Toad's Castle Calamity is inspired by a series of web animations about Toad destroying castles, which in turn is inspired by those end of world cutscenes in Super Mario World that Dave mentioned.
you're the first person I've seen play the harder choices level that didn't kill the spike helmet with the star or actually try to fall into the goal. nice

For those who don't want to read the description, this is another episode of the Super Wagon World super world. I wish this could be said at the beginning of the video though, just a small introduction to the content instead of going straight into a recording.

Every time a streamer fails to get the reference in Toad's Castle Calamity, I feel a little older. 😢 It's not just a reference to the SMW post-castle animations; it's a reference to a series of old Newgrounds Flash animations where Mario tries to destroy a castle and things keep going wrong, in increasingly wacky ways.

I understand the "Toad's castle calamity" ! Effectively, Mario often blows up the castle he just won over. But there is a series of videos on TH-cam, I watched when I was younger, called "Mario calamity", where Mario tries to destroy the castle, and for some reason, it never works ! That a reference to that, I think !

Oh, my bad, I was thinking of the first level, the choice between the CP and the flag. Yeah, there is a one way pointing up behind the end card, you can see it to the left and right of the end card.
I avoided that one because I wanted to see if they locked me in the hole, and how they were going to kill me, before I ended the level. It'd be more like dodging a troll if I wasn't trying to die.

That first level might benefit from some mechanism that forces you to make a quick decision, like having a winged muncher in the pipe
This is one of my favorite worlds, the levels are all so creative and ridiculous. just a fun time

Castle calamity: the spike wall was the castle mario couldn't destroy no matter how many times he hit the plunger. The fuse finally destroys the castle as mario approaches and leaves mario charred

I never knew you could flame pokeys. I feel they shouldn’t be flamed for the same reason then introduced them, at least in SMW, at Yoshi’s Island level 4. If u do not have a Yoshi, the pokeys are only 2, maybe 3 parts tall… but with Yoshi always 5. No fireball destruction on those dudes.

How are goombas able to come out of sides of pipes, how are things able to phase into existence, how are you able to be pushed half a block underneath the ground & remain stuck for a full second in a block, how can i visible walls be welded into being in front of bushes, how can items just overlap pre-existing objects in the middle of playing a level, how can you just die in thin air with the cause of death not being a time-over-
I have SO many questions as to how that's possible considering the limitations of SMM2, and my questions may never be outright answered...
