As a Chinese player, I am actually really intrigued by these four. Since they are the Treasures of Ruins, all of them have some sort of ominous meaning behind their designs. Wo-Chien is a slug covered in wooden tablets, ancient Chinese writing material before paper was introduced. Its origin connects deeply to a Chinese idiom: 罄竹难书 (qin zhu nan shu), describing people with so much sin that even using all the wood to make tablets wouldn't be enough to record all of their wrong doings. Chien-Pao has connections with warmongering or wars in general. It being a tiger like creature could be related to 虎符 (hu fu), a tiger shaped seal that symbolize military command and authority in the past. Plus sword is a common weapon for foot soldiers of ancient China. Ting-Lu seems like a combination of 2 similar Chinese idioms, 问鼎(wen ding) and 逐鹿(zhu lu). Dating back to the Warring States period (around 300 BC), both of these words means over ambition and hunger for power. Hence Ting-Lu is a combination of 鼎(ancient Chinese cauldron) and 鹿(moose). Chi-Yu is a combination of jade and fish, coincidentally both pronounced Yu in Chinese. Jade is a symbol of wealth in ancient times and often serve as gamble subject for rich investors. And its animal part being a gold fish, an species of ornamental fish that originated from china, widely used as decorations for wealthy households and noblities in the past. So these four represent tyranny, warfare, ambition and greed, very fitting for the symbols of ruination. But hey these are all just my guesses. :)
It's kinda funny how a game with so many glitches and performance issues simultaneously has so many little bits of attention to detail like that. There's clearly a lot of love and effort put into these games, there's just a good amount of wrinkles to iron out.
I like how you can see the destruction they brought in the past in the area around the seals. The area around Wo-Chien is a marshland, the plantlife only starting to recover from having its life drained all those years ago. The area around Chien-Pao seems like it was carved out, as if a mighty glacier was once there, or a series of avalanches. The area around Ting-Lu was full of harsh cliffs with a lake at the bottom, a great fissure in the earth. And the area around Chi-Yu had jagged spires of obsidian everywhere, despite no signs of volcanic activity.
Easily my favorite song to come out of scarlet and violet. I love how we’re basically re-releasing these evil creatures on the world to impress our hot history teacher.
Said teacher could also be secretly evil. She says you could be of use to her, implies she's not pure of heart, expresses interest in having these Pokémon for herself, and rewards you with a TM for Nasty Plot.
@@wikiuser92 her pokemon also point in the direction of something being not right with her, she leads with all zorark on illusion and use other supposedly not so nice and trustworthy pokemon in the academy tournament. By all means she should not be trusted, but again she is hot so it doesn't matter I just want to impress her
The beat drop after five seconds made my brain go: “I have made multiple wrong decisions removing those stakes and I should catch this thing immediately before it destroys Paldea.”
When I first encountered one of those stakes, even I stopped and wondered if it was a good idea to remove them, and I'm someone who pushes a big red button without hesitation
also also pokemon scarlet/violet: ik ur only around 12 years old, but ur going to need to open up these four pokemon who were sealed from causing irreversible damage to our land and capture them
i mean none of unova's legendaries are american in nature either. the tao trio speaks for itself, the genies were originally representative of the middle east but now with all 4 and their therian forms they're the japanese and chinese gods of the seasons/cardinal directions, and the musketeers should've been in kalos bc of the french origin.
I like how all of them are so different visually. The main similarities are corrupt items and the dark typing (Also abilities). They all feel so mysterious and dangerous.
Chien Pao is my personal favourite. It's pokedex description is incredible and terrifying at the same time and even it's design is great too, with it's broken sword-teeth and a face that feels like a Chinese Mafia boss kind of face
@@bingchilling7900 Particularly with legends of being composed from the sword containing the souls of everyone who died from its blade. Not to mention the mystery if the sword broke first or the Pokemon came into being before it broke.
I love that these four actually feel really dangerous. Between Ruination halving your health, their debuff abilities affecting your team as well, and the fact that they were each sealed away by 8 massive stakes that were spread aaaalll around the region, they really had a profound sense of individual strength to them. ALSO: I LOOOOVE their lore so much. The duality of *Ambition* seems to be a primary theme of Paldea and it’s used to great effect with how the greed of the old kingdom gave life to these Pokémon that are literally made of some of humanity’s worst qualities.
They also seem to have a lot of parallels and perhaps inversions to the Tapus from Gen 7: On being the inverse: -The Treasures are portrayed as destructive invaders from other lands while the Tapus are protectors who have existed at least since the islands were born. -The Abilities of the Treasures adversely affect everyone on the field except themselves, while the Abilities of the Tapus automatically set Terrains, which benefit everyone in a battle. For the parallels: -The Tapus and the Treasures are both quartets. -They all have the same base stat total of 570 - which, interestingly, all of the Paradox Pokemon except Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant have as well. -Their signature moves, Ruination and Nature's Madness, are different types but have the same effect - halving the target's remaining HP.
@@DrawciaGleam02 The Ultra Beasts come from other realities, if I understand them correctly. The Treasures just come from other countries or even continents.
@@truf6117 Exactly lmao. Stupid school rules. I don't see how some of the other students are allowed to wear costumes and such and attend there. Totally ticks me off. >.
I was actually thinking of naming it Yami after catching it. It’s too fitting. Not sure about the other 3, though. But if I go that route, they have to have nicknames that are just as thoughtful.
