    Owning a Reverso, I don't think they are sport watches any more. They might have been once, but the specification of modern sport watches (shock and water resistance) has overtaken them by a long way. I would call the Reverso a dress / casual watch - equally at home under the sleeve of a suit or with jeans and a t-shirt. I paired mine with a black stingray watch strap and I love it. Very versatile and fun.

      I have the medium duoface and wear it with shorts and t shirt, boots, jeans and polos or whatever I fancy. The quick release straps mean it’s easy to change it up- the difference between a brown leather, blue suede and black gator is like having 3 different watches… or 6 different watches 😂

      I think that is a brilliant distinction. It is no longer a sport watch. However it can perform dress and casual duties. Especially with a strap change. It looks very laid back on suede/nubuck straps.

    Hi Britt!
    I bought my Reverso Small Second Medium only a few years ago for €5,100. And now it costs €11,100!!! That's crazy! It has got a simple manual movement without a hacking second! JLC has definitely priced itself out of the market for me.

    I have a jlc polaris date blue. It is gorgeous and no one seems to talk about it. It is 42mm (perfect for me but I get why it's too large for some) but it checks so many boxes. Sometimes I think folks aren't even looking at what else jlc has to offer.

    I just love Reverso. Everything it stands for, and everyone who wore it on screen (Batman, for example). My wife gave me the duoface two years ago for celebrating our 20th anniversary, so it is even more special. As a watch lover, it is like a dream to have two watches at any moment without having them on both hands (which would eventually draw too much unnecessary attention - yes, I already tried it. :))

      I didn't realize the increased price until I read comments here. I checked their web sites, and totally surprised to see the amount they increased. This may be the biggest price increase in any brand in history? How do they justify this? JLC has so much potential to be watch-lover's favourite brands. Or "had"? With one or two decent sports steel models, they really could be. They have skills, brand, design, and heritage.

Its catalogue continues several lines of watches with lots of variety and the highest possible quality of execution. I, too, have a bit of a bias as I have the good fortune to have an inherited Memovox, and would have said that the Memovox is JLC's flagship...Please keep the fine videos coming and keep on making progress in your recovery.

    I recently picked up the new black dial reverso just a month or two after getting a Cartier tank and they definitely compete for waist time. I will say that JLC pricing($21,000) for the rose gold model felt over priced(no deployant strap), but after I’ve been playing with different strap options I really love it.

    I just sold my Duoface last week after 2 years of ownership. I ADORE the watch, but I just never wore it so I couldn’t justify keeping it. I do think it’s much more dressy than sporty however, which is why I sold it. Were it sportier (more water resistance for example) I would have felt more comfortable wearing this as my daily.
    If they ever come out with a more robust version with an improved power reserve I will buy one again for sure. Honestly, a reverso with 100m of water resistance and some sort of date function would be end game for me.

    Fantastic video Britt! Love it! The JLC Reverso is a dream watch for me, it's fantastic! That being said I've limited myself to a specific budget and the Reverso is outside of that. As far as the watch being a one trick pony, I don't think that's true at all. It was designed for a purpose, and that purpose isn't really a thing anymore so it has become a fun parlor trick instead of being necessary to survive the polo field. So to me the Reverso is a fun callback to a bygone age, perhaps a more elegant age. And that feeling is why I love watches!

    I really would like a blue dial Reverso, but the price point is daunting. Especially for a watch I would mainly wear more in formal settings....and its basic movement. Hard for me to justify a Reverso when I have a Omega Globemaster (white dial), Monta Noble (blue dial), and a gold tone Fredrique Constant Highlife (black dial). With all thst said, this is hobby makes us irrational - and I love it!

  • @Justin6477
    @Justin6477 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I get what you mean about the sporty nature of the watch. The Cartier tanks have this relaxed elegance about them - very quiet and sedate. The Reverso is more assertive - I'd compare it with the Santos & Dumont which both have that sporty lineage but are also no longer sport watches in the modern sense.

    I didn't really like the JLC Reverso (or any square watch for that matter), but I really respect that it had a reason behind it. Back in the day watch companies looked around and just made watches to fit some weird profession/hobby; drivers had that VC, polo players had the reverso, submariners had the, uh, submariner.
    Nowadays, watch companies just look at their collection and say "lets just do all of this the exact same, but slightly different." I would love to return to the time where watch companies make weird watches for specific professions.

