    Super Mario Maker 2 has tons of glitches and exploits scattered all around... And the one we're covering today certainly breaks the game. With the combination of three specific items while making a level, a creator has the ability to glitch out the game and transform the world around Mario and Luigi. Join Mayro and I on a deep dive covering this "freeze glitch / door glitch", and the bizarre properties it contains.
    Special thanks to Mayro for helping out with this video! ► / @mayrosmm

    I’m waiting for people to find a glitch that lets you switch between game themes, mid course.
    Or, I’m waiting for Nintendo to implement it as a feature...
    Either works!

    • @SwankyBox
      @SwankyBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      I think it'd be really slick! A level where one side of a mountain is grassy and the other is snowy comes to mind. The tunnel through the mountain could transition it all. It'd really amplify the idea of scale and distance between areas, like how the overworld pipes in Super Mario 3D World behave.

    • @cosmicjenny4508
      @cosmicjenny4508 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      +SwankyBox Nintendo would probably limit it to one change per area, honestly.
      Another cool idea would be to have the ability to switch between, say, Super Mario Bros., and NSMBU, mid-level.

    The smear thing in computer 3d game terms is called the void, it's what happens when there is no skybox. Basically there is no background.

    • @simonbelluci
      @simonbelluci 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      furthermore it's basically because most rendering setups will render a single-color background before anything else in order to create a canvas to place objects on. note that this is NOT the background or skybox, just a referential canvas.
      the hall of mirrors effect happens because this layer, the 'background', is not rendered. the background is used to basically delete the last render by overlapping it and thus dumping the pixels, but if it doesn't do that, then the pixels remain even as the render continues updating.
      it's basically what would happen if you made a little sticky-note stack flipbook, but extended the animation off the page with scotch tape and sharpie. the images overlap because there's nothing between the last frame(s) and the current frame.

    • @simonbelluci
      @simonbelluci 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      (and yes this is regurgitating the video to a certain degree but i think 'frames haven't refreshed' is obfuscating the terminology of what's happening a little)

Nintendo is super adamant about eradicating bugs and glitches as soon as possible, so it would be extremely difficult to make a glitch video of that fashion out of SMM2 without it being a long-term ordeal.

      Yes, most likely. The background simply prints every frame without clearing the background *constantly*, as there is no skybox to hide the void. Pausing or causing the screen to fade to black would cause the game to keep showing these visuals under new information

    The smearing effect occurs because the color buffer isn't being cleared every frame. It just draws on top of the old image every frame. Since the background fills the entire screen, you would never notice.
    Kind of like painting on a canvas, if you continuously paint over the old painting, making sure to fill the canvas every time, you'll never see what's behind it. But once the entire canvas isn't being filled, it becomes obvious you're just painting over the old painting.

    The "Hall of mirrors" effect, as it is known as, is caused because computers "draw" images on a "surface" that is then displayed on screen. Unless specifically instructed to do so, the surface is never wiped clean, and instead each new frame is simply drawn on top of the previous. Under normal circumstances the previous frame is completely covered by the current, but if there are areas that don't have anything drawn over them, that area just stays as is, creating the HoM effect.

  • @__MGR_77__
    @__MGR_77__ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    @SwankyBox It's only the missing background!
    You can see this as the background of the background: The NULL Layer.
    Normally it moves an constantly renders the background, but if, for some reason, any backgroud is missing, it draws the foreground layer.
    You can test this out by drawing holes into a background image of a customizable game, M.U.G.E.N. for instance. You will see that this effect does happen right after a foreground object passed the hole, but get erased right after the background once drew over it.

    I like your theory on the horizontal/vertical scroll glitch, but I have a slightly different theory. I think that Nintendo programmed the rendering sequence to begin by rendering in the background, then anything on the foreground. The error comes into play when the vertical level has a horizontal background, meaning there is no data to draw a background from above a certain position. The reason the smearing effect happens is because the background, which serves as a form of reset, never gets rendered in, leaving the previous renders of every other element on the screen.

When the lumas sacrificed themselves to stop the black hole, a super nova occurred, and the baby luma in the second game was born and so were many more. The mother Luma must have been a red super giant that collapsed and exploded. The gases were than used to make the other lumas. Case closed

    Fun fact: nothing almost EVER clears the screen. They _update_ it. And yes, there's a difference.
    Consider your normal piece of computer memory. Programmers define the concept of a "variable" in memory as this box that can hold any kind of data for you. Setting a variable to any value makes the box keep that value until you change it, and its current contents only ever disappear from your reach if the computer loses power or is reset, you free that memory because you no longer need it, or you overwite the contents with a new value.
    In the case of games, well, when things work correctly, the game will always update the entirety of the screen with every new frame. But the screen's buffer is a piece of memory like any other. If for any reason the pixels on the screen are not updated by an incoming frame (like for example, having a void in your scene), those pixels will remain in their last state, simply because that is how all computer memory works. Actually clearing the screen buffer (blacking out the screen during Vsync before drawing) is an additional step that is generally considered a waste of resources. Other systems like the Windows and Linux desktops themselves even take advantage of the void. Unlike games, they only update specific pieces of the screen each time, and most of the time, they don't update the screen at all. They only update the pixels that need to be updated, and leave everything else be, saving tons of processing power and energy when the system is idling.
    As a bonus, try performing this glitch on a level full of tiles with all sorts of screen effects. They should be amplified by the void and give all kinds of cool results, since the effect is applied over what has been previously drawn and has already been distorted.

