Why I Bought a MARTIN ACOUSTIC Guitar (GPC 13E Road Series)

  • I just got a new Martin acoustic guitar. It's the GPC 13E Road Series.
    In this video, I share why I bought this particular Martin and not a Taylor (or the other Martin guitar I played in the store that day).
    Oh, and I bought my Martin guitar at my local shop in Tampa, Replay Guitar Exchange. A big thank you to Mark for helping me choose that day!
    Check them out here. They also offer free shipping in the US:
    www.replayguitar.com/
    The funny thing is I wasn't even in the market for a new acoustic. I share that story with you at the end of the video.
    It became apparent that I needed one, or at least a backup acoustic guitar. I play 2-3 live solo acoustic shows each week.
    As you'll see in the video, once I played the Martin GPC 13E Road Series, it was the obvious choice!
    This acoustic has a nice full sound with plenty of bottom end, which that's what many acoustic guitars lack.
    It also plays nicely. I did take it back to Replay Guitar Exchange to have the action lowered so it plays even better, now.
    I hope you enjoy this video.

      They're great! I like Taylors as well. My friend has 2 of them and they're awesome. But this particular Martin just stuck out!

      In my experience I've always loved Martin acoustics but they seem a bit tinny or trebly to me. I prefer the Taylor's, they sound more full and less tinny to me. At least the ones I've been able to try in my small guitar shop. Maybe it's a selection issue from little choices to try. Yours sounds pretty great. Cheers. 🍻

    • @G_Demolished
      @G_Demolished ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@donbishop6994 It probably is a selection issue. Generally the opposite is the case. Martins tend to be warmer and Taylors tend to be brighter.

    • @donbishop6994
      @donbishop6994 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@G_Demolished I don't disagree one bit. My local shop only has a small handful of each so my selection has always been limited. Usually only jumbos and parler sizes of each.

    Congratulations Jason. After playing many many acoustic gigs up here in New England an injury put me on a 5 year hiatus. During that time my13 year old Gibson dreadnought became a beast. Too big, hard to play etc. I traded her in and found myself in the same dilemma as yourself. Torn between Martin and Taylor. Both awesome guitars. I chose the Taylor because of the playability factor and because they were running a special, "buy 1 gift 1." GS mini for $199. Now I have a nice playable acoustic and a cool little backup.
    Anyway, thanks for your videos. I hope to be backout there soon doing shows and you are a great inspiration. Rawk On my friend!!!

      It's been great for live gigs. The only gripe I have is that it does go slightly out of tune here and there. Granted, I'm in Florida where it's either super humid or just regular humid (but I never had this issue with my Takamine). Other than that, I do love the Martin

    👍I have been playing my Martin DC-AuraGT live at gigs 2 or 3 times a week for a few years now and it is fantastic! The guitar sounds unbelievable unplugged, and the 3 Aura presets mean quick EQ changes for the room happen in seconds. The guitar was reasonably expensive here in Australia, about $3000, but worth every cent. It came with the Martin hard case, but I bought the Martin soft case you have. I love the soft case because it has shoulder straps and at most acoustic gigs I can make one trip from the car to the stage with the guitar on my back and carry the amp (Fishman Loudbox Mini) and mic-stand, cables and i-Pad. Also the soft case takes up slightly less space in my car. I can squeeze it in with an electric guitar and P.A. when I gig with a band and need to carry a P.A. and lights. Every inch counts right! Thanks to the Acoustic Centre here in Melbourne for recommending it. Awesome. ✌️❤️🙏🇦🇺

    Congratulations Jason GPC13E is an amazing sounding guitar I have myself one sunburst identical to yours 2 weeks old.
    To be honest I sold away a 6 month old Gibson J45 because was impossible to get used to it .
    The high action was a big problem to me and after visiting several luthiers to correct the problem the guitar was buzzing so much that bothered me and decided to sell it away to buy this one,.
    I did also a previous reserch and testing on other guitars like a Taylor 214 , 510ce and finally this one was to my ears much better souding and comfortable to play, personally I didnt like the softcase so at the moment of purchase the shop attendant suggested me to pay a 100 extra euros to change it for a Martin hard case.
    All best to you and best wishes I hope you continue enjoying playing the Martin as much I do, best regards from Finland.

    I bought a Taylor AD17e last year ($1700) and it comes with a soft shell case. I though the same thing as you and I even bought a hardshell case for it but after seeing the soft shell and how durable it is, that’s what I keep it in now. It’s great!
    As far as your guitar issues, I had a similar issue years ago with an Ibanez acoustic guitar. It would play for a minute or so and then the sound would just quit. I took it to a local guitar tech and he pretty much said that the pick up was shot and it would have to be replaced. Unfortunately it was old enough that you can’t buy it anymore and they would have to some serious work to install a new one, costing as much as I paid for the guitar. That’s when I bought the Taylor.
    I will eventually get the Ibanez fixed because it was my first name brand guitar, so it has a lot of sentimental value to me.
    Your guitar sounds great by the way!

    • @jasonstallworth
      @jasonstallworth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I was considering changing the pickup in my Takamine. That seems to be where the unknown issue is. But as you mentioned, I'm not even sure if they make those pickups anymore and it'd take a lot of work to put something else in that didn't quite fit.

    I bought the Martin GPC13e Sunburst last summer. I changed the bridge pins out for Ebony pins and I have a set of Elixir 12-53’s on it and I lowered the action. I have played it everywhere and the three main things I hear are 1.) Your guitar sounds amazing. 2.) That guitar must’ve cost thousands. 3.) That guitar looks and sounds beautiful.

