- Hello friends! Today we will review a "Minced Pie of Beef" from 1796. Ron has never tried anything like it before. Will he approve of the dish? We spent all weekend at Fort de Chartres camped out in a urine soaked tent and now have some stories and items to share with you all. Grab a chair and dinner. Let's get into it!
To see this meal and others being prepared please visit our MAIN channel Early American, thank you!

Love the chicken in the window 😂😂😂❤
How much is that chicken in the window?
@@FloweryThoughts How much is that Chicken in the window,
With the Basketball nose on its face,
You know what a Basketball nose is,
It dribbles all over the place! 🤣
That chicken is Justine's sensei, she trained Justine in the culinary arts, and how to weaponize wooden spoons.
😂😂
So funny! She was like " My invitation must have gotten lost in the mail. Well, here I am!"
The cauldron is a phenomenal find . Congratulations . Enjoy it.
A neighbor of mine who was born in 1920 used to make and can her own mincemeat using venison. One day we were visiting her and she served the both of us a slice (I was 18 and he was 22). We were both too polite to say no and were very surprised that it was fantastic. The consistency was a bit like a pecan pie. Its the only time I ever ate it and never asked her what else she put in it, but kind of wish I would've. She passed away more than two decades ago. Rural life in Southern Oregon was special back in the early 70s. Love your channels. You two are so grounded and full of fun and facts. Blessings
When I was little, my great aunt Marie would make mincemeat pies with my grandmother for the holidays. I loved it, to me it tasted like a very flavorful apple pie. They had no actual meat in them. Apples, raisins, lemon and orange zest a dash of dark rum and so many wonderful spices! My stomach is growling thinking about it!
Your hen that made a special appearance, the one with the fluffy cheeks and scalloped feathers, is an Easter egger. She’s the one laying the beautiful bluish eggs. ❤
Current day minced meat pie is actually raisins, apples, figs, lemon peels and spices in it. The filler is actually cooked before it it used in a pie.
The chickens would love that pie. So its not a total loss.
Hi guys, kinda new to this commenting stuff, I am a neighbor over here in Lesterville, love your channel. And I truly understand your love for living in the woods, I myself live 5 miles down a dirt road on 20 acres in the middle of the woods and survive with just electric but still doing a lot of things the old fashion way. You both are inspirations to all. ❤
This pie makes me think of Rachel’s trifle from Friends😂
LOL! And Ron is Joey. "Raisins? Good. Apples? Good! Prechewed meat? Goooooood!"
Chicken in the window, that was classic . Love it
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE mincemeat pie made the French Canadian/Metis way. In my family we call it Réveillon pie. It's made with minced wild game, usually venison or lamb or beef (for the city folk), rum, cider, molasses sugar, candied peel, and candied ginger plus apples, currents, raisins and all the usual spices.
Wow, grew up Canadian mom love tourtiere and croutons, but never had that one.
Sad to say I'm working in Cali this week so I'll miss the livestream. Hope everyone is doing well. Catch you next week!
Mincemeat pie is very popular in South Central Pennsylvania. I love it served hot with vanilla bean ice cream.
You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for the mentioning of The Woodland Escape. Would love to collaborate with you on a joint endeavour.
One year dad got a huge deer. Mom canned the meat and for several Christmas' we had the most delicious mince meat pie you can imagine. She also made great sausages from the venison.
I was born and raised in New England. Mincemeat pie was traditionally served every Thanksgiving and Christmas. My Auntie Adeline’s mincemeat pie was the best! She substituted walnut meats for beef and it was so delicious. Best holiday treat memories ever!
The cauldron on the bottom has what they call a gatemark, the remaining "scar" from the mold
Great chew and chat. Your cabin looks so cozy.
So cute the hens were in the window, posibly looking for her eggs.
The mincemeat pie looks interesting. I've never taste it.
Nice to see the historical shoes.
Historical facts:
Benjamín Franklin 's library.
I though the quote "No game, no pain was from a movie, but it was from Benjamín Franklin.
It should be included on the Citizenship exam.
Thank you, Ron and Justine.
Gotta love Missouri 😂 It has made for beautiful foliage this year. I'm used to seeing orangey brown leaves on my oaks but this season has brought a lot of red and yellow.
Looking forward to seeing you both My favourite day of the week 🙏🙏🙏❤
Missed the premiere, again. Have a good holiday weekend to everyone in the US. I salute all the veterans watching.
