I have been teasing this series for a very long time...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a twenty episode retrospective on every Sega developed arcade racing game in 3D! Because whether its retro gaming or modern pc gaming...Sega is the KING of the arcade racing genre! So buckle up and get ready for a retrogaming ride!
THE RULES FOR INCLUSION: 1) It must have had an arcade release (So no Sega GT) 2) It must be in 3D (Bye Bye Outrunners, etc etc) and 3) you MUST be racing against an opponent and not just a timer (sorry Crazy Taxi, Wild Riders)
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,

Up Next: F-Zero AX! Wait...what? Sega developed an arcade racing game for Nintendo on GameCube hardware? Isn't this a console game? Well...NO. F-Zero AX released in arcades on the TriForce hardware, which was a partnership between Nintendo, Namco and Sega which used the GameCube hardware for arcade cabinets! Nintendo then took the 3D arcade racing game Sega made in F-Zero AX...and released F-Zero GX for the video game console market. BUT...the full arcade version of F-Zero AX is hidden in the code for the GameCube release! How weird is that? Retro games get confusing! But whatever the story F-Zero AX is an absolutely blistering fast and fun 3D arcade racing game you can play today!
It's like Daytona USA or Scud Race...in the future!
This runs on the TriForce arcade hardware...which is really just a GameCube with a Dreamcast GD-Rom drive.

I’m Certainly lucky to own an Original Japanese Deluxe motion arcade machine currently! I mean it took me years to find it and was not cheap omg. 😅 incredible game tho
Haha nice acquisition. Def a rare cab
If I ever hit it big, I want to buy the F-Zero Monster Ride cabinet
Haha gotta just hit it big first
My favorite console game of all time! I was in disbelief when I found out about the arcade version. I still have never seen the arcade machine in the wild. If Nintendo ever makes a new fzero, Sega NEEDS to be involved.
Its a RARE arcade cabinet. Not many out there any longer
They have one at Galloping Ghost in Chicago if that's any use
It is as I live close. Last time I was there it wasn’t operational. Sounds like they’ve fixed that
F-Zero GX is one of the best, and also most challenging racing games of all time. It still looks beautiful and feels fast as ever.
It’s aged well in almost all departments
Hey there! Always glad to see you covering cool and obscure arcade games, but I do have to mention that F-Zero AX on the Gamecube through an F-Zero GX code...is simply playing F-Zero GX with the AX menus, tracks and timer. Now that might sound about right, but F-Zero AX in arcades actually has quite a few different things regarding controls and physics in the real Triforce/Arcade version, which can be summed up as how the controls are like F-Zero X (paddles for side brakes are also for side attacks), feels more slippery, and drifting makes you gain speed.
It is a very, *very* old misconception that AX in GX is the same as the real AX in arcade due to how they DO look like the same game at a first glance and GX contains the content of AX (there's still missing details with the code like the announcer calling out the tracks in the course preview, 2D images are used instead of 3D models in the character select screen, ghosts are different, and AX-exclusive tech like the insanity that is T-Drift does NOT work in GX, not even with the AX code), but thankfully there has been a recent advancement through updated builds of the Dolphin Triforce branch to play F-Zero AX. I'd say that even if you don't really know about the game's tech, it will still be noticeable how different it controls in that it is way more slippery but losing grip and drifting, once again, makes you gain speed rather than losing it (reminds me of Scud Race/SEGA Super GT).
I did recently finish a guide on how to set that up, so if you are curious to try the real deal then I hope you enjoy it!
I mean it’s a mixed bag but it’s easy for people to experience and it’s comprised of AX resources.
Im glad to see Dolphin progressing for more Triforce stuff
Such a stellar game. I still love to play AX and GX to this day.
It really never gets old
Another awesome video man! I too, am not the biggest fan of the F-Zero Franchise, but I love this particular game to bits! Played it on the original GC way back in the day with that crappy steering wheel, but now, thankfully it can be played on PC via Dolphin. I play GX via Dolphin with a good strong Direct Drive FFB wheel on an OLED screen and the experience is better than than the arcade cab lol. There is also an old version of Dolphin that allows you to play F-Zero GX in VR!!!! It's crazy!
I am just glad people didn't get too spicy when I said I wasn't a huge F Zero fan outside of this game
I still think that gaming reached its peak around the time this game was released.
It was a great generation for sure
Even though I had GX on the Gamecube before, I did play AX once and I loved it.
The cab is awesome
I’m going to play this actual game at an arcade this weekend.
Nice. Where at?