GREAT sound and feel. Later on, 2020, after my stroke I had to lower the action and lighten the strings as my strength in my fretting hand was lessened. At the same time had a bone nut and saddle as well a LR Baggs Lyric installed. Sounds as wonderful as ever. And I can play easier The sound is opened up and warmer. I STILL love this guitar!! Thats called a saddle at the bridge. The nut is under the headstock. The specs on that paticular guitar calls for number 11 strings. I use number 12 and thats pushing it. I also use one of these in concert with our band but I am not a beater or heavy strumer. In my opinion if one is in a small acoustic electric band nothing provides rhythm and bottom end foundational support like a good dreadnought. Very well done. I liked your presentation.
    I have the original Martin GPC-13E with mutenye hardwood back and sides.
    To get awesome sound from the Martin GPC-13E, get the Ernie Ball 2566 acoustic strings.
    It will give your GPC-13E Ziricote Road Series superior projection and clarity.
    This is a set of aluminum bronze acoustic guitar strings (.012 - .054)
    The sound of your GPC-13E with Ernie Ball 2566 will improve during the first 10 to 15 hours of play.
    While playing, this is the only way to stretch them slowly/evenly.
    Your Ziricote GPC-13E comes with a Martin MA540T (.012 - .054) string.
    MA540T nice sound that gets worse as you play, try one now that gets better as you play.
    I've seen them bring improvements to the worst acoustic guitar.
    Yeah, they are easy on the fingers.😛

    I just purchased a sc13e ,which I saw you had tried out , to gig with as I started getting nervous with my GPC28e with a LR Baggs pickup in at bars worried that something might happen to it. However the GPC definitely sounds better and the sc13 plays easier and still sounds pretty good, just brighter, not quite as full, thinking about switching out the Fishman MX pickup with a LR Baggs Anthem. Love your style and you sound great, I’d come watch you if I wasn’t 1000 miles away.

      I came so close to getting the SC13e and kinda wish I had gone that route. I believe that model is made more for gigging (I could be wrong). I’ve found the model I have is very susceptible to humidity so I bring my Takamine to my summertime outdoor gigs. But yeah the GPC 13e I have does have a lot of warmth and bottom end

    I had the exact same experience as you last week, I walked in to Guitar Center not really looking to buy anything in particular and hoping to get a look at some used ones. If anything I thought I'll take a look at the Taylor 214 or a compact one like the GS Mini. I tried a used Taylor 514ce that was listed at half price ($1800) and it sounded really nice, except it had a crack at the bottom. I tried the Martin SC-13e (I think this is the other Martin in your video too) and I just didn't prefer its sound unplugged. Besides the 514ce of course, The GPC-13e sounded the best amongst all the guitars I tried in the $1500 price range. It has a very sweet balanced sound with great sustain, with a nice bottom end that rounds out the sound beautifully. I had a final shootout with this against the 214ce with someone else playing, and the GPC-13e was the clear winner with its better bottom end and sustain. I just couldn't leave it behind and walked out with it. My wallets hurting a bit since this was an unplanned purchase, but I just love this guitar. And fully agree with your assessment of the case, its really well made. Good choice!

I couldn't believe how loud it was for being 000 depth and it seems like it will just resonate as long as you hold the note. It has the same Fishman pickups system you have. I e never plugged it in. I have a to disagree. I have a Martin GPC 16E and unplugged its very anemic sounding as it has a thinner body compared to the 13E. Now the 16E has an upgraded pickup system a Fishman VT enhanced it does not have the Fishman MXT like the 13e has. With that said, for the price, even with the better electronics and made in the Martin factory, Im selling mine for a better unplugged experience.

      Man, that's a tough one because I suffered a pinched nerve a couple of years ago and that was brutal.
      A few things to consider:
      Make sure you have a small, thin, comfortable strap (I use a regular electric guitar strap)
      If you're not already, start doing regular stretching and throw in some Yoga as that can help overall
      I also take ALA (alpha lipoic acid) each day and have since I learned about it after having a pinched nerve - this provides more oxygen to your nerve endings (wish I had known about this sooner!)

It plays so easily and after 3-4 hour gigs my hands are as fresh as when I started. Also it’s thinner than the GPC, which has the same body thickness as a dread. That will annoy my shoulder after a while. Since the pickup is all you hear live, why not get the most comfort? Anyway enjoy that Martin and if you ever want an even better live sound, upgrade that pickup to an Anthem. You’ll thank me later.

I do think it might play slightly easier than my GPC as you mentioned. But I was so fascinated by the tone and overall fullness of this thing! @@jasonstallworth I think you were mostly hearing the fullness of the guitar in the acoustic room of that store. When you hear the guitar coming out of the PA, what do you hear? About the soft vs hard case thing, it is ridiculous to spend over 1k even and have it come in a cheesy thin gig bag, your Martin soft case looks well protective though compared to others, then there's the schecters,esp,ect. That just come in a cardboard box without even a crappy gigbag,nothing at all, even my schecter km7 mklll for 2k$ came in just cardboard box, unreal. But what really kills me is my mayones Duvell bl-7 wich was 3300$ on sale new, still just a gig bag which is of similar quality and thickness as your Martin bag. I like the idea of gig bags when you have the guitars stored away in a closet since they take up a bit less space but I don't like bringing them out of house in a gig bag, I put them in back seat like I'm putting a baby in their car seat cause I'm afraid the bags just don't protect enough.
