    I knew the fans were set high but didn't know it was set that high! My 03 is always at 220 even after I blew out the radiator. Watched it hit 235 for the first time this summer while in traffic, kills me inside but keep reminding myself this was gm's design. Great stuff as always!

    Good information, thanks. I was aware of modern engines running better hot but not to the extent of almost 230 F.
    Just finished installing an 25% underdrive damper and have been a little concerned about the coolant temp and ordered a 160 F thermostat .
    Luckily ,if you want, Summit send me the wrong one( too long) so I reinstalled the original
    186 F.
    I guess I won’t have to freak out seeing temps in the 220 F in traffic.
    BTW, I live north of the 49th.

    I had my fan temps tuned lower too, and It did make a difference.
    I run around 196 normally.

    Terrific as Always! I had a rad fluid change done in the spring. Also bought a new coolant cap. It’s running hot sitting in traffic (or hotter then it historically did.) It’s due for a condenser-radiator clean out. Thanks for showing me how to get the rad fans out!! I’ll get the shop to see what the fans are tuned to as well.

    Great info and video quality as usual also Excellent tip for new C5 owners out there. I did mine a few days after I bought it. It had never been done by any one for the 1st 50,000 miles of its life. They had plastic bags from the grocery store, dirt, bugs, feathers, grass etc. I pulled about 2 dustpans full of stuff out.
    After that I made a screen out of 1/4 x1/4 hardware cloth to protect the condenser from getting hit with rocks and debris cause I’m on the interstate most of the time I’m driving.
    It’s been a year that I’ve had the screen on and haven’t had anymore issues with build up in the Radiator. Also the screen does not interfere with airflow at all and my temps stay very consistent. I’m also located in south Louisiana where we have long hot summers and high humidity. Even when I get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in New Orleans might temps always stay the same.

    Thank you for showing the stock tune data. 220 is perfectly normal. I guess in a lifetime of previous vehicles 220 degrees was bad news.

    Good information with my 04. I bought some 1/2 inch pvc and caped off one end put a hose adapter on the other end drilled 2 holes at the caped end fits nicely and the water cleans well and keeps the system running smoothly with the a/c on on a hot fla day runs 180 f all day i do have the 160 thermostat black on black long tube headers btr stage 4 cam i clean it the radiator area all the time and i do not use dexcool i use distilled water and hyperlube for cooling i use amsoil 10W40 z rod change the filter every 800/1,000 miles since i had the rpm level 5 transmission put in the transmission temp hit 154 one time runs around 143 the rear get amsoil 75/90 server gear keeping everything fresh and clean is the key to a long and enjoyable experience with your corvette stay safe and good traveling every one

      You are at the right channel. Unbiased and accurate content. As an owner of a C5, this is one of the few channels I always visit. These C5’s are old and some years have issues. Most are small, but a few are worth seriously considering. Best of luck with your future C5 search.

    I had a problem last fall and when I pulled it out it was completely plugged! Instead of putting it back in I opted for a double core radiator from Worley Cooling. They said exact fit,but not so much . However it was $350 cheaper than DeWitts and with a little extra trimming I got it in and it works great. Never goes above 196. Best thing l have done to the car! 👍🙋‍♂️🖖🏻

    0:50 I took the thermostat out of my c4 and I tested it in water against a 160. btw the old one was also an 160F and the new one opened wider so it’s possible a lower tstat to allow more fluid flow than a stock one. Anyway the car overheats the same way, I suspect clogged preconverters.
    235F the highest I recorded on the digital meter on racetrack but immediately after that I began a cooling lap high speed - light throttle. at 226 I have both fans running in my c4 1991
    if the car has overheating problems by design it’s possible to design a water mist system with distilled water. that should give it significant cooling improvement. all you need is a 12V 5bar+ pump, a few nozzles, tube, fittings, then electronic modules: a relay, thermostat or arduino module with thermistor.

