imo solo vocals sounded better with the Neve, but in context with the mix the avedis sounded clearer and more upfront in the mix

Did you have the 28k button in? I have the MA5 at home. I run it into a Pete’s Place BAC500 Comp. Maag eq if I have to have EQ. The MA5>BAC500 works great on vocals, especially with the distortion, and side-chain EQ boost on. on in the BAC500

I've gotta be honest. I think the MA5 wins here. On the other video (nylon string guitar) I think it was a toss up depending on what you want. But for this vocal, this style, the MA5 sounded more finished to my ears.
Yeah. Nothing wrong with a 1073, and Avedis has certainly made plenty of those. The real benefit to a 1073 is just that it is "the" sound that you've heard before, the familiarity is always worth something in my opinion. The MA5 is more open/clear in the midrange - you won't need to cut the mud once the tracks build up, etc. And of course you can get 4x MA5 and 4x E27 and still have money left over vs. the vintage 1073.

MA5 clearer would require less EQ not too sibilant. Neve would need some top maybe a cut in the mud depending on mix.
I agree with you. I’m considering a pair of either MA5 or a BAE 1073, and I think I’m going with the Avedis.
I have two avedis ma5. I also had the bae 1073 and returned it.
LIstening back, the neve has the saturation that makes it sound like a record. Makes the mids pleasing. This can be done in the box though.
Avedis sound more modern. 1073 sounds smoother.

Nice Song by the way! To me they're pretty close, but the avedis has more clarity while the 1073 has a tiny bit more ompf in the low end and a rounder top end
