That was my favorite thing about the story. Everyone knows what’s going on now, but when it first came out, I assumed it was just a werewolf outbreak. Men were turning into beasts and we were supposed to hunt the beasts. You eventually start to see things that are bizarre and out of place in that theme and as you progress you realize that it’s not about beasts or werewolves at all but something much more horrifying and profound.
Jumped in blind (in terms of Lovecraft and Bram Stoker books) and just loved it because of how well it goes with FromSoft's game style than the epic medieval Gothic stuff from other Souls games. I'll disagree with the combat, Bloodborne is the PEAK of soulsborne controls. Super fluid trick weapons rather than clunkly weapon arts, lightning fast dodges and much more aggressive. Elden Ring is great for options and variety but it doesn't hold a candle to BB in combat. The only real issue BB has is 29fps :(
@@zaynthemane Because there's a frame timing problem with the game that makes it actually worse than your average 30fps title, believe it or not. It's why so many people want some kind of fps buff. Even unlocked 40ish would be a boon to gameplay.
@@Shlankyman545 for a game like Bloodborne game feel is a very important part of what makes it good or bad. A big part of the enjoyment comes from the fluid and frenetic combat. Low FPS can have a pretty severe impact on game feel, especially when you start dropping below 45 or 50
Bloodborne is a total reversal of thematic concepts and a reversal of the heroes journey. The ending is the best way to show the first part. The first ending where you wake up knowing nothing after gherman kills you is the good ending but also the worst as you have lost all the knowledge you gained in the hunt. The third ending is the bad ending but also the best as you have transcended your human vessel and became an old one. The second is the only ending that could be considered truly the worst ending as you are turned into a puppet for the moon presence in order to continue the hunt.
Ehh, I really miss the gimmick fights. I miss the days when the real bosses were bullshit AD&D style dungeons and bosses were usually more for flavor with a few of the "OMG THIS IS BALL-BUSTING" bosses sprinkled in.

One of the best things about Bloodborne is that it's genuinely up for debate which endings are "good" and "bad", or if that's even a valid way of judging them. Imagine the dreams of Bloodborne like The Matrix, and you have the choice between starting a war between humans and bots (Great Ones) where countless people will die, but if you win, you can live in the real world, which may be destroyed, but it's real. Or you can choose to go back to sleep and live in a dream world that as far as we can tell, is returned to normal. It's manufactured, but you and the rest of the world will never know, and even though the Great Ones still exist, they will leave you alone. And as Morpheus says, what is real? If your brain tells you it's real, then isn't it? There's a genuine argument that either of those endings could be the "good" ending.
The argument thats valid is that the true ending being you absorb the pieces and have that last piece then defeat the moon presence, its weird to me that when you beat the presence it states nightmare slain... when the doll picks up the chosen one she said "oh, good hunter" contextually meaning she knew this was the case of the reality the "dream" was. I feel there is supposed to be a sequal of some sort that will laminate the idealism of bloodborne due to the ending of the cutscene the sky was clearing up and the hunter walks away like nothing happened... towards the burning building? He was going towards stairs so what else was there to see... you also absorb more than 2 pieces of the chosen one so you would end up becoming one right?
I see why you wouldn't like elden ring if you don't like the gameplay. I love trying to piece together souls like stories but if you don't like the actual gameplay in between these chunks of lore then you don't have the glue to hold the experience together. I love not understanding exactly what's happening and trying to piece it together. It's very similar to games like kings field and lunacid actually
In true Lovecraft fashion, Bloodborne doesn't have a "good" ending. Once you've been touched by Cosmic Truth, there is no return. There is no peace. Your only options are: 1) Escape, but be marred forever by the trauma, and ultimately do nothing to improve things, because how could a single person stand against such godlike power? (awake from the dream) 2) Be overcome by madness, accept your role in the cosmos and become a tool or part of the greater machine, but maybe be able to help someone with your sacrifice. (replace Gherman at steward of the Hunter's Dream, free Gherman from his unending nightmare at the cost of your own sanity) 3) Overcome madness, transcend humanity, and gain some small scale of power and presence in the cosmos. You are more, but you've lost everything. (Slug ending) 4) Fail and expire. Perhaps the closest thing to a good ending? Your troubles are over in this life. Time to move on to something else. (stop playing the game) Lovecraft's universe is marked by the idea that humanity is to the elder gods as a single ant is to us. Even the idea of "communicating" with them is as absurd as the idea of ants communicating with humans. Even a hundred ants replicating a mathematical sequence via formations would only pique your interest. You might pay attention to them briefly, try to wonder at their strange behavior, but no real communication is accomplished.
