I will tell you one thing: Paul Hollywood would be impressed with the wiggle on that custard which was baked inside a pumpkin IN THE COALS OF A FIRE. 🥇🏆🎉
Thank you Ron and Justine. Loved seeing the various receipts and methods. My recipe is from the 1880s Scotland. My great-grandma passed it down to my grandma in Canada and then to my dad. I've never seen anybody make it the way we do. The eggs are separated. The yolks go in with the wet ingredients. The dry ingredients go into the wet ingredients. The egg whites are beaten until stiff peaks form and then gently folded into the wet mixture. It makes for a light fluffy pie rather than a dense one.
I currently grow Seminole and Cherokee Tan pumpkins - Small and tasty, and they store well. I like to fill them with a custard mixture with raisins and apples. Glad you are giving the chickens the pumpkin seeds - they will usually eat any part of the pumpkin that you give them, but the seeds are a natural de-wormer!
So much fun watching tonight. My cousin makes a venison stew inside of a whole pumpkin, best thing I’ve ever eaten. I’m not a pumpkin pie eater at all.
My husband makes pumpkin custard pies on Thanksgiving an Christmas. It is my mother in law recipes. She use to make the pies every yr when she was alive along with rum balls an fudge which were really good...
May you all and your family members have a lovely feast this year... it's been a hard one for all of us. No matter what is on the table let's be truly Thankful. God bless us everyone!☺️🦃🥧🥧
Have a Blessed Thanksgiving over there at Frontier Patriot: Ron, Justine, Arthur, Ron's dad, Kandye and her hubby too. (And all the family that we haven't seen on screen too: Happy Thanksgiving!!!!)
Wishing you both a happy and blessed Thanksgiving. Thank you for all the entertainment and knowledge you share with us, we appreciate your hard work and authenticity.
My sister in law is going to be making A pie from 1600s too for Thanksgiving! I hope it is similar to the one Justine is making!!!! See ya later tonight!2❤❤❤🦃
I have never seen pumpkin puree in the store that was mostly carrot and sweet potato? Love pumpkin pie and to see how such a timeless recipe has evolved. I'm so ready for fall to come again!
I'll have to share this with my sister-in-law. She always makes pumpkin soup for the family in little pumpkins like this! How neat! By the way, as a history teacher and someone who loves cooking, I so enjoy y'all's channel. Keep up the amazing work!!!
In Plymouth Massachusetts today the recreated pilgrim village had a period reinactor bake a pompion pie the old way when we visited there a few years ago. Many New England recipes have been passed down through families for generations.
My personal favorite pumpkin pie recipe comes from "The King's Bread, 2nd Rising - Cooking at (Ft.) Niagara 17-26-1815. As to the 1620 version, this was a technique used by the Native Americans, and many NE Cultures would scoop out the cooked pumpkin and add maple sugar, some kind of animal fat, and even broiled deer or other meat. Thanks for all you do and Happy Thanksgiving!
I truly enjoyed this Thanksgiving episode. It was informative, interesting and I really love viewing the comparison of the pumpkin pie through history from yesteryear to present. I wish you both a blessed and happy Thanksgiving. Tomorrow , I will include you amongst my many blessings. With gratitude for creating this channel. 🍁🥧🥧🥧🍁
The comparisons were very interesting! Ron looked so handsome in his red vest and cravat, and Justine beautiful in her dress and white shawl. The second pumpkin pie was amazing, thou I love that Ron had eyeball daring when he made his pie. It doesn't seem farfetched that the pilgrims could have roasted a pumpkin in the ashes until tender, then mashed and added the other ingredients and poured it in a pumpkin bowl. But, I can see where just pouring the custard in the pumpkin, and letting the inside cook intact to eat with the filling would be more convenient. Very nice job on all the pies and I too thought that Townsend was going to be your guest. It was fun seeing Arthur in a friendlier light and I do hope he lowered your rent. Love everything you do as it is always done so well. Happy Thanksgiving Blessings!
Im wondering if the custard one would've been more palatable if it was served chilled. I've discovered not only is it far easier to cut the pumpkin in half, take out seeds & roast, but it gives it an added carmelized flavor & dries the pumpkin a bit more. But that second pie looked acceptional. Im so impressed with how well they all turned out baking the old way.
I absolutely enjoy how you describe the recipes and history behind them. Justine you are a great teacher I thank you and Ron for your channel. Sweetest couple ever ❤❤❤
