New (to me) JD300 industrial tractor.

  • I bought this John Deere recently and slowly getting it fixed up. It's an industrial John Deere which is why it's yellow and not green. The serial plate is gone but they built these from 1965-1973. Needed it for moving big bales and 2000+ pound spent grain totes from the local brewery. The other Kubota tractor available to me couldn't quite handle that weight.
    The Bad:
The ignition switch is all gummed up and they key is gone. None of the lights work. Eight of the loader hydraulic lines need replacing as well as a couple of the hydraulic fittings. The seat is trashed and it needs a new one. None of the gauges work. And it has a substantial fuel leak.
    The Good:
Starts up really well with the push button start I temporarily wired into it. The hydraulics are extremely strong for it's size. It can lift 3,000 pounds at the pins. It has a working 3-point and PTO. Open ROPS (which many of these didn't have). The steering is pretty tight. It burns clean for a 50 year old tractor.
Though it needs a lot of work I only paid $3,800 for it so I'm feeling good about the purchase. I'll put up another video when it's cleaned up.

Dad picked up same in 1988. I'm not much of a mech and have managed to keep it running. The hydraulic shower has happened twice to me. Yours was possibly simpler because it wasn't hot yet. Both times I was coated in dust from scraping ranch roads. Tractor and fluids at operating temperature as I am working. No warning and not much of a sound until the fluid hit rops roof. Instant mud puppy me.

Ah man, that sounds bad. Yea, when I got showered I had just started it up so at least it wasn't hot.
Last year I was using a Kubota to cut first cutting hay much later than normal because the rain didn't stop till late June. Grass was so tall by then, it wrapped around the pto shaft into a giant grass ball in about three seconds and tore all three hydraulic hoses apart as they come out of the back of the tractor to the mower. I got showered that time to and then had a fun trip to Napa Autoparts to build three new hoses at $600. Painful day.

I have a John Deere 2040...its set up very similar to your tractor, even painted yellow. It also has the exact same roll over protection/canopy set-up.
My loader doesnt appear to be a John Deere, loader...and I've had the hardest time trying to identify it.
I am the 4th owner of the tractor. Apparently it started with the Texas Department of Corrections, then went to small ranch in central Texas, I bought it from 2 guys who used it on their deer lease, near Ranger, Tx for about 7 or 8 years. Fortunately one of them was a diesel mechanic, and did a lot of work on it, not long before I bought it. Its a 1976 model and runs like a top. Everything operates as it should. I just bought 4 acres of raw land, and use the tractor for all kinds of things, as we get everything move-in ready.
I was always s a Ford guy when it came to tractors, but I'm a convert now. I really like the old 2040.
I think once we get our land whipped into shape, I may get rid of the 2040 and look at something else. I like the 300 tractors... I'd like to maybe get one without a loader eventually. Just something to do the brush hogging, gardening stuff, and other light to medium duty jobs.
Thats a cool tractor you've got there.

I own the same model, Someone converted it to outside disk brakes and removed the factory brake master cylinder. If you ever get time or have to work on the brakes I hop you can video doing it so I will have some ideal what to look for My manual doesn't go into any detail. Thank you for sharing.

It would be nice if you would post a video on the start up process for the jd300. It would be appreciated.

I sold it a couple years ago, sorry. As I recall, it was wired for a push button start. Turned the key on, and gave it a few seconds and then pushed the start button to turn it over. I let all my deisel stuff idle for a minute before running it. Three minutes if it's below freezing

Nice! Looks like you got a good deal. Do you still own this tractor? I purchased one last year with a backhoe attachment. I have been noticing that sometimes it won't go over a small bump, mostly in reverse but sometimes in fwd. The front loader works great and so does the backhoe. The last owner changed all the filters and fluids and rebuild the hydraulic pump so I don't think it's a clogged filter. I'm thinking I'm going to have to split the tractor and rebuild the trany but since it seems intermittent, maybe it's just a bad seal somewhere 🤷‍♂️
I also noticed that when I try and use higher gears the trany won't engage all the way and stop moving if the grounds not level.

