- In this video, we head to the Vallée de Joux in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland to visit JLC's historic manufacturing facility and headquarters. While I've often heard the brand called "the watchmaker's watchmaker", this trip confirmed the special things going on at JLC. Small annoyance in the cinematography; the short one image cutaways interrupt the flow of the video, works better if you cut away through multiple shots or longer single image shots. You geek out on watches, boots and fragrance, i do so on editing :)

Great people produce great and sustainable products in great companies, which of course cost a lot of money because their employees earn high salaries so that they can make a good living from them.
The level of detail and craft here is insane. Also never knew about the Atmos until now but that was amazing to see how it worked.

I’m a Machinist and cannot fathom the patience it takes to do this sort of micro machining and hand finishing to a polish . Amazing craftsmanship !
It boggles the mind, ive a fair bit of smd soldering of tiny components on circuit boards repairing ecus, the guys who fix laptops and phone boards are a step up from my skills ,yet an old ecu with fairly chunky components is pretty difficult, this stuff is on another level altogether.

I can make fine furniture, repair SMd componentry and im a good machinist.
The chinese movements are not being made purely by hand , edm wire cutting, stamping etc is hiw they are mass producing these "spot on replicas" are way off the standards of the swiss.
Look at thebdifference between an officila seagull movement and the knock off companies.
The gap in just a 100 pound orice point is huge.
And the seagull movements are superior to almost all the fakes that ape rolex abd pattek etc.
Jaeger le coutre movenents are not replicated. The refinement that is required is way way way above any shenzhen knock off.

Will be a long way from a rolex in accuracy and finish and still cost around 800 dollars. They are faking the appearance and the movements do not have the same systems in them even.
Amd whilst yiu are here advocating for child labour too.
There is some stuff that they simply cannot replicate.
Ask anoyine who bought even an expensive fake.
They stop working after a year or two.
The little screw that holds a tourbillion has to be perfectly balanced in concert with the other three, its why noone fakes tourbillions.
Seagull do make one at a very reasonable orice..
And its a good movement but it certainly isnt an automatic.
Get a pocket watch amd just try to service it .
Then come back and tell me its easy.
Even those chinese kids need significant training amd oractice to produce rudimentary movements tgat will function for a year, and the chinese dont come up with manufacturing techniques, they copy.

JLC is my favourite watchmaker. So much history, art and tradition with careful consideration given to every timepiece that is engineered and produced to the highest level. I had the opportunity to do a similar tour almost 30 years ago. The factory has changed a lot. The values of traditional handmade watchmaking and most advanced machining has evolved. JLC is a gem in the industry.
Thank you Teddy so much for taking us on a tour of JLC! There is no other TH-camr who takes us into the manufacturers like Teddy does. I have had JLC on my collection list, and as a result of this video have put JLC on my to-purchase this year list!
There are quite a few behind-the-scenes videos of the JLC HQ by other TH-camrs. Adrian Barker comes to mind, but there are others.
I agree with you, amazing brand. Just some unsolicited advice lol; I bought a Reverso during the height of covid without trying it on due to the circumstances, and it just didn’t fit. I sold it at a loss. Do yourself a favor if you’re considering a Reverso, and make sure it fits you. Square and rectangular watches are notorious for fit issues, as I have subsequently discovered. Good luck!

As a JLC watch owner and fan, this video is just amazing to me. The explanations on the manufacturing procedures were not always super clear but the camera work was top notch.

The Atmos clock power source through gaseous expansion & contraction is absolutely fantastic. I just can’t find words to describe how amazing it is for someone to conceptualise and implement this. It may be a simple way in which matter behaves but to be able to capture that is something I can’t say enough to be impressed by it.

JLC Truly is and will always be the "The Watchmakers, him Watchmaker" I mean they have just such a rich history of making some of the worlds most beautiful and well made movements ever, their vintage repeaters were some of the best made and many companies actually bought them to use in their own (pocket)watches, even Vacheron Constantin used their movements and even Patek, that alone should tell you all you need to know. I have a gorgeous Vintage Jaeger LeCoultre A-10 Chronoflite from an old Navy war plane and a newer version used by Boeing in some of their aircraft, just absolutely amazing clocks and the attention to detail even in something as mundane as a clock for a plane is just amazing.
This was an absolute treat, Teddy. Anytime you can take us along for a tour, please do so.

What a privilege to have such access, I envy you. So magnificent to see these great skills still have a valued place. Only twice in 58 years have I had to honor to witness real craft masters at work, I suspect you respected the privilege. Congratulations to you and the team for putting together this fascinating film. On a side note when Notre Dame was damaged by fire a couple of years ago, although horrible, I immediately thought, what a great opportunity there will be to rediscover so many lost skills and give employment for young to learn from older masters that have not had a chance or projects with budgets to exercise their great skills for decades.