Oh, I'm so excited to see Ron's video on his receipt he's making for Justine. It should be a hoot!
So happy y'all have been so richly blessed.
Glad for y'all to have my share of the mincemeat pie
I'm a Virginian and growing up we traditionally had mincemeat pie for Thanksgiving and Christmas and sometimes it had beef and sometimes not. However, the ones that had beef you could not separate the beef taste out from the rest of the overall flavor and it always had a very sugary thick dark brown syrupy binder.
We grew up eating "mincemeat pie" (in the Great Lakes area) but it was actually a spiced raisin-apple pie, no meat. Really good though. As always a very fun video. Thank you.
My grandma, from southeastern Missouri, used to make the same type of "mincemeat pie" for us when I was a child.
Same here. Grew up in Cleveland. We loved mincemeat pie with some whip cream or ice cream. Delicious 🤤
I think that’s called a mince pie.
I like the gourd full of lumps n bumps! It probably tastes good inside!
My grandma made mincemeat pie during Thanksgiving. It is an acquired taste. I like them now.
Cannot wait to watch. Loved your Halloween cooking video and the chew and chat. I look forward to both every week. ❤ love you both always. May God bless you and yours, always.
Hi Ron and justine
Congratulations on your recent purchases! All are fabulous! In and Out Burger and Chic Fil A are always packed with lines of cars!!!!!
I love mincemeat pie! I Look forward to the holidays to eat mincemeat pie. Yum!! But the modern kind! Not the kind you made 😂
Oh goodie, I personally LOVE meat pies! Almost as much as I live fruit pies! Hopefully camping out in a urine-soaked tent was more enjoyable for you both than it sounds! Can't wait to catch the premiere in a few hours! Cheers, all! 😃
Well this has both meat and fruit so you're in luck. Two for the price of one!
@@EarlyAmerican Really?! Both?! Oh man, am I excited to see this! Thanks, Justine! 😃
You also need to set up a wedding registry so we can spoil you guys
This is an original version of mince pie. Modern ones are all fruit with some suet (both animal and vegetarian options of suet are used), spices, sugar, etc, but the original ones were actually meat, as seen here, mixed with fruit. It's definitely......different for a modern palate.
Love your little visitor's ❣️💯🐓🐔
This is one of the few things you have made that I have no desire to try, especially after Ron basically says “This is not good but I am going to eat it anyway” 😂
My mother-in-law made mincemeat in large quantities, then sent it to family members through the mail. I cannot remember how it was packaged, but it arrived in good shape. I made two pies, they were absolutely delicious! The recipe was much more complex than the one you used, and had lots of ingredients. The bottom line is this: with a good recipe, developed somewhat later, perhaps, than your 1796 recipe, mincemeat pie can be sensational!
I just read that we DID break the record. I am so ready for real fall temps in Missouri.
So funny. On Saturday, we celebrated the St. martin‘s day here in Germany. Traditionally, we roast a goose (like a turkey on Thanksgiving), and the stuffing is traditionally made with apples, raisins, onion and chopped up white bread. We eat it with cooked red cabbage (with lots of Christmas-y spices like nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger and a dash of apple cider vinegar). We love it 😂 it‘s a bit like this dish, just with goose instead of minced beef.
Lol, I like how Ron explained the taste lol
I made a slightly different version of your cold cream. I have to say it’s one of The best things I have done for my skin. My skin is healthier and less greasy. My skin seems to heal faster too. Thank you for history and entertainment 👏👏👏
Haha your chickens want their eggs back. Just kidding. I think they’re adorable to hang out on the window like that. I love the chat portion of these videos! Great job guys
Can't wait for Ron Ron to make his dish. Great video as always ❤❤❤
I live in the province of Quebec, Canada and my grandmother makes mincemeat! It is an unusual recipe to make for a French-speaking family, but it was passed down from my great-grandmother, who worked as a cook in a inn run by people from British descent in her youth. It definitely is an acquired taste, since most people who don't share our last name find it weird 😂 I’m so glad you talked about this dish!
Steven's a great guy, I bought my buckle shoes from him.
Great cauldron! My in-laws lived in Pocasset, it's pronounced POE-KASS-IT. ❤
I need Ron to take me shopping sometime! 😂 I am extremely envious of your cauldron Justine! 😊😅
The ancient forerunner of our UK modern " mince pies" which we traditionally eat at christmas. Ingredients quite similar...extract the meat... keep the apple, spices, suet...increase the fruit...add a dash of brandy. Available in supermarkets from now in boxes of 6 individual ( sweet) mince pies. Xxx very brave of you to try this unusual piexx
I'm glad we're not the only ones experiencing weather anomalies. It's been in the 80s here in Kentucky as well. Thanks for all you do. Love your channel.❤
My grandmother told me that mincemeat disguised beef that was a bit 'off'. We thoroughly enjoy mincement pie at Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Blessings to you both.