This video was fabulous! I laughed so hard at some of the silliness! ... Those pies were awesome! Love the history that you share on everything you put out. Thanks for sharing. Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful....God Bless y'all!
Oh man I had been late coming onto the live but rewatched the video now and it was great. I can't believe I was right. I had guessed the landlord in the other video as your special guest. That was fun and the pies looked real good, especially Justine's. I liked the crust on top. The earliest one in the pumpkin was so interesting. Ron good job on yours too. Congrats to Arthur for guessing them all correctly and to you guys for getting a cheaper rent 🤗😂 Happy Thanksgiving all and very thankful for your fun positive videos. 🦃🍁🥧🍂 They keep me smiling.
It's October, you're carving pumpkins, and I'm still playing soft Christmas music alongside this video. It's not even period appropriate. It just sooths my soul. Lol
Happy Thanksgiving 😊 Very nice and yes I get to learn what I didn't know about our history thank you so much. Happy Thanksgiving 😊 From me to you best wishes ✨️ 💛 💕 ❤️ 🙏
Carolyn's pumpkin pie 1graham cracker pie crust 1 can Libby's pumpkin puree 1 can sweetened condensed milk 2 Tblsp pumpkin pie spice 1 pinch of salt 1 tsp of vanilla Preheat oven 350 degrees. Pour mix into pie crust. Place on baking sheet. Bake for 30-45 minutes or until center is not giggley or wet. Cool completely before serving.
I just got around to watching this awesome video! I have to say, the two of you teach me so much and you also make me laugh! 10 minutes into this video when your hair grew quite a bit Justine! :) Your wreath is beautiful and also looked wonderful upon your head. I absolutely, love you guys and watch you as much as I can with the two toddlers I have running around. Lol I tell everyone I know about both your channels! Love you!! Stay true!!
My ex-husbands ancestor was the captain of the Mayflower when it returned in record time to save the colonists and on arriving to the starving colonists with food provisions there was debate as to whether they would fast in gratitude. He argued successfully that instead they should feast in gratitude and have a “Thanksgiving” and invite those their neighbors. That story always moved me. That they chose to celebrate being saved from famine rather than chose to further prostrate themselves. A story of hope and gratitude, rather than fear and prostration.
Not having read all comments....but watching the whole video does make me think the last pie with pumpkin shell might have been better if the pumpkin was hollowed out and mixed with the custard?
Toooo cute. Justine :. " Ron, do we need a Gag Order for you ...??!!" 😄😁 A delightful episode, thank you Miss Justine, Ron and Arthur . That lattice topped pie looked delicious, Miss Justine! Just as a side note.. there are versions of Pumpkin Pie that is a combination of the Pumpkin, along with certain type of squash, which gives a depth of flavour . :)
I love pumpkin pie. Probably my favorite pie. My favorite dessert is custard. The first one sounds good except I don't like clove or ginger. It sounds like it would be good as a pumpkin cream brulee.
Justine, as an amateur historian who visited Plymouth and the Mayflower replica a week ago, I'm totally impressed by your detective instincts and reasonable conclusions about the Pilgrims' pumpkin pie! Love it--great job!! :-)

That's 400+ years of pumpkin pie! What a delicious time! 😋
Yes it was!
I love this! You guys should present at schools! Great stuff.
That is a great idea!
Unfortunately, schools would just make it about hate and victimhood

@@missybrenner478 Me too! 🤗
We call that pumpkin chiffon pie.
The look on Justine’s face when Arthur enjoyed the second pie is priceless. Such wholesome enjoyable content. Love it. Happy Thanksgiving!🍁🦃🍽
yall hilarious! Arthur is quite the handsome man and gratitude to transporting us back in time!
This was so much fun to watch. Arthur has a voice that would do well on television or radio.
Love you guys, Happy Thanksgiving from Massachusetts.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Ron: Explaining the date set for Thanksgiving. Justine: Got pie on her fork and just wants to eat it but waiting patiently for Ron to finish. 🤣

I really like Ron’s idea of filling the pumpkin with a regular pie filling. Still gluten free and face it, very impressive. 🎃

Happy Thanksgiving! This is actually a compliment, Ron fits in his clothes - if I ate as much as him? It wouldn't work out so well.

Very interesting article
Make sure all of you viewers eat before watching this video, so you won't have to jump up and run out for a pie at the supermarket.
