Hey Justin!!! You mentioned being married and in PT school! I recently got married and would love to hear how you balance marriage and PT school!!! Love your videos! Can’t wait to watch more!
@@jessieharris5242 Hey jesse! Yes! I got married during the end of my 2nd year of PT school. I can spend so many hours talking about this aspect of PT vs relationships. but my biggest advice: make boundaries so when you're supposed to spend quality time with your significant other, make sure its 100% devoted to that. And when its time to study, make sure your time is 100% committed to that. If you mix the two, it can be difficult and stressful in the relationship and also your academics. Are there specific questions you were trying to ask? I could make a video on this!!
Starting my first semester of PT school next month! So excited. For those of u looking to go into this field i strongly suggest getting a job as a rehab tech (it exposed me to so much plus u make connections with PT’s). Take the extra step if u are serious about your future like becoming CPR certified, joining groups associated with your major in college etc. It looks great on your PT application. & also SAVE!! Applying to PT school can be pretty pricey. Oh & volunteer as soon as possible to make sure this is actually the occupation for u!
Jasmine you’re absolutely right jasmine!! Thanks for sharing your expertise and your experiences!!! I know a lot of students interested in PT will benefit from this 🤩
@@Jasminemarie966 THANK YOU!!! I really appreciate it so much! What kind of content would you like to see more of? I know you commented on my other video on the specialties... but anything else? If you enjoyed some of my videos, please feel free to share so others can enjoy them too!
2 years later and im just here as evidence. Not lying at all with this comment Jasmine! I am a Outpatient rehab Tech and it is definitely a massive advantage when exposed to everything and you make great connections that can later help you on those letters of recommendations.
Yes please! Make a video about how to be a good aid or volunteer at the physical therapy clinic if you haven't done it yet. I want to become a PT and I would like to learn more about it.
yeeeesssssss! exactly! me too! I thought I am going to learn about ortho only. then i was surprised with neuroanatomy and cardiovascular courses :))) BUT NOW I LOVE PT MUCH MORE THAN BEFORE.
Omg this is a huge relief! I’m a personal trainer and I was so scared I would loose my gains when I got in to PT school BC all my friends kept telling me that I would have no life once I got accepted
PHEWW!! Never let go of the gainz!! haha I'm glad you found this video super helpful! This gave me so much hope! I have a dog, I'm moving in with my partner, and I want to keep up my weightlifting routine when I start PT school this fall. I keep feeling like something's gonna give, but it's good to know that if you set your priorities straight and have good time management, that there will be time for it all. I'd love to see a video about how you kept up a gym routine!!!
Yessss I’m so excited for you! And for your dog too! (Btw your dog will be your best study partner) 🐶 📚 a lot of the times if students do not set their intentions, then somethings gives. But I told myself that my studying, fitness, and relationships are my top priority. And they never gave!! So then once I got a handle on that, I added other things like a part time job, personal training, TH-cam, etc. you got this!!! I’m here to support you through the pt school journey!! Please reach out if you need anything
I’m a highschool junior and have been think a LOT about what I want to be and I am really passionate about becoming a physical therapist and this video just reassured me. Thank you!
Tyler Reed YASSSS GIRL! I’m sure you’ve been thinking A LOT, I mean you caps all of it haha but I’m glad you took the time to ponder what your life’s journey will look like. It took me several years after graduation to figure out what I wanted (ahem*...PT). I’m glad this video has given you insight and helped inspire self-change! Proud of you. Keep me posted on your journey!!
PT school was 8 years ago for me haha, but I have to agree with all of these. We had quite a few people working out during lunch, and even having part time jobs. It's all about managing yourself for sure.
Dr. Siobhan France YESSS EXACTLY!! It is 100% possible to make thing happen. I think many students think all you can do with your life is be a student and nothing else, but I would have to firmly disagree with that! You’ve been working as a PT for 8 years? Which setting are you in?
I didn’t even know what physical therapy was until I tore my acl my senior year (this year) of highschool and everything about it just fascinates me, a long 4-5 years ahead but I’m up for the challenge
Im sorry you had to experience an ACL tear - the path through rehab is super challenging, but if you were successful with PT, then I KNOW you're a fighter!!! hehe Do you have any questions regarding the DPT school process?
Hey nottasha! Im glad my channel has been able to bring you value and help you learn more about the PT profession. Thank you for subscribing and for your support!! I was thinking of making a video on the differences between PT and OT. You think that would be a good video to make?
liftforchange I think that’s a great idea! It would be awesome if you could do a cost-benefit type of video thing with PT school like, if the cost is worth it (pt school can be really expensive, I believe) ultimately? Thank you so much!!! ☺️
nottasha in the process on hunting down form student OTs, so a video is in the works!!! Yeah definitely. I wanted to make a video on finances and DPT so I’ll definitely include that 🤩

Brandon Kopfstein yes, that makes things super helpful as far as life timeline haha 🤣 actually I didn’t really have any troubles, except when I was working at the hospital. I had to cover it up with a sleeve. But typically outpatient places don’t mind. But I would just ask to be respectful to see if they care about it

i really want to be a physical therapist and can’t see myself doing anything else but i’m now intimidated by what the schooling entails 😬 (i’m a sophomore in hs)
Isabella Pierce hey Isabella! If your heart is set on it, then DO IT. Don’t let the intimidation of schooling and the preparation to get into school hold you back. You know, there are so many students that want to be a PT, but simply because they feel they are not worthy enough, smart enough, hard working enough, and all those doubts - they don’t even give themselves a chance to even try. So encourage you TO JUST TRY. You’re at a very good place in high school to start looking into which programs you want to get into and then start taking the appropriate prerequisites. Here is a video on the FASTEST WAY to get into dpt school th-cam.com/video/9zAhsxC2eug/w-d-xo.html If you let fear control what you want in life, then you will never get what you want. I wanted to be a PT when I was 21 years old. So I made that choice and never looked back. Look where I am now 😊
Isabella Pierce in 2020 I’ll be coming out with an ebook on everything you need to know to get into dot school. Would that be something you would be interested in?
Priyanka Midha psychology has to do with the brain, particularly the psyche (which by definitely pertains to the human soul, mind, spirit). In physical therapy it has to do with the brain, but more in the aspect of connecting different functions of the brain and which body parts they connect to. hope that helps!!