Most of this stuff isn't really the plot of the game, it's more the history of the world. For the actual plot, you are sick from some unknown illness and seek blood treatment, and then wake up and find a note, in your own handwriting, saying to 'seek the pale blood'. The basic premise is that you're dumped into a confusing and terrifying world, and the lore only exists if you really want to figure out why things are they way they are, but your only goal is to survive and fine this mysterious 'pale blood', which itself is a bit vague. That's part of the appeal of these games. There are multiple levels of story, and even without any of the lore, it still essentially works. You don't really need to know exactly what is going on, no more than a character that is dropped into a horror or fantasy world needs to understand all of the logic behind it. All you really need to know is that you need to either keep moving forward or die. It's also a sort of realistic approach to storytelling. History tends to be a bit muddled and cobbled together. It's complicated. It doesn't simply fit into a clear, linear three-act structure, there are gaps in it, assumptions made, and probably even a few mistakes written down. Just like how nobody knows everything about the real world, and yet we still live within it, the same applies here. You're not omnipresent, and everything isn't easily laid out. In the game, like the real world, we're essentially dropped into it, and fundamentally need to figure things out on our own, whether we do that through educating ourselves, or simply experiencing life as it happens.
This is on point for Bloodborne, and I thought for a writer this would've been obvious. Sure as a gamer you'd expect to know the story from start to finish but thats why From Software were to able to distinguish themselves and for somebody who is intersted in stories and storytelling there isn't anyone better than From in the gaming sphere.
BB is widely regarded as one of the greatest games ever made. Its world design/art/sound design are unmatched. So good that i actually felt uneasy almost to the point of nausea during the entire playthrough.
Bloodborne's story is one of the most in depth, and in front of your face, stories among the Fromsoft titles. Even despite how hidden the lore still is, and thats saying something. Because almost everything we know of the story is true and not simple speculation. It's also one of the most darkest and mind boggling stories with its association with eldritch horrors and moral dilemmas. The philosophies and values that the story explores are very open ended as well, but I always liked the idea that Bloodborne explored the idea of the Paleblood being attuned with the Übermensch, where a human does not rely on faith or knowledge to live life, and as such one rises above humanity as they venture beyond the unknown.
I do not agree with the notes thing. A lot of lore is in the vusual, architechture and enemy design and such. Leaves you wondering, grasping and searching for the how and the why. This is a lot of the reason i love these games. Bloodborne in particular is very good at this show dont tell way of giving the lore. I feel like if everything is pushed into notes it often feels forced.
If you fight Ebrietas you see a baby Rom with their legs ripped apart and it’s like Rom meaning it’s a child of a great One that got his legged ripped by the healing church
Cosmic horror is my favourite type of horror It is like toothache. It hurts when I touch it with my tongue but I con't stop touching it. When I feel the fear of something eldritch, It feels somehow satisfying When I stare at the sky for long enough, I fear something as big or bigger than the sky may fall or appear.
The PvP combat in this is my personal favourite of soulsborne, it is fast, messy, frantic and it really immerses you into the world, like it really feels like Im fighting another formidable hunter whom has seen such horrors as I have. Backed by the games lore, every fight was a memorable one
Ive always seen the third ending as the best. Yes, you are now a squid. But its the most selfless as you sacrifice your humanity and accend, ending this nightmare once and for all. The second is definitely a close second, only if the hunt must continue. Germin has fulfilled his duty, and he finally gets to rest. The first is not good at all even if it seems like the most beautiful with the sun rising. The hunt continues, more blood is shed, and more people will go feral.
