    I remember, back in the days, when human sized bosses spelled trouble because they were usually faster and more relentless. In Elden Ring, almost every boss, even if they're massive, feel like the human sized bosses of previous games.

      @joshjonson2368 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Alot aren't that fast but what makes them difficult is the fact they have no wind-up to their combos, so they'd keep on going indefinitely and give no actual windows of opportunity for any weapon that's isn't a dagger ss or katana

      In most story driven RPG games there's always one boss that is based off of being fast. Speed is their shtick.

    Biggest tip is upgrade your vigor! The leveling system goes much farther than previous souls games, therefore the bosses you are fighting are going to be doing more damage later in the game. A lot of people that are having problems with the later bosses, can probably be largely contributed to the fact that there vigor/Health bar isn’t comparable and they are getting taken out within a few shots

    You're review was what made me finally play the game. This is my first souls game. The "rune farming" helped me feel as if, oh hey If this gets too hard, then I atleast have a way to help me get better. and the way you talk about the world building is what made me finally take a chance. Man, this game is just absolutely insane. So enthralling. So much to do, so much to explore. I was SO tired of open world games. My first was Oblivion back when I was a kid, and man, it was just so cool and made me feel like I was actually on an adventure, I have never ever been able to get that same feeling of wonder and joy from a game since that first one, not even from Skyrim. This game makes me feel like a kid again, in the best way. The only thing that bothers me is the quest thing, and I totally agree with you, some notes would help a lot haha

    Totally agree with your take on the last few story bosses. Was a slightly disappointing ending to such an amazing game.
    I think the pacing criticism is hard to make given the massive scale of the Open World they've taken on here. I think difficulty spikes must be incredibly difficult to avoid given it is very hard for them to judge how much of the side content people will engage with. I'd rather they have spikes and encourage people to go back and explore rather than have you feel overlevelled each time you reach a new area.

      Would love a side video on your boss thoughts. I just 100%ed the game and am admittedly a from fan boy. I love how you confidently said the game is worth the price but gave honest criticism. The performance issues suck, can definitely have a drastic impact on the experience.
      I think some parts of the game are hard but not I’m a satisfying way. I feel like some of the OP stuff is nice to offset stuff. At the end of the day it’s a single player game so if someone wants to cheese it, more power to them. I definitely cheesed (rip hoarfrost stomp) some stuff that was frustrating and it made the game so much better that I could just get past stuff that wasnt fun.
      Thanks for the vid, nice to see content outside of crpg (even though I love the crpg content too)

    • @spectersmusic
      @spectersmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I mean From could have not made it so massive and fine tuned the experience. Honestly I think the pacing was horrible especially because of the low rune amounts from most enemies. It is the only From game I felt any need to grind much less actively spent hours grinding. 100%ed it as well and I felt grinding about 30 hours saved me 100 hours easily.

    • @khanager2814
      @khanager2814 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@spectersmusic Don't really agree with you there. While I did have to go out of my way to visit all the bosses throughout to level up enough, the only time I spent grinding was an hour or two on that hill near Mohg, and that was only because I killed one of those dudes and realised they drop like 10k each hahahah. Maybe they could give you a few more runes for each boss but I thought the difficulty progressed fairly well. My only real issue was with boss design, and I think that mainly comes down to having to balance bosses for very powerful Summons.