My mom's pie had a lot less beef
🤣😂 Ron is so funny. I knew he would get more even though he didn’t like it. 🤣😂 Justine, your reaction cracked me up. 😂😂😂
Looking forward to seeing the pie !! Justine has so many unique and fascinating recipes. 😊😊
We still add raisins (or other fruit like mango) to curries today. So perhaps the tradition continues.
Another great show! Love seeing the chickies in the window. ❤
My grandmother made mince pie now and then, usually for Christmas, it didn't have meat in it though. Only my dad and I liked it. I had six siblings so it just meant more for me and dad!
I LOVE your channels! You found some great stuff at the reenactment. Can't wait to see what the first thing you're going to make in the cauldron. Ron, see you Friday!!
I love mincemeat pie ,my mom was a fantastic cooks. I still make them. GOD BLESS
We use mincemeat from a jar or from a box that is somewhat dry. It’s not really meaty. Yes, they use (beef) suet instead of meat. My grandma always made a mincemeat pie for Thanksgiving. I used to make a pie for my father in law when he was alive. I’ll probably make one for my Dad this year. My grandma also made some delicious cookies from the dry box of mincemeat.
When I was younger my mom made us this. I loved it. I didn’t know what was in it, but I loved it.
Woot woot love your finds what a blessing and price was a good sticker shock! Lol love the chicken visit! Our grand kids live in Mo were in Mi, it’s currently 38 right now wood cookstove is fired up and it was snowing earlier. Have a great week!
I love what they've done with Fort de Chartres! Sadly, right after its first renovation it was flooded, I think in the 1993 floods. But I went back a few years later & they did an amazing job cleaning up everything again. I'm so glad they are adding more features, activities & keeping it a living history. Love your channels -- invaluable information to learn ways we might want to take advantage of again!
I never had a mincemeat pie, meat or meatless. Being of Italian descent, we make fig cookies every year for the Holy days. They are delicious. Great finds at the market! Benjamin Franklin was an amazing individual. Bifocals, Franklin stove and a rocking chair were some of his other creations. He also created the first volunteer fire department as well as the first lending library.
In history, mincemeat pie was often fixed with ingredients that were easy to find in your area. It wasn't necessarily meant to be a delicious meal, rather a more all-in-one, hearty type meal that fed the entire family. Despite the prep and cook time, it was also often thought of as an "easy to make" type meal.
My mother made mince meat pies every thanksgiving! I live in Alabama.
I have a receipt I found in an old book that is very similar to yours, except instead of beef it calls for salt pork. That variation is very tasty. Naturally you have to boil your salt pork first to get rid of the salt. I don't recall it having suet though.
Here in France I've also tried to get real suet direct from the butcher's but most get the carcasses of meat from a centralised slaughter house & the kidney fat is removed. It's frustrating as suet is in fact very good for you (on a keto/paleo diet). Looking forward to seeing Ron's effort on Friday. God bless you both xxxx
I would love to see you make candles with your new molds.
Yall are sooooo adorable and have ALL of my respect. I could NEVER live how yall do. Thank yall soooo much for these vids.
I'm a direct Mayflower descendant, 9th great granddaughter of Samuel Fuller. I love that you mentioned the Pilgrims! I'm also a cousin of Benjamin Franklin, he's my first cousin 8x removed and I knew he'd opened he first library but I had no idea they'd torn it down. Makes me sad. He was a fascinating man. Love your channel and I too have made mincemeat but not this kind. I'm glad you guys tried it though. Never know till you try!
Mincemeat can also refer to nut meat as well. There are a lot of cultures that combine fruit, such as raisins, with minced meat in a pastry. Empinadas are a perfect example and they are delicious. I think it's all about the spices that you add. I was worried when you added sugar. I would prefer a more savory minced meat pie. That being said, I do like sweet mincemeat pies, when actual meat is not in it...like more sweet nut and fruit mincemeat. That being said, I love that you keep trying original receipts that are out there. Very cool!
If you cook everything together before baking it changes the taste and texture. Sometimes we added orange. Easter eggs.
