Love the vintage stuff, i buy it anytime i get a chance. I like the toned silver which vintage silver tends to be. I've picked several nice vintage pieces from pawn shops for the cost of the silver alone. I think I've done pretty good over the years. got several of those Engelhard prospector rounds too I love them. Also, anything toned, I'm a sucker for. Silver looks nice when it has a bit of toning.

Hey there silver struck. I have a few vintage bars but the most perplexing to me is my Oxford assaying and refining co. 100 oz bar. It was poured and then pressed similar to a 1 oz bar with Oxford large on front and small all over the back. Problem is I can't find anything out about it. I can't even find another bar like it on the web. I emailed the company as they are still in business but all they could tell me is "yep that's our bar" & "we don't know how many were made" and it was likely made in mid 80's. Where can I go for more info?
The biggest resource for vintage silver is allengelhard.com. I did check their site for Oxford and it's not listed. Researching vintage bars is very difficult because they pre-date the internet and even computers! Not surprised Oxford did not keep adequate records. I wish I could help more. At least check out allengelhard- they are nice people. Maybe you could take pics of the bar and email AE to see if they know anymore.
Love this video. Thanks for creating and sharing your knowledge. As a newbie, I wonder if 1980s libertads and balance onzas are considered vintage. I appreciate any thoughts you or others may have on the topic of older Mexican silver, which I have begun to stack. Also, what about older silver such as the one Balboa from Panama or the Peru one Sol, which I also love? What exactly makes something "vintage"? When does something cross this line? Is it the date and the fact that it is no longer being produced? For instance, would older model (-1980) Britannias be considered vintage? Thanks for sharing any thoughts.
Great questions Mer Meg. I'll gladly offer my opinion but keep in mind- I'm one out of many stackers that will have differing views. I'm a huge fan of older Mexican silver. I did a video on the 1981 Libertads not too long ago, you may enjoy that video. Vintage for me would be silver produced from around 1940 through the 1980's. Something like a 1600's ship wreck coin would be a collectable antique. Morgan Dollars are a numismatic coin for example. Slapping the vintage label on an Engelhard, Johnson Mathey or ASR bar is easier because those companies are gone. Geiger is still around and if you have a bar from the 1970's...it's vintage. As far as the Britannia is concerned, that's a coin so it has numismatic value. An older silver round of the same age is vintage-IMO. The Mexican silver is a tricky one....some stackers call it a coin and others a round. That said- Mexican silver is often called vintage. Well Mer Meg- hoped the above helps. Thanks for watching!- Silver Struck.

HI Megan, new to silver in general or Vintage silver? Vintage silver takes time to accumulate and some researching to acquire the right pieces. If you are new to any silver- the best way to start off is to buy a few ounces. You could buy from a LCS (Local coin shop) or on-line from JM Bullion, Apmex etc. I'd buy something with the smallest premium over spot just to get started. That way- you will have started your own stack! After you get started you might find out what you really want to stack- silver bars, silver rounds, government backed coins- many choices. Purchasing your first silver will be special no matter what you end up acquiring.
HI Lee, That's about what the vintage 10 ounce Engelhard's go for on the market. The more rare versions can command even more money. It's up to you if you think the bar is worth buying. The least expensive way to own Engelhard is to hunt them down at Local Coin Shops. If you put the time in to find them, you can sometimes find them for 2-5 dollars over spot price. That's how you realize the secret value of vintage silver. If you find that bar for around 300.00 at a LCS or coin show...you could get 379 on Ebay. How neat is that? The easy way to own Engelhard is to just pay the money and buy them on Ebay. The value should increase over time, as there are only so many Engelhard bars out there. Hope this reply is helpful. Thanks for watching!
Imagine - there is a war and you need to swap your silver for a loaf of bread. Just like it was during the WW2 in Europe. You really think anyone will care if that piece of silver is vintage? Seriously? It will go by its weight. That bar will buy you two loafs of bread and a bar of butter. If you are lucky. At least you will live for a few more days…
Yeah, I think you missed the point of this video. This is a video about gaining an advantage in the silver marketplace. Purchasing a vintage collectable at regular or generic pricing and realizing your gain in the collector market. Of course two years after posting this video-vintage silver is so popular, that's hard to do now. This video as nothing to do with trading silver for bread during a war. I would not be interested in trading my silver for bread during a war anyway as most people do not even realize what silver is or could use it in that sort of situation. Please do not buy silver with the expectation of trading for bread- it's a bad idea.
Yup- Not all vintage silver is created equal. I like to collect mostly Engelhard because there is more information out there about their silver verse any other vintage. Spent the last month trying to track down info on ASR bars and have not got too far. Thanks for watching!

Awesome, thank you for checking out the vintage silver!
Love any vintage silver, but do your homework!
Yup- Not all vintage silver is created equal. I like to collect mostly Engelhard because there is more information out there about their silver verse any other vintage. Spent the last month trying to track down info on ASR bars and have not got too far. Thanks for watching!
American silver refiners I think 🤔
The ASR bars I have are "Alaska Silver Refining" bars. Or so- that's what some research has lead me to...not definite yet.
Could also be Alaska Smelting and Refining. I contacted a historical society in Alaska to see if they had anything on the company.