The sound still resonates in my heart . I hear it from time to time excuse the pun .I live and have lived near a church in the UK for over 30 years. I'm not Christian. I still to this day know what time it is without looking at my phon. learned the the bell rings e.g half hour chime 15 min chime and bell ring for the hour it is. To put that in a watch is .. beyond craftsmanship. Bravo.

Damn Teddy, this exactly the watch content I want to see! I love JLC, so great to see this BTS action! My grandparents had an Atmos on their mantle for my entire childhood, I got in trouble so many times for messing with it. I was absolutely mesmerized by that clock, and attribute my love of watches to this day to the JLC Atmos. Really cool to see those in action. I have the Atmos to this day, even tho mine has kind of a 70/80's design.. I still love it!

Even a prestige veteran like JLC opens their factory for a visit while Rolex is still a secret to the public, it's funny to think that Rolex with only basic movement has sth to hide other than their manufacturing cost is a tiny micro fraction of the msrp ;)
My favorite Swiss brand. For highschool graduates like me, my grand seiko to me is the modern day Jaeger-LeCoultre in terms of importance and movement mastery but with more "modern" dial design and crazy attention to detail from the polishing to the movement decoration. I believe grand seiko is one of the only brands that can get my generation into watches properly without the mini phones on the wrist garbage.
GS needs to thin out their movements and improve their clasps before they can be considered in the same class. The Zaratsu method also makes their cases scratch magnets.
I'm a millennial and grand seiko opened a new world for me. Made me love watches. 100% my favorite watch brand. The spring drive sweep is second to none. The accuracy is better. The polishing, the accuracy, the dial.. the best.
@@JackoWillMakeLives-loveu you know how many brands don't have adjustable on the fly clasps? I gave up on that dream, yes Rolex has it but Rolex completely taints the watch world being used purely as a flex at my age and the ADs are ran like shit. Their movements are solid but not as specialized as a 36000 bpm 80 hour movement or a spring drive which yes I know not everyone likes. The movement in my SLGA009 is thin enough, it's not a pure dress watch, their evolution 9 collection reminds me most of JLCs Polaris collection and those are the types of watches for me that make the most sense as they are durable, and have solid water resistance, solid movement, and unique dials, except grand seiko is innovating way more than them in recent times and really making things that no Swiss manufacturer is making. I could compare their movement finishing to H Moser not JLC for 10k which is crazy for me to even think about. The polishing attracting scratches for me, I could care less, it shows you actually wear the thing and the second I got a few scratches on it I wasn't afraid at all to make it a daily wearer and scratch it up. Mine only really has a few bigger scratches on the bracelet. I hate when people worry about scratching their watch which causes them not to wear it as much, I don't give a shit about the value of it, I just want to enjoy it. I didn't get it because it I thought it was flashy and it's expensive, I got it because it's the best white dial dress it up and down watch with in my case +/- 2 seconds a month for 8.5k (what I personally paid for mine)! It's the most comfortable watch I've ever worn, if I really wanted an adjustable clasp I'd put it on a leather strap. And I don't care if it gets scratched because the real artwork is on the face and is not the case. That polishing under that crystal is incredibly reflective and glimmers beautifully with every outfit I've ever worn with it. The issue I have with it is it makes me want to also get the SLGA021 which is identical in every way except for that beautiful dusk lake dial. I shouldn't be spending that kind of money on watches if I was normal but it's the only artwork I buy and it's the only accessory I wear so to me it brings immense and incredible value. Heck I even met a Swiss guy a few days ago and loved comparing our favorite brands and the pieces we own and we compared JLC to GS for over and hour, not to mention he's been studying for half a decade already to be a watchmaker.

I had an affinity for watches because my dad gave me a Casio that glowed in the dark. He then later gifted me a TAG he bought in the late 80s to commemorate a promotion he had received. Those two watches are very meaningful to me, but I never really got fully in to watches until I stumbled on Teddy's channel; I guess I didn't really understand why watches were more than simple timekeeping objects. I have been enjoying all of your content ever since I found your channel, learning more and more about the art that is watchmaking. I am completely consumed by this art,and love videos like this were mastership is displayed (and are not so focused on the cost or status of watches). These types of videos make me even more enthralled by watches. Thanks Teddy! PS: I also took your advice about not rushing into buying any particular piece, but rather spend time saving for a watch that I truly want. I am hoping to get a Reverso and a Skydweller before I turn 40 (33 right now, so definitely achievable). Again, thank you for all your dedication and passion for this niche passion!!
