Cyndi's voice really is exceptional - not only because it's so distinctive, but because it's so well preserved even as she closes in on 70. In 2014 she did a full length concert of her entire debut album, and she sang every song in its original key - at 60!

Second. In 1986 I caught her at a concert in a local arena. She had a round stage in the center. She ended a song on her knees, then with her right fist began pounding the ground in front of where she was. Next she folded her upper body to lay it on her thighs and knees, still pounding her fist all the while singing. I assumed the energy she used had left her exhausted; you could hear her breathing as if she had run a great distance. There was a spotlight on her. Incredibly she slowly began to stand while effortlessly going into What's going on by Marvin Gaye. With more lights on she walks over to a ladder staircase at least 25 feet tall ascending it while singing. She sings the rest of the song while standing on a small platform at the top.

Cyndi makes this song great .She did a very chilling and personal version of " Carrie " performed for at a ribute to Joni Mitchell. Joni was shocked. She's a special artist and one of the top female vocalists in Pop n Rock .

I love how Cyndi's naturally vibrato voice expresses a kind of vulnerability that from the get go invites us to be on her side. And it carries the emotion of this song so well. Thank you, Fil, for explaining the power of setting the tempo. That makes so much sense. I love how little Cyndi appears to have to do to give the audience the invitation to enter the song with her. She doesn't point the microphone at the audience, she doesn't cup her ear, she doesn't make a competition from side or side or male to female, there's no laboured "come on everybody!" I think I just spotted three hand claps and one verbal prompt. That's a measure of her power and rapport eh! Incidentally doesn't she look fabulous at 65!! Gives me hope :)

I don't know if you noticed this, but the few people standing and dancing at the beginning of Cyndi's performance include the amazing Angelique Kidjo & Broadway Goddess Kristin Chenoweth. As a lifelong Cyndi fan, you are astutely picking up on what makes her so special. She is a strong, skilled. professional musician who knows what she wants. She has been portrayed as the bubble-headed weirdo, but she is completely in control of her stage and all that's happening on it. She is hyper vigilant about sound to the point where I've seen her berate a sound engineer for not listening to her.

She learned that stuff from Lou Albano, her manager (dont know if he still is). He was a wrestler from the 60s, when fun and craziness were the rule in wrestling. He taught her that looking outrageous and acting nutty was the way, because it pulls people's attention in to you . She started doing it his way and became a super star .

She was touring with the Bangles and to be honest the Bangles blew her off the stage because they were hungry and were super talented, especially, bassist Michael Steele and Suzanna Hoffs. Cindi had a great show and clearly wowed the crowd but discerning music fans at the moment in time could see The Bangles as a true musical force. They were a year or so away from mega stardom but you could see fame coming.

Great analysis. From a vocals perspective I'd love to know what Cyndi has done over the years to maintain that incredible voice of hers, for she still retains pretty much her original range that she had when she was young. For a lady of nearly 70, who has regularly performed all her life and lived (at times) a bit of a rock n roll lifestyle, that is incredible. Even Cher, who she is paying tribute too and still has an incredible voice, has lost a little off the top of her range (especially in a full belt) as she's aged (as almost all of us do). Cyndi seems almost impervious to aging, in body, peformance and voice.

I remember when she made her debut, Cyndi said, "Who is Cyndi Lauper and why is she so unusual?" I'm just catching up to your wonderful analysis of her performance. You made a wonderful point that it's not so easy for a performer to get the audience engaged and you provided great examples of how Cyndi did that. I read that her vocal range spans 4 octaves but you reminded me that there's more to vocal range when it comes to putting on a show.
Sending you well wishes for a full recovery, Fil!

Cyndi Lauper es mucho más que una cantante, ella es una energía.

Great content FIL. Sometimes Cyndi's showmen ship did over shadow her singing. If you watch her videos she was always doing something funny or weird clothes that would distract you from her singing. It's only when you heard her on the radio and really concentrated on her voice, you realized what good voice she has!
