I saw Phil Ehart from Kansas in a drum clinic in the 80s and hetalked about the Simon Phillips clinic that he attended. He described Simon as being able to play ambidextrously and that anything he played with his hands he could also play with his feet.
I've switched to playing open handed in last 3 years, and came to exactly the same conclusion. I'm used to playing 1/8s or 1/4s on the hi-hat with my left, so makes sense to lead with the left on 1/16s. It just feels more natural.
Thanks so much for this as I've struggled with this for so long. I'm right handed and because of chipping the down beats with the hi hats, when I do constant 16ths I lead with my left foot yet videos by Mike Portnoy etc would tell you to lead with the right. In actual fact, I play my left foot on the tips of my toes like I'm still playing the hi hats lol. I don't think I'm made of playing double bass and kind of moving away from wanting to pursue it, but this video was really helpful.
Years ago I saw Simon, I believe at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt, where he played the triplets on the bassdrums with RLR RLR etc. I found that a great idea because it naturally has the shuffle feel in it!
I discovered it takes 2 separate brains to play 2 bass drums, which made it impossible for me to accomplish! In fact you might call it 'a train wreck'. 😵💫
I always lead with my right the problem is if i start on an e or an and i still stsrt with my right which then throws it over to a left foot lead. I think its a balance thing that i have to start with my right
I thought I played weird, or incorrectly, but I do the exact same thing. Sixteenth notes leading with left, triplets leading with right. Also ambi on the hands. If it's good enough for Simon?????????
For me this dude is one of the greatest of all drummers.
Always has been one of my favorites
Love that guy.
Has been one of my prime inspirations for playing lead drums for 30 yrs now.

Brilliant! And what a sound! One of my all time heroes . So lovely to watch those little details in his mastery.

I just think of my feet and legs as another set of arms and hands playing rhythms on any other drum. Works for me!

If you really put in enough time practicing….you WILL eventually crush it.
It absolutely doesn't.
Literally the first thing I did after learning to play a beat.
That was a few weeks
😎👍💗🇬🇧🥁🔥💣🔊🎼GO SIMON GO!!!
I've been a HUGH fan ever since "Space Boogie!"

I play continue to play Tama drums because of drummers like Simon. I also lead with my left in the double bass. It was just easier.
Love this. I'm ocd about being able to pay patterns with both left and right leads with feet and hands.
Your a genius drummer..sin after sin was ground breaking.. MSG… victim of illusion..