Hey Mr. Drop it where it's low, I am very interested in receiving a PTA degree, the only reason why and assistant physical therapy is cause I hear the assistants get to work more with the patient who is injured or needs to recover as best he/she is capable of. I have a TBI, long story won't blow up this comment however I am far from getting into a physical therapy school, I currently am wanting to achieve an AA then move towards a PT school. However, I really appreciate all these videos you'll be sharing with us all. =) Thank you Nick Schagerer
Hey Nick! Thanks for dropping by. Thank you for sharing your history with your TBI. I hope you have the resources to help you be successful! Regarding your interest in PTA - sometimes PTA's will spend more follow up sessions with patients, only because a PT is able to perform first-time evaluations (PTA are not able to do that). So in a business perspective, its worth it to have PT do evaluations, and PTA for follow ups. You get what im saying? On the other hand, this system is not everywhere. Some clinics are like that and other clinics have it set up differently (like a clinic will only have PTs and not a single PTA). Just depends on where you go. How far are you from getting your AA?
I know it’s a while since you had to deal with prerequisites for your program but a video on how you managed your time/ how you prepared mentally or studied for classes and the GRE would be super helpful.

Yingchi Thao So great that you’re finding the channel helpful! I actually started late in PT school too and I also failed my first 3 years out of college. I started my journey with a 2.3 GPA but I told myself I’ll never fail another class. And that was the start of my DPT. you can do it too!

Hey! I came across your channel and love the energy and infor you provide. I’m making a career change and getting my ducks in a row to apply to PT school. I’ve heard that majority of people prefer the outpatient setting and I myself am more familiar with that setting too. Could you make a video going more into detail about the difference between outpatient and inpatient? Or all the other areas you mentioned in this video? (Neuro, peds, geriatrics)
Nat Oh thank you so much nat! That means a lot and it’s encouragements like this that keeps me going!! YEEEE you know I’m always #teamPT haha if you need any help, let me know! I agree that it is more common to have pts go down the outpatient route, but that doesn’t mean that is the only way! I think when most people think of PT, they think of the outpatient setting, which may bias most people down that road. But in school, you learn all the different fields that are possibilities you can enter into (like I listed in my video) And YES!! I think that topic will be a great one and I will def make a video on that for you nat!

I want to become one but the entery test into the degree where I live is rediculues because it tests in things that have nothing to do with becoming a physiotherapists... maybe I need to study it in another country.
GuidetteExpert physical therapy is a tough profession to get into! But if you believe you have what it takes, why not try for it?! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!! Which country are you living in?
liftforchange I live in Iceland! Im looking for schools abroad that have ways to make it possible for me to get in because their entery exams in Iceland is unfair. . They ask things that a They test in icelandic sagas, phsycology & weard stuff like a question on who played batman in a movie that was just showed in the cinema before the exam. I rather be tested on the important stuff & my history backround. The test doesnt respect the group that was not in highschoolor preschool in their country because they seem to want to ask viking history or icelamdic related that only if you went in preschool there shouid know.
GuidetteExpert wow! Thank you for the information. I would have no idea that exams in Iceland would ask such random questions? It is actually very strange that they would ask cinema questions on a PT exam... I will definitely look into PT programs in the United States! Once you get into PT school, I promise you every question that you get ask in PT school will be related to physical therapy
liftforchange yea exactly, they said their trying to evoid nerds because they want people that also have other type of knowledge... also they ask a question about the opinions of some topic like steroids to see how you will answer. They dont take people into interviews either. The schools in Europe require 4-5 years of study to become a PT certificated. In the USA they have 2 year master in sport/excersise therapy for people that fill up the requirmented courses. 😅 Im tryna go in that route.
GuidetteExpert daaaang... so interesting how different countries have their different requirements. I know that the education in the United States is really great don’t matter if you go into a masters or doctorate level for the fields like Kinesiology or exercise science or physical therapy. Just be sure to double check where ever you eat to end up, that they accept your country’s license you know?
Are you trying to bridge to DPT? Or stay as PTA? If you are planning on staying as an PTA, there are some factors you can pay attention to to help your clinical reasoning and skills. For example, learning to listen in on red flag questions and the process of referring out. Or paying attention to techniques like joint mobilizations, therex, muscle energy technique, etc but these are all things you learned in school too no?
Im in the 11th grade and I was wondering what my experience might be like if I pursue the major I want to in 2 years. This video made me really get to know better what's involved in being a physical therapist. Thank you for making it, my only criticism to this video would be that some of the points get addressed a couple of times and could use a bit more concrete of an explanation, however this is still a really good video. Maybe a more specific script could help you in the future. Keep up the good work this kind of content is really helpful to someone like me so I am now a subscriber. 😃
Jay Burgos hey jay! Thank you for your support and feedback! Really appreciate it. I’m glad this video was also helpful for you too!!! So what major did you want to get into? And what points did you want further explanation of?
hey man thanks for the insight! applying to pt school next year and currently interning as an aide the past few months. I'm really learning a lot, but would love to know what to look for as an aide so that I can get the most out of this experience. Thanks!
liftforchange So honestly I’m just looking into anywhere that will accept me locally. So DPT schools in New Jersey and New York; ideally Rutgers would be my best bet in terms of affordability (not sure if that’s exactly how to look at things). As for niche I’m not too sure cause I haven’t done extensive research yet, but I’m thinking something like sports rehab related if that’s even possible. I haven’t seen the other areas of physical therapy yet, but currently working in an outpatient clinic that specializes in spine related injuries so that’s been really cool. Thanks for everything!

