Dear Jason, Thanks for all your videos I have watched them all. I have a 2018 TRD off road 4Runner and love it. I as well had to find a new passion after beating cancer and it is going to be my 4Runner. Thanks again my God bless you and your family. Sincerely Tony Jones
Tony, I don't know you but congratulations on your new lease on life. Scary stuff! Wishing you good vibes on your 4Runner build.
Thanks it’s going to be fun. Hope you are well also.
Congratulations on beating cancer sir!
Jason, thanks for the content my friend. From another 4runner owner and a fellow dad I appreciate having a place to see some of these modifications, what our trucks can do and how you share it with your kids. Keep it up, do you and share for those that care.
Thanks for your honesty, Jason! It's refreshing your channel isn't one of those who review every 'free' item given to them, regardless of quality.
Maxey thanks for “wording” what I was thinking
And how would you know otherwise?
He's capitalizing on a trend and through the content creation ultimately looking to grease his own pockets. He's a businessman first and foremost.
Boy , CBI sure knows how to market huh,,,between Jason and Maxx I’m digging they’re products 👍🏼
Yes! But marketing only goes so far! If the product isn’t great, the marketing is not nought!
Once you meet them, you'll understand why. I've talked with Nathan, the owner, at NWOR last year and ExpoWest this year. I didn't know he was the owner at the time. He was terrific. Really a solid guy who was patient, interested & reasonable. We decided against a full front bumper for now but I would have bought his aluminum front in a heartbeat! Very pleasant to deal with.
Jason, I’ve loved watching since you’ve started. I’ve enjoyed watching your skill set as a storyteller get better and better and your content is always amazing. Every time I get the notification of a new post, I get excited to see what you’ve done now! You have a unique talent friend and I look forward to seeing many more! Keep up the great work and I look forward to meeting you one day!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Nice job Jason, I like your honesty about your sponsors and such. Keep the channel going, it's the best one out there.
Thank you Larry!
Jason, I've always wanted a 4runner, and a little over a year ago I picked one up, my dream car. I went w/ the offroad in super white and since I've bought it turned it into my own badass Stormtrooper. I love you videos, and you're an inspiration. Always looking for deals, and I'll start recording my build in hopes to inspire, network, and just adventure. Thanks for everything and great job!
Sounds like you need to get it regeared.
Awesome!! To bad I don’t own a 4Runner. But I do have my Tacoma TRD Sport. 04’ 6 speed manual. Love it.
Great truck as well!
Dope looking 4Runner. These would be an awesome Xmas gift.
Wish they made skid plate kits for my 2012 fj cruiser. No company makes em this solid and high quality. I wonder if since the 2010 to 2020 4runner are on the same chassis if they will work on my 2012 fj cruiser.
Very excited about your new skids. They look great!
Thanks!
Awesome suspension hope to have one installed on my new 4runner trd off rd premium. Maybe not the one you did but a beginner one for now.
Came for the skid plate install stayed for the really inspirational message! You’re doing great things Jason, thanks for making it fun!
Wow, definitely going with CBI skids for our Runner.
Mr. J. Sir.. I love your honesty. "you just don't care anymore. It is what it is." I love it. Solid work in everything you do.. Cheers from South Florida..
Jason I appreciate you and your channel keep it up. Can’t wait to see the bumpers.
Jason, loving your videos. I wanted to go to your previous meet and greet but I’ve been deployed. Just getting back and would really love to meet you!
I’ll have another! Thank you for your service!
Hi Jason, absolutely love your videos and content. Im fairly new to your channel but always look forward to new uploads from you. The 4 runner is looking awesome by the way.
Thanks Christian!
One of your best narratives in my humble opinion. Very well said. #truth
Calling the 4Runner underpowered drives me a little bit nuts. It does really well for a 6 cylinder. It feels as good or better as any normally aspirated 6 cylinder truck. Comparing it to an 8 cylinder just isn't reasonable. I've driven GXs, 4th Gen 4Runners & Jeep Grand Cherokees with 8s. It's a definite difference but that's what you expect. It's perhaps reasonable to alert people it isn't a good hauler but people really should be looking at 8s if they plan to routinely haul heavy trailers. I just feel like calling it underpowered is misleading to those who are new to trucks.