    @SwankyBox This is happening because every frame, the game draws the background first, then draws the level objects (mario, enemies, coins, terrain, etc.) As a result, under normal conditions, when the background is opaque, you can only see the most recently drawn background and everything drawn on top of it on any given frame, since the background is drawn over everything drawn in past frames. In a sense, the background obscures the past. However, just like with the lava at the start of the video, once you go too high and the game has nothing to draw, the background is essentially transparent; the background draw does nothing. As a result, the game is effectively only drawing objects, and with no background to obscure it, the trail of past draws is visible. A similar glitch happens in the original DOOM when you do the void glitch.

    the foreground is smeared when there is no background
    because everything is rendered on top of the last frame.
    most game engines are set by default to start rendering every frame by filling it with a color, so that most game devs will not see the smear background effect - this is named 'screen clearing'.
    but many big studios disable screen clearing because their games always have much more advanced backgrounds that completely override anything (this means, they already clear the screen, and make the game engine's built-in screen clearing effect just an unneeded extra step).
    only in cases like with this glitch do we see what happens when a game does not have screen clearing enabled and does not have a background set to override empty spaces.

    • @sosasees
      @sosasees 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      some indie games also have advanced backgrounds that make screen clearing redundant,
      but indie devs tend to not disable screen clearing because
      • their games always start out with a 1-color background
      • when they make advanced backgrounds, chunks of the original background from the screen clearing effect may still be visible
      • even if they switch completely to self-clearing backgrounds, they don't think to disable screen clearing
      • the impact of disabling screen clearing is almost nothing. there are always bigger performance issues that could be fixed

    If I had to guess, the game doesn't clear the screen before drawing the next frame, it just draws layers in ascending Z order. That means that it is constantly smeared, but the backdrop hides the smeary mess. It is more optimized than clearing the entire screen every frame. Since the backdrop has limited height, it isn't drawn if Mario is too high on the level, allowing the player to see gaze upon the V O I D.

  • @adamchatham1536
    @adamchatham1536 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Huh, neat. If I had to guess the game is using a front and back buffer. The rendering pipepline renders to the back buffer, switches it with the front buffer and the back buffer gets cleared. If the back buffer doesnt get cleared, it will take the old images and redraw elements on it creating this painting effect.

    Hey swanky!
    The idea of a level that can only be beaten using this glitch like the tunnel you said would be cool, but isn’t it impossible to create, since this glitch isn’t possible to reproduce in the stage editor?

    Tiny bit more informative info about the redrawing glitch
    Basically, nintendo only erases the bit of the screen that the player should see, if they tried erasing more of the screen, it could make things a tiny bit slower. Its just basic optimization. I think nintendo only erases and redraws areas that need to be redrawn or erased, again, for optimization. things could slow down the more boxes the game has to draw. Probably a minor performance improvement, and most likely an automatic game engine feature too to speed up improvement
    Source: i made a dumb basic platformer in python, and had to do a little bit of simple graphics work, and had to optimize it a lot. Use game engines kids, or dont, because its fun to make your own

    Rather than waste time blanking the screen, because the background is always there on the whole screen the game just draws that over everything. Since there's nothing to draw, that's why it's a mess.

    So that's what causes smearing in games...I've seen this happen, but in a different game. Specifically, in Petz 4 from PFMagic, in the "playscene editor" there is a tutorial playscene "TV Room" where it teaches you how to make them. After saving the new playscene, and then going into it with your petz, there is a button on the "TV screen" part of the playscene...if you interact with it (i.e.: turn it to 'on') it doesn't really show anything on the 'screen'...until your petz moves in front of it, and then that small area of the playscene does the smearing effect. I always found it so weird, but this makes me understand it better...kinda? It's probably something else innitially causing it that I don't understand, but it does look very similar.

    You may have a small misconception about how the game “clears out” the area involving the background. In most game engines, clearing the screen before drawing sprites on top of it is inefficient. Instead, the game just re-draws the background image first, then draws the other objects on top of it. But because there is no background being drawn, the previously drawn image stays behind. The game’s drawing process isn’t “glitching out,” it just isn’t drawing the background in front of the old drawing