What's your opinion on becoming a PT at say age 48 to graduate? Was there anyone in your class that was in there late 30s and early 40s? Can I work into my 60s or would it be hard? What can I do to increase my chances of getting into a program? Example if I was to take some cert in biomechanics from ACE , volunteer, extra shadowing, taking a physical therapy aide course , exercise physiology, nutrition , human movement, pilates?
hey Jeff!! Great questions!!!!! So the oldest age we had in our program was early 30's. If you look at the link in this video on the PTCAS sata report (th-cam.com/video/i_ImLMjK2RY/w-d-xo.html) you'll find the statistics on age and gender. I believe for 35+ it was about 1.5% of all applicants, while the majority were ages 20-25. I know PT's that are in their 60's that are working and they love it, but there is also a saying that PT's retire early because their hands (especially thumbs) start to go out of commission because of heavy manual therapy. HOWEVER, there are still effective ways to treat without being so hard on your hands - as long as you have early awareness and early prevention, I'm sure things will turn out good! As far as increasing your changes, focusing on your GPA would be the first priority (VIDEO ON GPA: th-cam.com/video/HD3xFKHMv7E/w-d-xo.html). Then after, you need to find strategies to stand out among other applicants (HOW TO STAND OUT: th-cam.com/video/pkq9rtoA_xc/w-d-xo.html). There are some courses that will for sure help you a bit more, like exercise physiology, nutrition, etc but I would not bank on those courses to get you accepted
I have to decided on a major I plan to take before I decided on DPT. What is the best major to take for a bachelors to later enter the DPT more prepared? ( Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Athletic Training...)
Kimberly Paniagua hey Kim!! That’s a great question! Have you need this video I made? TOP MAJORS FOR DPT SCHOOL th-cam.com/video/i_ImLMjK2RY/w-d-xo.html I think you will find this helpful (: also, what’s your current major????
it is super hard.... but dont get 1 measly math course stop you from achieving greatness! There are tons of way to help pass the class! Just because you get one B or C from a course wont deny you from DPT school
I am a first year DPT student just starting my second semester. How did you adjust to studying in DPT school and what did you find was most effective for learning information from lectures? Maybe a video idea.
Hey hey hey! Thanks for asking this and requesting the video. I’ll definitely make a video on this to explain more. but to answer you question now, you learn to build the academic stamina as you progress in school. You were accepted because you’ve proven your academic grit. Now dpt school is taking it to the next level - and for the most part, you will be able to rise to the occasion. Take it one day at a time. Everyone has their own way of studying. I would suggest trying out different methods and see what works best for you. For example, many students record lecture and re-listen to it as they review their notes. I tried this once and I did not work well for me. Other students like to study in groups, or by themselves. Some like flash cards and others like drawing. There are many ways!! I would definitely recommend trying to navigate through it all and see what is most effective for you. And once you find that, stick with it!! Even when it gets hard and more rigorous, stay persistent with what works. If you studied a particular way and that yielded good results, then you should keep that method, ya know? If it works, then why change it.
This was great! I’m a high school senior and I really want to go into physical therapy , I just don’t know what I should study for my undergraduate degree. I was originally going to go into exercise science but lately I’ve been watching videos where people advise people to stray away from the “norms”. And maybe go into other majors that do not have to do with science. I need help! What did you major in for your undergraduate degree??! Also, do PT schools pay attention to what schools you get your undergrad from?
Whats up Abby, thanks for dropping in! I remember I was in a similar situation too. Honestly, yes, those are more common majors, but I really believe the concepts you'll learn in ES or Kin, are going to help excel you in your DPT career. Especially if you apply the knowledge with internships/work. If you're passionate about ES, i would go for it. I dont think having a different major will help you out too much. I mean it does help you stand out a little more, but I wouldnt bank on it for a guarantee in for PT school. My advise: pursue an education that you are interested in. Creative Circles great idea! I’m going to add that in my course that I’m making. Have you registered for it yet? A lot of programs will allow you to apply without having all requirements - as long as you have them finished before the start of the program. Call to make sure. But if that’s the case, you should be able to begin on time!
I am considering PT AIDE, because, if i am going to take a low paid job it might as well be interesting. There is school about 4-6 months. But The pay is very low [most advertize minimum wage.] for job with this much responsibility and requirements. Should i look at something else?
@@drjustinleedpt I was interested in Oc.T. Aide or P.T. aide, but most jobs are advertizing for Rehab. aid and mixing to support all three areas of the practice. However the low pay has me reconsidering.
Great video! Looking for your suggestion on moving myself forward. I have a BSc and I'm an OTA/PTA and worked as a PTA in the past. I'm also a certified personal trainer and really interested in the way the body works and moves and preventing injury especially with working out. I feel like thats my calling. I'm wondering if PT is really the next step for me because I really want to mesh the two together. Or do you think there would be so much more extra information irrelevant to the route I want to go and perhaps just go for a program more geared towards exercise prevention or to become an exercise specialist? TIA :)
Functionally Fit I love questions like these because I get to boast about PT so much. Okay so... as you know PTs are movement experts. In PT school you learn so much about human movement and how bad movement can affect pathology later on. So if you’re trying to prevent injury and go down that route, PT will give you a huge advantage. But weigh out the costs too you know?
@@drjustinleedpt great thank you :) I'm doing many fitness challenges online and promoting much info geared towards doing exercises properly and having good posture with ADL's that I feel like its the correct route to take. Im assuming a masters in sport and exercise or something similar may not cover exactly the same topics?
Functionally Fit all of that sounds awesome!!! If all of us health experts can just do a little bit to influence a little bit around us, this world would be a leaner place haha and yes you’re absolutely right. There a lot of avenues you can take in the human body world
Advice for high school students wanting to go into physical therapy. I am going into my senior year of high school and want to get my DPT and working on my college search. I just want to hear what you recommend for someone who’s new and doesn’t know what’s going on 😂. Thank you
Aidan Sicard what’s up Aidan! Hey bro it’s an awesome place to start, and by you just commenting on this, already tells me you set yourself apart from students your age. I would personally look into pre-req classes as soon as you can. Just start with a little at a time, instead of cramming it. And make sure your GPA stays high the whole way. It’s worth studying for the exam and getting good grades. As for a major... kinesiology is a great one! But also not required for dpt school. You can be any major you want!! Hope that helps and thanks for dropping by!
Freshmen year in college... I actually was an athletic training major at university of the pacific for a semester. I dropped out after a semester because I didn’t like what I was studying and I didn’t like the environment of the school. I think ATC, is a great profession, but I don’t think they have enough education from school to proper rehab someone, although they say they can. I believe they are effective with acute injuries and the ability to return an athlete to sport from an acute injury, but not from a chronic or more long term injury. However, if they have the proper experience and additional eduction, they could also be great at rehab - I know some ATCs who are great. But I think sometimes they overstep their boundaries and promise proper rehab without proper self education