Yo! You're in Chicago right? You've gotta make a stop out to Galloping Ghost in Brookville.
They've got an AX machine in, it's in alright shape and the seat motion platform is an absolute hoot.
I'm in full agreeance with you on your opinion. GX is the only game in the series that really shines, it's an absolute mechanical masterpiece and if the series is truly dead I'm glad it went out on such a strong note.
Yep I am like 45 minutes away from Galloping Ghost as I sit here editing more Unported episodes lol
I played AX at Galloping Ghost a handful of years back. The world champion at Flicky (Sega, 1984) plays at that arcade too. Her name is Danielle and she's amazing at that game. We both play (past tense for me) Flicky competitively so hung out once.
There is a game I haven’t played in forever
The AX version in GX is not exactly the same as the arcade version. The physics in the arcade version are a bit more forgiving. There are other differences as well. If you have a modded Wii I recommend downloading the Triforce games on it. Maybe something for a future video? Playing Mario Kart arcade GP at home is mad fun!
I did GP a while back. I thought about showing the Triforce version but this was more fun of a topic for the series imo :!
I remember having to mod my Wii to play it
So many good Wii mods out there
That's correct VGE. In fact, i was on launch date at a arcade in the State of New Jersey on line waiting my turn to play F-Zero AX. What a moment in history to see Sega and Nintendo working together for sure. 8^)
Anthony...
It was a weird moment. Two rivals…making a game together. Still feels wrong lol
Getting GX on Gamecube blew my mind, it looks better than a lot of 360/PS3 games and it's still super fun to play.
When GameCube looked good…it looked good!
My GameCube has dispensed cards for years, but they’re generally of famous dead Victorian poets. Also it floats sometimes and sings big band tunes from the 50s when we aren’t in the room.
Haunted GameCube. Def must increase the value
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah it’s the Henshin Tigers one so I can’t get rid of it
@@dorfus Oh the Henshin Tigers model? Does it haunt you with KFC
@@cptwigglefuffle Only once a year, in late December.
Ahh Japanese baseball
PowerPC gaming FTW
The best processor for your gaming needs. PowerPC might be considered to be “Mac” related but it’s the silicon of choice for so much of gaming history
A real "Bulldog" move to put a PPC chip in a game system.
😂
Can you please put a note somewhere that AX is not inside of GX. It's false and as someone who has restored these units has made finding information about AX an actual nightmare.
The AX that exists in GX's code isn't actually AX it's just GX with the AX menus and the timer function.
F-zero AX has stuff that's completely unique to it.
If you ever need advice on AX I have made and own 2 reburb'd Triforce AX units happy to answer any questions about it.
I have some videos of my units on my channel for proof and such
Yes I mention in the video it’s just a fun way to access AX features but it’s not the full cab experience. It’s just a fun way to talk about the oddity that is this game
I was gonna say, I haven't played this but I've had GX since 2003... But thanks to this video I now know I have AX as well!
haha happy to help!
wow had no idea this was from Sega, really loved this on GC!
Yep. Fully Sega developed
@@VideoGameEsoterica Also, love this series, always top content from you, much appreciated!
Glad you are enjoying it :)
Oh boy, now you are speaking my language (you always do anyway)! F-Zero AX/GX is my *all time* favorite racing game. Nothing else even comes close. I remember beating all the cups and the story mode on the hardest difficulty settings within only 5 days of the game's release. I rarely go more than a couple weeks without booting this game up on my GCN.
haha clearly you aren't a fan of F Zero or anything
You should have unlocked AX legitimately right?
@@mattsephton Yup, beating the other cups on master unlocks the AX courses, and beating each chapter in the story mode on the hardest setting unlocks an AX racer/machine. I was absolutely determined to beat that game when it launched. And I loved every moment of it!
Def more work than I would put in lol
I think my 3 fav racing games are F-Zero GX, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, and GTR2.
I haven’t played Motorstorm in forever. I probably should
@@VideoGameEsoterica Pacific Rift is by far the best in the series. Hood cam is amazing.
I’ll look into playing them again
I played AX on the Gamecube via Swiss/GC Loader, works great but if you can sweat to unlock everything then that's great too. I think F-Zero X on N64 is where I'm happiest, it's just the Gamecube F-Zero is just so darn hard and too fast, but could be you gotta git-good! The soundtrack on F-Zero X is also fire too, the guitar riffs really amp you up!
See the N64 F Zero is the one I don't like. Never clicked with it. What makes that your fav?
