Zhuge liang to Lui Bei: "You need to first secure jing, then the river lands, and then you can achieve your dream of upholding the Han. It will take these 3 steps to ensure your victory." Sima Yi to Cao Cao: "You can't win right now, the odds are against you. Wait 10 years for your enemies to grow soft, build up your own nation's prosperity, and then you can deal a decisive blow to your enemies." If this were an anime reminiscent of L vs Light (Death note) then those two scenes will take place side by side, ending with both Cao Cao and Liu Bei declaring victory.
Sima Yi's "loyalty", isn't the same as Guan Yu/Kong Ming, who dedicate brilliance and valor completely onto their lord. Sima is a complicated being, when the Three Kingdom peroid begun, there was a fourth kingdom, and that was the sole Sima Yi. He had to potential to start an era from scratch. That's why he always reminded himself it isn't Wei he's fighting for, it's for his descendents. Btw Cao Cao knew even if he treated Sima Yi like Kong Ming, he'd rebel against him when his kingdom weakens.

Sima yi was loyal to the cao's because of how he was friend to cao pi and to cao rui(3rd wei emp). He only wanted to retire after his war with Zhuge Liang, but cao shuang wanted to kill all his clan just because of his deeds. So basically at the end Sima yi was forced to act first rather than to let his entire clan exterminated. He only killed the regent cao shuang only, not the whole cao clan. It was actually Sima yi's grandson usurped the throne after they defeated shu. so to think that Sima yi really intended this in the end game to me is WRONG since he was nearing 70 when he finished. Like cao cao was. and that probably where the "he planned this all along" in his character got very MISUNDERSTOOD.

If he was born in Rome, he'd have been declared Emperor by the men ten times over.

Kongming is like a god on this era, a man ahead of his time. I can say that all men are below him. Sima Yi is good because he beat kongming and heavens are on his side.