Anyway, love the work. Glad you're finding a way to keep your passion alive - Utah certainly won't hurt. Keep up the awesome editing & keep doing you!
I'm buying my trd offroad tomorrow and have been researching mods and addons for the 4runner and came across your youtube sir and I want you to know I really appreciate the time and dedication not only to your family but others as well. I am looking for a good roof tent and a few other upgrades. There's lots of snow right now and I am going to get up there and do some camping. I am looking for a good wench as well. What's a good one that isn't extremely heavy? lol. Keep up the good work bud and thanks. :)
Cool skids. Didnt need the rant
Thanks for keeping it real Jason. Not editing out the bodily functions was genius. 🤣👍
Love the video Jason. I have the bug like nothing I'v done before!
Try re-gearing your differentials, especially since you have bigger sized tires. It helps drastically.
Great stuff Jason. I really enjoyed the entry soapbox. I want to start my own overlandy style content, but let myself get bogged down in little details instead of the details of creating. Really enjoyed that man thanks.
And my truck hopes it wins some belly protection.🖒
Thanks! Sometimes you just have to get started and work on getting things to where you want them to be, along the way! Getting started is ALWAYS the hardest part!
Awesome video Jason. By the way, that black Swell Runner hoodie looks pretty nice 🤙 Keep the content coming man.
Thank you ray!
another great movie, I really enjoyed your soapbox talk, explains alot. You truck is really looking good. Are you going to be at Expo East Next Week? I would like to Hi
Thank you Larry! Appreciate the support man! Unfortunately I won’t be able to be at expo east. :(
You could have placed the old and new skid plates side by side after removing old and prior to installing new.
Smart idea. Sometimes the obvious is easy to overlook though. Definitely done it myself.
What sort of IED protection does this armor offer?
Jason what made you change from rci to c4 I live c4 but they don’t make tundra yet so I was looking into Ironman very strong full body and hidden hardware
Great job jason i appreciate your honesty !
Question: why not ARB bumper? What’s MPG now? How you deal with rust in the future?
I went with RCI raw aluminum for my skids, based on videos and recommendations from you and others. They do a good job of protection (I have landed pretty hard on them a few times), but they don't drain well and they're difficult to work around when doing things like changing fluids. I can already see those new CBI skids will do a much better job on both accounts. I don't think I'll be changing mine out anytime soon, but it's easy to see why you did. Like so many others have said, you really do a great service with your channel and your other content. I turned down my first "sponsorship" opportunity on my instagram account this week and it made me appreciate the work you do behind the scenes to find the right brands to partner with. Keep up the great work.
Thanks James! When we pulled my RCI skids off, you wouldn't believe all the crap we found caked in there (or maybe you would!). The RCI skids are fine, they definitely do the job and their quality is just fine, nothing bad to say about them. BUT, the CBI product is clearly well thought out, has been continually innovated and to me, seems to be a better product.
We went with the RCI raw aluminum as well. Our vehicle is a grand tourer, crossing the country a couple times a year so the weight had some consideration. Long term maintenance was another big decider for us. I expect to get 20-25 years out of our truck and the later half of its life will be in the Pacific NW. Anything steel here is a long term PITA to take care of so aluminum works well. We are also much more Overlanders than Crawlers and the NW isn't as rocky as the SW. I am interested to hear both you & Jason mention drainage problems. I haven't put mine on yet & I'm wondering if I should add a couple DIY drill drain holes. Any particular spots where you see that needed?
@@TheKPDX I would hate to suggest drilling a hole and compromise the structural integrity of the skids. The drainage issue isn't such a big deal that I would do anything about it other than find little things to help (sometimes as simple as driving around when it's dry outside).
@@JamesTalbot Thanks James. In the NW, driving around when it is dry out can be alot harder than you think. It's really not an exaggeration to say that we can be wet for months at a time. Rain starts here in October & lasts pretty steadily through June. It's one of the reasons I actually prefer AWD here in the NW, it's always slick, even our roads grow. I have that function in my old Pathfinder but traded it off in the T4R for the e-locker over the Limited as the limited would have required extensive reworking around all the lower edges & then adding a rear locker. I appreciate your response. Thanks!
Great videos!! Greetings from Panamá!!
You spend too much time talking about the “you” and the “why”. It’s the “how” that’s needed.