@@VideoGameEsoterica I think it comes down to being a big upgrade from F-Zero on the SNES. I love the SNES version, but the N64 version ups the ante. I think the N64 controls are probably a little obtuse and this could be why you don't like it? You could also say that the Gamecube version took the N64 version and upped the ante more, but at the end of the day they're all good but they are years apart from each other too. I hope they make a new F-Zero game that is more balanced for Switch. After all the yearly Mariokart games they made, they need to at least give it a try.
You’d think by now Nintendo would revisit F Zero!
@@VideoGameEsoterica While X isn't my personal favorite, it was an impressive show piece on the N64 at the time. Being one of the only 3D N64 games to actually run at a buttery smooth 60fps, it played like a dream. Sure the visuals were really bare bones, but man it still looked impressive at the time. A shame that the version on Switch doesn't run as well as it did on real N64 hardware.
That’s true. The frame rate was legit
Thanks for posting
Happy to do it
There was also a Super Famicom port of Puyo Puyo 2
That is true
Bout to start catching up on some of your vids, and I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE F Zero GX/AX.
I wish Nintendo would revisit this series in earnest. Is a modern, HD F Zero game with nice shaders and maybe a Samus cameo REALLY that hard a sell? Maybe if the next Nintendo system does VR they'll do something with it, though after the virtual boy that's a long shot lmao
Even if they just licensed it out to Raw Thrills to do a modern arcade game of it, I mean sheesh
It’s odd Nintendo hasn’t done anything with it in forever
Its an amazing game.
Do you know that we can play TriForce games on a Wii using Nintendont?
Yes most work. Which is great since the Triforce is VERY close to a stock GameCube
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeh man that is great. I recently bought an used Wii mainly to play GameCube games and thankfully i descover that can play TriForce games on it too, very cool stuff
Its an awesome mod that gives us some extra games which is always a good thing
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeh, its really great to a Wii nowadays, ifit didnt had those possibilitys i never picked up a Wii.
Thankfully those mods allow us to get access to those games. Good stuff :)
Fastest racing game I ever played. I always want to smack people who recommend me Wipeout when I bring up F-Zero. It's not even close!
I'll probably never unlock the AX courses on GX though. That story mode is one of the hardest things I've ever played.
The story mode is wildly hard. Like maybe one of the hardest things to accomplish in a racing game
1:02 the actual arcade and the GameCube ax physics are different.
Love Fzero GX sega did nintendo fans proud and the best game in the series made by the yakuza game developer.
if only Nintendo, as a favor, would let Sega put AX in a Yakuza game. That would really be something
@@VideoGameEsoterica that would be something
Never gonna happen sadly
The hex edit version technically isn't the triforce version tho, it's not exactly the same
To play the true version of AX you'd have to run the triforce iso via Nintendont on a modded Wii or Wii U.
I've played AX on real arcade hardware 3 years ago at Mikado Game Center in Japan. And then I played it recently again at Anime NYC.
Daytona is my favorite Sega Racer but I think that F-Zero GX/AX is the greatest racing game of all time. Also one of the toughest games ever especially with the story mode being so brutal and the Grand Prix being no slouch
Good video as always
Yes but that makes for a less fun video compared to showing people the weirdness that is AX in GX
I'm more of a Wipeout guy, but I like F-Zero too
Both awesome franchises
My favorite Nintendo racing game ever (well GX anyway, only ever seen AX once in my life). I've always found it amusing that Nintendo's best racing game was made by Sega. Shame this Sega doesn't exist anymore.
Nintendo knows that if you want the best arcade racing game possible…you get Sega to make it
didn't know you could unlock the arcade AX version on GC.
How do you do that, with a Gamegenie or Gameshark type adapter ,with a modified iso or with a button combination in the option menu?
Also there's a tri-froce emulator on pc to play this and the Mario Kart GP1 and GP2 that is pretty good.
Finally I wish Nintendo would make a new F-Zero for the Switch with online play
There is a modified iso you can use, and you can also use hex editing devices like on a real GameCube back in the day
AWW YEAAAA the best F-Zero, so brutal fastest game ever
if the low energy alarm isn't beeping, you're not using enough boost!
haha I do hate low energy alarms though
Has anyone been able to get this game running with system link? Would be cool to link up two or more gamecube like double dash with the broadband adapters.
Good question
I always felt that F Zero AX/GX are just the N64's F Zero X but with the difficulty dialed up, and with the looks that X deserved but the N64 couldn't deliver. Very similar games otherwise
Yes they do share some similarities
Sega made GX, on GameCube, too.
