This guy was the best lead male vocalist of the entire Rock and roll Earl. For some reason he never got the recognition he should have!!! But he did have a moniker attached to him He was called simply"The Voice"... Everyone in the music industry what early knew who he was...
Jays given name was David Blatt. Apparently he was born in New York City, I think he was the 1st or 2nd "' Jay Black"' after the other "' Jay Black"' ,Given name Jay Traynor. They were Both Lead Singers with Jay and The Americans.
For everyone who doesn't know this man, he is Jay Black. Jay was the second lead singer for the group JAY AND THE AMERICANS. Jay took over as lead singer after the original singer left the group. Don't quote me on this, but I believe Jay Black took over in 1964. This song hit the charts in 1965. Jay turned out some more hit songs until he left and was replaced by another singer named Jay. So there you have it...three different lead singers for JAY AND THE AMERICANS. The group is still performing to this very day, but it was Jay Black who everyone remembers.
Notice the audience never stops yelling and applauding. Their approval and appreciation so very evident. We have just loss another great 60s/70s artist. 😢 Great song, great performer, great performance.
RIP Jay Black (David Blatt) who passed away last week on the 22nd of October 2021,aged 82,known as "The Voice", ex lead singer of Jay and The Americans from the 60s. In this video, which I think was 10 years ago, that would've made him 72,and still running rings around younger singers.
I've loved Jay Black of Jay and the Americans for YEARS. Sad he died last year at age 82. He was a fantastic entertainer!!! He did sooo many great ones! Come a Little Bit Closer is a GREAT one. He was called The Voice, and you can see why!
Absolutely one of my favorite singer’s. His voice is so phenomenal! I believe he was classically trained! You have to listen to his 25 year old self singing it! It’s with Jay and the Americans band!
Recorded the original version when he was in his mid 20’s....he recorded this when he was in mid 70’s.....Jay Black, of Jay and the Americans....you’ve got to listen to his version of This Magic Moment
Another outstanding song from Jay and the Americans is Walking in the Rain ... Jay Black aka the “Voice” is simply amazing and one of the truly great voices from the rock era.
Thanks for doing that. Jay had a tremendous voice. He's still living, but lost that wonderful voice. He was 74 for this performance. Jay And The Americans had some splendid songs such as 1) This Magic Moment 2) Come A Little Bit Closer 3) Hushabye. Jay is Jewish and speaks Yiddish. In his singing his diction was perfect. In his natural voice he sounds like a New Jersey gangster from the old days. He's a rather funny comedian. Cara Mia from Italian means "My Beloved." He's been in some movies as a tough guy. I think his falsetto might be even better than Frankie Valli's.
That's surprising. He did a concert in Jan. of 2017 and it was very poor. When he did "Pretty Woman" I felt sorry for him. He's not 74 anymore. :-) Maybe he'll do more comedy than singing.
I too saw that concert in 2017, but at that time he admittedly said he "sucked" (his words not mine) but that he had not sung in almost a year and a half due to doctor's orders, and was hoping the voice would come back. I was hoping too...
At your age, you should have heard of Jay Black and the Americans. His real name is David Blatt. I'm betting you never heard of the Jersey Boys either. How sad for you.
I did not recognize his name, but I knew from the song title. He had to be a man who sounded like a man. A requirement for my male singers. I played, Come a little bit bit closer to death when I was a kid in the 60 s Cool to get a flashback. Dd
How could you NOT heard of Jay Black, figuring the age you are, wanna know music...know your classics and hits even sinatra did not have this lengthe and inner value in his breath during his days though ol' bleu eyes breathed through his nose and mouth similar. shame not knowing him and this absolute hit in the day...and still going stong... don't know your classics, your not worth the effort for your opinion. next thing you gonna tell me....elvis ? yeah...heard of him...and who is this orbison clown ?
Absolutely wonderful! No one today has that vocal range!!!!!
And to think the first time he sang that song he was 25 years old.

From a time when they made real music.
At your age, you should have heard of Jay Black and the Americans. His real name is David Blatt. I'm betting you never heard of the Jersey Boys either. How sad for you.
YES ,Your look seems to tell me that you are of the age that you have heard many of the GREAT MUSIC of the 60's !!!
Yes I look like Peter Puck
He looks like Gary Busey here.
You never heard of Jay and the Americans?
I think him and the righteous brothers have better vocals then even James Brown He makes Aretha Franklin and Adele speechless
I did not recognize his name, but I knew from the song title. He had to be a man who sounded like a man.

He's from Brooklyn NY
His real name is David Blatt. He took the name Jay Black when Jay Tray or original lead singer of Jay and the Americans quit