GuidetteExpert if your high school has kinesiology, physiology, exercise science, psychology, or communication. Those are all great classes to get started with early!
So if I want to be a physical therapist what do I major in? Biology? Psychology? My school gives out pseo classes where I can take college classes full time even though I'm a high school student. I'm doing pseo to get my generals done so I won't have to be in college longer than I'll have to be. Do you think this will work? After I graduate from high school and move on to college do I go straight to pre-med?
Aries I think taking college courses early in high school is legit and a very smart way to approach this, especially if you’re looking to save some money. As far as the major in concerned, you don’t have to be a specific major in order to get into dpt school, but I always recommend kinesiology to students. I talking about that in this video: TOP 5 MAJORS FOR DPT SCHOOL th-cam.com/video/i_ImLMjK2RY/w-d-xo.html but I would say also look at the prerequisites on what that school is requiring so you can plan right in college. Let me know if you need a video on that!
Hey man! Where do you go to school at? Are you close to campus? I’m looking at schools, there are hybrid options so online would be good, but if on campus how close are you? If you’re further away how do you manage that with lifting? I’m also very big into it too lol.
Whats up tony!! Great questions. So I go to school at azusa pacific university in azusa, CA. I live about 5-10 miles away so my commute wasnt that bad. Even after I got married, I lived close to campus. There are students that live 40+ miles away and still manage to be successful, but..... they dont seem to exercise daily. I think since my commute time is short, I am able to utilize that time to get my lifts in, so that really helps! But it is honestly whatever you're able to fit into your schedule. I think if i lived 40+ miles away, I would still be able to get my lifts in - priorities right? haha What year are you? Where are you at in your PT journey?
I am currently pursuing a 2 year degree in exercise science, and I want to eventually pursue a career as an athletic trainer/personal trainer, PT, PTA, occupational therapist, and really struggling to figure which of these types of jobs I want to pursue, and how different they are from each other, and the difference in schooling, cost, potencial salary, job security, etc.. Honestly if I could make a career out of it, I think i would prefer athletic/personal training, at least from what I think it is.. but if i am pursuing that, should I even be going to school? Or should I try to just get a job at a gym?
I remember being in the same spot as you!!! All great questions and great things to be thinking about. Honestly.... I would pursue where your passion lies. I do personal training on the side, and I was able to generate pretty good income (i had to turn down clients because of the hectic schedule in DPT school). Through this, i realized how much money I was making and how I really didnt need a higher education degree to pursue that kind of money. All you really need is a certification and you good!! But... I realized that my passion also is in rehab, along with wellness/strengthening. So i encourage you to ask yourself what you really want and then do more research on that
Only B and higher are allowed for PT school. You’re right. You can only get 2 C’s before dismissal from the program. Most programs are like this, but other programs can be different too
@liftforchange I am currently 16 years old and I attend a community college through my high school so when I graduate I will basically have an associates degree. I am interested in becoming a PT. I job shadowing a few days ago and it is definitely for me! I plan on going to East Carolina University for exercise physiology... is that a good path for my undergraduate ? Also, is it financially worth it to become a PT (I know schooling is expensive).
Landon Boeshore daaang good for you! You’re so ahead! I respect that you’re planning out the next several years of your life already, at such a young age. I think that’s a great major. Have you seen my video on best majors for PT? th-cam.com/video/i_ImLMjK2RY/w-d-xo.html also financially... mmmm it’s actually not as worth the finances because PT’s don’t get paid as much. I’ll be making a video on this topic
liftforchange okay thank you! The man that I job shadowed said that is was and he makes six figures a year. He also just bought a 5000 square foot home with 14 acres. I’m not sure if he just got lucky though. Thank you!
Hey I’m applying to DPT next fall (assuming I get accepted). Just wondering how do your weekends look with the program? Are you studying like all day/night and wake up early to get ahead like medical school or do you have time to hangout with like friends, relax and do things I might enjoy in undergrad on my weekends? Thank you for the very informative video tho!!!
Josh Falbo hey josh congrats on getting ready to apply! You’re almost set and ready!!! That’s a great question man. I actually made a short video on that topic (can you have fun in DPT school? th-cam.com/video/aLXlwh-EiYA/w-d-xo.html) but honestly it depends on how you study and how you prioritize things. Dpt school is forsure difficult and demanda a lot from you. But if you’re able to manage your time where you’re not wasting it with Netflix or unproductive things, then yeah you’ll have a lot of time! I was able to really nail that skill throughout dpt school, which is why I was able to still work part time, hangout with my fiancé during every weekend, and never miss a week of working out. But of course everything had its sacrifices too. Since I was prioritizing those things, I didn’t have too much time to hangout every time my classmates did something. I mean I wasn’t a lone wolf, but I wasn’t at every social gathering either. It’s the path that I chose and decided what to prioritize. Do you prioritize social gatherings? Exercise? Traveling? Your relationship? Things to consider!
Usually programs that are in the process of getting accredited get it, but there is always a chance it won’t... Personally for me, that is too much of a risk and I would not do it but if it is an option for you then I would go for it!
Aharon Garrel I think a gap year is absolutely a great idea. Sometimes students get into school without a break from undergrad and it could increase their chances of burning out. I also think there is a level of maturity that needs to be in place prior to getting into dpt school (for better success, learning maturity, discipline, and more). I also am a believer of that too because personally I took a break from school from 18-22 years old. And it wasn’t until then when I knew I wanted to do PT. if it wasn’t for that break, I wouldn’t have known/been so passionate about it!
Glendale!! That’s not too far out. You know you could ask to sit in at APU’s classes to see if it’s a good fit for you. I would highly recommend you do this. And no problem! Happy to help and listen!! Any specific questions you want answered regarding pt internship?
I’m actually at Fyzical in Maryland. I recently started there. So, I would like to know what the most important part of a pt internship is such as patient interaction, the exercises/stretches, etc. Also, what questions should I be asking to get the most out of my time especially since my internship is unpaid. Thanks!
Joann Wu oh shoot! Well hello to Maryland! You’re way on the other side of the country. Those are are solid questions man. I will definitely be doing a video to help you understand more. I think it will help clarify some things and give structure to what you’re observing! But overall, great job on taking initiative to be focused on your future. Also, my best advise would be to understand therapeutic exercise. 1. What is the point of selecting this specific exercise? 2. What is the exercise doing (stretching, strengthening, joint mobility, etc)? 3. How does that help the patient. Those three questions are good to ask your PT when you have a chance. Start there and let me know!! Thanks for your input!
Rebecca _ In the United States, high school courses do not matter (but they matter to get into a good university) The courses that matter are the ones you take in college. So no, high school chemistry, bio, or PE is not necessary to be a Physio, but college chem and bio are necessary
