I’m an 80’s girl, so I’ve always loved Cyndi Lauper, but the analysis of this song really gave me an appreciation for her talent. Her breath control is wonderful. She stabs those notes hard when she chooses, and then holds them effortlessly when she needs to. Amazing control.
As a fellow 80's & Cyndi fan, I couldn't have said it better. I really can't imagine the 80's without Cyndi in it. 🤩So glad that she's still rockin' too.
What’s interesting is. Roy was the first to record it, but tragically died before its release. So the writers, who already worked with Cyndi, offered the song to her. So strangely, it’s a cover but Cyndi’s version was the one we heard first
Hi Phil, another great analysis. Would you please consider looking at Maureen McGovern singing winter wonderland off of her Christmas with Maureen McGovern album she’s phenomenal, cabaret, jazz, singer, and movie theme Singer super super talented, gorgeous voice.
I don't think it's a cover bc Cyndi said she didn't listen to Roy's version of it bc she didn't want to be influenced and like you said Cyndi;'s version was released first so they are both original.
Vocally, there are very few who can hold a candle to Cyndi. Seeing her live is a revelation - power, range, tonality, pitch, expressiveness... she has it all.
I couldn't recall her version of this song until I heard it just now. I love the way she sings "was that alright" so low in her register & that flip up at the end was amazing. Her visual style is giving me an 80's punk Edith Piaf vibe. She is more than a great singer to me, she is a fierce creature.
Love Cindi. Great performer and vocalist, one of the best. As a young male in the 80s, it was her eyes that captivated me. They're so beautiful and alluring, the very definition of come to bed, now!
yeah... Vocaly i rate her up on the level of Celine Dion or Mariah Carey. She is absolute great. Mostly inn her late career... after her Kids just wanna have fun time :D. I own every LP from her yet. Absolute fantastic singer. I have to say.. i dont know the "original" version as is only listen to very few male singers at all. Shes absolutely GREAT
Cindy is a singing supertalent...she is a soprano with 3 octaves...she can sing EVERY style....from belting to crooning to folk to Opera to punk to whatever exists...
Cyndi is so talented. I remember when she and Madonna achieved fame at about the same time in the 80s. For me, Cyndi was always the one that more range beyond being a pop singer.
Remember the Madonna Cindy Lauper comparison, never understood it, Madonna's voice was'nt near Cyndie's, in fact Madonna had no good voice at all, she was also a lousy actress, her career says all about her audience and the music industry😢 I love the RO version and also the video one of my favourite songs but CL's version is soooo good, too 🎉🎉 CL was a little bit like Cher's acting career, their extravagant pop personalities hid their raw talent and tremendous performances
This is my favorite version of this song. As a 20 something in the 80's I don't think people at the time appreciated how talented she was because she exhibited some odd behavior at the time. But her voice and talent are sooo good she was able to rise above it.
I have to admit that I didn't think much of Cindy, but have come to appreciate her talent in the last several years. She really gained my respect for "Sallys' Pigeons". A powerful song, and a heartbreaking video.
I think a lot of people associated her with a style of music we didn't care for. I really didn't like some of her style of music, but being for the oldies era where voices like hers prevailed, I found myself glued to listening to her singing just for her voice. Then, she would sing in all kinds of styles.
Cyndi had so much style, personality, charisma and- dare I say it- true colours in her voice- that it is virtually impossible not to be moved. She knew how to dress, how to write, how to sing, and she flirted with so many genres, beit jazz, pop, country and blues. A true pioneer. I will always remember seeing her perform on TV for the first time, wearing two different coloured converse shoes to match her two-toned coloured hair, and this was in the 80s, paving the way for the likes of Madonna and inspiring Nina Hagen
I heard Cindy when she exploded on the scene and ever since. I have always thought she was underrated as a vocalist- this song and analysis shows her range- she gets some really deep tones in the runs! Fil, maybe another analysis on this aspect of Cindy’s singing, the depth of range?
July 5, 2024 not even 15 minutes ago I saw this channels reaction to Roy Orbison‘s cover of this song and I’m gob smacked. I’ve heard a handful of his other songs and Pretty Woman was an indelible part of my growing up. I have always loved his voice and his range but until I saw you isolate the vocal track and analyze it I had no idea. I love your reactions and will definitely be subscribing. Mr. Orbison‘s version of this brilliant Kelly/Steinberg song is as driving in its own way as Cyndi Lauper’s and the arrangement gives a few subtle nods to Orbison’s version. I love them both; thank you for steering me to Roy’s cover, I owe you👍
The way she was raising the pitch, and still managed to end it so cleanly at 1:45 - 1:52 is amazing. It's almost exactly on the line! She is such a talented and versatile artist. One of the greatest female vocals in history for sure! What an icon!
