    I have Suicide-Shifters on the stem of my road bike. I wanted to like the road bars, but they were too low for me. At least for the frame I have. So I decided to swap in a mini ape-hanger bar, and next, swapping the Suicide-Shifters for twist-shifters.

    I bought a new bike Bergamont Revox 2 which is having in built twist shifters. Can I change those shifters with trigger shifters in future?

    What are the pros and cons of the grip and trigger shifters on a mountain bike? I've never liked a grip shift on a trail when I'm constantly changing my leverage on the handlebars.

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thats the biggest difference like you mentioned, as you're changing leverage while mountain biking or moving your weight around with the grip shift its very likely to change gears accidentally. With a trigger shifter it's a deliberate movement to shift gears not something you could necessarily do on accident. With a trigger shifter you also are able to run a larger full size grip and you have more freedom to move your brake levers and shifters around to fit your riding style the best since the clamping area on the bars is much smaller.

      @@YourFavoriteCyclist I've never used a trigger shifter and the mountain bike I'm interested in getting comes with that. Could you please do a video on how to use trigger shifters.

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Jerbt Great suggestion! Let me think of the best way to do that one. Trigger shifters can be a little tricky since every brand and line of shifters works slightly different, but I should be able to come up with something!

      @@YourFavoriteCyclist thanks! I'm getting the Cannondale Trail 8 and I thought to just change the triggers out with grip shifters but I haven't found a video how to until I realized why I shouldn't change them out.

      Yeah trigger shifters are a nice upgrade from grip shifters. I believe SRAM does make a high end grip shifter for those who want one, but it's very uncommon to see

    Subbed! Quick question, I got a bike from Costco with shimano twist shift, but sometimes it doesn’t get into gear or it does and has lots of clicking and I need to wiggle the shifter to get it to not click. Is there a fix? I’d honestly like to get the better shifter if possible.

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You could try to adjust the cable tension a little bit. On the end of the shifters where the cable goes in there should be an adjuster you can turn to tighten the cable up some. That might help some.

    like could i go from say a shimano twist grip to a shimano trigger shifter without having to replace everything else?

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as they are the same gear count (ie: 7 speed for 7 speed) you should only need to change the shifter

    Sir thanks for the information.
    My new mitb has microshif mezzo 3*7 gear. Front high lever is shifting but no click have to push all the way. Tried cable slack. High low screw adjustment.
    Also when the chain is on 3 the low shifter is a bit unusually firm but clicks and shifts.
    Can you advice me?

    Maintenance wise, how do STI shifters score? Thing is, I am thinking of upgrading my bike, but am confused whether to stick to flat handlebars and trigger shifters or go for STI or bar end shifters. At the moment, my bike has grid shifters. I like to tour. So, I've to think "maintenance wise" also.😇

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      STI shifters (or brifters as a lot of people call them) are pretty simple to maintain, pretty much the go to on any road bike nowadays. If you enjoy touring I would switch over to a set of drop bars and I would go with some friction shift bar end shifters. Super simple operation, by far the easiest to maintain and easiest to work through if you're out somewhere and something goes wrong.

      @@YourFavoriteCyclist Apart from Kona Sutra, I don't see many bikes with bar end shifters. Even the Trek 520 moved to STI.

      Yeah sadly they're a dying thing on bikes. I see them mostly on Surly long haul truckers and some of their other bikes, but otherwise they're just something you would have to change over it you wanted them

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely is doable. You can use your old cables if you'd like to, however if you're buying brand new shifters they come with new cables as well so you might as well swap them out while you're there doing the work anyways

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have 2 shifters the right shifter generally controls the rear gears and the left controls the front gears.

    Great video I installed a trigger shifter on a Schwinn AL Comp 27.5 bike and a new front detailer. the problem I'm having is after installed it will only shift from the small gear [ front derailleur] to the largest never does all three. I just cant figure it out no matter how I adjust it. all the front gears all seem to be spaced the same? Help

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a similar issue when I installed new shifters on Project Mongoose. I had to mess around with cable tension a bit to get it to shift into all 3 gears, can't be too tight in the smallest gear otherwise it does what you stated.

    • @artfourn
      @artfourn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Recap I crewed the adjustment in at the shifter and backed it out two turns then I reset the cable at the derailed. As I was shifting I made adjustments at the shifter and I finally got all three gears to work. ( finally)

    You were completely wrong saying "nothing can really go wrong on them" (ie. twist shifters). When my old bice was new out the box, they worked fine for about 4 to 5 months, then the chain would slip right off as I'd change gears, all in the middle of flowing traffic in the middle of the road. I'd have to limp off, like some pitiful sight, to the sidewalk and fit the chain back over one of the cassette cogs and get my hands dirty in te process. The chain slipping was especially true under acceleration from standstill where I needed to change up a gear fast and sometimes with no change of gear at all. And... it just got worse over time. You were right saying they feature on cheap bikes. They are unreliable and a can of worms. Id recommend swapping them out a.s.a.p. and opt for trigger shifters instead.

      As far as I'm aware eBike shifters are going to be the same replacements as for a standard bike. Unless theres some sort of wiring that goes into your shifter it should be pretty standard.
