He wasn't the fastest of drummers, but his solos always had a constant narrative, almost like storytelling.
Correct Ginger said it’s not how fast you play it’s what you say
having seen cream live, and knowing the troubled times Peter went through after the cream years, this warms my heart to see him happy and in his chosen genre, jazz.
The dangling cigarette is a total flex.
It's something he copied from his drum teacher & hero Phil Seamen, who was Britain's greatest ever jazz drummer.
From Phil Seamen
Man I've never been able to play while smoking, let alone soloing. I just wanted to see how far he could go with that cig and I'm amazed at how far he did!
More seriously, very interessting stuff here because we can see clearly the very stuff he used to play with Cream.
Cheers!
Wow! Even with the pyrotechnics he is still understated. He can slip in a measure of absolutely amazing virtuosity as though it were fill. Miss it? Listen again!
still love his work!!
Me too. Never could I get enough of Ginger
Great as always but deffo rocking the Albert Steptoe look on here.
Yes, he bore a striking resemblance to him.
Lol I thought that too! "Harold!"
Thanks for this upload !! I didn't know he used double bass !! 👍👍😍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
First one to do it.
@stevefisher8323 Really ?? Wow. I loved cream ,I think Cream was the coolest rock band ever in a way ! And he was,the drum was the leading instrument. The most important player in the band was him ! Very unique ,great vibes ,groovy band he made Cream to be !! Thanks for your reply ! My brother in law used to know his son, btw. I loved their " Colourful cream" album ,can't count how many times I've played it in my life !! 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
@@spark_6710 The long version of Toad (I think on their live album) IMO still stands as the greatest of all time.
@stevefisher8323 Hey. I just googled who was the 1st drummer played double base drums ,it was Loui Bellson !! I've totally forgotten about that !! Because I never cared for it ! To me ,hi hat is the most important thing when it comes to drums !! The greatest invention of musical instruments !!
I used to stay up to catch Louie Bellson on a late night talk show in the 90's !! He was like a magician !!
Buddy Rich said ,hi hats were the most important, too !! He stopped playing double base after realizing it .
Thank you so much for your replies !! I enjoy hearing from drum fans/ drummers ! 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
@@spark_6710 I rock drumming Baker I believe was the first
magnifico.😭
Ginger Baker was the beating heart of Cream, they would not have been the same without him. The greatest drummer ever.
Indeed.
Ginger Baker was Cream. Eric Clapton is overrated.
Goddamn, this is one of the best solos I’ve ever seen from him
Please take a look at Mr.El Estepario Siberiano's drum solo. It's so amazing.
Ginger swings wonderfully, and the some...
Ginger Baker was by far the most unique drummer ever, simply the best.
No, absolutely not. Baker was very musical, played fine with his band - but he shouldn't play solos. He is pretty bad it actually. This is not a good solo. But yeah, it is hard to "come up with" an inspired, grrovy, cool solo. Baker had more or less only this one solo. The "bibbity-babbity solo"
Der beste Schlagzeuger aller Zeiten. Ruhe in Frieden.😍😍😍👆👆👆 Viele Grüße aus Warthausen bei Biberach an der Riß
He might not have had the technical skills of Buddy Rich but Ginger was amazing and exciting to see and hear. He influenced drummers the way Hendrix influenced guitar players.
Rich played drum solos Ginger played musical compositions on the drums
@@mickpearson6184 Couldn't have said it better!
To me ginger style is much more better than buddy rich , and is easy for a professionist imitate buddy but is more difficult enter in the sound of ginger !
@@UgoFallavena meh. They both are the best at what they did. Technically, Buddy Rich is and will be the top.
@@jamess4535 buddy rich could not play the double bass drum , a difficult technique and ginger was a master in this kind of indipendence with the pedals. Ginger was more complete and more creative than buddy a musician with a dated sound . I am a drummer so i know what i say. My vote is for Ginger .
Mr. Baker was the best of them all. RIP!

Subjective
No he wasn’t
Good 'ol Ludwigs. Wish I could play bass like that.
One thing he did and was his "hallmark" of playing..., He took the drums seriously.
Could listen to Tracy hit that note at the end of the tune a zillion times!!
I'm more curious as to how they got those toms to sound so bad lol. The kicks sound excellent. Great performance none the less.
I was equally surprised to see a legend playing something so crappy sounding at a show.
@@strumminfuel4625 I think the sound guy sucked that night. Everything is off lol.
Those toms need some tuning. Surprised Ginger was happy playing on an unprepared kit!
Those heads sound shot!
@@tonyvincent9753 If dead whales could speak....LOL!
done a long time ago by deep purple but hey still awesome respect Ginger
A M A Z I N G drummer , absolutely not over rated because a real genius influent and with a unique style . A master of the double bass , and i cant tell the same of buddy rich , for example , that is , really, the most over rated drummer in history, maybe good in his time but now surpassed . Ginger is above him by far !
