I have been teasing this series for a very long time...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a twenty episode retrospective on every Sega developed arcade racing game in 3D! Because whether its retro gaming or modern pc gaming...Sega is the KING of the arcade racing genre! So buckle up and get ready for a retrogaming ride!
THE RULES FOR INCLUSION: 1) It must have had an arcade release (So no Sega GT) 2) It must be in 3D (Bye Bye Outrunners, etc etc) and 3) you MUST be racing against an opponent and not just a timer (sorry Crazy Taxi, Wild Riders)
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,
tobemorecrazy, Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holder Schmidt, Tim Lehner, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj, Dorfus the Maple Syrup Man, John Booty and Craig M!
Up next: Daytona USA 2! This is the absolutely perfect sequel to the original Daytona USA on the Sega Model 2. Model 3 arcade hardware was infintely more powerful than its predecessor and Sega and AM2 pulled out all the stops to make Daytona 2 an all around bigger and more visually impressive arcade racing game. Sadly it's remained unported and the Dreamcast port that was announced was cancelled. Retrogaming is just disappointing like that sometimes!
But Daytona USA 2 is one of the most perfect retro games you can play if you are even remotely into racing games. It's basically tied with Scud Race and OutRun 2 for "best arcade game of all time"

Fun fact- this was actually listed as a “Squeakuel” at the time, and nobody understood until years later when the second Alvin and the Chipmunks movie came out. Truly Sega was ahead of their time.

They probably made Power Edition look more similar to the original to attract people to the cabs; nostaliga for the first game was/is extremely strong in arcades.

Unfortunately, lots of their arcade hit games include officially licenced material, like the cars in Scud Race, Sega Rally or Outrun 2, the planes in After Burner Climax, Jurrassic Park, Star Wars and so on, or even the Daytona race track. Re-releasing these games would require paying lots of money to get the licences rights, or to modify the game codes to erase them.

    • @VideoGameEsoterica

Licensing is always hard but I feel like with Scud Race and Daytona it wouldn’t be the heaviest of lifts to get it done

I totally agree - Sega were the absolute kings of the arcade racer genre back in the day. I was so gutted that this game (and Scud Race) didn't get ported to the Dreamcast back then. FYI, I believe the difficulty of the AI opponents was toned down a smidge between BOE and Power Edition. You should check out the secret Hornet in BOE with the unlock code - it's like the Shin Akuma of Daytona cars. It makes getting first place on the Expert Stage easy peasy.

SEGA arcade racing games are phenomenal. They are so charming, with the color graphics, cheesy music and sound effects/over the top voice acting. The sense of speed is great too. The presentation for these games are unmatched. Hell even the arcade racing games SEGA made for home consoles are fantastic too, most of them anyways. F Zero GX is my favorite racing game ever and SEGA made it, and even some Daytona USA developers worked on GX too. SEGA used to be so damn cool.

Sega, for the love of God bring this to modern consoles! When they re-released Daytona on Xbox 360 I played it none-stop. The same with Outrun 2. Like you mention in your video, they are just fun to play, but they also strike that brilliant balance between easy to get into and have fun, but trickier to master. No more Sonic re-releases. All of outrun series, Daytona, Scud Race and then something a bit more obscure.

I always have fond memories seeing the machine in its twin cabinet form at CineStar in Dortmund in my mid-teens in the mid-2000s, alongside the deluxe version of Ferrari F355 Challenge. CineStar is a movie theater located near the central station in Dortmund and has gotten rid of both machines ever since, but I always remember that they were there and I did play them, especially the PS2 port of F355 Challenge that I got to play after I just got my PS2 in Christmas of 2005. If I remember correctly, due to my incredible curiosity surrounding the game, this was the one game that got me into MAME in the first place when I wanted to play the game at home on my PC so badly, only for emulation of the game at the time being non-existent. And even still to this day, Model 3 emulation on MAME is still non-existent, but that's why the Supermodel emulator, as we know it, came about that I had known around the same time I had just gotten into MAME when the emulator was newly announced when I browsed through the System-16 website.