So, we are all in agreement that pretty much everything about the four Treasures of Ruin is amazing, right? Their whimsical yet intimidating theme music, their vastly differing designs, their incredibly unique names, their awesome-sounding, creative cries - all of these various elements actually have some much deeper meanings in relation to both the Pokémon world and our own. But a little, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it detail that I just so happened to take notice of during my own playthrough that I also found to be quite interesting was this : the brief text that describes their cries right before the battle begins. Wo-Chien : “Scriiiiibe!” - Before paper printing was invented, many various peoples of past societies would instead write by carving into TABLETS made of wood, clay, and/or stone. The people who did this as a profession were called ‘scribes.’ Chien-Pao : “Cuuuttt!” - Now, this one is pretty obvious, as one of the things that SWORDS have always been used for is…well, cutting. Ting-Lu : “Poouurr!” - This one is also fairly easy to guess the reasoning behind. You can pour liquids both into and out of a VESSEL. Chi-Yu : “Splashyyy!” - It’s a goldfish.
In French, the little text for Chi-Yu is something like "Adddd mi rrrrr" It basically saying you to admire its magatamas, kinda fitting considering it was born from greed and envy.
Anyone else concerned that Raifort sent us to release four ancient evil Pokemon, said that it was best for you to do it because you had a "pure heart" (implying she doesn't), and then gave us the TM for Nasty Plot?
"Objects that absorbed so much sin from humanity they became sentient creatures that destroyed an ancient kingdom" Has to be THE MOST metal description for the origin of a pokemon
I don't know. "I was burned to death in blazing inferno, but a powerful creature reforged me and my brothers into legendary beasts" was pretty metal too
@@InfiniteThePhantomJackal that's just what Leopards sound like, but yes. There are stock sounds that you can purchase the use rights for just like other assets.
I really love to see how the relic are a part of their body, or themselves for that matter. Chien-Pao was born from the sword, which is now his fangs. Wo-Chien came out of the wooden tablets, which now serve as its shell. Ting-Lu was originated from the vessel, which now is what resembles horns. Chi-Yu was birthed from the four beads that are now its eyes. Really love the sub-legendaries in this region, their designs are awesome and their battle theme is a banger to listen to.
@@Archimedes-v2oyou could argue the same for the Regis and magearna. While the relics are their true selves, like Magearna’s soul heart, their “bodies” are their own that their souls created. So yeah, they are legends I think
I love that you can go after these things before learning about them from the history teacher. Stumbling across the purple seal before going to the academy or having that one trainer near the Open Sky Titan mention a sealed "ruin us" Pokémon, without the extra knowledge, really gave them a sense of mystery. And then figuring out for myself that there were four based on colour coding, and collecting the stakes. This is genuinely the most fun I've ever had finding a legendary Pokémon.
u get a free legendary, but how to get the others is hard as hell compared to otherss in which u just battle and catch em with a master ball. only that there arent any master balls in scarlet and violet
The ruinous quartet is one of the best legendary teams we've gotten for a WHILE !!!! seeing these guys makes me feel how i felt seeing the tapus for the first time
Whats so good about them tbh? They're extremely ugly and their quest is way too simple with no nice cutscenes, atmosphere or presence. Song is a banger though.
@@sperryyoungerjr.3985 Tapus protect their islands specifically and these guys destroy regions, literally they're made to be enemies if they ever go to alola
Remember kids, don't abuse your power as royalty to become a tyrant, or else your toaster will turn into a wild boar and bring about a curse to your bloodline. Also don't litter. I think thats what they were trying to say with these.
@@supermitendo9654 It's because they aren't from the region in the first place. It's kinda like the deal with Cufant and Copperajah, being introduced in the UK inspired Galar region, but being essentially Indian Elephants.
@@supermitendo9654 perhaps this could be a nod to Spain at one point being occupied by the Mongols? Kind of a reach with way more specific history behind it that I really forgot since I learned it.
Sinnoh had Cresselia and Darkrai, pokemon based on dreams. Gen 5 then had the dream world mechanic. Unova had the French themed Swords of Justice, the next generation was based on France. Kalos had Hoopa, the dimensional portal pokemon, which fits the Ultra Wormholes of Alola. At least one of the Mythical or Legendary pokemon seem to relate to the next region.
i like how the colors of the shrines correspond to types that are strong against each treasure's type Wo-Chien's is purple because poison beats grass Chien-Pao's is orange because fire beats ice Ting-Lu's is green because grass beats ground Chi-Yu's is blue because water beats fire
Amusingly, the offensive ones among the four are each strong against two of theur siblings, while the defensive ones are each strong only against one sibling. What I mean is Chi Yu beats Chien Pao and Wo Chien, and Chien Pao beats Wo Chien and Ting Lu. Meanwhile, Wo Chien beats only Ting Lu and Ting Lu only beats Chi Yu. That said, Wo Chien's ability sort of cancels out Chien Pao's, and Ting Lu's cancels out Chi Yu's.
I love how menacing the opening of this song is. I first heard it when I encountered Chi-Yu, and it made it very evident that even though it's tiny and adorable looking, it's extremely dangerous. Then it transitions into this weirdly bouncy tune. It's emphasizes how foreign they are to the region but it's also weirdly... playful? Makes me wonder if this group is only dangerous because of the humans previously associated with them? That perhaps if you're a little better, you can call upon their power without causing future disasters? One should be careful though, for It's that exact kind of thought process that sows the seeds of future ruin.