    • @spectersmusic
      @spectersmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@khanager2814 I didn’t say you spent time grinding I spent time grinding. And it was because of the repetition of that “side content” that made it so unfulfilling unlike their previous games. Would it be fun to complete 100 nearly identical catacombs, ruins, caves, enemy encampments to fight repeat bosses just to get levels to then do the “main route” that I actually want to do? For me not at all. They could have made less “side content” so it wasn’t as repetitive and slightly increased the rune output to make it possible to not have to do side content if you really don’t want it (sort of why it is considered side content). But they didn’t, the side content is just as much required to get the levels necessary to have a somewhat fair fight. Also if you didn’t do a straight Str or Dex build you most likely didn’t put enough into Vigor so it is even more of a disadvantage based on your build. That feels like From purposefully made it low runes and enemies high health and damage to make you spend more time in the game. You know something people accuse companies like EA and Ubisoft of doing. Inflate difficulty and demise rewards to “increase engagement”, but they’re usually selling boosters to get passed it while From is saying they just really want more of your time.
      The design of the game wasn’t rewarding enough to play “as intended” because there was an obviously easier and faster way that achieves the same thing. I grinded for a couple hours in Caelid I could do all the content up to the capital at a breeze. Grind a couple hours near Fia and I could do nearly everything no problem and then, like you, near Mohg and you can level to your hearts content extremely easy.
      I do agree about bosses but again what you’re saying is about balance. There isn’t a clear balance to areas or bosses. You can be so severally under leveled for one boss in an area and not for the others but the second you get maybe 2 or 3 levels over the “intended” level you can breeze right through them. Even if they just put the levels of the bosses and enemies like a Xenoblade Chronicles then they could have given players the option to at least know where they should be to have the From intended fight.

Some of them are really great and memorable but too many are either straight out of Bloodborne/Sekiro in terms of aggression and heal punishing or gimmicky. Imo many of the main bosses are better designed than all of their previous work. My problem with DS3 was that mechanically it was fun (although very straightforward) to play but the bosses themselves were kinda lacking in character and memorability. All main bosses in Elden Ring are built up by the area before them. As long as you explore the world, you'll see for yourself how exactly each demigod impacted the world with their actions and power. You see how much damage Malenia did to Caelid, you see the crucified Tarnished just out of the stranded graveyard the player first walks out from (I think it's implied this was done by Godrick to scare off any pretenders), you see Rykard's distorted ambition in his followers, Mogh's possessiveness on his entire mausoleum, Radahn's sheer power and courage and the admiration it brought from everyone that dares call themselves a warrior. Their movesets and AI also mostly improved. Many times throughout the game I feel like when I'm reading a boss, I'm also being read back. This feeling was mostly absent from their previous games, except in some parts of Sekiro. For me those bosses are just as memorable than From's previous heavy hitters like Artorias and Ludwig, and more challenging to fight.

I think DS3's bossfights can be comparable to a rythm game, while Elden Ring's are more akin to a strategy game. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but I prefer Elden Ring's approach, simply because I feel like I'm outmatched and feel like I'm actually slaying godlike beings that are most of the time close to their prime. Disagree on the subject of them not pushing gameplay mechanics there’s a lot of nuance to the combat in this game it’s not the R1 spam of the past some enemies you can stagger lock with jumping attacks some enemies leave small openings but you can keep their posture bar from going back up by using ranged or thrown weapons then heavy attacking in their openings. Strongly agree at the last part, as much as I love this game there are A LOT of questionable enemy and boss designs that don’t fit the gameplay, it’s like they amped up the speed, damage and aggressiveness of some enemies but kept the player at the same speed, unlike how Bloodborne and Sekiro handled these enemies.

  • @ZakEmber
    @ZakEmber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Great review! My two cents: I think everyone agrees that magic is super strong under the right circumstances. My thoughts though are that I found many creatures and some bosses who were very resistant to particular spells I had, while others might be completely vulnerable and a total sitting duck. Along with that, I think the fact that you have find a lot of the best spells before you can use them and they can't be upgraded is a balancing tool. Well, that, and you have to sacrifice health flasks for more mana flasks if you plan on using a lot of magic as your primary damage dealer. If you get the spell early and can meet the requirements, yes, you'll devastate a boss in the earlier game or a boss vulnerable to it, but you do have to find that spell first, which could be in a dangerous zone, a faction/questline reward, or behind some very tough boss fights. And since you may have to sacrifice from your pool of resources to give more towards spells, I think that offsets how strong they are pretty well. In the right situations, magic is absolutely brutal, but as a magic user in this game, I found it was also a crutch that prevented me from 'getting good', and then having a real uphill battle against bosses that were made to counter my magic.
    Seriously though, you have my utmost respect! I'm 67 hours in and still taking my time through the game, I'm always impressed that you do 100% before making a review! It lends a lot of credence to your evaluations and I like watching your reviews for that reason!