Glad you covered this one. My mate bought this cab a few years ago; original Daytona USA 2 and it's a single cab that used to be a twin-cab (1 player side) complete with the light-up sign, but no space for it to go on top. Great game and the force feedback on the steering wheel might be better than the original Daytona. If feels like there is more technology going on. The seat doesn't have force feedback. It's all with the big CRT screen so it's a similar resolution to Dreamcast, but of course a beefed up Model 3 Spec. It also has mirror mode on all courses and you can choose to beat your own lap times. I remember playing it in London in the early 2000's and who knows could be the same cab as it's got Namco written on it and we did go to Namco Station Waterloo back then.

Daytona USA 2 is my favorite arcade racer of all time, and it's such a ridiculous shame that it didn't come home to the DC (or other console later). I'm also partial to the original release, but had access to a Power Edition cab much longer and played it more (sadly, I never got to play this against friends or family...the mall had a twin cab, but I only played it solo or vs strangers). Now, I try to refrain from "best", "number 1", etc comparisons of games because judging art, music, gameplay, story, etc merits end up being completely subjective (even though some seem to think otherwise at times) and straight-up techinical merits like frame-rate, polygon or sprite counts, resolution, raw sound quality etc just isn't always the most important thing in gaming (even though I like such comparisons but that's the tech enthusiast in me). No, I like the way you judge many games, including here with Daytona 2 (and the mention of Cruisn' USA and it's N64 port)...it's how I rank games: by how much pure, raw fun I have with them. And in terms of sheer fun in a racing game, *for me* it's hard to beat Daytona USA 2. It's not leaps and bounds in terms of fun for me over the next 4 in my top-5 favorite racing games...but it's so, so fun that it just ekes its way to the top of my list though, again the other 4 do come very close.
And, since I can't leave you hanging, here's, not just my top-5 but top-10 favorite racing games (selected by how much raw fun I have with them): 1. Daytona USA 2 ('nuff said); 2. Cruis'n World (arcade, but, IMO, this was the best of the Cruis'n ports to the N64...Cruis'n USA was my first N64 game alongside Tetrisphere though); 3. Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed (PC version, not PSX...even 800x600 at 16-bit color was kind of pushing it for my TNT2, but still this game looked great and plays so well...absolutely my favorite in the NFS series in terms of fun); 4. Mario Kart 64 (my favorite in the series, and just so much fun...played so many hours of it...including playing it for half a day with my sister and BIL in person over thanksgiving...I can go back anytime...I like all of the games in the series, but none nearly as much as MK64...Super Circuit it my 2nd favorite and it's a distant 2nd); 5. Outrun 2 and Coast-to-Coast(just so much raw fun all around); 6. San Fransisco Rush (arcade version rules here...insanely fun; home ports not quite up to snuff, but I liked the N64 version); 7. Virtua Racing (I know not everyone loves how it handles, but I do love how VR feels...at least on model1/Genesis/32X/Switch...not a huge fan of TWI's Saturn port, and I like how the PS2 version looks but not so much how it feels...so many hours of playing this with my sister...I'm also glad to have got to play Virtua Formula too); 8. Hot Chase (whew...my favorite super scalar-ish game, and it's not even from Sega...Konami did such a good job with the sense of speed and urgency in this game...played it every chance I got at the theater) 9. Excite Truck (just pure, raw fun); 10. Super Off Road (fun by yourself; fun with friends; the arcade version is great and the Genesis and SNES ports are not terrible...it was like R.C. Pro-Am meets Atari's Super Sprint, both games I loved).
(...okay, normally the original Daytona as well as Sega Rally would probably actually get a spot on this "raw fun" list, but I really wanted to include some other developers besides Sega...).

Playing Daytona 2 on a 77" LG OLED with a Direct Drive FFB wheel and H-Pattern shifter is an experience on par if not better than the real arcade cab. And while it's not my absolute favorite arcade racer(OutRun 2, Scud Race, Rave Racer, and WMMT6 are slightly higher for me), it's certainly in my top 5.
