      I don't hammock camp. I would but most deserts don't have real trees for hammocks. Shug's channel is one of my favorites. So much talent and knowledge.

      I tried it but with 2 herniated discs in my lower back it did not help any and was actually more uncomfortable than ground dwelling. I had many people with back problems tell me it's much better for them. Yes I love watching Shug I get something from everyone of his videos. Even though I don't hammock camp I like knowing about it and he seems to have experience with almost all the different options.

    I'm new to your channel Shug, and getting into hammocking (again). I've had a HH Expedition Classic XL for years now, but haven't used it much. I'm having 2QZQ do Mod #4 to add zips to remove the bug net. Not a big fan of the HH attachment system, and thinking of going to the twin descender rings and continuous loop suspension as you show here. First I have to get my hammock back from DutchGear with the mod completed. :-) Thanks for posting all these videos - they're really helpful - and entertaining to boot!

    Would have liked to see that descender ring fail in slow-mo a second time around with appropriate sound effects.
    That hat looks pretty well made. I mean, not like a typical "thing I gotta wear cuz my aunt made it and mom makes me put it on when she comes to visit" kinda thing. It actually looks like a tight wool thread pattern that will hold up to regular use.

    Hi Shug, I’ve been watching a bunch of your videos as I have just got my first hammock (wise owl double) as a present. I don’t really like the loop straps that came with and was wondering what 1 or 2 options you would recommend to replace them? I like the idea of cam buckles or Whoopie sling but wanted your opinion as I am just starting out and didn’t want to wast money. Thanks again for any help:)

    • @shugemery

      Cinch buckles are a nor brainer. I am a whoopie sling user but started with cinch buckles. I still use them fairly often.

    @garlandbest6322 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, so I have an ENO knock-off, with steel S-hooks on each end of the hammock. For straps I use cargo straps I already owned, hook them around the trees using their own S-hooks. I then tie a slippery half hitch in the strap with a long loop, hook the hammock S-hook in the loop, make the loops larger or smaller to adjust the hammock, then tie another slippery half hitch at the back of the first half hitch to fix it in place, like you did on the descender rings. Is this viable, or are there drawbacks to what I am doing?

    I educated a tree roper the other day. I try to be nice and just let them know that in one of the parks I camp, hammocks aren't allowed because of people tearing up a tree with rope. I was guilty in my early batman days.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Years and years ago I was guilty as well. I'm glad to see most off shelf hammocks coming with straps these days. Though I do think Nature and woodpeckers and stuff are tough on trees too. Also just lookout the bare muddy ground where tents go. It is unsightly to me sometimes. I think many Parks are really kinda uneducated on hammock camping so I always tote a hammock stand for State Parks most places. Though I usually avoid camping in them and prefer backpacking. Ain't nothing never perfect!

    Love your vids Shug, and my 6 & 3 year old daughters love em too! Question if you can answer - I notice one side of your backyard suspension is attached to your fence post? How sturdy is it? I just installed two 8ft 4x4s in about 2.5 feet of concrete in my backyard. I have a pergola style board running in between them to act as a brace to keep them from caving in or shifting. Do you ever worry about your fence coming down on you? I’m not so worried about just plain hanging but I worry about my girls swinging in the hammock. Honestly they seem solid but I am a worry wart....

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are sunk 4 feet in the ground per Minnesota code. Been hanging on it since 2007. The fence is over-built and all the rest of the fencing adds strength. Hickery and I built it.
      Proceed with caution!

      Only once did I have some freeze a bit. I just ran my closed hand up and down the constrictor and the friction loosened it right up.

      shugemery yeah.. the best thing about it, I think, it allows me to really squeeze in a tight spot between trees. I got the rings fixed to the tree strap and put the ridge line though it.. with the rings close to the tree I can squeeze in at close to tarp width. Also, triangle rings bite better in rope.. ah so much fun tweeking!

    hope this isn't a stupid question, but, could you accomplish the same spreading of load that you get from a strap by using multiple windings of a rope? such that there is no greater stress to the tree than a strap would give?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Straps are best on the trees. An image thing we need to project. Some use amsteel or the likes and place small sticks under the rope.

    • @irvingdog01
      @irvingdog01 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've taken to the "belt and suspenders" approach to protecting Minnesota State Park trees by using 1" webbing AND sticks. Because I have a ridgeline, I can cinch down tight on my webbing, so I set it up loose and then insert a few beefy sticks between webbing and bark, then I hammer down on the webbing.
