  • Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.
The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.
With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon."

Being an American boy in the late 40's,50's,60's and growing up in Ontario Canada I had been exposed to more news from England and the Monarchy than had I done so in America. Early on I must say I liked the Queen from the start when she became Queen in '53. She carried herself well and sustained the dignity of a queen. She will be missed.

I wonder if anyone had an inkling of how long it would be before the lyrics would go back to God Save the King! In any case, you're right, QEII acquitted herself admirably well and will be missed and remembered for all time.

Even if I had no clue of what was happening , this tribute spoke to me , and spoke to all of us , and immediately I understood the gravity and the tragedy that had just happened . As a child of the 21st century, my grandmother loved the Queen, talking and explaining passionately about everything British, and her experience as a subject of the Empire. Hearing this announcement would have broken her heart.
The Queen so strongly symbolizes ever-presence, that it manifested into a meme. For most people, a world without her is unimaginable, yet as of today it is reality. It feels like both nothing has changed and everything has changed at the same time.
As God Save the Queen plays officially for the last time, with the Queen's portrait slowly zooming in, the sinking feeling that a symbol of stability to 3 generations is no longer with us truly cuts deep. What's worse is I feel the deeper implications still have not really sunken in for me.
God Save the Queen. With great love and sadness, from Sarawak.

That's not what I'm here to say. I only knew one Queen. The same that my Grandfather watched become Queen. He watched his house bombed during WW2 before she took the rein. I just spoke with him in his 84th year about this loss. It was full of memories and passion. I have watched her since 1994, every Christmas address and so forth. She stood strong against many evils we are still currently struggling with. I will always remember her compassion and love for our homeland. I will remember the impact of these actions and pass them on. I just hope the teachings of this marvelous woman are not forgotten. God save the King.

From an American. Despite our sometimes massive differences, I want to set aside any vitriol I may have placed against the British/UK at any point in the fog of times past, to espouse my sincerest condolences for this loss. We have been at odds, we have been the truest of allies, we have been both to war together and to war against one another, and we have stood strong against our shared enemies. Though through it all, we are inextricably bound and united in the brotherhood of a shared origin. And I understand that we live, we die, and we enact action in between. But this death struck a chord with me, surprisingly so. I fully believe she may well have been one of the most important women in history, if not the most, and I want to join you (the British people/UK) in heartfelt mourning for the loss of a titan of history, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Mary the II.

The queen to many people from north, east, south and west. Loved dearly all around the world, not because she was the queen but of her character, like a faceted diamond that shone from every angle.

When I heard about this I was too shocked to even cry or have any emotions. She was too prominent in history and the people of our world. Thank you for everything, Queen Elizabeth.

I am from Poland. The news of the Queen's death broke me down. She was always with us, an elegant, wise woman. There was always a chapter about her in every book from English, in every school class in my life. My thoughts are with you-British people.

From 🇮🇪 IRELAND, I wish to extend my sincerest condolences and sympathy to all members of the Royal Family and to the 🇬🇧 British people at this sad time on the recent passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Despite turbulent past histories, Irish people held Queen Elizabeth with deep affectionate regard and respect. King Charles will be a wonderful Monarch and our best wishes for a long and happy reign are sent from your neighbors and IRISH friends today from across the pond.