    I used an air wand like you have. I straightened it out and put a screw in then end of it. I then filed a notch in the side of it near the tip. I can slide it between the fans and the radiator to blow it out without having to remove the fans. I put a thin piece of wood between the radiator and the condenser so that I don't blow the debris from the radiator into the condenser. I also blow it back to front (I think you do too). Side note. I live in the desert. The hottest my C-5 gets in traffic is about 111 degrees. I have driven in temperatures over 110 and my car will be between 194 and 197 degrees.

    I like to keep the rads clean, but I think I will get a Coot It V3 just to have some insurance. I hit 220 in Branson, MO last time. It was 97 outside. HP Tuners for my pickup was $650. I don't want to do that again just to change the fan tune. Very informative video again. You do a great job every time.

    A low temp thermostat definitely helped lower my engine temps. And I live in Las Vegas.

      How? Unless you have a giant radiator with good fans, it is not going to run under 180 in traffic. That is what it would take to get to run cooler than the stock T-stat IMO.

    My 1995 LT1 Camaro had a bad sending unit hot lead wire. Tracing the fault was costing me. When ever it got hot. i just turned on the Heater or the AC and it brought the temps down.

    I did two things to really make the difference. Installed an aluminum radiator by DeWitt and second, installed a fob remote to control my secondary fan manually at any time. But, it never gets over 195 and I live in a high desert. So, on a day of 100 and stuck in traffic, my ZO6 runs at 190 with no fan fob activated. Just double safety as this alleviated my problem. Plus, I switched to the green antifreeze as it is better.

      That new radiator would work super well just having your stock fans tuned to come on a bit earlier too. Nothing wrong with 200 IMO, I just don't like being 215 and above... Unless I am at the track, then 185-195 is good!

    I've seen 235-240 in my 2004 Z06. But i live in texas and it was 98-100 degrees outside. I was on a farm market highway doing about 60-90 miles an hour in 3rd/4th gear. I laid off the throttle a bit and temps started to drop. I know the radiator is probably dirty, but I may have a fan issue as well. Ever since that day I watch the temp gauge every time i take the car out.

    I washed my radiator off from back to front with a garden hose and a deflector. Huge improvement. But! I’m still having over heating problems. The fan fuses are fine. I don’t like the high temp fan tune from the factory. Going to look into lower them.

    The radiator genie tool is remarkably effective at cleaning out the rad and condenser too. Much easier than removing anything.

    Thanks for the content sir. Can you please point me in the right direction for HP tuners? There are a number of different plug ins available for widely varying prices and I'm not sure which one I need. I'd like to be able to adjust my fan thresholds as you've done, as well as do things like deprogram the shift light if/when I decide to to the CAGS bypass in the future.

      I just went to their website. I think something is broken at the moment. If you just want to do basic things you could do the base model for $399 + you would need 2 credits (2x49.99) for a C5 corvette.

    Love your videos. What type of air compressor did you use? Max PSI, brand, etc.? Yesterday, my 03 Z06 reached 250 degrees while coming home from the gym. Going to clean the radiator and see whether or not it corrects it.

      150 psi. Anything over 100 will do. If it's really dirty, it might be worth the time to remove the fans and the shroud so that you can really get at it and remember to blow it forward not towards the engine. Good luck!

    Love your videos - very informative. I live in the High Desert of Arizona and my C5 has ran real warm since I've owned her. Straight off I replaced the stock radiator with a 4 row for a Caddie X series, quite a bit bigger and the front cover doesn't fit tight , about a inch of opening between the radiator and the front cover. ???? (Thinking about fabbing up a new cover from Aluminum that fits tight.) Anyway, I've replaced the fans, thermostat (3x) and water pump. I have the fans on a manual switch and relay and she still runs warmer than I like. Do you think the open gap between the radiator and the front cover may have something to do with it?? ( Instead of the air going thru the radiator, it's going around the the radiator.) I'll watch to see your answer.