Transparency is good. I think it was a great idea to address it and think it would be a good practice to at least drop it into the description in the future when you have sponsorship deals - just keeps things clean that way.
Awesome video man. I have a 2018 trd off road premium that is hoping to win!
Great intro music
Thanks Dan!
I just sub I'm planning on getting a 4Runner too. Looking up to you bro. Keep it up I been addicted to your TH-cam channel.. Thanks
Are you not worried about overloading your frame? I mean, things are engineered to be a certain way under certain conditions.
Planning on doing steel bumpers, sliders, and skids, but I am concerned about how it will affect MPG and overall performance. How much of a difference have you noticed since installing everything?
No difference so far. I was actually surprised by this
Interestingly, I did 17.6 mpg on my way DOWN to Moab from Salt Lake last week - THEN I did 14.4 mpg on my way back up! That was about 200 miles one way, I was definitely surprised by this. Going down to Moab, we lost, I dunno, maybe 1000-1500 ft of elevation, so the difference in numbers makes sense - but I didn't expect to do as well as 14.4 on the way back. I've done 15's pretty consistently since I moved to the mountains - even the last 4 weeks with the new bumpers!
Is that with the trailer? What is your relatively flat highway mileage without the trailer? I'm just barely below 20MPG, but thats all stock other than 275 KO2s.
@@SwellRunner 17.6 with the trailer! That's pretty darn good.
Look into installing a transmission cooler and/or regear.
I’m wondering? Do you wish you would have just bought a GX460 and build that up since it has a v8 in it with a little more power. Can pick up a used two year old one for a reasonable price?
What are you doing with your tail lights?
Nothing. The driver side tail light was removed to fish the power wire to the license plate light
What will you do with your old C4 Front bumper?
Gonna give it away!
Are you giving away the SSO bumper?
It's from C4 - and yes, that's coming next week (or later this week)!
Love the wheels. Fuel?
Skid plates for the win
The rci skid look better 😐
Awesome have a great time
With all this armor what does the 4Runner get for mileage? I’m thinking around 10?
I get an average of about of 16ish with similar mods. I do not have the fuel tank skid though. Just gotta realize that this is basically a truck, and don't try to go 85 on the highway all the time. It's not terrible.
Actually, amazingly I did 18 on the way to Moab last week and 16 on the way back. Was surprised for sure... but overall avg mileage hasn't changed around town either.
Jason Koertge , just wondering. I have a 2011 limited with 20” wheels and plain stock. I get 22 so your not losing that much. By the way the burb was awesome!
Got this message when I tried to enter for the skid plates, “This app wants permission to do anything you can do on your TH-cam account. For example, it will be able to see, edit and delete your videos, playlists and subscriptions, rate videos, as well as post, edit or delete your comments and captions.” 😧
I’d love to enter the drawing without giving gleam complete full access to my google account. Is there a way to do that?
Not sure.. I'd imagine that access is between gleam and youtube... I just checked the button to allow people to enter that way. Maybe you can enter another way - not really sure!
Got the same thing. Was shocked! Will have to pass on that. Jason maybe find a less privacy invasive way to run a contest. I'd love to enter for the bumper too.
I learned so much from you! I still remember video where you explain why you bought the 4Runner. Funny, I have had EXACTLY the same thought process when I was buying mine, except I went with the premium ed. to get, well, premium features. Well done (content and 4Runner).
Dont know what I could say that hasn't already been said. I've enjoyed watching your journey from the beginning to this point and look forward to the growth and adventures to come.
Another great video!!
Heck, if you’re going to add some weight, it might as well be below the frame! That will lower your center of gravity a wee bit. Your Toyota dealer is going to hate you come service time, but oh well.
Haha. Well, that's true! I've talked to a few techs - while it adds more to mess with, those techs I've worked with have enjoyed working on something that actually gets used!
@@SwellRunner Good to know. I've worried a bit about that aspect. CO, AZ & UT are definitely used to it. Less so in the PNW and almost non-existent in the Midwest. I'm trying to keep notable service to CO, UT & WA locations.
Do they have an Aluminum option for these skids?
Yep
@@SwellRunner Doh!! And I just bought RCI at their last sale! Definitely like the coverage.
Super excited. Hope I win!
So much face time...