Clearly the best ever cream of the crop
Bill Frisell great guitarist
Poahjowal, Ginger Baker is GOAT.🇱🇺🇱🇺💪🏿💪🏿
Organic trap drumming Master!
blows this out of the water!!!
I always liked Ole Ginger. Other favs, Moon, Bohnam, Pert, Chester Thompson, Phil Collins.
Ashes to Ashes Drums to Drums
Ginger Baker est un batteur hors pair
D'une puissance monumentale
Mais il était ingérable
Un caractère exécrable
The knife of the jungle cuts another first path.
I agree that he is over-rated. He's good...steady and somewhat inventive. But, that solo was almost all a single stroke roll with accents. He's a good rock drummer, but not great.
Yeeeah❤
es un fenomeno....👌👌👍👍
hahaha what a legend, wearing a sunrise on the sufferbus shirt.
La durée du solo est liée à celle de la cigarette...
Chicago made Ludwig drums!!!
Gah those rack toms sound HORRIBLE!
I've heard probably everything that Ginger ever recorded and I've seen him live several times. His kit always sounded great - except here. I reckon something went wrong with the rack tom mics or he had previously had a fight with the sound man...
They sound exactly the way they're supposed to. You obviously haven't a clue.
Nope. Not a clue. Your response shows you have less of a clue than me. I'm a professional musician, but you obviously know more than me. Can you teach me how to know when toms sound good? If these are what they're supposed to sound like, well .... hey- why did you get so defensive? Are you Ginger Baker? Can I get your autograph? @@dimension2488
I love the sound of those toms.
Fuckin A
Often quite sloppy but did some great stuff with Cream
Obviously a but of a tw@t of a human at times
Ruined by the worst toms sounds like he got them off a 50 quid starter set
I will be honest- imo- at ANY age he is vastly unremarkable as a drummer. Not fast- dull- repetitive- not interesting in any way.
listen to the mule
Not precise and stoned as fuck 😂
Drums sound terrible...he's playing baby poop.
Not for me
He's basically doing a single stroke roll with slight variations....think of "Wipe Out". I'm just not impressed considering the hype.
I always like pros telling us we’re not actually hearing what we’re hearing - shit.
Who yhd hell was kncharge of sound. The snare dounds fine. The toms are awful. Maybe it's his tuning or rim splattery.
Toms sound terrible.
God them Tom drums sound horrid
In my humble opinion.... a very over rated drummer who developed this persona and character backed up by very basic rudiments... just a sheer force of perseverance and God help anyone in the band opening their mouth... I think he like Charlie Watts just stuck at it and carved out a place in music history with a rusty nail... a lesson in total commitment to what they love.
I'm afraid you're correct my friend, I am just afraid to say it because so many people love him and hate to criticize--but continuous triples between a snare and tom over double BD beats doesn't cut it for me. however the first time I heard Cream in high school and TOAD in particular (which you are hearing in most part here) I was still impressed--and I do love Cream and somehow , what he was doing was right. No, the skills of an "upper-end" technical drummer are not there--still I won't over rate him--but I do love listening. and Cream is classic, so there you go. (my grade 9 students learn the triplets between the snare and the toms --and its fun and a great exercise. )
Ive been saying the exact same thing, and I always get insulted for it (not that i care). He was good. Not great.
@@johnhead6116 regularry your comment is ridicule 😂😂😂
Bull s___ he was considered the greatest drummer by his peers for 50 maybe 60 years. You have a bad ear and eye
Or is it just envy 😅🤣😂
Those toms sound like crap lol
Never done anything for me…..I don’t get it…….?…..I could excuse his arrogance & bad attitude if he was any good……compare this to what Billy Cobham plays & you will get my point………come on , bring it on….
I dont like a ripetitive drummer like cobham ! What created cobham .? And his influence ? Zero . How much drummer consider cobham an influence today . If you got a good master you can repeat his style easily . Cobham hadn t style and was not personal . The most forgotten drummer ever
@@UgoFallavena can’t understand your drivel…??….you’re full of shit obviously…..
@@UgoFallavena Cobham had almost superhuman speed and stamina, but not interesting to listen to.
@@clivewellings7606 his musical production is forgettable.
toms sound bad . Plastic sound I'd expect from a beginners set.
60's setup doesnt work with modern close mic'ing ?
There's plenty of other vids where he is using the same kit with, presumably, the same tuning which sound great. It is just here... I'll blame the sound guy.
Could be that the sound guy had those mic's phase flipped and making them sound thin
The snare sounds good but the rest of those drums sound like shit.