I was 21 when "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was released. I have never really focused on the instrumental parts of any song she has sang. Her voice is so unique, you don't need to. From the first word she sings, you know exactly who you are hearing. She truly is one of a kind. And this song is my favorite from her.
Its incredible that this song was so well written and produced that it ended up having 3 very distinct versions, all from very different artists, and all 3 had hits with it- Roy himself, Cyndi, and then Celine Dion later. Cyndi and Celines being so different from the original and yet those two also being so different from one another with different ranges and different productions shows that very well written songs stand the test of time and will fit with anyone with the talent to make them their own

@@jarmyvicious I'm familiar with that performance! Spectacular! The early video on TopPop holds a special place for me as I saw the band give a similar performance at The Ritz NYC in 1980 when she was an unknown. I knew immediately she would become huge.
Thanks for this awesome analysis of Cyndi Lauper. I was an adolescent/ teenager(giving away my age)when she appeared on the scene and found her amazingly talented. Yet people were quick to dismiss her because of how she dyed her hair and her wardrobe--these were considered "eccentric" during the 1980s. Your analysis of this song reminds me of Cyndi's plethora of vocal abilities including breath control and maintaining pitch. Bravo, Fil for all you do!
Hi Fil, This is such a cool song no matter who sings it! I love how they each bring their own style and interpretation to it. Fun to look at both versions and Cyndi really hammers this one home! I also watched her do a live performance of this that she did on one of the late night shows… it was really great! Thanks for doing this awesome analysis. Love Ya’… Debbie☮️
Totally agree .. Yes, she sung this live on Letterman, and it's just fantastic ! .. Probably my favourite performance from her of this great song .. She's just an awesome live singer, and can do anything that she does on record .. Amazing artist.
I liked Cindy Lauper. She made me feel happy. "Girls just wanna have fun". But this one is a gem! She was & still is a gem. 🤍💎 Your analysis makes me appreciate her even more. It makes me pay attention to the details you point out. Thanks Fil. 🤘💜
I love both Roy and Cyndi's version of this song and listening to the difference in how they both sung it! Thanks for another great analysis and congrats again on getting 336k subscribers! You are amazing! 😉👍
Cindy is a natural (artistic) talent and she's fearless. It took me a while to notice it. Maybe "Girls just wanna have fun" had something to do with that, but when she used a dulcimer I took notice. That's good stuff...
I know it's been awhile Fil. Thank you *so* much for this analysis. It was quite informative and helped me learn some things that I didn't recognize and know before and helped me realize some things that I didn't even knew I knew! LOL That's why I need to watch you more! So I may learn and grow more when it comes to music. I'm not sure if you remember but you had done a Cyndi Lauper analysis video for one of her songs and I was a bit hard on you because I thought it seemed as though you didn't appreciate her talent or think she was as talented as she really is. I want to apologize to you for that because it was wrong of me to be so harsh. You, of course had responded kindly and in a respectful, gentlemanly manner and stated that you did, in fact think that Cyndi was incredibly talented and liked her very much. I believe you had apologized as well that I felt the way I did. I feel horribly about that. I never realized how much of a big Cyndi Lauper fan you are. Thank you for your knowledge, your expertise, kindness, wit and charm. And of course for being so handsome.😁 I'm *still* in love.😂
Didn't have the strings going up with her voice, but it let her voice really shine. Man, when either of them hit *THAT* note ("in-SIIIIIIDE") -- whoo the feels come out the eyes! Or is it just me? 😅
One of my all time favorite songs and I love Roy's and Cyndi's versions equally. I am always in awe of Cyndi Lauper's incredible talent. Thanks so much for showing us this version thru your amazing eyes.
Fil, Fil. I just can't help it.This song gives me shivers every time. But then, I grew up llstening to Cyndi Laper. Then, a few years ago I went to her concert in Santa Barbara, at the Granada Theater. Fans rushed the stage at one point and I was close enough to reach up and she held my hand for a full minute whileshe sang. Yeah. I'm still thrilled.
Funny thing about the 80s, we had small children and played a cassette tape player for music when driving around to keep them entertained. Cindi's music was a favorite.
I have just found myself in tears - I love this song and adore Cyndi's version. It has expression of both true love and sexual yearning and the instumentation works with that. I am also proud to have the 12" single of this as well. I like Roy Orbison at times, but I didn't think he did the song justice, given it is actually such a passionate song. IMO.
I am so impressed by Your great and professional knowledge. And, another stressful day at work, but now jogging and another stress relief video 😊, thank you!!
