I saw this in its early stages at camp and thought it would be impossible to beat. I know it was not perfectly clean at finals but the level of musicianship, design complexity and physical demand put the other top 5 to shame. The majority of the kids that helped Bloo win in 16 were here in 15 as well and they were just as strong. Very underappreciated by the green polo squad... as usual. This show changed how the judges scored GE and is why Bloo won in 16.
Bluecoats will always have a special place in my heart. They have some of the best general effect imo. Still love them today but I loved their clean cut older uniforms as well.
This is my favorite DCI show, and one of the biggest reasons I wanted to march Bluecoats. Met many people with a lot of cool stories from this show during alumni corps this last week.
I sat to the left of this cameraman back in 2015 at Wake Forest and it was amazing witnessing this show in person. Easily the fan favorite of the weekend even if it didn’t score the highest. And we really enjoyed Ink and Inferno too.
I got to watch them preseason and I realized even when the show was only 80% learned how revolutionary it was about to be. Everyone looks at 16 as the year they changed DCI but it was honestly 2015. The music, drill, design etc. next level!
I was sitting to the left of this guy who recorded this back in 2015. It’s still amazing. Have you seen the 2022 Alumni partial version of this closer that just came out the other day for the Bluecoats 50th? I do miss Willie though. Such an energetic drum major.
This is fine, but time signatures are all over the place. For example, the beginning section is just 4/4 3/8 alternating until the 5/8. Same with the 9/8 duo section - it's just 3/4 3/8 alternating. I highly suggest you to look at the DM's conducting for the time signature. People who transcribe drum corps shows often make mistakes of not referring to the DMs and going with their gut instincts (me included).
Yeah, let me guess. This was from a “contemporary “ composer. Obviously in love with time signatures and a lot of dissonant syncopation, producing the kind of musical gibberish that audiences don’t understand, and don’t want to. The stuff music majors love.
I would hope that if you are watching DCI to the point where you search for past shows, you would have the ability to discern, understand, and appreciate the writing of this show or any like it. Not to mention the most likely large amounts of music majors PREFORMING in the show. The activity is all about music and it doesn't have to stay in 4/4 the entire time.
I saw this show live. I was really looking forward to it, after TILT in 2014. Same uniforms, same vibe. I was very excited. I'm sure the show was good, but it's the show I will also remember as my first really negative experience with electronics. Our seats were farther to the front than we normally sat, but usually sitting up front is pretty cool, because you get good sound. That show was so amplified and had so many artificial components that sitting too close to the speakers really took us out of the experience. There at the end you can even hear a sound that seems to be artificial crowd noise. The only redeeming thing about that is that it cuts it off suddenly, to reveal that it's a recording. But I think the crowd gets its energy from itself sometimes, and it seemed really weird to be amping up the crowd with artificial crowd noise. The Bluecoats didn't create this electronics and amplification situation we're in. They're working within the parameters that exist to create very good shows. But as an 80s dinosaur, I really miss zero-watt drum corps shows. Every corps used to put on a show that required zero electrical cords. And they were great shows.
Unfortunately I do not do full transcription :) Dillon Reese and TheMTCrew do that though, and they're extremely talented. I also try to refrain from using the Official FloMarching footage to reduce strikes on my channel! Thanks for the suggestion though Exothermic!
@DCI Garage Band And my ears seem more tuned to higher pitches, like trumpets and mellophones, I have a really hard time transcribing bass parts and I won't lie, there are definitely mistakes in this one. I try my best though :) And I love them both, they are great, even if they aren't perfectly accurate, I must say that it takes some willpower to transcribe full shows. I only transcribe small snippets and it's still painful lol
Can you post a transcription of my high school bands show? We have a really cool EWI solo in the opener and the closer that would fit your video format well

Devils won this year, but I know from personal experience when this was recorded at NightBEAT, the crowd buzzed about this show the most even though they didn’t score the highest. A true testament to how well it’s aged.

I just do it so it looks clean on the score, trying to make my videos more towards the (correct but also flashy good) for better content.

No trombones, guitars or cellos needed. This is much more powerful, and real unis do something for the field coverage.
What did the trombones ever do to you? If you’re going to complain about the solos in dci shows this year, leave the trombones out of it. 😭
