This was a great band from the 60's-70's. The lead singer had a very powerful voice. Some of their hits were "She Cried", "Come A Little Bit Closer", "Only In America" etc. In 1969, they recorded an album of their favorite oldies called "Sands Of Time", which included the hit "This Magic Moment" (The Drifters). They also had a hit with "Walkin' In The Rain" (The Ronettes).
Jay was one of the greatest singers ever he was trained as a classic singer. He did the magnificent song on a PBS special and sounded the same. Even a gentleman that does that analysis on TH-cam with special equipment stated it sounded the same as the original. Walking in the Rain and This Magic Moment are my favorite by him and the band members who do a great job also.
I love Jay and the Americans. My favorite is This Magic Moment. Stan if you're seen Guardians of the Galaxy 2, then you've heard Jay and the Americans sing Come a Little Bit Closer during the fight scene on Yondu's ship...except they took liberties and beefed up the last chorus with a choir. 😉😉👍👍
Hey Stan if you want to hear some more great voice control, check out The Platters. I mean, what a voice on Tony Williams!! Check out The Great Pretender (One of my all-time favorite songs. Also My Prayer. These guys were crooners way back in the 50s/60s .
The lead singer Jay Black recalled that when he met Frank Sinatra, Sinatra told him, "Are you the 'Cara Mia' guy? You'd better lower your key or you're going to lose your voice." Sadly, Sinatra's prediction was ultimately correct.
Jay Black had such a powerful and beautiful voice. Love all his songs