They did
It's time for Nintendo to make a new F Zero game or maybe remaster this game
It’s time for Nintendo to do SOMETHING with F Zero vs just letting it sit dormant
Waitwaitwait. F-Zero AX's content shipped on the F-Zero GX GameCube disk? Did Sega develop on F-Zero GX? How much of the content on the GX disk is unused without the codes, is it just "leftover" data like specific race tracks or does AX play differently than GX (ie different vehicle physics etc)? I'm so floored by this revelation.
Bit of a mixed bag. AX is inside GX and can be unlocked, including diff courses you can't get in GX unless you beat the entire game on the hardest difficulty. Also has card reader code...so its all of AX, in GX
@@VideoGameEsoterica This is incorrect.
AX is not inside of GX, just the left over menus and timers.
Also the card reader data isn't in GX. At all. There codes try to mimic them but don't do it properly. Actual AX cards function much differently to the emulated attempt, they have much more limited parts and can only be linked to the pilots introduced in from F-zero X.
AX has tons of Beta versions of GX courses and includes the GX course roster. I have a video on Beta Mute City Twist Road on my channel on my unit.
GX has all of the ax courses and they can be played however when played on GX (without the codes) they play the same as the other courses without timer and checkpoints.
Well yes obv the card reader functionality isn’t…well…functional lol
I am baffled to this day why nintendo abandoned F-Zero
It was a tech demo for them, and they were almost offended that people wanted more of it.
I am too to be totally honest
Nintendo and Sega have a lot in common. Mostly that they don't want to give fans what they want
I would LOVE to see a new Pilotwings, Waverace or Excitebike.
And what about a new 1st person Metroid? What the hell happened ?
Who knows. Maybe one day. Probably not though
I played WipeOut before I ever touched an F-Zero game and I think that ruined non-weapon based futuristic racers for me. I've tried F-Zero AX on the Nintendo Wii with the Nintendont modified version. It was fun and looked great but I always gravitate back to WipeOut.
I get that. Similar series, diff vibes
I know i'm the minority but i prefer X. It has better controls and music.
That's fair. Def the minority though! What makes you prefer that over this?
Like i said, the music and controls. F-Zero X had much better music (matter of taste) i never really liked the over distorted sound of GX's music.
Control wise, In F-Zero X you could perform a sudden "bump" by double tapping the shoulder buttons, to left or right. You could use that move to bump others out of the track or slam them into walls, but even better, bump yourself into tight corners without losing speed. And it felt great when you did it right. In GX, they removed the bumps and replaced them with a lame single button attack that didn't feel as good and could not be used for tighter cornering in the same way.
I could see that. Controls are definitely simplified in AX / GX
If you love this game, check out Fast Racing Neo on the Wii U or Fast RMX on the Switch 😎
I’ve heard of those but never played. I’ll check them out :)
F-Zero probably was innovative when it came out, but to be honest I find them average to above average until the SEGA developed AX/GX which is the only really good game in the series!
I tend to agree but I also love all things Sega arcade racing based...clearly hence the retrospective!
It makes me sad how far Sega has fallen in game development.
I mean they still make some great stuff
Wish nintendo let sega make a nrw one for the switch. 30 player online would be so 🤪
Sega made the best Nintendo racing game so they probably won’t let them do it again haha
F-Zero on the SNES was a real blast, I also enjoyed the N64 version even if it wasn't quite the 64-bit beast it was purported to be. After then I lost interest in F-Zero, I think because the PS2 had so many decent racing games of all types.
The PS2 really did have a ton of good racing games
@@VideoGameEsoterica and not just racing games, but pretty much any genre you can think off. While the Mega Drive will always be my favourite console, I think the PS2 was the perfect gaming machine
I enjoy all generations but if I had to pick one console I love more than all others from the 3D era it’s Dreamcast
@@VideoGameEsoterica In retrospect the Dreamcast was a great machine, but sadly unsupported and cancelled well before its prime. It's a what could have been rather than a what was. Which basically sums up Sega from the S/Mega-CD onwards. I appreciate the Dreamcast as Sega's swansong, but looking at that generation and beyond the PS2 just hit all of the boxes. Sony never hit that high note ever again, Microsoft just bumbles about, and Nintendo... well their best effort sold to mostly non-gamers. Crazy world.
It would have been great to see Dreamcast go to 2003-2004 and really stretch it’s legs
I never got into F-Zero it's a game I know has a pretty big fan base but it just never was my "cup of tea" as far as racing games go
That makes sense. It’s def “love it or don’t”
Love it but game is hard as hell 😈
It is def VERY hard at higher difficulties