Another fun chew&chat😊
Really glad u found the cauldron, very cool!
Don't know if I'd like the pie, but I love a good pie crust and yours looks amazing.
Looking forward to Ron's surprise receipt Friday.
Love yall❤❤
Great C & C, Justine and Ron! Fun for all and that cauldron is all that and a bag of chips. Have a blessed week! xoxo
That probably would've been made better with a good bit of onions caramelized in the suet with a little shopped garlic, tasty even with the apples and raisins!
This is awesome! I love your content! My grandmother made minced meat pie. I don't remember it having meat in it and I wouldn't have known about the suet as a child eating it. I only remember preferring pecan pie. The story of your trip was great and the description of all your wares. I have enjoyed watching the progress of your home as well and am so thankful you pray for the food and for us. God bless you!
I was not a big fan of mincemeat either but with a drizzle of rum sauce I wouldn’t mind it at all 😊. I never miss an episode of your entertaining and educational show. Thank you.
I love the way you guys cook ♥️♥️
I love mince meat pies without the meat. My mom loved mince meat and raisin pies. We would always have them for Christmas. Lol never tried them with actual meat. Looks interesting.
Looking forward to it. Much love ❤
I LOVE WATCHING YOU GUYS SOOOOO MUCH!!!!! FROM YOUR #1 FAN😊 SHARON ❤
My Mom used to make mincemeat pie! Her and Dad loved it. She used beef, I believe. I tried it when I was young and couldn’t get passed the meat being in a pie with raisins and other sweets. I wish Mom was here to make it again so I could have another try at it! I bet I would love it!
Mincemeat pie is absolutely delicious. Christmas personified.
Greetings from Montana 👋😊 sounds like you are in for a great time meeting up with your friend! Really enjoyed tonight’s chew and chat and really looking forward to Friday!! Have a great evening and God Bless 🇺🇸😊🇺🇸😊🇺🇸😊❤
Ron’s description of the pie made me laugh I love you both you make my day keep them videos coming 😊😊🤗🤗
you're awesome, thank you for what you do.
One of my favorite pies! I add a little clove spice and a tablespoon of apple cidar vinegar. Approximately one cup of sugar. Also candied orange and lemon peel and a little orange juice. Raisens, chopped apples, beef suet and cinnamon and ginger. Add finely chopped beef roast and cook all together for an hour on top of the stove on low heat, stirring frequently. Salt to taste. Let cool. Place in a glass jar and refriderate for a couple days. Put in unbaked pie shell with lattice top and bake 380° for approximately 45 minutes to one hour depending on oven. Yummy!
I'm so glad I found your channel. I just love you two and how down to earth you are. Justine, you are an amazing cook. Can't wait til Friday. Much love.
Thank you so much!
Awesome finds at the Fort, I can’t wait to see what you use it to make. Always a good time at your chew and chats, be blessed.
we belonged to muzzle loaders in michigan and had always loved gathering together with our friends around the fire for reenactments and competition... many great memories
Have you ever seen Danica Design’s hand dipped candles? They’re perfect.
I love that cauldron! How amazing!
If you haven’t already you need to read the book “Ben Franklin’s Almanac Being a True Account of the Good Gentleman’s Life”. Such a great book!! I found it at our local library, and loved it so much I bought it. It’s written Almanac style which he loves and tells you SO much information. Even my girls that I homeschool love listening to me read it out loud. GO GET THE BOOK!! 33:11
Love! the meatless modern mincemeat. With vanilla ice cream. Oolala
Commenting to help the algorithm ❤
I've never liked history
..... until now. You guys really make it interesting.
Great score!!! Love the cauldron
These always remind me of Victorian Christmas even though they're a much older recipe.
The Iron Works! Collectors of Early Iron! Facebook group I belong to can tell you a lot about your cast iron. Love your cauldron and both your shows.
Thanks for the info!
My grandmother would use candied fruit in her minced meat pie along with the chuck cut of beef and brandy.
Hi y'all! I am old and have never tried a mincedmeat pie. When I was little I did not know what a mince was, (I thought that it was a creature or some kind of gross food ) Mince and mouse sounded to simular to me. I thought that it sounded gross when I heard family talking about it. This is Mrs. Ace X, from Florida.
The cauldron!! Wow. Beautiful.
We had a warm snap here in Pennsylvania not long ago and had just gotten used to the cooler temps. Funny how 80 feels cool in summer when it’s high 90’s/100’s but then makes you sweat once it’s cooled down.😅