Hey how's it going! First off thanks for making this video, learned a lot from it. I'm currently in the Marine Corps Infantry and I only have 5 months until I get out. I'm planning on going to school in fall of 2020 and trying to become a physical therapy! What degree should I get for my B.S.? Thanks man!
Jake Moore hey Jake! I’m glad you learned a lot from this!!! Dude congrats, you’re almost out dude. Have you seen my other prePT videos? You should check out the playlist, I think you’ll find a lot of value from those videos. But to answer your question about the best major, I made a video on that here: th-cam.com/video/i_ImLMjK2RY/w-d-xo.html
Hello! I am a senior in high school and I’ve been thinking what career I want, I know I wanted something in the medical field but there is so many to chose! After watching your videos, i really feel interested in PT! I have many questions 😭 My top schools are UCLA and USC and I wonder if I can go to those schools to pursue the career for PT?
It depends on your clinic and where you work. Some places are like "mills" and dont have a lot of time for patient interaction (about 20 minutes), but some places allow up to an hour with one and one treatment. I think that is something you should think about when looking for jobs as an emerging PT. It is for sure within our scope of practice to have discussions about nutrition, vitamins, weight loss, etc, but it is past our scope to prescribe or mandate patient to take a certain vitamin, or follow a meal plan, etc
@@drjustinleedpt I agree....And originally I was interested in chiropractic but would have to relocate hundreds of miles away for school and I have a family plus the pay is like 50- 60k unless you own your own practice...and they spend sometimes 45 sec to 5 min not all but most of them on patients....
Jeff Meisner yeah.... you don’t want to do chiro... it’s a dying profession. Everyone is realizing that PT is what is necessary to help alleviate any kind of body pain instead of chiro. Just saying.... it’s still a GROWING profession and the quality of life is great!!
@@drjustinleedpt and my age 48 thou when I would graduate? And anything else I can do to increase my chances of getting accepted? What did you do and I'm curious why you chose PT? Any negatives about PT that you don't like?
@@jeffmeisner8976 It would take 3 years from the time you enter the program. Have you seen this video on HOW TO STAND OUT? th-cam.com/video/pkq9rtoA_xc/w-d-xo.html Thats a very informational vid that I think you would be interested in. I chose PT because it was a way for me to impact a greater amount of people than just as a personal trainer. I wanted to target a larger audience with the importance of exercise and movement - i felt very limited as a personal trainer. Negatives.... the salary isnt as high as you would expect. Probably a range of 70-80k for first year PT. Also there is a lot of paperwork/legal issues since we are one of the only professions that actually physically touches patients. You could imagine how it could get messy if you're not careful
What if I want to go to PT school but I slacked my first 2 years of college and have below a 3.0? Do I still have a chance? Also, what if I want to get a degree in something non-science- in my case, Spanish, something I’m passionate in. I’d really appreciate some advice!
Hey Chris!! Thanks for commenting and dropping by, Typically, most DPT programs will consider your application if you meet the minimum requirements, which includes a 3.0 GPA. So my best guess is that if you're below a 3.0, your chances might be a bit harder to get considered. I would recommend trying to make up/retake courses that are bringing down your GPA. Ultimately, the schools want to know if you're able to handle a doctorate academic load - and your GPA is the best predictor of that. You know what Im saying? Doesnt mean its a lost cause, but it might be a good idea to boost up that GPA. To answre your other question, I think it's great that you have a non-science major! Make your unique and versatile. If you're able to take the pre-reqs and perform well in them (pre-req GPA), then i think it puts you at an advantage. That being said, do not hope to use your non-science major as the biggest leverage you have to get into DPT school. The overall and pre-req GPA are going to be weighed the most. Personally, I do not regret my undergrad kinesiology major, but I do wish I took another non-science major/minor like communication or spanish! Lots of spanish speakers in CA haha Let me know if that that helps! Shoot more questions if you got em (:
Hey! Reading this really made my day. I'm a Spanish major and I plan on applying to PT school too! I know most PT schools say there's no specific major required, but I felt like most people had science majors. I saw his reply to you so now I know I'm good. I'm doing Spanish because I wanna become fluent in the language so I can use it in my profession and its a really flexible major so all I have to focus on is Spanish and the pre reqs for PT.
Hi!! Im planning to apply to a PTA program this spring for the upcoming fall. I was in nursing school but withdrew to pursue this instead. As apart of my application process, i have to interview.. IF* you had to interview for DPT school as well, do you mind posting a video on tips and advice for the interview? to impress the admissions committee and say the right things? im currently a senior in college, just late changing my major.
What up Shelby! YESSSS WELCOME TO THE GOOD SIDE! haha jkjk Nursing is great, but honestly I FREAKEN LOVE THIS PROFESSION. It is really so awesome and so rewarding on a daily basis. Talking about a good quality of life. Have you seen my video on TIPS TO STAND OUT AS A PT APPLICANT? th-cam.com/video/pkq9rtoA_xc/w-d-xo.html I think you would find tips in that video pretty darn helpful. As far as specifically interviewing goes, I am working on getting a video on that topic out soon. It will come, but I got a lot of requests on the waitlist haha Im proud of you for making that decision to switch over. It's not easy, especially in your position, but I know you made the right choice. I dropped out of college and started back up again as a sophomore as a 22 year old. Not sure how old you are, but it took me several years to figure out that this is what I wanted to do. Since then, I run down this path with so much joy every single day! And i know you will too!!!
Madilyn Conner great question! Have you seen this video on how to make money as a DPT student? Definitely transferable to undergrad as well th-cam.com/video/7fgsltsHPVk/w-d-xo.html Loans are hefty. It’s a lot. I plan to work full time, utilize online platforms to generate income (affiliate links, TH-cam, online personal training, online courses), and to live within my means. All those will help!! Speaking of, if you’re interested in an online course I’m coming out with called “Everything You Need to Know to Get Accepted Into DPT School,” then leave your email here and I’ll add it to the pre sale list!! It’s coming out soon!!!
I came across your channel very informative. I am 40 years old and graduated in 2002 ( Business Administration). I want to know what is the right direction to go to pursue my ultimate dream. Any recommendations on schools that is not too expensive? And what I need to do since my degree is not align with Dpt? Thanks
Christian Calderon that’s a legit thought Christian. I see you at where you are at in your age and I know this next course in life has to be the right one. I think you should ask yourself if PT is something you would want to pursue for the rest of your life. However, as much as I would want you to get into this profession, it’s honestly a lot of money for school. Even if you go to a public school like cal state Long Beach or northridge, it’s still pricey and you’re looking at about 100k in debt. That’s a lot of mooooola. So you should consider that. Not to mention the pre-reqs you will have to take. We have different and unrelated majors in the program too like business and biology. So it doesn’t matter what your undergrad is, as long as you have the right pre-reqs and a good gpa. I would recommend thinking about these things and then doing some more research h on how you can get accepted into dpt school in the quickest way. Watch this video, it may help you out! th-cam.com/video/9zAhsxC2eug/w-d-xo.html