A lot of Pokemon were more dangerous in the past because people couldn't control them the way they can now. Pokeballs have come a looooong way...if you ignore the implied Fridge Horror of Pokeballs subtly brainwashing Pokemon to some extent to be subservient to whoever catches them.
I love the little toy piano part that plays, it just fits the theme that these legendaries don’t even mean to cause ruin and as Chen-Pao’s dex entry says it likes to play in the snow caused by the avalanche it has created, showing a sense of innocence which I love.
@@thefunwashere6221 not really. To me it makes it even worse. It's not accidentally making the avalanches and obliviously dancing in the snow. It's intentionally killing people and dancing on their graves
That's not a toy piano. These Pokemon outright are made of hatred, spite, greed, etc. These Pokemon actually ARE evil, which is probably why their seals can only be broken by one with a deep bond with Pokemon who is pure of heart - The only kind of person who can tame the evil and pain that created these Pokemon, and show them there is more to life than suffering
I appreciate how different this group can be while all operating under the same design basis- the ruinous object, and a body formed out of a natural element around it.
Asides from the "Tunak Tunak" similitudes, this theme really express the feeling that these 4 are something out of ordinary and a completely different quartet from every past legendary groups, including the Tapus. They at least have a thing in common (their phisical appearance), but these 4... they're literally a big snail, a tiger-ferret, a deer with a giant bowl on his head and a FISH... and that's what it makes so strange but even more fascinating and unique from the others Also Ting-Lu is literally a colossus from Shadow of The Colossus so he's the best
They're based on the "Four Perils" of Chinese mythology, which is really cool because Legends Arceus finally introduced the final member of the "Four Symbols" with Enamorus (who is designed to be Genbu). So I actually expect the Treasures of Ruin to get Incarnate forms in the DLC or something, to match the Kami quartet.
@@KutsukiTsukiyo For the Incarnate Forms of the Four Treasures, i could see 3/4 of them being based on the Three Vengeful Spirits of Japan: Emperor Sutoku (for Ting-Lu), Sugawara no Michizane (for Wo-Chien) and Taira no Masakado (for Chien Pao). Dunno about Chi-Yu (maybe Takiyasha-hime the daughter of Taira no Masakado, the jealously Yokai/Goddess Hashi-hime or Lady Rokujo from Tales of Genji?) EDIT: On a second thought, the incarnate forms of these guys could be based on the Four Criminals (Gonggong, Huantou, Gun and Sanmiao/Chiyou)
Although people like to call them the dark type tapus it would be better to call them the opposites of the genies in their Therian forme which represents the 4 mythical beasts of Chinese mythology while the ruinous quartet represents the four perils of Chinese mythology
Technically the Therian Forms are more align with Chinese mythology than Japanese Mythology they both come from the same source. The “Four Gods” “Auspicious Beasts” and etc are from Chinese Mythology (Azure Dragon, Tiger of the west, Vermilion bird, Black tortoise)
@@lienhua5558 yeah I got confused with their incarnate forms which is based on Japanese Shinto god's since they represent Fūjin, Raijin, Inari, and Ugajin Edit: another reason I probably got confused and said they were from Japan mythology was because I was more familiar with their Japanese names then the Chinese ones
It might be a bit of a stretch, but I also like the locations where these guys were imprisoned. Chi-Yu, a fire type, was located up on the mountains, surrounded by waterfalls Chien-Pao, an ice type, was located in the south of the region, a hot area without any snow Ting-Lu, a ground type, was located in an area with deep rooted trees far from the main land Wo-chien, a grass type, was placed near a poisonous bog. (Yeah this one is a bit of a stretch)
Not only that, as someone else pointed out the effects of their rampage are seen in the parts they're imprisoned. The mountain around Chien-Pao is jagged and steep, like it was rapidly eroded by ice. Chi-Yu is surrounded by spires of obsidian. Ting-Lu is directly in front of a massive lake. Wo-Chien is surrounded by a ravished grassland. Makes me think they put up one final massive last stand before being imprisoned, leading to those areas being effected like they are, inadvertently making said areas naturally counter them.
Absolutely adore this group, and their theme is a certified bop. Perfectly embodies the feeling of an ancient almost otherworldly threat while still being funky and thrilling
Man, I love that we're back to having side legendaries that are locked behind a some secretive puzzle that you'll only ever find out about when either going out of your way to look for them or stumble across on complete accident. Feels like we're back in gen 3 seeking out the Regis. Hopefully Game Freak keep doing this for future games.
Same. I love the mystical and magical feel to it, it sounds like something you would hear while crossing the desert or exploring a tomb. I think the next gen will be Egypt tbh. This is very Egyptian sounding music.
I honestly love how, while fighting these critters, the ominous beat drop hits as soon as their ability procs. At first it's a very zen-like, mystical sound, like finding treasure. Then you are suddenly hit with their devastating abilities, and only then do you start to realize what you've so foolishly released into the world... Chi-Yu was my first one, and honestly, the atmosphere/location for it was best of the four. Not to mention that it doesn't immediately look evil, so going into the Treasure fights mostly blind, I really was hit with a wave of "I did it! I found the treasure!! A Literal treasure-oh my Arceus WHAT did that ability just say!?!" I just wish they were level 70-75, as being underleveled when facing them is really quite the rush.
