I had a TURP done just over 3 years ago for enlarge prostate as I was unable to urinate.
It took me about 6 months for it to settle down to get back to some sort of normal .
After I got the catheter out a week after the surgery I went for a void test to see if I could urinate naturally , I could so that was great.I also got off the Tamsulosin after about 3 to 4 weeks.
After the TURP it was still a challenge to control frequency and urgency for several weeks after that. It's almost a mind over matter thing , your brain is telling you to pee but in reality your bladder is nowhere near needing to be emptied. I had to retrain my brain to be in sync with my bladder by not rushing to pee everytime I got the urge , you just relax and try to hold off and after about 20 seconds the urge dissipated. You continue doing this elongation time each time you get the urge and over about 2 days it's works its way back in sync and improved very slowly over several weeks in my case.
My biggest relief was when my urologist told me the prostate reduction tissue was benign after it was tested just after the TURP.
The downside though was some ED disfunction which has gotten better but I was left with retrograde ejaculation after the TURP which is a downer as you lose the pleasure of that ejaculation feeling .
I did have complications pre procedure as I got sepsis from 2 common e-coli infections in my bloodstream and urine from which I went into septic shock . Thank goodness for the wonderful doctors and nurses who saved my life with their prompt and knowledgeable action without them I would not be here today and doing very well now.

Hi my name is Don I hear what you are saying loud and clear I ordered this owfeel urinal system. It has a bag and tubing, and over your penis and you pee in the tubing into the bag. What I did was took the cloth off held it against me with tighter fitting underwear on and cut a hole in the crotch for the tube to come out instead of getting pinched from inside of your leg. I'm not afraid to leave the house and pissin my pants. Check it out I'm glad I found this. Hope it can be a help to you. I ordered from Amazon

Gentlemen, I just had Aquablation surgery five days ago. I am 47 years old and a bit young to have BPH, but after years on Tamsulosin 0.4 twice a day, my problem continued to worsen. I originally spoke with a urologist who was new to his profession and was going to put me down for the TURP surgery. I decided to get a second opinion. I spoke with another doctor who recommended someone who had done dozens if not hundreds of Aquablation surgeries. I was hospitalized for an overnight, sent home with a catheter, and two days later went back for a void test and had the catheter removed. That was two days ago, and I am doing well. Urine stream is fantastic, but right now there is pain with urination, and there has been since I returned home, but that is expected. I feel like I am healing and recovering very quickly, but maybe that is due to my younger age. I will try to post a follow up in another month or so to let you know how I'm doing. As of right now, I would say anyone with BPH talking to a urologist, see if they do Aquablation, ask how many they have performed. This is not something you want to mess around with, and there is so much less risk with Aquablation versus TURP. I found the site aquablation.com very helpful.

I have the Aquablation tentatively scheduled for Feb. 8th. About 2 years ago, I had the urolift ( 6 bands ). Only had about two months of decent results, but rapidly declined. My urologist discussed aquablation, and the good outcome, even for larger prostates. After another talk with him, and researching for two weeks, I decided to do it. Keep us posted as you can.

@@ronaldowespi I’m not quite sure to be honest. I’m still waiting for that part to stop. It would have to be the trauma of the urethra from the robotic scope or the catheter I would imagine. However some blood clots have come out during the healing process and those can be painful, too.

I had aquablation January 3rd. I agree with you, find a good doctor who does aquablation. Go to a major hospital / instituation. I'm recovering great from aquablation TURP surgery. There was blood in the urine and lots of pain after surgery, but it has all diminished / gone away as expected basically "on schedule". I've resumed going to the gym, golf, and sex all by week 6 after surgery. Only negative is ejaculation is not as pleasurable as before.....hoping this improves over time. P.S. I was in full retention and on a catheter for 3 months prior to the surgery.

My body reacted to the Holmium laser used during my prostate surgery and began making crystals in my bladder, prostate and urethra. Doctors didn't know how to stop the growth of the crystals which would break off and block the flow urine. I would pass several of the crystals every day and I had to have surgery on two occasions because I could not pass the crystals and the flow of urine was totally blocked. This was more than two years ago, I now have scar tissue in my bladder, prostate and urethra. I am much worst now than before the surgery. I would never recommend using a laser for prostate surgery!

    Dr.,
For persons having only BPH, isn't Aquablation a safer procedure as it uses only waterjet at room temperature as against most other prostate surgeries that use extreme heat that can affect adversely the adjacent tissue and nerves?
I understand that the robotic procedure is so very accurate that it can avoid cutting out areas involved with sexual functions, unlike most other surgeries that remove all such areas, enabling patients to have a higher quality of life post-operation.
Could the numerous BPH sufferers in India too have access to this option, just as patients of most advanced nations please?

There's a reason TURP is still regarded as the gold standard. It's very well known and has had most of the downsides it had when introduced reduced or removed. Yes it's more intrusive than lasers etc but it lasts longer. Typically ten years or more. I've just had it done. I'm four weeks post op and already feeling much better than before. It's been the right decision for me.

@@albertismawan8452 Getting an erection is normally unaffected from before the procedure and may actually be improved ( my experience). Ejaculation in the majority of men will become retrograde (ejaculating into the bladder, which is harmless) if that hasn't already happened due to restrictions in the urethra because of BPH. Don't think that TURP is the end of an active sex life. It most definitely isn't for the vast majority of men who chose it over other treatments.

    • @jimhood1202
      @jimhood1202 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ronaldowespi perhaps I didn't describe the restriction in the urethra as being due to the enlarged (bph) prostate pressing inward and making the diameter smaller correctly, nevertheless the effect is the same in that the ejaculate is unable to travel down the urethra and instead is passed into the bladder.