And remember this video came before Bloodborne's DLC, which is specifically about how those old scholars came about the "old blood" in the first place. It's THEIR nightmare about all their worst sins.
I'm currently playing bloodbourne for the first time staring a couple weeks ago. The game does not coddle you in the least both mechanically and from a narrative perspective, but aside from being legitimately horrified as I'm playing it, I have to admit that I think it's a masterpiece. Nothing really makes sense as you're playing it, but while looking up all the lore videos, it's mind boggling how intricate and detailed it all really is. Doesn't seem like anything is really out of place, and all that you encounter has a narrative purpose for it. This is teetering on spoiler territory, but I love how you can send people to the clinic or the ward, and they all interact in different ways depending on the choices you make with outcomes that don't affect the ending of the game at all, but it's literally just for worldbuilding and fun. Then one of the first bosses you fight, Father G, well he has his family that are there and you can interact with his kids and that tells a whole story with multiple different endings depending on what you do, but none of these are really spelled out, you have to pay attention and put the peices together from the environment and attention to detail
I've beat Elden Ring and Bloodborne three times each. Elden Ring was enjoyable enough, and I'm glad that FromSoft finally got the huge audience they deserved. I liked Bloodborne more, though. In fact, I loved it as much as I can love a game. Maybe I haven't dug deep enough into Elden Ring's lore, but Bloodborne's story and world were interwoven so exquisitely and it was a terrific experience. The "protagonist" feel is there, whereas the scope of Elden Ring's world and lore makes your existence seem random and barely significant.
If you don't like the way Fromsoftware tells its stories, you won't like bloodborne. It's even harder to follow than Elden Ring. The reason people like the story telling because you have to scour the game to actually get it. The fun is talking with other people online and bouncing ideas off eachother. Also, view items as notes. They're just wearable notes.
If you like longer texts of lore, you'd really appreciate Blasphemous. Good video btw! Bloodborne is one of the greatest games ever made. A true masterpiece. And the story/lore is really deep. I love it so much!
@@seeker_rodan3113 cool! They're definitely really good games! I was never thought I was into Metroidvania games, but then I picked up Blasphemous anyway and quickly started loving it.
@@seeker_rodan3113 yes, I've started picking that up as well! I have yet to continue however, due to the Elden Ring DLC being out, but I will get to it, lmao
The more simplified version of the story, people do experiments with old gods to get power. One of these guys is lonely and does a deal with a god to get a sentient sex doll...
Just saying, there’s about a million notes of lore absolutely littered around Elden ring. Idk why you thought those don’t exist in that game. They definitely do. It probably has the most of them in the series honestly.
I can understand your desire to know more, but Fromsoftware doesn't like to do that. The worlds and stories they build are in service to the games they create. They leave gaps and room for speculation purposefully. I think it helps to build the world and show just how far things have fallen from their peak. It also helps to make the world feel ancient, like vital information has been lost to time or tragedy.
@@TheManOf1ThousandFaces-bz7jc This dudes opinion on how you shouldn't have to learn lore and history through item descriptions made him a walking L to me.