Yeah 60 was kind of a bummer, especially since you find Terastallised Pokemon like Lucario and Dragonite in the wild at Lv 75. Was very shocked when I randomly managed to get all the stakes for Chien-Pao though, pretty badass theme
These four are quite the standouts from the usual optional legendary Pokémon, as instead of being additional guardians of order, they're bringers of disaster that needed to be sealed away.
I always felt in danger by these four. Like the only reason we had a chance catching them is that they just woke up, otherwise they would be too powerful
I think that theory is kind of funny because when I think of legendary I think that my Pokémon would get absolutely demolished by them, however my team of terminators only got defeated because I was scared they would murder them, which I almost did many times.
I love how you can actually hear chains breaking in the soundtrack it really gives the impression that something is Breaking Free of a seal that's been placed on it for hundreds of years
I absolutely love this theme so much! Also I don’t know if I am just overthinking this, but I feel like the placement of the shrines might correspond to what could contain them better. Chi-yu, being a fire type, has water throughout the entrance and plenty of water around the general area as well. Chien-Pao, being an ice type, is surrounded by tons of rocks and is in a relatively hot place as well. Tiang-Lu, being a ground type, is in an area completely sounded by plants. Finally, Wo-Chien, being a grass type, is surrounded by tons of bug and flying types in the area. This is probably a stretch but I just wanted to know why were the shrines places where they are
It's possibly like that because the people who thought about the seals probably wanted to put it around an area that has types that counter them so that in the case they ever got out, they'd be surrounded by potentially strong pokemon that counter them, possibly in hopes of distracting it before impending doom? But idk that's just my take. It seems like a cool detail though if this is the case
In the area where Chi-Yu is located which is North Province Area Two, there are some of the few pokemon that can out speed and one hit ko it such as Hawlucha and some of the few pokemon that can take hits from eat such as Blissey and Dragonite. Lorewise, Camerupt Arcanine and Houndoom can also stand a chance against Chi-Yu's flames The same also can be said with Chien-Pao with Pokemons like Hariyama, Tauros and Azumarill in the nearby west province area 2, which is not excatly where Chien-Pao is(Area 1) but close enough, and the Torkoal in area 1's sun can probably help with the hailstorm that Chien-Pao will cause too In the area where Wo-Chien is found, it is overloaded with many bug and flying types as you stated, and decent amount of fairy types considering that this is a early game area, grass type is also really common is the area and lorewise they can somewhat heal off the damage that Wo-Chien will do to the plants and battlewise they blank Wo-Chien's main moves such as Leech Seed ans Stun Spore(Yes I know everything is the area is clearly much weaker than Wo-Chien but this is clearly done for balancing purpose) In Socarrat Trail, which is where Ting-Lu is found, firstly Honchkrow is commonly found and Ting-Lu's ability to shake the ground doesn't really affect it much, and arguably one of the bug type with the highest fire power in the game Heracross is one of the most easily found Pokemon in the area, lots of other bug and grass type which can stop Ting-Lu in its tracks are very easily found too, in fact, out of the 21 Pokemon that can appear in the area, only Raichu, Jolteon, Sudowoodo, Grafaiai and maybe Tinkatuff has a bad matchup against Ting-Lu
@@BlackGX018 interesting! I can’t believe the amount of detail they put in! Though I still don’t know if it is intentional since they made some questionable decisions like having Geeta’s ace being glimmora (which should have been out first) and didn’t have king gambit out last to use its ability.
I love Wo-Chien so much, this entire line of legendaries is absolutely fantastic. My favorite trio/quartet for sure. The Regis come close but these are all so unique and amazingly designed imo
Wo-Chien has the judgemental stare of someone who just KNOWS why you went out of your way to catch it, like "Ohhh they've got a crush on the history teacher and wanna impress her huh?"

"Don't worry kid, freeing evil world-destroying beasts who are sealed for obvious reasons will not cause any disastrous consequences in the future" -Some hot history teacher
This franchise has given me some of my favorite soundtracks I've ever heard in my life but the thing that not only knocks us out of the ballpark but out of the stratosphere is the fact that this music gives you a very hard impending sense of "there might be consequences if I actually lose against this thing" vibe and that's been missing from Pokemon situations for a long time.
Usually I don’t find myself caring about Legendaries aside from the Titans (and the UBs, if they count). But these dudes are the PERFECT blend of unpredictable and menacing that a “legendary” creature should be! Not entirely hostile, but far from pure, and built upon a blood-soaked past. Their designs are all wonderful too, Wo-Chien may be the cleanest Legendary design just… EVER.
@@emiester729 The Titans aren't legendaries, opinion or not. Except for the Ground ones but they're Paradox Pokemon that became giant. That's like saying the Raid Bosses (Go, SwSh, SV)are Legendaries. Sure, some are legit legends but the rest are just powered up versions of regular Pokemon.
Anyone ever notice that the colour of the stakes/gate for each one is the colour that it's weak to? Or that the surrounding area is its natural weakness? Wo-Chien is surrounded by a swamp full of Poison, Bug and Flying types, Chien-Pao is in one of Paldea's sunniest areas surrounded by Fire and Fighting types, Ting-Lu is in a forest full of Grass and Bug types, and Chi-Yu is stuck inside a mountain cave next to a waterfall. Shows how much people feared them.