    New C5 owner and learning a lot from your videos. Should you put something between the rad and the condenser to stop cross contamination while blowing through them?

      I don't think so. If it came in from the front and you're blowing it forward from the rear it should push out. Never blow from the front towards the rear because you might just impact things further into the radiator or condenser.

    Friend, amazon sells a water and blower wand that is skinny and fits in without having to remove parts. Works wonderful. Also, when you blow out your radiator, put a piece of cardboard between it and your condenser so your not blowing dirt from the radiator into the condenser. In any event, right idea.

      Friend - yep, Radiator geni. Still need to remove the fan shroud to get at most of the radiator IMO. Your cardboard idea is not terribly helpful - it blocks airflow - and airflow is what you need to drive the crud back out towards the front. The big chunks are stuck to the front of the condenser, the smaller junk that made it in from the front can be blown back out the front. Looks like we disagree on methodology. Where are the myth-busters when you need them. At any rate - both methods are better than the head in the sand method.

      @@Toys4Life Ok, I'll tell you what. Many thanks to you TH-cam guys for putting these videos up. Just spent 3 hours cleaning condenser and radiator fins on a "running hot vet". Worked like a charm. I would never have guessed that much dirt and grit got up in there. In defense of GM, the design is very good. My kids 1998 C5 condenser and radiator are in fantastic shape, just were clogged with dirt. I'm in Vegas - a dirty, dusty town, but I can see where this would be common throughout the desert southwest.

    My car usually runs stock at 221-223 while driving most speeds and sitting in traffic, now if I really get on it during a hot day I’ve seen 235-239 max but cools down back to 217 when I get off it. Now my fans are always on, first one kicks on at 200 I believe and idk about the 2nd, however they never turn off and can never get the car below 217 on summer days and never below about 208 on cool days. Plan on coolant flushing, checking the thermostat, cleaning out between the radiator and condenser, replacing air filters, and possibly replacing the condenser and radiator if needed after the first things. Idk if anyone will see this but would def like some advice on what definitely needs done here

      Clean and blow both the condenser and radiator out (remove the fans& shroud so you can get at it good) and blow from the engine bay forward. On the front of the condenser check for cooked thick bug guts that plug the fins. If there are a lot, try a bug cleaner first to try to loosen the hardened guts up.

    What did you do with the sway bar? My fan shroud is completely blocked by my sway bar. It makes the 15 min job a lot longer.

    I hope I'm reaching the author of this video...If not, please tell me how to do that.......I have a 2000 C-5 and am having the overheating problem. I'm the original owner and it's 2023. The temp never exceeded 220 in any conditions on Long Island for 22 years. The original factory coolant was emptied, blown out and replaced in 2002. NY....where's there's plenty of traffic. I have replaced the fan assembly, thermostat & fan temp sensor. I've cleaned the radiator & condensor as you suggested & blown out the metal coolant tube connecting the two sides of the L & R engine block. When I turn the car on at cold...The radiator hoses get hot in the order of flow as does the radiator. In traffic at a light and at 42 degrees outside, the digital computer read-out went to 238. As I said....It never rose above 220 till this year. Please help if you know the next step. The pump and radiator seem fine and the system has been flushed, air locks cleared and fluid level is always full. No sign of a leak anywhere including where the pump mounts to the block. Thank you.

      I would use an IR temperature gun and double check various spots on the cylinder head and radiator hoses to see if it agrees. It could just be your gauges reading wrong, a problem with the sending unit, wiring or instrument cluster. Has it actually boiled over at all and spewed coolant out?

    Hi! Thanks for the video you are great. I just bought a 2008 C6 with the LS3, and in one of the first drivings i got stuck on traffic and the gauge was showing between 220-230. I got super worried of course bc i didn't know this. Please if you or someone can confirm this is true for my model too i would be glad. Thanks!