      @@dakota9821 Totally. Though sometimes, it's just better to switch to a different tactic. Using the Carian Blade spells to stagger/stun, or breaking the opponent's guard with a heavy attack and a good weapon. For elemental damage, though, I've found that I might need to mix it up with some of the faith spells, or craft some special elemental consumables. Most of the time, Night Comet works wonders, and when it doesn't, my newest spell, Comet Azur, is like a magical Kamehameha wave. I just find that the game does a good job making sure you can't use the same two or three tactics all the time. I think that helps balance out magic as a system in the game, too.

Think Pathfinder with it's hundreds of spells, many situational. This game just had me spam the same spell over and over again. I might not been so harsh on it, if not for playing Skyrim VR, with a insane amount of mods to improve magic. The power fantasy of Skyrim VR vs Elden Ring cannot be compared. So one thing about quest logs, I feel like if there was one, there'd have to be a very very delicate balance to it, as to me a lot of the characters in the world are less questlines and more puzzles to solve. Some characters go out of their way to lie to you or obfuscate information, and unfurling that mystery is always very fun to me. Really enlightening and sober review. I definitely understand the gripes with the late game here, and I know a lot of other people also feel that the difficulty spike there held back the experience to a degree. I have to say though, for me, it was actually refreshing. The first time I heard this criticism was a from a friend who had just beaten the game. He was noticeably angered over it, and I was able to relate to the difficulty sentiment but not the reaction.
    Dark Souls trained me to expect everything to be avoidable by memorizing a handful of boss animations and then roll-dodging them all. In contrast, there were times in this game that I rethought my entire approach, sometimes multiple times for one fight. The damage on getting hit often felt a bit crazy to me at the end too, but for me it just means I have something still to contend with on later playthroughs, whereas I don't think there are more than 1 or 2 bosses in Dark Sous 3 that would feel like more than a formality for me now. That's really not bragging either - most bosses in that game just aren't that difficult once you've beaten them a couple of times.
    In short, loved getting my ass kicked in this game. Many fights could probably be more fun if the damage was toned down, but I'm loving every bit of it either way at this point.

    I completely agree with you (again). The world building is incredible. I play as melee only (with the mandatory summons) and the game is really rough. But I knew that magic has always been massively overpowered, so I don't mind that a lot. It's just the way I play these games.
    Going in blind the difficulty walls are really annoying though. I wasted way too much time (8+ hours) on trying to clear Caelid without even having fought Margit. It was really frustrating and I almost uninstalled at that point.

    It took me 72 hours and 36 minutes to beat the game. I had a blast playing through this, for about 55 hours, and a huge reason for it is that I think I some how managed to do the "intended" order of progression.
    Every area was grueling but doable. I had to be slow and methodical. I never grinded either. Never felt overpowered (well.....other than like 3 hours after getting a certain katana) and never felt under leveled. It was fucking brilliant and I was so happy with my time spent in the game. And then I reached the endgame zones.
    Fuck that shit. It's awful. It went from feeling like everything makes sense as to why it killed me or why I killed it, to one mistake and I'm combo'd to death and I need to use half of my resources to kill one non-trash enemy.
    It made me stop caring. I didn't care if I lost souls, I didn't care if I died, I just started rushing through areas. Bosses went from "oh shit here we go" to "thank fucking god, some respite from the mobs".
    I ended up really hating the controls by the end. The whole you don't roll when you press the button, you roll when you let go of it. The amount of times my weapon art/skill just didn't go off was infuriating. Having to press X 3-4 times before my guy finally decided to drink a potion. It's awful and I won't be playing another fromsoft game if they keep doing it.
    After beating the game and ending up at lvl 152, I respecced, put 90 points into dex, the rest of the stats were distributed to what I felt like was necessary and I went and spammed the "hand of malenia's" weapon art in pvp for 3 hours. Just letting out my frustration on random people. The full combo deals like 6k damage and it's very hard to dodge it was great.

If you're playing online look at the messages on the floor, while a lot of them are "try finger but hole" a lot of them are also helpful and warn about ambushes and such. And finally, the tree sentinels weapon, if you keep upgrading it, will oneshot quite a lot of mobs for a very long time.