    For me, too, the Reverso Mono Face is the actual Reverso. The only exception is the brand new, relaunched Reverso Chronograph. I especially like the golden one with the black dial. Unfortunately outside of my budget.
    🏋‍♀🚴😫
    Speaking of sports watches. Of course Cal. 822 is still indestructible today. The movement is simple but extremely robust against shocks. I even suspect that the cal. 822 is immune to extreme mountain tours and even rugby. So the Mono Face can definitely be used as a sports watch. Only our head doesn't play along.

    That was not controversial at all. It is a sports watch. The water resistance is woeful, and could have been upgraded in the last 90 years, but it's a sports watch nonetheless. I'd get the monoface with small seconds, if I had to choose.
    But to stick it to Omega.... Firstly, the Speedy might be a bigger icon than the SMP. Secondly, there are AT's, Railmasters, PloProfs, Constellations and PO's in Omega's catalogue, and they all have the makings of an icon. The fact that the DeVille has fallen by the wayside somewhat is just regrettable, but Omega is not a one trick pony. :)

    The dependency of JLC on an almost 100 year old model line is a sad commentary on the rest of the JLC catalogue. The failure of JLC to gain lasting traction in the market dominant diver category despite the original promise of the now discontinued Master Compressor model line made JLC all the more dependent on the Reverso. The Reverso is a pretty stupid anachronism made all the worse because it is complicated to service for a number of reasons (overly complicated multipart case construction, overly dense movement with too little working space, etc.) and owners are basically forced to use JLC service centers. The Reverso could be updated and modernized but such efforts would likely be rejected in the market place creating even more of a dilemma for JLC. I am a JLC fan and gifted my wife a diamond bezeled manual wind Ultra Thin reference with a special dial. When she recently wanted to expand her sport watch wardrobe beyond Cartier, she actively looked at Reversos but she ended up preferring a new ceramic and rose gold Hublot woman’s reference notwithstanding a quartz movement (Reversos also come with quartz movements in woman’s models but she was looking at mechanical movement Reversos). I think I understand the august history of JLC movements but most woman have a different purchasing criteria than men. Quartz movements are not anathema which is well evidenced by the dominant success of quartz Cartier woman’s references for Richemont (the owner of both JLC and Cartier). Many make fun of LVMH’s Hublot in contrast to JLC but Hublot is selling to woman while JLC is not. The basic steel cased Reversos (not the Night and Day or the Duettos) are pretty blah (no matter which movement they have) and not too likely to excite non-watchnerd woman. Yes, the Reverso is a niche product but it is getting seriously long in the tooth in ways that Cartier has avoided with regard to its heritage references regardless of whether the movements used by Cartier are mechanical or quartz.

    Absolutely not! I also got my intro to JLC via the master control series. There was also at the time Master Compressor line (remember those?). I do recall looking at some reversos at the time but to me, as my 2nd watch next to a SS Ulysse Nardin chronograph on a steel bracelet, I was looking for a travel/gmt/worldtimer that could also work with a suit in court, etc. It came down to hometime vs master geographique and I settled for the hometime. Still relevant, still elegant till today. As for the reverso, I could never settle a debate within myself - purist single face or a duo face which defies the whole concept of the reverso but gives you advantage of that 2nd time zone. Which is probably why I still don't own either one.

    When I first started with the maison I bought myself a vintage memovox. Then I found a guy selling a 1962 solid 18k rose gold dress watch JLC. This was followed by a rectangle “tank look a like” JLC from the late 1960’s or early 70’s. My most recent purchase was few months ago the medium classic Reverso. I’m from Asia and people here are more into Rolex AP or VC. Very few would stop and look at the watches I wear which is nice

    • @BrittPearceWatches
      @BrittPearceWatches  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think sooo many people agree with this! I think JLC kinda should invest more in their sports watch department. When I think of the high horology brands, Patek Philippe, AP, VC, the watches you think of first is their sporty watches (Nautilus, Royal Oak, Overseas); luxury but undeniably sports watches. Of course they still have their crazy complication dress watches, but most modern men want sportier offerings. You know?! I really wish JLC went b@lls to the wall on a sports watch

  • @oysterman962
    @oysterman962 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's definitely not a one trick pony. Just that collectors only focus on that one model. It's not the brand's fault. It's like saying McDonald's only make the Big Mac. Just because everyone knows the Big Mac doesn't mean you ignore everything else on the whole menu. Makes me angry that such an innovative brand that has given so much to horology is seen with ignorance. My first JLC was a Memovox over a decade ago. Wasn't until recently that I bought a Reverso. It's less delicate than keyboard warriors in tailored suits make it out to be. If you own it, use it.