      85% sure that is normal - I would have to look at a stock tune for an 08 LS3 to get to 100%

      I think that would be fine- but you still need air pressure to dislodge debris. Cars are moving fast which really crams crud in there, home ac is just sucking in air at relatively ow speeds.

    I recently just did a heads-Cam-Intake-Exhaust upgrade with all accessories like trunnion and oil pump and chain upgrades. I’m running up into the 230s, but it takes about 20 minutes of running to get up to that. What do you think may be causing that heat spike. Keep in mind that I added a bigger radiator, a new condenser and an external trans cooler. The vehicle has a start up tune and that’s about it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Got a C6 question if you can help, our car was hit in the left front corner, it was a fairly light impact not to bad, but it has caused an overheating issue that the insurance adjuster cannot figure out, it was not overheating prior to the hit, do you know what could be the possible issue from a left corner impact,
    I noticed the air intake knocked loose but that doesn't seem to be the main issue.
    It overheated and dumped all fluid but adjuster cannot see a damaged hose or damage that would cause it.
    I've worked on many cars and they don't usually dump fluid without a hose bust or knocked loose so it's not making sense to me.

      Something pinching a radiator hose? Insurance adjuster typically isn't going to try to diagnose anything, they are just going to look at the physical condition and create an estimate of parts and labor to repair is my understanding. Something from the impact sever a wire leading to your cooling fans?

      @@Toys4Life thank you, it has to be something small like that, like I said it wasn't a hard impact but something has it over heating, the dealership has the adjuster who works with them on site so I am going to get another shop to look at it without a "friendly" adjuster on site.

    Is my automatic transmission in my C5 supposed to get up to 235 degrees as well? That is what is frustrating to me. The engine runs hot which in turn makes my trans run hot. I am installing a trans cooler but that then blocks even more airflow through the condenser and radiator. The trans is not supposed to get over 200 degrees from what I hear, but it is cooled within the radiator.

      IMO any mesh that would be fine enough to keep a lot of stuff out would hinder flow - I would just count on cleaning every once in a while - depending on the conditions of where you live. Pays to take a peek often - in case something like part of a bag gets stuck up in there!

      Good Eye sir! I did the radiator cleaning at the same time as I was replacing the harmonic balancer. As such, I already had removed the sway bar as part of that job. I would have to take a good look to be 100% certain, but I don't believe it is required to do the job. Even if it is, it is very easy to drop the sway bar and only takes 5 minutes. Thanks for pointing that out!

      It depends on how clogged it is and the ambient air temperatures in your area. 220 in stop and go traffic is not unusual.

    Wondering if, since you have computer tuning capability, why not reduce coolant temp down a little further, say 190? I know heat is the enemy of both horsepower and longevity. Would that much of a lower temp be possible? Would it not increase performance, especially since your ‘Vette is supercharged? NOT an expert myself, and not being snarky, just honest curiosity.

      I do that for when I'm at the track, but for everyday use it's just too much wear and tear in the fans and really doesn't add a tremendous amount for daily driving.

      @@Toys4Life Totally agree. Thermodynamics make power. (Retired nuclear power worker.) Hotter operating temperatures in modern cars are normal. Many cannot forget the past when it comes to coolant temperatures. Your comments on the thermostat and dirty radiator is good advice.

    I just don't think removing that fan was necessary. That long nosed air nozzle would easily have gone in and around the blades. Besides most people don't have a lift. Jacking it up and getting a couple jackstands under it would be the best they can do.
    Since the early 70s even in the 60s people have complained about vetts running hot.

      It would be very difficult to do a good job with the shroud and fans blocking access. Remember you need to go straight through the fins so as to not bend them and to also have a chance to also blow though the condenser. If you are not straight on you risk bending them (with high pressure) and losing airspeed which will limit the ability to have enough airspeed to do a good job on the condenser as well.

      If you live in areas that do not freeze (Leaves me out in MN) then that could be of some benefit! Still, these cars are 20 years old and most have some blockage that should be cleaned if possible.