The most interesting fact about the Ruins to me is that they were created through the greed of humans. That's so interesting when something like that can create four pokemon, let alone one. I wonder what other emotions can create a pokemon like that.
It fits perfectly with "legendary/mythical" Pokémon because a lot of mythological figures were born from the idea or belief of emotions and concepts having manifested forms.
The bass kicking in at 00:25 is just addictive! What a banger of an ost. Between this and the area zero ost, this game has hands down given us the best music in a pokemon game. No contest
@@violentscorl697 As whole yeah, Hoenn and Sinnoh are top notch and maybe slightly better than S/V. It's just that the Area Zero OST is easily my favorite pokemon OST of all time and it's not even close imo
Honestly all of them are very silly, between “Scriiiiibe,” “Cut,” “Poouuuur,” and “Splashy!” but it’s a good juxtaposition against how dangerous and intimidating their theme is
So I did the in game history classes cuz I thought the teacher was really hot, but I actually really enjoyed learning about the story of these Pokemon. They have amazing lore, fantastic designs and an absolute banger battle theme. Easily my favorite extra legendary group so far
Not gonna lie this would be the fifth ability of the trope if there would actually be another ruin legendary But then again this trope is based on *Four* Perils in China..
It's by far one of the best quartet of Legendaries since a while + One of the best Legendary OST of the entire franchise I truly adore the "mystical" and "ancient" vibe this OST gives. In my opinion, it truly feels like we're fighting four weapons that almost blew up the Paldea region ! Chien-Pao/Chi-Yu supremacy.
It's funny how all of these guys (except Wo Chien) took their turns being a dominant meta threat. Chien pao for being a better weavile, Chi yu for being an insane special attacker, and Ting lu for being a wall with fissure.
It's so awesome that this theme has its own ending after the battle ends, instead of the happy go lucky jingle that usually accompanies catching Pokemon
On the legendaries, I love the idea of the hatred and vengeance felt by dying people coalescing into dangerous idols, and it was really ominous having to seek out binding stakes in the ground to free them On the song, pretty interesting menacing theme that never got to play for long enough because of my overleveled team, kinda reminded me initially of the Chairman McKraken phase 2 theme (which honestly could've fit these guys nicely) at 0:31 for some reason
@@sptflcrw8583 I care if I'm overleveled because I didn't get to actually fight them and I tended to get lucky with catch rate, and also it was hard to add them to my team because I'd have to grind them?? What

I love that after you catch them there's a proper ending to the track like it plays the regular music then this track pops back in and it ends it makes it really feel like you caught something that isn't just a regular pokemon
Chien-Pao is one of my top favorite legends now. I absolutely love its design. They made Zacian a Snow Leopard with 2 sword fangs. Someone also brought up that Chien-Pao kind of feels like a ruined and ancient sword of justice member and I love that idea.
There's something interesting I realized about the Treasures of Ruin that everybody and their mother probably already knows, but here goes; they are essentially polar opposites to the Tapus. The 4 Tapus are the guardians of Alola, and protect it from disasters. The Treasures of Ruin on the other hand are harbingers for disasters. Chien-Pao's Scarlet dex entry says that it plays in avalanches that it causes just for fun, and Chi-Yu swims through magma it creates. Even their shared signature moves work the same. Nature's Madness drains half of the opponent's current health, Ruination drains half of the opponent's current health.
@@pulverizator293 That's why I said everybody probably knew about it already. I only got the game recently and avoided all info to go in blind, and it took me a while to the Treasures
@@ArcherR135 tbh they are the counter parts to the quartet which is Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, and Enamorus is what the other person ment not the tapus
Chein-Pao is my favorite out of the bunch. The idea of a saber-tooth tiger with swords for teeth goes incredibly hard. I also enjoy the fact that this thing could probably coat the entire region in a blanket of snow if it wanted, but now that we have it we can just say “no”
I love how these are essentially the anti tapus. They're all dark type and they have a signature move that halves HP. And, of course, they have a banging theme 🎶
These legendaries definitely did a great job on capturing a mysterious vibes that I wish more legendaries have, like, this theme feels like it would TOTALLY play when fighting a completely unknown creature that nobody has ever seen so much to the point that said creature is not even in the pokedex I especially love how their designs all have the ruinous treasures incorporated into them
This song feels like it would get a guaranteed OHKO when using Overheat with 252+ SpA, Beads of Ruin, Choice Specs, Tera Fire, Helping Hand, and harsh sunlight
I find it interesting how, it is stated that only trainers pure of heart can remove the stakes, implying that those who sealed the treasures of ruin are fine with a pure hearted trainer releasing the legendaries in the future. Perhaps they hope that trainer can tame the legendaries and cure their hatred?
absolutely in love with how powerful, mysterious, ancient, threatening and even playful this theme sounds. it's the perfect fit for a quartet of capricious, destructive, vengeful pokémon of old. by far my favourite music to come out of this generation
I really love the 4. And the fact that you have to collect something to get them is just cool as well. Chien Pao is my absolute favorite for sure though
Chi-Yu is probably my new favorite fish Pokémon it's a fish MADE OF FIRE! how could you not like that? it was about time for there to be a fire type fish and Chi-Yu did it PERFECTLY! It has such an amazing design. One of my favorites from this region! And it has an amazing shiny too!