Some are extraordinarily easy, especially when using spirit summons, and a handfull are just unbelievably punishing. If every boss was difficult, then the game could easily be unplayably long for many people, but the huge, occasional difficulty (or frustration) spikes feel like they come out of nowhere.

      The big issue for me is that the frustrating bosses are all difficult for the wrong reasons. Gank fights, spammy aoes, visual clutter, and bad tells for melee characters who have their camera up the bosses ass since a lot of the bosses are so giant. In general I think they prioritize difficulty and spectacle over good design and fun. I never felt bad about using summons, because most of these fights are just downright not fun, and I’d rather get back to exploring.

    Your channel is really refreshing compared to the usual AAA marketing and mainstream stuff that is out there. It helps that we seem to enjoy the same types of games although I wish you reviewed some more games that have narrative experiences like Sinking City, and some of frogwares offerings. I really enjoy Elex 2 so far because it's not a crpg and is more up to par as far as mainstream graphics but still holds true to some of the older staples. Also bought Cyberpunk this year and was left disapointed. Gamedec is a game you reviewed and I'm glad you did because I wish there were more games like this that had bigger budgets and combined combat sequences with a true narrative and detective type work. They don't seem to exist. Alpha Protocol is probably the closest game I've found. LA Noire didn't really cut it. I grew up playing a lot of classic rpgs and narrative style point and click adventure games and the AAA space is really ruining gaming for me.

I've collected about 75% of the melee weapons and then I just have to finish collecting all the armor sets (minus leggings, I have all of those as well) and I'm still just as addicted to the game as the day it released lol. Really hit the nail on the head with the difficulty of some of those later bosses. 95% of the boss fights provide an enjoyable challenge that were incredibly satisfying to overcome. The final handful of bosses were frustrating and resulted in me relying on using a broken summon and spamming my OP weapon art, where previously I was finding the sweetspot in typical melee combat with the occasional weapon art when needed. Spamming Moonveils L2+R2 wasn't fun but if I wanted to do meaningful damage to ridiculous health bars then that was the optimal strategy. Beating Melina on my second try didn't feel rewarding as my first attempt was summonless and her frustrating mechanic made my slow melee strategy redundant. 100 hours in and completed that game, loved the vast majority of it but am saddened by the fact that the final few fights didn't bring that same joy that Gael or Isshin did but rather was a focus on just beating the bosses without relying on the skillset I developed along the way but rather relying on a broken build out of neccesity. Still would say the game was worth the time invested and would easily give it a 9/10 but some of the shortcomings in the final legs of the game dampened what was otherwise one of my favourite games ever.

    • @ohexenwahno5652
      @ohexenwahno5652 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well said. I might add that, not just bosses, but also enemies feel like they deal way too much damage in the late game. I invested 50 points in vigor and I still feel squishy. With that much investment, I should feel a lot more tanky. I can't imagine what it would feel like to be at 25-30 vigor. That's also probably because of such high damage that players rely on cheesy mage builds, so that they can deal massive damage from a distance.

      @issue15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Speaking my language, I’m approaching the end game, going around and tying up loose ends. I’ve been rocking moonveil since the third day after release. I started prisoner and spec’d deep into int and dex, which is generally not a combo I normally rock but was liking using spells from a distance when needed. Once I got moonveil to +10 and using talismans that restored fp I felt unstoppable. It felt cheap to use the broken L2+R2, but also it worked! Stun locking pretty much everything in 2-3 hits! (1-2 with Alexander’s talismans equipped it seems.) It felt cheesy but when I did malenia today it felt justified, her flurry attack just feels straight up broken, no amount of dodging helped. Didn’t test parrying since I haven’t rocked a shield once this whole game. But yeah idk game is an absolute masterpiece it seems hard to balance the torrent (pun intended) of weapons, weapon arts you can apply, magic, everything in between. I think they did a fantastic job! Tbh I’m giving this a 11/10 for the sheer magnitude of the zones, combat aside.