That’s an excellent question! If there is a PT track for community college, it’s usually either for a PT ASSISTANT or for you getting on track to get to undergrad and finish up with your prerequisites, the. DPT school
Yeah bro of course I can. But i wanted to ask you to clarify a little bit more on history taking and digging deep. Could you elaborate? Im def interested in making a video on that
liftforchange what I mean is how to get get past just the surface level medical/MOI information gathering, and into more of the emotions and goals so that we can understand the patient on a deeper level ensure compliance and buy-in to the treatment plan...I’m that you as a personal trainer and successful entrepreneur have developed these soft skills, and I’m interested in your input!
Thanks my man! That’s a really good topic bro! Let me organize my thoughts and see if I can put it into a video!! It’s hard to put into words, so I will see what I can doooooo! Thanks a bunch for your request! I think this one will be a good one! Keep the requests coming as you see more vids (:
be honest bro can you make good money from this? my goal is to make 100k a year. i’m currently a sophomore at sdsu and i have started to take some of the pre requisites but haven’t officially declared as a kinesiology pre-physical therapy major. i workout a lot including powerlifting bodybuilding, i love sports, i’m even a 2nd dan black belt in taekwondo. so out of all the majors this one by far makes the most sense for me and interests me the most. do you think this is a good fit for me and if so what area do you think i should focus on after dpt school? btw by residency and fellowship you’re referring to medical school right? thanks
What's up Kevin! Bro, im nothing but honest here! No BS in any way, unless BS refers to bachelors in science! lol... k that was dumb. Anyway, the pay when you work as a PT isnt the best. Starting off you get about 75-80k, but you can work your way up to 100k+ - of course it depends on where/what setting you're working at. Some locations like hospital (kaiser) or settings (inpatient/Skilled nursing facility, etc) will offer you more. Its actually kinda funny because on the first day of my DPT school, my professor said that the investment you put into DPT school isnt the most profitable. But you're here because you're in it to help others and you have a love for others, rather than for the money. So there is that.... HOWEVER, there are many ways you could make additional income to get you over 100k+. especailly considering your background, you could always offer additional services to your private clients or create online programming for powerlifting/tae kwon do, or even do personal training on the side - all of which i have been doing throughout DPT school (helped me create some income and still had flexibility to be a student). It all honestly depends on how you want to approach it. i like your passion man and like your drive to attaining big goals. Thats going to take you really far! Keep on going my man!!! I have no doubt that you're going to make 100k. if you want, we could brainstorm more. Of course, im bias, but learning kinesiology as my undergrad not only thrusted my learning in DPT school, but it even helped my gym workouts too. knowledge is power bro. Hope this helped!
Also, residency and fellowship is also for physical therapy. its NOT required to work as a PT, but it only helps you become a better clinician and usually a bump in salary
Nope! By the time you graduate, you will be prepared to work in any setting as a physical therapist. However, you can choose where you want to focus on. So you do not need to specialize after graduating DPT school
I want to be your physical therapy aid from the distance Am a Nigerian leaving in Nigeria I went to national institute of sports Lagos With little knowledge of anatomy and physiology, perceive stretches Range of motion etc Please help me to help my people Your in sports Mahmud onu musa
I wish we could make that happen. That would be super fun and cool to have you as an aide in the distance. I am planning on having a whole video series on the science of kinesiology and physical therapy. I think you will enjoy that a lot!!
pork belly you definitely can! Have you seen my video on making money as a DPT student? If not, you should check it out! You’ll love it. I worked part time throughout the entire 3 years (minus 6 months when it was super intense)
hey lee currently i’m serving in the military and started a associates in criminal justice how hard would the process be applying if i finished that degree first and applied afterwards for it? do you think it would help my chances ?
Kyle Hawley well, you MUST have a bachelors in order to apply to school. Having an AA could help, but it wouldn’t make you like BAM STAND OUT you know? But it could def help you look different
Kyle Hawley hi military spouse here! I’m a nurse applying to PT programs. I know that Baylor university in Texas is heavily associated with the army if you’re in that branch so maybe do some research for that school? I’m most certain you’re going to need a bachelor in science whether it be nursing or biology or kinesiology.
Hi, I am a senior in high school and thinking about going into physical therapy after I graduate, but don't know much about it, Can you explain what PT really is?
Hey Rebekah! Thanks for dropping in!! That’s a questions I got asked a couple times so I think I am actually going to make a video on it. Thanks for asking and I can’t wait to drop this video for you!
During all of this schooling , is there a job you can get into like a pta ? Or something relevant with good pay since I am aware pt schooling is long ?
BlazePlays you can’t work as a pta during dpt school because you need a special license for that. Other students have worked several jobs like waiter/waitress, Trader Joe’s, fitness coach, university jobs, etc. As you know I worked as a personal trainer and group fitness coach and it was do-able!
Seth Carl I have workout plans available on my website! Solid workout plan that holds on to lean muscle mass while trying to decrease body fat. Here is the link to the bundle of all 3 phases www.liftforchangelfc.com/workouts/lfc-bundle-12-weeks-all-3-phases
Ashley mendez hey Ashley! Thanks for stopping by. Yes, PTs can definitely specialize in prosthetics. It’s a small niche, but it’s a avenue that is possible. Other small niches could also be wound care and womens health (or pelvic floor) that I didn’t mention
I have always wanted to be a PT but my disadvantage is i didn't finish my high school and also i wasn't doing sciences ....so i decided to go to inroll at a beauty school coz i love doing massages,is it possible for me to study PT?
Why did you observe a knee and wipe poop as a physical therapist? Why would a physical therapist do those two tasks? Is that part of physician therapist/therapy?
That’s a great question. So PT’s do not HAVE TO do both. I wanted to observe a knee operation for experience and for understanding how the procedure works. Because I’ll be seeing a ton of knee replacements. Secondly, we also don’t have to wipe poop either. But it’s something that I decided to do out of kindness. Technically nurses are more in charge of that, but I didn’t want to leave the patient covered in poop for awhile before the nurse came to clean up
ClashOfClans that would be mostly for outpatient sports physical therapy. There are different kinds of PT. It’s separated into 2 categories. Inpatient and outpatient. All inpatient settings are at the hospital. The typical PT setting that most people think of is outpatient. This is where you go to if you sprain your ankle and you need to get some PT. there are many different kind of PT like I listed in this video (peds, Neuro, etc)
Justin Lee do you get to pick inpatient or outpatient? Do you get to pick inpatient or outpatient for the field work in PT school and possibly do the opposite upon graduating and working full time? How does it work?
ClashOfClans in school you are required to go through “clinical rotations” aka internships. Every school sets it up differently. Some schools require you to find your own locations or some schools set it up for you. At APU they set up your rotation sites for you. They require 3 different sites; 1 being inpatient and the other 2 of your choice (like out patient, Neuro, peds, etc). They try to match a clinical location to what you request but it doesn’t always work out that way.. you would have to research how different programs set those rotations up