Okay honest opinion, which skid is actually better now?
sans the sponsorship?
The cbi kit has more coverage and is a more complete kit. Looks better as well. Imo
Badass.
You remind me of Bill Nye the Science guy and I like it. Subscribed.
Why not add the rear skid? So the “full” skid plate set is actually skids for the front and middle, not a complete “full set”? I gotta say, the marketing and description on the CBI website is confusing, as their description for all skid plates is the exact same write up.
👌👌👌
No thumbs up, no thumbs down...I wanted to learn about CBI install...not hear you talk about the reasons you started your channel. I felt like I was at church listening to the sermon.
Sweet
Trying to enter but I don’t think I was successful. This gleam thing ran me in circles and I never got any confirmation.
Yesssss!!!
Do an LS Swap!!!!!!!!
Jason, you have to change your mods list now....
Whew - I have to update so much... haha
Time to regear!
Was the sponsorship deal with CBI measured in terms of video duration? Don't think even they would've bargained for this turning into a freaking TED Talk.
I would have had way more respect for this guy if he did the work himself. 🤨
Oh yeah these are awesome except for the person that has to service the vehicle even for a simple oil change!!
Love all the videos. I wanted a 4x4 and didn’t know what to pick. I watched everything I could for weeks. Your channel is the most informative and interactive. A lot of other channels have different vehicles every week. I need someone committed to a single truck. That’s you my friend. So I now have a 2016 trail I have only put a leveling kit with new mid-low end Bilstein shocks. They made a difference though. I hope to win your contest. I’m not going overlanding till I have the top 3 things taken care of. Which is good advice by the way. Thanks for all your videos and commitment to family. 👍🤙😎👨🔬
Intro song? The guitar
Move to Utah and you go crazy with mods. Cool.
Skip to the 8 minute mark
Yes. Please do.
Sorry to say this but, you need to do less talking I want to see what is being done to 4 runner and I Cant! Thank you.
Lol, it would have been better to edit that out. Plus it took longer to add text over it then just to remove it. It was a relief for you but not the audience. Take care, nice build. Edit: yes to the supercharger!!
Less talk and more install footage.
Lol 8 mins before there’s any skid plate related info...
See, that’s where you’re wrong. We do need to know it was sponsored or provided free or at a discount since without that disclaimer upfront and ahead of a product mention, we can’t trust you. It’s unethical for you to have gone this far without disclosing relationships with companies in your videos that personally benefit you.
And to be clear, I’ve watched all of your videos and you were a huge influence on me trading in my limited 4Runner for a new TRDP. Your words and actions have influence. That’s why it’s been frustrating for me to see you transition from off-roading and camping videos and discussions to gear flaunting and pretty blatant brand displays. Your videos were a good influence for family guys to get out and do things with what you have, not what you can acquire.
Please for the love of god do not take that to a dealership to get your oil change. The technician will hate you and get screwed over hour wise taking that bumper off just to get to the oil filter. Change your own oil.
Long term sustainability and sponsorship salesmanship with little to no actual off road experience are complete contradictions.
How so? They have nothing to do with each other so how can they contradict one another? Either way, I may not have been “off-roading” for my whole life, but my truck definitely gets used.
@@SwellRunner When all you do is review products by companies that support and sponsor you then you have a bias and therefore become nothing more than a salesman, not an overland or off roader with credibility and therefore without sustainability. Yes, plenty of viewers like reviews, but it becomes rather repetitious and predictable. You might also try much less time in front of the camera, and use the camera to bring your viewers focus on the overlanding trips. Your channel, your choice.
Wow really? I’ve been watching Jason’s channel since he started it and I feel that the better part of the content he’s put out if offroad/overlanding trips. I like his style of explaining things to the camera as do most of his subs. Everyone is biased about what they have on their rig regardless of if they’re sponsored by the company or not. YOU DO YOU JASON! Much love from the Pacific Northwest 🌲
i agree with everybody, you talk about yourself too much. we are here to see the skid and install. you barely have any content of that.
Too much talking!
Dude, you switched to cbi because they sponsor you. That's the only reason. It's a skid plate for christ's sake.
جججج

t
Could of saved 10 minutes by just saying your channel is trying different components to review? Could care less how you got them.
Put the skid plate on your 👄 mouth.