I'm a little disappointed by this video ngl. As someone who's also a storyteller, also working getting published (being very close to it actually, as I have an editor), and as someone who absolutely LOVES Bloodborne as it's also the main inspiration for my story, there was just three strikes for me that convinced me not to keep watching past the 5 minute mark unfortunately. 1) You advertise yourself as a Fantasy Author, and the reason I clicked on this video, was to get an opinion from someone whom I expected would have more experience with the ins and out of storytelling. And while I empathize with the struggle to get published, learning that you're not actually published, and when you highlight map-making as something you consider significant enough to dedicate steams to... It just, idk man. Not what I was expecting. 2) You're watching Vaati's video, which is... subjective. Rather than consuming the source material directly, or giving us a breakdown on what you think of the story, and what you like about it, especially based on how it contrasts other horror fiction. It's just disappointing. Off the title, I expected an author who had played through Bloodborne and was going to talk about the story and what they thought was strong. Not a video of someone watching Vaati's video, which is the most entry-level stuff when it comes to Bloodborne. Plus your video appears to just boil down to you watching Vaati's video while nodding your head, and occasionally screeching about how creepy you find some of the monsters. Which isn't really giving much substance outside of what I could get from just watching Vaati's video myself. I"m not really getting to hear much of your opinions or thoughts, which is what I came for. 3) Barely 3 minutes in, and you didn't recognize the famous Lovecraft quote at all. To avoid this simply being criticism and hopefully turning it into something more constructive. If you find the Bloodborne lore to be intersting, then I suggest playing the game yourself and experiencing it for yourself, before diving any deeper into the lore. You're ruining it for yourself (in fact, watching Vaati's already spoiled for you, the twist that the story which initially presents itself as Gothic Horror story about hunting werewolves, is actuyaly Cosmic Horror and about Eldritch entities from the Dreamlands and their influence on the city of Yharnam - which is a really awesome twist when you experience it yourself for the first time in game - has been completely ruined for you). Play the game first, and though you'll undoubtedly be confused by the story initially, you can still appreciate what's there. Then take a deep dive into the lore, with channels like Aesir Aesthetics, Charred Thermos, and Smoughtown. Different people have different takes on what the story is actually about. And that range of ideas and opinions is great inspiration for aspiring storytellers such as you and I. Second, please read more fiction. Especially some of the contemporary classics. HP Lovecraft I think is basically mandatory reading for anyone wanting to do SF and Fantasy. You see his work carry as far as inspiring even the likes of GRRM, As is Dune, of course. Even the likes of Mary Shelley and such. As an author, I think not being able to recognize one of the most prolific quotes in Horror is a bad look. This point and the last boil moreso into, pay close attention to stories, as they're a fantastic source of inspiration. No 3, and this is moreso advice as a fellow author. And perhaps a bit unsolicited and off the mark since I'm not exactly sure what your writing habits are like. But since you mentioned that you livestream drawing maps. I personally think, that's a waste of time. Stories are primarily about characters. You can even see this in the lore video you just watched. The story is about the consequences of the tragic actions of the characters that set everything in motion. The Souls Games, by and large, don't really have maps (barring ER). Even DaS, the map is moreso functional, but we don't exactly know much of the relationship between Anor Londo and some of the areas or countries around it. Depth trumps breath when it comes to setting, and I think your time would be better suited writing short stories focused on drama and character, rather than drawing fantasy maps. Even if you are aspiring to be a fantasy author. As you can see, Fantasy exchanges well with Horror and Dark Fantasy. So perhaps try expanding your genre a little if you're having a hard time finding luck. Even though you might think you prefer Fantasy, you might discover you have more talent in other genres. I can speak from experience there. Also, one of the problems with fantasy fiction is that the genre is too saturated with generic stuff about elves and fictional maps and stuff, but what people really latch onto are the personal trials of characters, and the challenges they must try to overcome. It's part of why people think Bloodborne has the best story of the Souls games. Horror lends itself really well to personal drama, as one of the core themes of Gothic Horror is the struggle between the monster and man. Both the monster within man, as much as the monster outside. So perhaps broadening your scope toward genres that are more conductive to personal drama, can help you find more success in your aspirations. Even if you ultimately do go back to writing fantasy, having experience in other genres can help foster skills necessary to help make your storytelling more interesting for readers. In the words of George Lucas, regarding Star Wars: "It's basically a soap opera set in space." And in just the same vein, Game of Thrones and Dune, are much the same, being a retelling of the Wars of the Roses but set in fantastical or science fiction settings. People care about drama, not maps.