    Elden Ring, for the most part, frontloads it’s content. I was enamored by its first 50 hours, and wanted to go back to the beginning for the last 30. The late game scaling, which essentially doesn’t allow the player to have less than 50 vigor and decent armor at which point you will still get 3 shot by most of the trash mobs, combined with increasingly poor level design in the later areas and some head scratching bosses really left a bitter taste in my mouth upon my first completion. The game deserves the praise it’s getting for its world building and atmosphere, but in large part I think these opinions are heavily skewed by the fact that most people haven’t, and likely never will, actually finish the game. I appreciate an honest review from someone who’s done their homework. Keep it up.

      @D. it has absolutely nothing to do with anyone insisting that other people play the game the way that they play. It has everything to do with From Software’s design philosophy and style. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but that doesn’t make it wrong or poorly designed. They do not nor have they ever held the player’s hand. If people want a check-list and paint by numbers experience with difficulty options then there are PLENTY of open world games developed by Ubisoft and other companies who follow that same exact and very stale design mentality. Not every game needs a quest log, not every game needs difficulty options, and not every game needs to constantly guide the player along from point A to point B. It really is that simple.

  • @MrSarakash

    I kind off feel glad that I am not alone with this assesment. The later bosses are unfun to play against, emphazise on fun. I loved fights like Gael or Orphan of Kos, however the amount of BS later bosses throw at you is not engaging, it just makes you wait longer for a window of opportunity. The last boss is a good example, but not because he is the hardest.
    So, the boss is at range, throws projectile after projectile at you, then you have to dodge through a sweep with a giant hitbox just to see him teleport or fly away the moment you take your first swing. So back to running towards him again, dodging through stuff hoping the boss has the courtesy to stay this time at least long enough for you to get a hit in.
    And if you are using a slower weapon, there are even less opportunities. And don´t even get me started with a certain secret boss. If the word "flurry" triggers PTSD, you know who I mean. This boss sucked my enthusiasm right out of me to a point where I just wanted the game to be over. And this never happended to me in previous From games.
    It is amazing how they failed to hit the mark after they pretty much nailed it in Sekiro regarding the fluidity of the fights.

And I just don't believe it is a bad thing to refine over innovate, but that's just like my opinion or whatever. I do think there are some bosses with cheap moves, and those tend to hurt players who habitually use lock on. If I could do one thing it's teach every player how to free attack properly, but that is also dependent on weapon types. Overall though another great review, thoughtful and considered as always.

That time of system I feel doesn't take away from the hardcore aspect. Although as argument for their system or lack of system part of the fun for me was figuring out what to even do very much like detective style. Part of the fun to was the consequence of failing a quest. I know that is annoying for people but that is the kind of thing that gives each play through a unique spin. Godskin duo was pretty terrible, and elden beast had so much visual clutter I resorted to summons (I was playing melee), although apparently not mandatory if you do rannis questline first the crucible night + beast master made me want to tear my hair out, and all of the bosses where they chuck two random enemies in the arena and expect you to run around in circles for 10 minutes to find your one window to hit

      @@cronotriggered4314 Or try using your spirits or a summon. If they want to add 2 bosses, then they get to fight 2 players (or player/spirit if you will). I forget which spirit I mainly use, but its the one that dual-wields some GS's. Man is a tank and lets me spam rock sling against these 2v1 bs bosses.

      @@dakota9821 I have a +10 mimic slime, but he’s so busted he trivializes every fight in the game. Dude can tank a million hits, rolls through attacks, heals, and uses items in your hot bar. He also mimics your weapons so if you’re using bleed he’ll stack that as well. I’ve stopped using him because I can basically afk and watch the boss die. But even excluding this specific summon, I think summons in genera are way too strong. Being able to summon them multiple times throughout a fight, but having much less hp, I think would be a welcome change. As it is using summons feels like toggling off the challenge of any boss.