Oh & volunteer as soon as possible to make sure this is actually the occupation for u!

i really want to be a physical therapist and can’t see myself doing anything else but i’m now intimidated by what the schooling entails 😬 (i’m a sophomore in hs)
I was also confused between psychology and PT and now I am studying physiotherapy! Definitely way harder than I thought 😭

But in school, you learn all the different fields that are possibilities you can enter into (like I listed in my video)
And YES!! I think that topic will be a great one and I will def make a video on that for you nat!
Great video, keep doing more like this

Can you do a video on things that I should observe as a PtA?
Are you trying to bridge to DPT? Or stay as PTA? If you are planning on staying as an PTA, there are some factors you can pay attention to to help your clinical reasoning and skills.
For example, learning to listen in on red flag questions and the process of referring out. Or paying attention to techniques like joint mobilizations, therex, muscle energy technique, etc but these are all things you learned in school too no?
can you please make a video about things to look out for while shadowing.
I have one coming up!
Could you make a video explaining how you balanced being married with school? How’d you manage to work during school?
Bogdan Lakotiy yeah that’s a common question I get! I have other videos in the works, but I’ll definitely be getting to this topic too! 👍

What programs are you looking into? Also what niche are you most interested in?
liftforchange thank you so much brotha. Honestly watching ur vids gives me less anxiety for what’s to come haha
liftforchange So honestly I’m just looking into anywhere that will accept me locally.