Basically its goal is to traumatize people into being able to function. But for a lot of us, that trauma didnt make us able to function, it made it harder. And the feeling of helplessness from being in a world like that is rivaled by very few things, a infinite eldritch nightmare being on of them
I'll disagree with the combat, Bloodborne is the PEAK of soulsborne controls. Super fluid trick weapons rather than clunkly weapon arts, lightning fast dodges and much more aggressive. Elden Ring is great for options and variety but it doesn't hold a candle to BB in combat. The only real issue BB has is 29fps :(
Why did you specify it to 29 instead of 30 😂
@@zaynthemane Because there's a frame timing problem with the game that makes it actually worse than your average 30fps title, believe it or not. It's why so many people want some kind of fps buff. Even unlocked 40ish would be a boon to gameplay.
@@Sharky1986 ah, makes sense
Frames are the least important part of a good video game.
Ay yo don't be throwin shade at the MP, dawg. Praise the Moon.

How do you feel about Madara's Infinite Tsukuyomi plan? It's from Naruto Shippuden if you're not aware.
I am becoming the Matrix and have a Doll friend :3
@@Xeno_Solarus MAdara is a fucking idiot, who wants to take a relatively normal world and forcefully put everyone into a fake one.
I sure do love Cosmic Horrors beyond Human Comprehension :D
Mother of fingers in elden ring, such a good one
I see why you wouldn't like elden ring if you don't like the gameplay. I love trying to piece together souls like stories but if you don't like the actual gameplay in between these chunks of lore then you don't have the glue to hold the experience together. I love not understanding exactly what's happening and trying to piece it together. It's very similar to games like kings field and lunacid actually
King's Field happens to also be made by Fromsoft. It even has the Moonlight Great Sword's origins.
So, about the spiders. It gets worse
We could call them the friars too and hed have no clue how horrid they really are
>five times unpublished fantasy author
>"historian" with only a degree in history
Yep. I laudably went Uh-Oh, as soon as he said that after clicking this video.
In true Lovecraft fashion, Bloodborne doesn't have a "good" ending.
Once you've been touched by Cosmic Truth, there is no return. There is no peace.
Your only options are:
1) Escape, but be marred forever by the trauma, and ultimately do nothing to improve things, because how could a single person stand against such godlike power? (awake from the dream)
2) Be overcome by madness, accept your role in the cosmos and become a tool or part of the greater machine, but maybe be able to help someone with your sacrifice. (replace Gherman at steward of the Hunter's Dream, free Gherman from his unending nightmare at the cost of your own sanity)
3) Overcome madness, transcend humanity, and gain some small scale of power and presence in the cosmos. You are more, but you've lost everything. (Slug ending)
4) Fail and expire. Perhaps the closest thing to a good ending? Your troubles are over in this life. Time to move on to something else. (stop playing the game)
Lovecraft's universe is marked by the idea that humanity is to the elder gods as a single ant is to us.
The trick weapons are a thing of beauty when you master one. You feel as if your an anime character
If you fight Ebrietas you see a baby Rom with their legs ripped apart and it’s like Rom meaning it’s a child of a great One that got his legged ripped by the healing church
Cosmic horror is my favourite type of horror
It is like toothache. It hurts when I touch it with my tongue but I con't stop touching it.
When I feel the fear of something eldritch, It feels somehow satisfying
When I stare at the sky for long enough, I fear something as big or bigger than the sky may fall or appear.
The dlc added a lot of context and this video is a little older but still works for the main story
Yellowbat made a great video on Bloodborn and womanhood
Bro said the worst boss fight was awesome he doesn’t even know the horror
I mean.... there's no chance you look at the real world and think love is stronger than fear. That's some super copium right there.
You forget Ryan, this is a souls game, there are no "good endings"
If you don't like the way Fromsoftware tells its stories, you won't like bloodborne. It's even harder to follow than Elden Ring. The reason people like the story telling because you have to scour the game to actually get it. The fun is talking with other people online and bouncing ideas off eachother.
Also, view items as notes. They're just wearable notes.
If you like longer texts of lore, you'd really appreciate Blasphemous.

There is no good ending for bloodborne
