The farm that I work on, we've purchased three of these steering valves, best thing we ever did. The valve is lighter,so it's easier to handle. We've had no problems. We will be getting more of these In the future for our other 4020's. We have 20 of these tractors
Good job on steering. Good job on steamer too and the mod to add water. Looking forward to seeing board form and how that works. Enjoy watching your Dad be creative and make stuff and product. His subject of wood working, would certainly make a good channel I think!!
Comment on steam box You need a high point vent to purge the air out or box Air will not transfer heat to the wood like steam This will help in saturating the whole board Enjoy the interaction with your dad This will help your channel a bunch The channels I enjoy most is the ones that has this interaction Keep out the good work
As much as I like the modern tractors you have serviced I've been having more fun with the 4020. Also your speadsheets are very impressive. I'm glad your Dad's getting to be a part of the channel.
Your dad made great job of making his steamer just need to make a a frame the shape he wants to bend them. That was a good kit you got for your steering.
hey!! 13:43 my tommy copper compression sox match your shirt!!! LOL it was funny in my head... imagine my foot up by the monitor checking the blu tones lol sigh... shouldn't hit enter shouldn't hit en
Although somewhat troublesome to fit that steering valve system seems to work exactly as you would wish. My Dad, used to make walking sticks as a hobby from wood growing in the hedgerows. Often hazel, ash or holly were the prime choice. He used steam in a pipe to soften them to get them straight and then fixed them to a length of steel to cool down and dry out. They usually came out ramrod straight and stayed that way even if they became wet.
Hiya, here in the UK every time I've seen wood seamers they've used wallpaper strippers as the steam source. A 3ltr pressurized box with an electric heating element. The only outlet from the see-through box is a hose to the steam box.
Your dad's idea is great, but maybe need an exterior boiler and route the steam through the steamer. He already has the fittings on the tube. Add another tee to the above the pressure gauge and put the popoff valve above it. Run the steam inlet at the bottom and the return at the top.
When I worked in Ag Retail right out of college we used and sold AgExplore products. If so remember right they had some really good micronutrient packs that worked pretty good and some Nitrogen stabilizer that we really liked and worked really good. I think it’s worth looking into and trying a few products
I was 955 so that's 5 more than the average you said :) When you talked about forms for the wood it made me think of videos I've seen on here of them making a grand piano. They use forms on both sides like you are thinking you need. Maybe one of those videos would give you ideas
I’m thinking an external tank plumbed to inject steam in the box would be the way to go. Also, from watching boat builders, (Acorn to Arabella) I don’t think you need pressure, just steam. They even used bags in a pinch.
Well now it looks like I'm gonna need to replace my steering column you made it look easy I was wondering what the price if you don't mind telling us that that thing cost thank you for your videos I learned so much. Tell your dad hes a genius cause that is quite a feat to get bored the band.
When I refinished my basement I bought some stuff it was called Pole rap and it worked out really good you can probably get at Lowe's or home depot I am sure you can find it. Carl online
Can you tell me if a 3010 Steering Valve from a 3010 diesel tractor interchange with a 3010 gas engine tractor? I have access to one and need to know whether to buy one from a gas burner. Thanks
I have a problem with my JD 4320 steering wheel. I have change the steering wheel box kit two times, change oil filter, also I change the two shafts infront and the problem is still their. The problem is that the steering get hard on one side and when driving it automatically move to one side. Any help or rec?
@BorderViewFarms I'm assuming that this is a machine shop that's local to you built it or is it available commercially because I am up in Saskatchewan Canada just wondering if it was available in Canada
You're slipping, Nathan. I can't believe you didn't repaint the bracket you moved from the old to new steering valve, LOL! I don't remember if you said before, has the engine on the 4020 been rebuilt? I know you repainted it years ago be wasn't sure what mechanically (major stuff) had been done.
Basically the colder a solution gets the less solids can stay in solution. 32% is diluted to 28% so that the concentration of solids is lower and it won't "salt-out"
Because you have to be able to go left and right if the engine stalls. It's much more complicated because of the needed safety of being able to steer without power.
so i am not the only one who likes the old operators manuals !
Really like seeing your dad on here.
It was nice to see around the 13:25 mark and beyond, "Dad and Lad" working on their projects,.....precious.
Congrats on 15k. Don't understand why this channel doesn't have 115k. Or more. Great videos with dad in them.
Glad to see your Dad in more videos and the steering box was the main problem.

You have such positive content on your channel. I look forward to each episode.
We take cellphone pictures as we disassemble all of our equipment, tractors, trucks, etc. Makes putting them back together...MUCH easier.
Best tractor John Deere made 4020 and nice seeing your dad in more videos
Thanks for the video . Been off work all week due to weather so your videos are keeping me from going crazy.

I have only filthy j d stuff to fix and no workshops . you are so clean and tidy .

Your dad sure does come up with some good ideas. Great video
Scan the old 4020 manual before it falls apart that way you’ll always have a colored copy on file with grandfather’s hand writing
As much as I like the modern tractors you have serviced I've been having more fun with the 4020.
Also your speadsheets are very impressive.

You’re dad is very smart man
I got 2 4020s have original manual also congrats on keeping records
Your dad made great job of making his steamer just need to make a a frame the shape he wants to bend them.

Nice to see that steering work as it should👍.They are awesome tractors for sure. Wish we had one. I love our 4440 though.
GOOD MORNING NATHAN!!! :)
oh that was me lol hahahaha
I AM NOT A BOT :) lol

You should've used a steering wheel puller and the shaft would not have broken. Lacking some details but not a bad video ... thank you for sharing

Great inventing and fabricating Mr Baker. (You too Nathan!!)
Those old books are cool! We have some for our old molines but we lost most of em in a shop fire

Nice job sir👍🏻👍🏻
Helpful video, who makes that replacement steering valve/column?

The best way to bend that wood is to make kerf cuts on the back and no steam needed

$1050 plus shipping
How much were the other options?
I never got prices on rebuilding ours but a reman of the original style was still around $1,000 plus a $200 core charge.

Yes the engine was overhauled in 2006 roughly 14,800 hrs. It's possible it was done previously to that but I don't have a record of it.
No painting of bracket or backside of the oil pan on the air cleaner and paints the parts on the planter.
That how you bend bows for lobster traps same proses
Where did you buy that steering column from?
Abilene Machine
What was the old globe that is obsolete now?
StarFire iTC
Where did you get the steering valve assembly?
Any update on this question?
Farmland tractor supply
Thinner boards work better.
how come some people use 32% nitrogen and others use 28%? what’s the difference?
Ability to store it through the cold weather. 32% will salt out when it gets to 32*, 28% salts out at 0* 28% is just 32% cut with water.
What does salt out mean? Nitrogen can leach/evaporate I understand but never heard salt out.
Basically the colder a solution gets the less solids can stay in solution. 32% is diluted to 28% so that the concentration of solids is lower and it won't "salt-out"
Why in the world is there so many lines just to go left&right???
Because you have to be able to go left and right if the engine stalls. It's much more complicated because of the needed safety of being able to steer without power.
Need to bend a little at a time
You sound hung over
