie sometimes. **Im not sure everyone was a Middle Linebacker SOOOOO. It is what it is.
    Haven't seen the video yet
I missed James I was asleep them years
If you eliminate the Lbs and stick with the MLB's looks like our lists are about the same 💪🤓💪 Logical enough for me

What's going on Steve. Yeah this is a inside/middle linebacker list only. Dexter, Howley, Ware, were all legends. I'll definitely have them in the top 5 *outside* linebackers in history in the upcoming weeks. Thanks Steve! How you been? Hope all is well.