Sorry for the slow response. I ended up selling it a while back. It's a stout machine but not great for hay work. I've got a couple old massey fergusons now, a 135 and a 175.
If you haven't already, i'd check the filters anyway even if the last guy said they were replaced. Theyre a pain to get off because they're upside down under the tractor but it'd be good to know first hand. If the hydraulic system has indeed been gone through, then yea it's maybe a transmission issue. If he went through the whole hydraulic system though, it could just as easily be something stuck in the hydraulic lines. When the hydraulic pumps blow apart little pieces of it can go down the line and sometimes not found right away. If the last guy had to rebuild everything maybe the last pump blew apart like that. No major leaks?

@@alexherman1803 thanks for the reply! After using it for a little while the brakes stopped working and are a bit intermittent so yeah probably crap in the system. One of the front cylinders leak a bit. This year I've gone through almost a gallon of hydraulic oil. At the beginning of the year I started digging an underground Garden. I only got down to about six feet before it got too hot. I noticed when I back out of the hole that the transmission will start slipping if I don't Raise the the front bucket. I believe it's just lowering the idle enough for the clutches to grab. The trany seems OK if I drive uphill but reverse not so much. I noticed a foot lever and lever on the left side I believe. Do you have any idea what it does? I've tried using it but don't really notice anything but maybe a very slight faster gear?

@@Laurel-Crowned There's two PTO selector levers on that side and a differential lock. Here's a link to a controls and instruments page from the operators manual which I still have.
      Edit: sorry forgot link

Also have a JD300 diesel industrial loader, S/N 001831U in very good condition.
Trying to obtain the exact wiring diagram for this machine.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Last spring i bought almost the same tractor in rough shape im slowly restoring it to use around the house. I have a gas motor is your diesel?

    • @alexherman1803
      @alexherman1803  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yea its diesel. I sold it last summer though and bought a case 1390 because I needed the additional hydraulic hookups on the back for hay implements and the cab is nice in winter. I did like that old 300 though. Pound for pound I don't know what else has the same kind of lifting power for that size tractor.

Hi , I have same tractor , but no pto , 3 point hitch or drawbar . I want to add a 3 point and drawbar and have a couple questions, I have a couple large tabs on the back of my loader frame , is this where your lower 3 point lift arms are mounted ? At the start of the video we can see a pedal , just ahead of the differential left of the seat , mine has it but seems not to be hooked to anything . I agree that the loader is stronger than ag loaders , I've used loaders rated for 130 hp tractors that were nowhere close to as heavy built

    • @alexherman1803
      @alexherman1803  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yea there are tabs or posts just behind the rear axle shown at this time stamp th-cam.com/video/trCh6kK8qtM/w-d-xo.html. That left foot lever is really odd indeed. You're talking about the one just in front of the pto lever? In the manual it calls it a "Mid PTO selector". Mine never did anything that I was aware of and to be honest I don't understand what a "mid" pto even is. My PTO worked just fine but required the clutch to be engaged. I just sold the JD 300 last month and bought a 1982 Case 1390. I still have the digital manual for the JD 300 if you have other questions.

@@alexherman1803 thanks for reply , ok I think I will mount lower arms to those and jury rig a rock shaft. The mid pto was on the front of the trans. Pointing forward for a belly mower or snow blower but I have never seen a shift lever , they just ran at the same time as rear . I think you will be happy with your case , the little john deere has a lot of problem with 2000 lb bales . My jd 4630 was a lot better , just way to hard to start at -20 or colder , and the loader was not as good

    • @alexherman1803

@@lesgallivan4159 Interesting. Yea mine handled big bales and grain totes fine but that was with that box scraper on as a counter weight plus the wheel weights. -20 F? That's pretty damn cold. Diesel starts to gel a little around that temp. Maybe having a coolant heater and a block heater working in tandem would help.

@@alexherman1803 1500 watt circ heater , block heater , oil pan heater , 2000 amps of battery, tarped in , still have to let it run for couple hours before hydraulics would work , -20 wasn't to bad ,-40 was bad , colder than that I just left it run all night . Thats why I bought the 300