TOP MAJORS FOR DPT SCHOOL th-cam.com/video/i_ImLMjK2RY/w-d-xo.html

I wanna go to school for PT, but math is sooo hard !
it is super hard.... but dont get 1 measly math course stop you from achieving greatness!
If it works, then why change it.
also forgot to share, have you seen my video on study habit changes from undergrad to DPT? th-cam.com/video/FPbuomL6V0Y/w-d-xo.html
What was your freshman year like?
Any insight on Athletic training?
Also, if you want more info about my journey after that, comment that and ill be glad to share!

@@drjustinleedpt thank you so much! And yes I will reply back on here if I need a video about that!
@@brandon_isgayyyyy GOOD LUCK!
I think if i lived 40+ miles away, I would still be able to get my lifts in - priorities right? haha
What year are you? Where are you at in your PT journey?
Do you have any workout videos that you made after this?
So i encourage you to ask yourself what you really want and then do more research on that
Does your program allow a C for a letter grade, or do you need Atleast a B and up for all classes? I heard 2 C’s is subject to dismissal?
Thank you!
Landon Boeshore that’s a pretty good life! Likely on the higher end of the spectrum, but you get the picture! Haha
Hey bro one school I’m considering is a new dpt program but it’s not accredited yet but is moving towards it should I go there?
Usually programs that are in the process of getting accredited get it, but there is always a chance it won’t... Personally for me, that is too much of a risk and I would not do it but if it is an option for you then I would go for it!
Do physiotherapist often work with the aging population ? Is that the main source of income ?
MiChiix0 there are a variety of populations that PT work with. But typically you will see is outpatient ortho, neuro, peds, or in patient
hey J. Lee i wanted to hear your thoughts on taking a gap year between undergrad and DPT school. What are your thoughts?
Aharon Garrel I think a gap year is absolutely a great idea. Sometimes students get into school without a break from undergrad and it could increase their chances of burning out. I also think there is a level of maturity that needs to be in place prior to getting into dpt school (for better success, learning maturity, discipline, and more). I also am a believer of that too because personally I took a break from school from 18-22 years old. And it wasn’t until then when I knew I wanted to do PT. if it wasn’t for that break, I wouldn’t have known/been so passionate about it!
@@drjustinleedpt awesome that's a great help !! Thanks for the break I took a break from 18-20 as well
Aharon Garrel I think taking a break is important if you needed. No need to rush into something you’re not 100% about!
Hey, I’m currently a pt intern and want to know some tips on getting the most out of my experience.
Whats up Joann! its good to hear from you! I will definitely be making a video on that. Thank you for your interest! Where do you intern at?
Thank you so much! I intern at Fyzical Therapy and Balance Center.
Do I need chemistry in high school to be a physio therapist I have took Biology and Pe
I'm 17 and want to get in to physical therapy what books do I need to read to prepare .Thanks
Do you feel like PT is rushed - time with patients, can you educate them on vitamins and nutrition that help with movement ?
Hey Chris!! Thanks for commenting and dropping by,
Typically, most DPT programs will consider your application if you meet the minimum requirements, which includes a 3.0 GPA.
Lots of spanish speakers in CA haha
Let me know if that that helps! Shoot more questions if you got em (:
Problematic for sure
benicio rivera you can do it!!!
Here are some tips on STANDING OUT and my thoughts on a non-science major th-cam.com/video/pkq9rtoA_xc/w-d-xo.html

I think you would find tips in that video pretty darn helpful. As far as specifically interviewing goes, I am working on getting a video on that topic out soon. It will come, but I got a lot of requests on the waitlist haha
Im proud of you for making that decision to switch over.
Do PT's have to take the MCAT?
Nope! They do not!
How did you make money while in undergrad and grad school/how did figure out how to pay for it.
Madilyn Conner great question! Have you seen this video on how to make money as a DPT student? Definitely transferable to undergrad as well th-cam.com/video/7fgsltsHPVk/w-d-xo.html

Watch this video, it may help you out! th-cam.com/video/9zAhsxC2eug/w-d-xo.html
if you go to community college for physical therapy, do you still have to go to a actual physical therapy school

be honest bro can you make good money from this? my goal is to make 100k a year. i’m currently a sophomore at sdsu and i have started to take some of the pre requisites but haven’t officially declared as a kinesiology pre-physical therapy major. i workout a lot including powerlifting bodybuilding, i love sports, i’m even a 2nd dan black belt in taekwondo. so out of all the majors this one by far makes the most sense for me and interests me the most. do you think this is a good fit for me and if so what area do you think i should focus on after dpt school? btw by residency and fellowship you’re referring to medical school right?
Also, residency and fellowship is also for physical therapy. its NOT required to work as a PT, but it only helps you become a better clinician and usually a bump in salary
liftforchange alright for sure bro, appreciate the response

Can a pt specialize in prosthetic rehab?
Ashley mendez hey Ashley! Thanks for stopping by. Yes, PTs can definitely specialize in prosthetics. It’s a small niche, but it’s a avenue that is possible. Other small niches could also be wound care and womens health (or pelvic floor) that I didn’t mention

Technically nurses are more in charge of that, but I didn’t want to leave the patient covered in poop for awhile before the nurse came to clean up
liftforchange don’t physical therapist work in like a 5000 plus square feet facility helping athletes and dancers etc instead of the hospital?