I love this song because it describes the legendaries oddly super well Mysterious and of foreign origin to paldea right off the bat, then cool scary suspenseful "OH MY FUCK LOOK OUT THIS IS STRONG AND RARE" plays But then it becomes chaotic playful music... Because despite being made of cursed objects brought to life by negative emotions, the pokemon created are just regular animals. But them existing how they feel comfortable is inherently destructive to EVERYONE around them. More than scared of these legends, I just feel bad for them
this makes me want a pokemon region based on china SOOOOO bad. chinese mythology is ripe with monsters, magic, and superstition and it would make such an interesting region with a crazy story.
If they gonna push it then we must have atleast double sized paldea as the chinese inspired region and true almost everything in china has a symbol that can also associated with animals. game freak not yet tapping this one though

i feel so bad bc i used to hate the designs for these four, and then i started locating them for dex reasons - and seeing them in-game COMPLETELY changed my view of them . they're so cool, with a banger theme to boot !!
Honestly I wouldn’t blame you too much, seeing an image of a Pokémon versus seeing it rendered and animated in-game are two very different things and a still image doesn’t necessarily do them justice I remember that I really didn’t like Regieleki or Pecharunt when I saw their art for the first time but the moment I saw them in game I immediately loved them
Between the paradox Pokémon and the treasures of ruin, it seems like the professors of Paldea couldn’t care less about the safety of others let alone the entire world.
@@encryptedxchaos3321 now that you mention this, it actually sounds more Indian like instead of a combination of Chinese and Egyptian music combined. 👀🤔😲
@@encryptedxchaos3321 I dunno why, but even though there's rumors floating around that gen 10 will be based off of Italy, I feel like Gen 11 will be based off of China or something cuz of the Chinese related hints that are floating around in Pokemon sv. Example: The names given to the Dark legendary quartet and what they're based off , Mr.Hassel and the dragon trainers (dragons are mostly seen around a lot in China, even though there's other places in Asian culture that carry them), music that's sounds like something from China was played anytime you go over to the zone where you'll find the team star fighting type base, more dragon pokemon old and new have been seen a lot in SV... I love how this theme goes like: "You are facing ancient devils, behold their power" And then "NOW IT'S BOPPING TIME" I didn't know that I needed a theme like this until now
The Treasures of Ruin are the most interesting legendary groups we've had for a while. They're not just sat in a cave or secluded area waiting to be found, you have to solve a puzzle of sorts to unlock them, plus they share a unique set of abilities, where most legends will have some variation of an existing ability.
@@spidey5558 They have a slam-dunk setup for implementing them in a future Legends game with their backstory. Just make us fight the ancient king of Paldea in possession of their relics, have them go berserk after we defeat him, and there we go.
@@timmyreobed5043 I would love for a culmination battle be having to Dark Souls Fight them all at onceafter fighting them individually (like in any game where there's a team of big enemies to beat)
I think the idea of this Quartet is interesting, the treasures of a bygone era coming to life as malevolent pokemon embodying different types all with subtle and in a case(Ting Lu) not so subtle design nods. I love Chi Yu especially because I originally thought it was a fire water type because it's a fish but I then learned its made of fire. That's really cool. Also the theme is solid.
This song took so many 180's istg. First it's a slightly ominous battle song, then it turns into Tunak Tunak Tun, and then into Berdly's theme, and then back into Tunak Tunak Tun then it turned to something out of Sonic CD. This song is crazy I love it.
Thank you for including the "outro" where you catch them at the end! I remember hearing that in-game and thinking it was a really cool way to finish the song, rather than the usual "Wild Pokemon Caught/Defeated" jingle.
Definitely some of the most unique pokemon in gen 9, and Chi-Yu is my favourite of the 4. Tho as a Chinese and have heard of how westernisation use Chinese in a bizarre way, it honestly make me so hesitant to even pronounce these Pokemon (except for Ting-Lu, this guy is easy) as they can have more than 2 ways of pronunciation if you also include how non Chinese speaker pronounce these Pinyin with these specific spelling, which Chi-Yu having more than 4 of them due to 'Yu' can be either jade (most likely this) or fish depending on the tone oof So I just occasionally pronounce them with the item and the animal in mandarin Chinese pinyin for the English name, and try to ignore the English spelling lmao For those who are wondering, these guys' Chinese names are kinda simple but straightforward. They are combined into this motif of "ancient item animal". Wo-Chien: 古简蜗 (gu3 jian3 wo1 - tho the 1st character must be pronounced as "gu2" here due to the pinyin pronunciation rule of two "3" toned side by side will have the first character had its tone changed to "2") or "ancient bamboo slips snail" Chien-Pao: 古剑豹 (gu3 jian4 bao4) or "ancient sword leopard" Ting-Lu: 古鼎鹿 (gu3 ding3 lu4) or "ancient Chinese cauldron deer" Chi-Yu: 古玉鱼 (gu3 yu4 yu2) or "ancient jade fish". Yes this is what I mean by similar pronunciation with different tones. Side note: 剑(sword) and 简(bamboo slips) do have almost the same pronunciation of 'jian' but with different tones, but somehow the English name of the duo had 'Chien' which can sound different than 'jian'. Also 'Chien' does not exist in the Pinyin context, but the closest we can get is either 'chen' or 'qian'.
With this, it's now finished!

