      What made it particularly difficult to fly in stormy weather like this?

    • @gerardmoran9560
      @gerardmoran9560 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mrdeurknopp Same as pretty much any airplane- turbulence causing attitude deviations, variable and gusty winds causing airspeed deviations, etc. The 73 wasn't particularly difficult at all. Still, it was subject to unstable and gusty conditions. I'm not an aeronautical engineer but it seems like 3 big factors effect an airplane's behavior in unstable conditions- mass, heavy airplanes require a larger force to affect the flight path, control authority, which determines the effectiveness of the pilot's corrective inputs and wing loading. Higher wing loading (pounds per square foot of wing area) seems to minimize the effect of gusts and vertical forces. Light airplanes like a Cessna-150 have wing loadings of 10 lbs/sq.ft, while airliners have over 140 lbs./sq.ft. Cheers

    I have a question, what would happen if the autopilot would land the plane?
    is there a special reason that the pilots manually land the plane?
    if the autopilot is a "computer" so wouldnt he do a better work than human pilots?
    Thanks :)

    • @Hk-uw8my
      @Hk-uw8my ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The autopilot mainly lands the plane in low visibility conditions when manual flying might not be appropriate. It requires a special equipment on both the plane and the runway so it is not available on all runways.Most landings are manual .
      Pilots dont need a special reason to land manually, but rather to land with autopilot.
      they would land manually because they are pilots, people that are employed to fly the plane.
      The fact that the autopilot is a computer doesnt nessesarily mean it is always better, there are advantages but also cons, it is better than humans for landing in fog since it doesn't rely on eyes, but it is more restricted when it comes to the max wind it can handle during landing for example.

      I guess the autopilot would disconnect in this turbulence

    • @Vladdy89
      @Vladdy89 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hk-uw8my In low visibility conditions autopilot performs the approach procedure, not landing. Touchdown is carried out manually in 99.9% of cases, with the exception of situations when they're testing the auto-landing system, which exists on some planes but cannot yet be completely trusted. And if the pilot doesn't see the runway with his own eyes at minimums then there will be no landing and the plane will go around.

    • @Hk-uw8my
      @Hk-uw8my ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Vladdy89 autoland has been used commercialy for 58 years now lol. For example the plane in this video which is a 737ng , is mostly configured to land by itself under certain categories of low visibility operations such as cat II and catIII.
      The autopilot would be disconnected after main gear touchdown as it is not able to track the centerline on the ground for most 737s. But newer planes like the triple 7 or 787 can do it though, alongside the rare 737s that are equipped accordingly( Autopilot connected to the rudder pedals)
      No one is actually asked to fully trust these things, the pilots need to be rated for autolands and are trained to monitor them and ideally guard the controls as they get close to the ground.
