Honestly, there was so much padding in Liu Shan's carriage that he probably didn't get hurt from being thrown. Also, like he said. Kinship before family. I know Liu Shan was his child, but in the grand scheme, Zhao Yun was 100x more important. He's not only one of Liu Bei's most powerful warriors, but he's also been loyal to Liu Bei for years now. It may sound wrong by today's standards, but Liu Bei probably cares more about Zhao Yun than his son by quite a margin.

Actually quite a few scholars argue that Liu Shan never became mentally disabled nor was he remotely unintelligent. He had one of the longest reigns of a ruler in this time period, and unlike Wei and Wu, it was relatively free from court intrigue and conspiracies. Liu Shan gets a lot of blame for holding back Jiang Wei's campaigns and for saying he didn't even miss Shu years later in Jin court, but all of this points to what I believe a pacifistic person. Jiang gets his fair share of criticism for draining Shu's resources in unending campaigns (which attests to his persevering and loyal character both heroic tragically flawed). If Liu Shan recognized this, it would be consistent with his character to try to reel back these campaigns. Surrendering Shu... his comments in the Jin court, all of this attests to someone who probably believed that peace was more valuable than ambition. This is my analysis of his character and that of some scholars. It seems cowardly and incompetent to us, but different people value different things. If even say, Liu Bei truly was a man of the people, perhaps Liu Shan's own personal interpretation of valuing people's welfare is that there is no point in sacrificing more lives for the sake of glory or an age already lost. Finally, his long reign and comments in the Jin court probably also speaks to someone who understands how to maintain human relations and compromise to stabilize them. For this reason, I believe Liu Shan was actually quite intelligent; he only valued peace more than ambition or glory. It's highly unlikely someone mentally disabled could have held a domestically stable reign of Shu for that long. The Jin dynasty itself was fractured because of the reign of someone truly mentally disabled, and contrast that with Liu Shan, and you'll see how it's really like to have a mentally retarded ruler.
@Alan Kao Sima's Jin Dynasty was far worse. China's population was reduced to 16 million. At one point there was famine in capital Chang'an and the third emperor Huai of Jin was forced by Xiongnu warlord Liu Yao to walk in the street carrying the imperial seal with his mouth using a string. Humiliation! Makes Liu Chan's reign look like the golden age of Shu smh

Would adou be any different and actually fight for Shu at the very end when Jin invaded if liu bei never threw him on the ground? I think Shu would have a fighting chance against Jin if he was an able leader.
I see your point but the actual act of throwing his infant was unnecessary, he could have at least thrown him into the general direction of one of his knaves rather than the ground. That isn't virtuous and it certainly isn't characteristic of Liu Bei's character. That was such a fit of passion.