Interesting, thank you!
Hey, thanks, greets from Mexico.
Thank you for the explanations. You should check their names in other languages, for example the fish is literally named Yuyu in some.
Aren't they also based on 4 figures of chinese mythology?
You deserve all the likes, that was super cool
Just noticed - All four of the legendaries do a little wiggle before engaging in battle because they napped for so long. So sweet.

ALSO: I LOOOOVE their lore so much. The duality of *Ambition* seems to be a primary theme of Paldea and it’s used to great effect with how the greed of the old kingdom gave life to these Pokémon that are literally made of some of humanity’s worst qualities.
Their lore is really underrated they are so cool !
They also seem to have a lot of parallels and perhaps inversions to the Tapus from Gen 7:
On being the inverse:
-The Treasures are portrayed as destructive invaders from other lands while the Tapus are protectors who have existed at least since the islands were born.
-The Abilities of the Treasures adversely affect everyone on the field except themselves, while the Abilities of the Tapus automatically set Terrains, which benefit everyone in a battle.
For the parallels:
-The Tapus and the Treasures are both quartets.
-They all have the same base stat total of 570 - which, interestingly, all of the Paradox Pokemon except Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant have as well.
-Their signature moves, Ruination and Nature's Madness, are different types but have the same effect - halving the target's remaining HP.

The people who did this as a profession were called ‘scribes.’
Chien-Pao : “Cuuuttt!” - Now, this one is pretty obvious, as one of the things that SWORDS have always been used for is…well, cutting.
Ting-Lu : “Poouurr!” - This one is also fairly easy to guess the reasoning behind. You can pour liquids both into and out of a VESSEL.
Chi-Yu : “Splashyyy!” - It’s a goldfish.
I love how the first 3 are related to the functions of their objects... and the last one is just "splashy" XDDDD
In French, the little text for Chi-Yu is something like "Adddd mi rrrrr"

Makes me wonder if this group is only dangerous because of the humans previously associated with them? That perhaps if you're a little better, you can call upon their power without causing future disasters?
One should be careful though, for It's that exact kind of thought process that sows the seeds of future ruin.
So true~
A lot of Pokemon were more dangerous in the past because people couldn't control them the way they can now. Pokeballs have come a looooong way...if you ignore the implied Fridge Horror of Pokeballs subtly brainwashing Pokemon to some extent to be subservient to whoever catches them.

They're based on the "Four Perils" of Chinese mythology, which is really cool because Legends Arceus finally introduced the final member of the "Four Symbols" with Enamorus (who is designed to be Genbu).

Chien-Pao, an ice type, was located in the south of the region, a hot area without any snow
Ting-Lu, a ground type, was located in an area with deep rooted trees far from the main land
Wo-chien, a grass type, was placed near a poisonous bog. (Yeah this one is a bit of a stretch)
i like this idea. and about Wo-Chien being in a bog, it is weak to poison so that helps its case
For Wo-Chien, it is also surrounded by plenty of bug and flying types in the area
You are way too positive and not negative enough for this garbage game. Quit licking gamefreak, weirdo
This is garbage, so îs area zero ew
Man, I love that we're back to having side legendaries that are locked behind a some secretive puzzle that you'll only ever find out about when either going out of your way to look for them or stumble across on complete accident. Feels like we're back in gen 3 seeking out the Regis. Hopefully Game Freak keep doing this for future games.
By far, my favorite legendary music theme to date
Legends Arceus legendary theme is my favourite, but this one is a close second
Same. I love the mystical and magical feel to it, it sounds like something you would hear while crossing the desert or exploring a tomb. I think the next gen will be Egypt tbh. This is very Egyptian sounding music.
Same. I thought nothing could ever top Ho-Oh’s theme, but I was so wrong.
@@KingStr0ng The quartet is based on Chinese mythology though. I don't think it was made to sound Egyptian. An Egyptian-inspired gen would be sick tho
@@xxferalfreakxxI mean, we’ve already got some Egyptian looking Pokémon
Hilarious to see the eeby deeby baby and then he has an ability like "KILL YOUR PARENTS aura"
I mean I caught Wo-Chien with lvl 33 pokemon, 3 gym badges, 2 Titans, and 1 Team star base defeated.
@@CT-7567-💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
These four are quite the standouts from the usual optional legendary Pokémon, as instead of being additional guardians of order, they're bringers of disaster that needed to be sealed away.
I always felt in danger by these four. Like the only reason we had a chance catching them is that they just woke up, otherwise they would be too powerful
Maybe they were too far away from the negative emotions that created them , so they got weakened
I think that theory is kind of funny because when I think of legendary I think that my Pokémon would get absolutely demolished by them, however my team of terminators only got defeated because I was scared they would murder them, which I almost did many times.