Thank you, Fil, for this interesting comparison analysis ! There is so much to listen to comparing Roy's singing of this song and then Cindi's version! Now I want to go back and listen to Roy again ! ❤
I've had both artists' versions of this song in my playlist for some time now and I have to say that although I prefer Roy's -- which is surprising for me because it's the only song of his I have in my playlist -- Cyndi's is obviously very good too. Thanks for sharing your analysis of this one.
I think it’s generous and thoughtful of you to leave a link to the music uninterrupted by you,but what fun would that be? I appreciate your knowledge and feel for music, thanks for explaining call the stuff you explain👏👏👏
Had another listen to Roy's version ! I like the gallop in Roy's version far more! I also find Roy's version more pleasing to my ear ! Thanks again , Fil !
"I have had the pleasure of attending 15-20 of her live performances, and I must say that her vocals are truly exceptional. When she performed "I'm Gonna Be Strong" live, I was blown away. The range and power of her voice exceeded my expectations. However, it is unfortunate that her behavior often drew more attention than her incredible talent.".
LOL. The way you worded that makes it sound like she's always in the news for bad behavior or ending up in jail for drugs and alcohol. People love her because of her personality. Her "behavior" didn't draw attention away from her talent. Or get in the way or overshadow her talent. If it *did* she wouldn't have Grammy awards, an Emmy and Tony award.😂
I think using the "uh" vowel rather than the "ah" vowel with the word "night" is, among American accents, mainly a New York thing (I do it too) - an example of "partial Canadian raising".
I've not really heard much by Ms Lauper, but from memory the stuff I have heard I have liked. If I had to use a single word to describe her (voice and persona) I think I'd opt for 'quirky', which is no bad thing.
🙋♀️Good morning and happy new year to you and yours! I find it interesting, and kind of thrilling, that near the end when she did that yodel - like note(s) like Roy does, I was a few feet away from my device doing something and when I heard those notes, I literally got the chills. I love Cyndi, don’t get me wrong but I really really really love Roy, and I must dig around soon and pull out one of my CDs of his to play. 🥰
I am the biggest Celine fan, but I too prefer Cyndi's version. I mean I love all three versions, but there's something special in Cyndi's delivery - as well as the way the strings and percussion compliment each other. Top notch stuff.
This was a great song for her voice. She nails it with the bit of grit that she has with that darker air. Great song. Roy's voice flowed over you. Incredible singer. Two different styles. Both amazing. Another female singer worth analyzing is Grace Slick. Her voice packed a punch
Thank You Fil for analyzing Cyndi’s version and comparing it with Roy’s so close together. After hearing your analysis of Roy’s, I immediately went to see Cyndi’s version that you just analyzed and I didn’t enjoy it as much. As I said previously, I didn’t have a real appreciation for Roy’s incredible talent and I will say the same with Cyndi’s as well. Now I Do ! Thank You so much for helping me to see and hear the two so close together, both are great artists that I will enjoy hearing going forward ! 🙏
Oh my goodness, I adore her version of this song! It's on one of my daily playlists. Roy was amazing: his solo work and with the Traveling Wilburys are treasures for me, so his version has a special place. But there's something about Cyndi's version that seems more desperate and urgent, totally fitting for driving all night to get to someone. Her vocals, I think, express those feelings incredibly well, far better than Roy's. Given the circumstances of the recordings, i understand the difference. Thank you for this analysis, Fil!
you might find Del Shannon's (perhaps known best for the song "Runaway", though he has others) final album of particular interest, a similar effort but not near topping that put forth by that veritable supergroup, The Traveling Wilburys! WithJeff Lynne and Tom Petty faithfully assisting in performance and production, the result does have that "special something" that rang true for me, happily amounting to that familiar feel! Cheers and Happy New Year's! CIAO!
Nice analysis, Fil!! I love both Roy’s, and Cyndi’s version of this song. I have always loved the song, anyway. The words, 💕! Roy’s video is nice to watch too! Just a thought for you, Fil.? Maybe you would consider doing an analysis of this tune in Celine Dion’s version? I love her voice too, and sadly, she isn’t doing well these days. Her health is not good. I don’t think she’s going to be able to sing anymore. But, man oh man! That lady could SING. You can tell how much these phenomenal artists LOVED their music, singing, and the stage! They really are such beautiful vocalists! Thanks so much, Fil! Happy New Year to you, yours, and all of our friends here! 🎉❤😊 Stay Safe!
I did the bad thing not listening to annything other then Heavy Metal or Meat Loaf in my younger years. And i hate what i had missed ;D. Still i love Metal but i absolutely adore Singers like her or Celine.
You've got to analyze the voice of Lara Fabian who is touted as the world's greatest female artist. While not famous in the USA, she is a big star in Canada, Europe, Asia, and South America. Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for your analysis. You have definitely provided insight on artists that I didn’t care for. Just because I don’t like an artist or genre (Opera) doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate true talent.