    One thing I'd like to add is in regards to the Coop section: As you've mentioned, it hasn't been changed from the other games, and that's not a good thing in this case. Personally, I've always played through these games in coop with a friend of mine, it's gotten to be a bit of a ritual for us to sit down and just do our first run together, even if it's just talking in VC while we're tackling different parts. And while it did have some troubles and annoyances here and there, overall it has always been enjoyable to do this.
    Not so in Elden Ring, sadly. There are multiple reasons for this, but the most egregious ones are that a) you cannot summon your horse in coop, and b) there are still fogwalls which block access to areas. The thing about the coop in these games, is that it worked because of the smaller worlds and constant engagement that you had. But Elden Ring has a lot of empty space in its open world, and it truly becomes obvious when you have to run everywhere instead of taking your horse. Coupled with the fact that you had to pretty much disengage in front of every cave, catacomb and legacy dungeon (and even places like the Bridge of Sacrifice!) and it frankly made playing coop a pain in the ***. In the end we only really summoned each other in front of bosses and otherwise engaged with the game by ourselves, 'coz we got so annoyed when we found Empty Corner #98773 or Asset Flip Catacomb #12.
    I know this is a bit of a personal issue/rant, but I still wanted to point it out because I've really been looking forward to just playing the game with my friend. Also, horse racing and jousts would've been awesome.

    Would very much like to hear you expand a bit more on that last bit of "soulsborne genre not expanding game mechanics" opinion you shared. Perhaps include that in a video discussing the various bosses of Elden Ring you mentioned?
    Thanks as always for the review and see you in the next one!

    I was a HUGE Demon Souls and Dark Souls fan. It took alot of practice and skill to become good against the environment and even more to be good against another human. Now that From Software has some different titles under their belt, the combat and world building seems so much deeper. Being well over 50 years old, the twich muscles are not what they used to be. That being said, I really want to play this game, I just do not have the time.

    19:12 FINALLY!!! The first person I've ever heard talk about this game who isn't a Mindless fanboy and isn't afraid to speak the truth. Let's see if he speaks the truth about the garbage excuse for a "co-op" system as well.
    Edit:: they already nerfed ALL my magic dmg by litterally 60% what more do you want!?😭

    I honestly think you are a very underrated but an absolutely indispensable element in the whole business of game reviews due to your strict process of 100% a game before providing a review or score for a particular game. There are multiple and varied factors that influence a players enjoyment of a game and the methodology through which said baseline is established largely depends on the methodology through which the figure or review is arrived at - they may vary from person to person but ultimately the full experience ranging from the highest high to the lowest low will have a bearing on the accuracy and efficacy of the review process.
    While most reviewers might have 30 hours into this game and provide their take on this matter, i believe that they process is flawed as it is not a complete nor an accurate summation of all the highs and lows that a game has to offer but merely a rough and incomplete experience. This is due to the urgent need to meet deadline as the first to come up with the review gets the most views which in turn earns them more subscribers etc. This methodology is a flawed process that neither accurately represents the best and worst that a particular game has to offer - you methodology on the other hand of 100% a game prior to giving a review or a score or a recommendation to new and interested players on whether it is worth investing their time in this game and if the time sink is commiserative to the enjoyment factor and if the price of said game presents a good value for money at the cost of being a few days to weeks late compared to other reviewers.
    Your methodology is a far more accurate gauge of if this games various elements such as story, sound, visuals, level design, game play loop etc is consistent throughout the game if the core gameplay loop is able to keep the player engaged in the game throughout the entire duration of the playthrough.
    All i want to say is, keep up the good work my friend and that you've earned a subscriber who actively waits on your reviews as i know that your opinion is about as valid as it gets irrespective of the subjective nature of game reviews - keep this up my friend and you are going to blow up very soon as more people come across your page.

    Appreciate you touching on some of the negative points in the endgame. So many reviewers wrote their opinions based on the first 1/3 of the story and it doesn't adequately sum up the full experience of the game.

    A video reviewing the bosses is much needed. I found the 10/10 reviews so confusing after finishing this game, the bosses are a huge step back from DS3, Bloodborne or Sekiro

This game doesnt aim to use sekiro combat but i might agree if you said sekiro have better combat system than souls. Tho i prefer souls combat rather than sekiro

    Good review. I had heard of a later difficulty spike in the game and you explained why that was in an easily understandable way. Before I was a little sceptical if I would like the game, but now I feel that I will enjoy most of the game. And perhaps misuse some of the mechanics for some of the more "bullshit" bosses that seams to come later on in the game.