By the time I went after them, I was using the Iron Valiant
The greatest creation to false swipe the ruinous quartet
@@notsofreeexp9199 that actually makes a ton of sense 🤔🤔
Mind officially blown 🤯
In the area where Chi-Yu is located which is North Province Area Two, there are some of the few pokemon that can out speed and one hit ko it such as Hawlucha and some of the few pokemon that can take hits from eat such as Blissey and Dragonite. Lorewise, Camerupt Arcanine and Houndoom can also stand a chance against Chi-Yu's flames
The same also can be said with Chien-Pao with Pokemons like Hariyama, Tauros and Azumarill in the nearby west province area 2, which is not excatly where Chien-Pao is(Area 1) but close enough, and the Torkoal in area 1's sun can probably help with the hailstorm that Chien-Pao will cause too
In the area where Wo-Chien is found, it is overloaded with many bug and flying types as you stated, and decent amount of fairy types considering that this is a early game area, grass type is also really common is the area and lorewise they can somewhat heal off the damage that Wo-Chien will do to the plants and battlewise they blank Wo-Chien's main moves such as Leech Seed ans Stun Spore(Yes I know everything is the area is clearly much weaker than Wo-Chien but this is clearly done for balancing purpose)
In Socarrat Trail, which is where Ting-Lu is found, firstly Honchkrow is commonly found and Ting-Lu's ability to shake the ground doesn't really affect it much, and arguably one of the bug type with the highest fire power in the game Heracross is one of the most easily found Pokemon in the area, lots of other bug and grass type which can stop Ting-Lu in its tracks are very easily found too, in fact, out of the 21 Pokemon that can appear in the area, only Raichu, Jolteon, Sudowoodo, Grafaiai and maybe Tinkatuff has a bad matchup against Ting-Lu

The Titans?
@@TheRedSmartyI think they’re referring to the regis
@@Coran_06 Oh, that makes sense. Overlapping terms are confusing.
@@TheRedSmarty Wdym? Klawf is a legendary imo
Well, they're not JUST greed. Chien-Pao is made of hatred, Chi-Yu envy, Wo-Chien a grudge, and Ting-Lu fear.
It fits perfectly with "legendary/mythical" Pokémon because a lot of mythological figures were born from the idea or belief of emotions and concepts having manifested forms.

Chi Yu and Chien Pao for the win!
It's funny how all of these guys (except Wo Chien) took their turns being a dominant meta threat. Chien pao for being a better weavile, Chi yu for being an insane special attacker, and Ting lu for being a wall with fissure.
The (except Wo Chien) part made me sad. At least wolfey used him and threw everyone off guard
It's so awesome that this theme has its own ending after the battle ends, instead of the happy go lucky jingle that usually accompanies catching Pokemon
On the legendaries, I love the idea of the hatred and vengeance felt by dying people coalescing into dangerous idols, and it was really ominous having to seek out binding stakes in the ground to free them
On the song, pretty interesting menacing theme that never got to play for long enough because of my overleveled team, kinda reminded me initially of the Chairman McKraken phase 2 theme (which honestly could've fit these guys nicely) at 0:31 for some reason
Who cares if you're overleveled? That doesn't affect catch rate

Actually they're mean to be the opposites of the forces of nature
@@pulverizator293 That's why I said everybody probably knew about it already. I only got the game recently and avoided all info to go in blind, and it took me a while to the Treasures
Wait isn’t the attack called ruination

These Pokémon are also the evil opposites (the Four Perils) of the Forces of Nature, who are based on the Four Auspicious Beasts.
They also dont look alike at all, unlike tapus which resemble each other
And they're not from paldea
they also destroted the region vs protecting it (I guess that's the typing again)
if we go off of what they're based off of, they're basically the anti-therian genies
They're also the opposite of the Swords of Justice (w/Keldeo) type-wise
These legendaries definitely did a great job on capturing a mysterious vibes that I wish more legendaries have, like, this theme feels like it would TOTALLY play when fighting a completely unknown creature that nobody has ever seen so much to the point that said creature is not even in the pokedex
I especially love how their designs all have the ruinous treasures incorporated into them

Mysterious and of foreign origin to paldea right off the bat, then cool scary suspenseful "OH MY FUCK LOOK OUT THIS IS STRONG AND RARE" plays
But then it becomes chaotic playful music... Because despite being made of cursed objects brought to life by negative emotions, the pokemon created are just regular animals.
Tho as a Chinese and have heard of how westernisation use Chinese in a bizarre way, it honestly make me so hesitant to even pronounce these Pokemon (except for Ting-Lu, this guy is easy) as they can have more than 2 ways of pronunciation if you also include how non Chinese speaker pronounce these Pinyin with these specific spelling, which Chi-Yu having more than 4 of them due to 'Yu' can be either jade (most likely this) or fish depending on the tone oof
So I just occasionally pronounce them with the item and the animal in mandarin Chinese pinyin for the English name, and try to ignore the English spelling lmao
For those who are wondering, these guys' Chinese names are kinda simple but straightforward. They are combined into this motif of "ancient item animal".
Wo-Chien: 古简蜗 (gu3 jian3 wo1 - tho the 1st character must be pronounced as "gu2" here due to the pinyin pronunciation rule of two "3" toned side by side will have the first character had its tone changed to "2") or "ancient bamboo slips snail"
Chien-Pao: 古剑豹 (gu3 jian4 bao4) or "ancient sword leopard"
Ting-Lu: 古鼎鹿 (gu3 ding3 lu4) or "ancient Chinese cauldron deer"
Chi-Yu: 古玉鱼 (gu3 yu4 yu2) or "ancient jade fish".
So just to clarify-
Wo-Chien: Gu Jian Wo
Chien-Pao: Gu Jian Bao or Gu Chen Bao
Ting-Lu: Gu Ding Lu
Chi-Yu: Gu Yu Yu
I just learn something today :) thanks for this information