I can appreciate both versions of this song! Totally different styles. Thank you for the comparison Fil! 💜
The rhythm makes me think of driving down a freeway
I'm glad you came back to this one so soon after Roy. It's such a great song....such romantic longing and desire in it.
Always my fave from Cyndi, and gloriously fun to sing with her. She is just so amazing with her rich voice & fabulous breath control.
Such a great song 😃 Cyndi Lauper, love her!
Fantastic comparison analysis, Fil!
Thank you so much 🖤🤘🏽
P.S. Céline Dion's version coming up next? 🙄😁
My favorite of her songs.
Great song. Glad you looked at this one.
Gosh I loved this album, and song! Cyndi was, and is, incredible. Loved Roy too. ❤
Hi Fil,
This is such a cool song no matter who sings it!
🤍💎
Your analysis makes me appreciate her even more.
Cyndi is just so so so underrated , totally love her , i place her in the same league as Joni Mitchell of my all time favs
She has a heavy New York accent when she speaks, so I never knew she could sing like this in the 80s
I really enjoyed this analysis and great to hear this version by Cyndi Lauper as a follow up to Roy Orbison's version. 😊🎸🎵
Cyndi never fails to wow me❤🔥
It's fun to look at the differences in these. I like both versions. Thanks, Fil.
Funny thing about the 80s, we had small children and played a cassette tape player for music when driving around to keep them entertained. Cindi's music was a favorite.
It was one of Cyndi’s last big singles and was gritty. I liked it.
I've always loved Cyndi Lauper. She's an amazingly talented and unique singer.
IMO.
Roy and Cyndi are great. Cyndi was really unique same as Roy. I'm glad you analyzed these songs Fil,
I am so impressed by Your great and professional knowledge.
I remember this on the radio
I've had both artists' versions of this song in my playlist for some time now and I have to say that although I prefer Roy's -- which is surprising for me because it's the only song of his I have in my playlist -- Cyndi's is obviously very good too.
Thanks for sharing your analysis of this one.
You are missing some incredible songs by Roy!
I think it’s generous and thoughtful of you to leave a link to the music uninterrupted by you,but what fun would that be? I appreciate your knowledge and feel for music, thanks for explaining call the stuff you explain👏👏👏
Love Cyndi's version ❤
Had another listen to Roy's version ! I like the gallop in Roy's version far more! I also find Roy's version more pleasing to my ear ! Thanks again , Fil !
It's always been my favorite of the versions. More intimate.
Cyndi live in Paris in 87 with that band is still a highlight.
14:28 Goosebumps
I forgot about this song, thank you!!!
What a fantastic video have a wonderful happy new year fil ❤😊
Enjoyed.
While I like Celine Dion, I much prefer Cyndi’s version of this song. Cyndi’s songs are so good. Great analysis of Cyndi covering Roy’s song. Rock !!
I am the biggest Celine fan, but I too prefer Cyndi's version. I mean I love all three versions, but there's something special in Cyndi's delivery - as well as the way the strings and percussion compliment each other. Top notch stuff.
I like both versions. This song is quite a challenge for a singer i guess, extraordinary song in my opinion.
Love your reactions and analysis. Your singing is spot on as well.
This was a great song for her voice. She nails it with the bit of grit that she has with that darker air. Great song. Roy's voice flowed over you. Incredible singer. Two different styles. Both amazing. Another female singer worth analyzing is Grace Slick. Her voice packed a punch
Analyze Cyndi's version of "I'm Gonna Be Strong". It will blow your socks off.
SECONDED. EMPHATICALLY. I've never heard such a song with such range sung to absolute perfection. Just insane stuff. In a good way. 😳🥰
Cyndi Lauper is a very charming artist.
This super interesting! Thank you!
Cyndi lauper live in the mid 80s was a powerhouse Cyndi lauper live in Paris had some incredible vocals you could find it on youtube.
Thanks!!
CIAO!
Her staccato delivery matches well with the strings (or vice versa)
Nice! Please look at Scott Walker, he had such a unique voice. Would love to hear what you think of him.
I am definitely a Cyndi fan (danced around the house to many of her songs) but greatly prefer Roy’s version of this song. Great analysis as usual!
Stay Safe!
I’d love to see Mr Fil’s take on some early Keane. Around 2005 or 2006.
‘Bedshaped’ would be great for vocal analysis, or ‘Atlantic’. 😀
This moment ,your pretty voice..the Heart goes boom.. in compagny of Cindi..thanks Fil💌🧚👍💃👄
Great analysis as usual. Many thanks
Thank you for your analysis. You have definitely provided insight on artists that I didn’t care for. Just because I don’t like an artist or genre (Opera) doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate true talent.
